Beautiful and fun book, but not as useful as "Making Faces"

Aucoin produces yet another beautiful and fun book about the art of make up. However, Face Forward is much like Making Faces without the practical techniques.
The book follows the same format as Making Faces without many improvements. The book begins with general articles about brows, lips, eyes, color, etc. However, these articles are truly general and only give written directions to achieve the looks in the photos. If you have the facial structures of the models, then these sections will be very useful to you! For the rest of us, I found the preliminary sections to be fun but not helpful.
The next section entitled "Face to Face" is useful with many before and after photos. The techniques are written and illustrated by photos of the make-over subject throughout the process. The looks are very natural and complimentary to the different ethnicities featured. I wish there were more makeovers in this section!
The final section entitled "Dimensions" features 48 different looks that are fun but not realistic for everyday use. In fact, most of the techniques demonstrated would only be useful for Halloween or a costume party. This section features many stars from Madonna to Tina Turner but offers little substantive content for everyday use.
Being a make-up-a-holic, I found Making Faces the better buy of the two. If you have to choose, choose Aucoin's first book for practical use. For fun, this book definitely takes the cake.

Exceptional, from both artistic and "how-to" perspectives

If you've ever looked at fashion magazines and wondered what makeup techniques went into creating the look, "Face Forward" may give you all the answers you need. Not only did Kevyn Aucoin do all the makeup in this book, but he also wrote it and contributed to the photography, art direction and design. He is a genius. Period.
Outside of the introductory chapters, the book is divided into five main parts: 1) "Behind Beauty," where Kevyn describes how he treats the face to bring out a wide range of attributes; 2) "Face to Face," which consists of in-depth photography and illustrations of the steps involved with creating beautiful looks; 3) "Dimensions," where Kevyn explores the "classic personifications of beauty" by making up actresses and models to look like stars of the past; and 4) & 5) forward-looking concepts of makeup techniques and the future of beauty, also using the faces of actresses (and even his mom).
I think it's great that someone as talented as Kevyn can be so generous in explaining his craft, but even if you're not into that, "Face Forward" holds up fantastically on its merits as an art/photography book: the resemblance of the current stars to the past ones is incredible (e.g., Winona Ryder as Elizabeth Taylor).
This book may be a little advanced for makeup artists who are just starting out, but hey, makeup is art, and art is about ideas, so it's definitely worth checking out. For anyone who is just plain interested in fashion and style, "Face Forward" will be intriguing, even if only for the skill exhibited in transforming one famous face into another. It's a masterpiece.

Good, but not an improvement from Making Faces.

Based on the same principles as Making Faces, Kevyn Aucoin created a reasonable sequel of his first book. However, making faces definitely had something in it that Face Forward is missing. If you liked Making Faces, I would recommend getting this book, too, but if you want to get one or the other, I would recommend Making Faces.

About the Author
Keith Richards is a musician, singer, songwriter, and founding member of the rock band the Rolling Stones. Widely considered one of the best guitarists in the world, he has a collection of over 350 guitars. His memoir, Life, received unanimous critical acclaim and was a #1 New York Times bestseller. Mr. Richards has five children and five grandchildren.
Theodora Dupree Richards, named after her great-grandfather Theodore Augustus Dupree, is an artist and a daughter of Keith Richards and Patti Hansen. To research the images for this project, she traveled to the Richards family home in Dartford, England, and consulted family and historical photographs of her father's childhood era. This is her first book.

Grandpas rock! Great book, beautiful story.

Who'd have thought the wildman, who gave us When the Whip Comes Down and Let’s Spend the Night Together, could also tell such a gentle, evocative tale? Keith Richards writes about his grandfather Gus — a bandleader whose house was filled with “instruments and cake” — and the meandering walks they’d take together through the streets of London.

Stones fans will love Gus & Me because it reveals how young Keef developed his love for music. But even if the book wasn’t about Richards (and even if the playful/mischievous illustrations hadn’t been drawn by his daughter and even if the accompanying CD didn’t feature Keith reading the story in the perfect bedtime voice), it’s simply a wonderful book for children, a book about the lasting gift that a grandfather gave to his grandson.

A love song....

A wonderful, touching tale of the love between a Grandfather and Grandson that led to a shared passion for music. I had read the story in Keith's autobiography Life, but the addition of his daughter Theodora's (who is named for Theodore Augustus Dupree, the titular Gus) illustrations adds to the family bond evoked by the story. Ordered a copy for my Grandniece and one for myself; my only regret is I don't get a copy of the CD with Keith reading the story since I got the Kindle edition...maybe Quinn and I can share! If you are a fan of music of any kind and wish to pass that love along, buy this book. If you have grandchildren or grandparents whom you love (or loved) and wish to pass that love along, buy this book. And if you love Keef, definitely BUY THIS BOOK!

Macalvie joins Jury and Melrose

Help the Poor Struggler, by Martha Grimes, is the 6th book in this excellent series. The book introduces us to the moody and blunt Brian Macalvie. Macalvie will become a recurring character in the series, appearing in some of the books to follow. This novel features a mystery involving a serial killer of children in the mysterious Dartmoor (famous for the Sherlock Holmes adventure The Hound of Baskervilles). This is a very strong entry in this compelling series. Macalvie, a local constable, is haunted by a previous case that seems to be related to this series of killings. Jury enlists the aid of Melrose Plant and soon the sleuthing is underway. A really solid read and an important book in the series.

For those of you new to the series, I would recommend reading them in order for the best reading experience; however, they are also fun as stand alone novels.

Connecting the dots

The tiny hamlet of Clerihew Marsh is the site of the murder of Rose Mulvanney. Her five year old daughter calls the operator to summon assistance. Wiggins and Richard Jury are interested in another matter years later in Dorchester. The victim is Simon Riley, son of a butcher. It is wondered if Davey White in Wynchcoombe is somehow connected to the incident of Simon Riley. The second boy has been placed in a church. His grandfather and guardian is vicar there.
Help the Poor Struggler is, not surprisingly in a book from the Richard Jury series, a pub. Molly Singer wears off the rack Oxfam clothes. She will not speak to the police. The latest victim is Angela Thorne. She is wrapped in a cape belonging to Molly Singer. It seems that Molly Singer is Mary Mulvanney, a daughter of the years-ago murder victim.
It is pleasant to read a Richard Jury mystery because he appears complete with ensemble players. Half-way through this book Melrose Plant turns up at the Jack and Hammer along with the Long Piddleton antiques dealer, Marshall Trueblood. Jessica Ashcroft, a child and Jury's candidate for next victim, is all ready to service Plant's Rolls Royce which fails just outside the wall of the Ashcroft manor house. She claims to know about cars and welcomes him into the premises which is the plan as conceived by Plant and Jury.
Chief Superintendent Racer is concerned over the nonsolution of the cases. As Jury continues his investigation he surmises that the cases are connected since the sites, Princeton, Clerihew Marsh, and Wynchcoombe are equidistant from each other and from Ascroft Manor. Simon's stepmother has an Ashcroft connection it is ascertained. The vicar of Wynchcoombe is related too.
The story is well-plotted. This is a lovely book. The character of the child, Jessica Ashcroft, is just right.

Love, money, and revenge

This is an Onyx 2005 reprint of a 1985 novel. It is a little on the dark side, and a change of pace from the author's early novels in the Jury/Plant series. No side excursions into Long Piddleton, or side issues about flashers. Perhaps the author was developing a more serious side. You do need to read some of the earlier novels to understand the Jury and Plant characters.

The story starts with a prelude about a murder where the wrong man is convicted. The only witness, the victim's 5-year old daughter, is left catatonic and unable to point out the killer. The wrong man is convicted of the crime and sent off to prison, simply because he was infatuated with the victim.

Now it is 20 years later. A serial killer is murdering children in the same geographic area as the earlier murder. It appears to be the work of a psychopath. The police are attempting to link the killings and various suspects show up on the scene - the man, just released from prison, who was convicted of the earlier murder; an agoraphobic photographer who seems a bit mysterious; and various relatives who might inherit money if Lady Jessica, a 10-year old heiress, should happen to die.

Events and police work bring the story to some surprising conclusions. The novel is split into 28 chapters.

A Must Read For Tweens And Teens

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

An amazing story from a remarkable young lady

I downloaded this book minutes after midnight on its first day, and 14 hrs later I have finished it cover to cover. I have been married to a Pakistani for 14 yrs, and have repeatedly asked my husband, "Why do the Pakistanis put up with this"...or that as situations have arisen over the yrs. The best answers I have gotten are the same mentioned in this book. Corruption & fear. It is so wonderful to see a father & his daughter take a stand for their right for something as simple as going to school that so many of us take for granted every day.
Although I have never been to any of the 'villages' I have visited Pakistan once & was a bit surprised by the conditions in one of the larger cities. The Swat valley does sound beautiful thanks to the wonderful mental pictures I got from the very vivid text. It really is ashame that this area is no longer available for tourist, be they Pakistani or international. I also accompanied an in-law to a doctor's while in Pakistan, and as a retired RN, I am really amazed that Malala survived this ordeal. I have little doubt that it definitely was not her time to die no matter what the Taliban tried. God....Allah....must have other plans and no man will change that.

A 5-STAR STORY WITH A 6-STAR HEROINE, BUT 2-STAR NARRATIVE WRITING; I RECOMMEND THE YOUNG ADULT VERSION INSTEAD

The story of Malala Yousafzai is remarkable in every way, and she is an amazing, courageous young lady. Her story is astounding; the circumstances that she was forced to live through, and her bravery and sense of purpose, brought world focus to the tragedies in her homeland. This reviewer recognizes the essential significance of the subject matter and the tremendous role model which Malala is, but the story itself was poorly written. In televised speeches, Malala is more compelling and has much more presence than this narrative provided her. The writing is extremely choppy, going backward and forward in time with confusing and unbalanced frequency. The narration is rambling throughout and repetitive in many places, It reads like a poorly edited young adult novel. Perhaps the desire to preserve Malala's recollections as closely as possible to her notes resulted in lack of editing? I read this book along with a team of teachers and four high school classes of students, and nearly everyone I worked with agreed that the story was outstanding, but the writing was so poor it made the book a difficult and frustrating read.

Ironically, the newer, young adult version of this book is far superior in terms of structure and style, and is therefore much smoother and more readable. The YA edition is called I AM MALALA: HOW ONE GIRL STOOD UP FOR EDUCATION AND CHANGED THE WORLD. In my opinion, this YA edition is superior to its adult counterpart, and I recommend it highly. The YA version is co-authored by Patricia McCormick, an accomplished and decorated YA novelist (and a National Book Award finalist) who has written compelling novels on a number of tragic and realistic topics which affect young adults in various parts of the world. Her influence in helping frame Malala's story in unmistakable and eliminates many of the pitfalls which the title being reviewed here was not able to avoid.

This (adult) edition of I AM MALALA is a 5-star story with a 6-star heroine, but 2-star narrative writing.

Bought this for my four-year-old niece who loves fairies, especially Periwinkle. It is a cute story and she seemed quite happy with it.

Great complement to the DVD

The mark of a good novelization is that it goes deeper than the source material--the movie or TV show on which it's based--but does not outshine that material as well. It should offer more without trying to *be* more, if that makes sense. On that basis, THE PIRATE FAIRY delivers quite well. Zarina's story is told in greater depth, showing the road of a fairy who is to pixie dust as Tinker Bell is to gadgets. Like Tink, her skills are not appreciated and her experiments end in disaster--but unlike Tink, she goes elsewhere and makes bad decisions in terms of how to move forward.
Tink and her friends must handle a fairy who is their equal, even as their talents are jumbled and dangerous enemies surround them. It's a terrific story with a strong moral and a good resolution. Here's hoping Zarina appears again, as she has a lot to offer Pixie Hollow.

Fun to read to your kids OR for those early readers of chapter books!

My grandkids and I loved this book....I'd say that the range of 3-7 is a good estimate, with 7 being able to read some of the chapters on their own, giving them that feeling of "I read it myself!"
Even though fairies are something girls love, adding that she's a pirate gives it that extra trait that brothers can enjoy as well.
Zarina is a fairy that's misunderstood, but she runs off with the pirates! She takes the Blue pixie dust that they need in Pixie Hollow...the other fairies have to get it back, but things go wrong, because they find that their talents have been switched!
This is going to be a hit because the movie is coming out, and I know my daughter loves to get the books that go with the movies she loves...

Great Read- Can't Wait for Movie!

My daughter and I read this captivating book in just three settings! She WOULD NOT let me put it down the first night. After staying up way too late, I arranged extra time the second and third night, so she would actually wake up the next morning! It was written perfectly for her grade level, but I was enthralled as well (which is a difficult combination to find in most books for her targeted age group). We already have a mother-daughter date set up to see the movie together! Very excited!

This school arch feels different from the previous storylines. I’m not sure why. I think it might be because we’re getting so much Ciel. Ciel is one of the main characters and always has been, but I think previously there was more focus on Sebastian. But now Ciel is taking the lead, interacting with a lot of other people his age, deciding what to do and doing it himself, and commanding Sebastian only when he can't do something himself.

Being at school feels a little weird, too, I think. There are so many other kids, students, in uniforms and doing activities together. I see a lot of that in other series, but this one usually has focus in other places. It’s neat.

It’s a whole new side of Ciel, and I like it. I especially like all the character exploration we’re getting for Ciel and Sebastian; we're seeing so much more of them! I also really like how Toboso can give a minor and temporary character depth in such a short time. Similarly to with the Circus arch, all the prefects and students are pretty easy to tell apart, even though they’ve only been around a short while. And the way we can get to know certain things about the characters, and find such humor in them, so quickly, is so well done. For example, there's this high-up professor at the school, and we've seen him about three times now, and each time he's ended his conversations by walking away and tripping, sometimes down several stairs. It's hilarious, particularly the look on the surrounding characters' faces.

Oh! We also got a glimpse of Ciel’s father, and that was lovely. His father is definitely a character, and I can see the resemblance. There was also more of Elizabeth and her family. I like getting to know them.

There was some focus on Cricket, a sport that I knew nothing about, and still know very little. It’s a weird sport.

We got some more development on the case, although I think there’s still a ways to go. I’m definitely intrigued. There’s at least one more volume with this arch, although I’d guess two. I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.

I love this series. It’s gorgeous, which really showed with the team outfits shown in this volume. The storylines are so good, and surprising and I love the character development. The humor is fantastic, too. I’m excited for the next volume.

Continues to be entertaining and intriguing.

This is the 16th volume in the Black Butler series. It was well done but not my favorite of the series.

Ciel and Sebastian have infiltrated Westen College and are trying to figure out the cause behind the mysterious disappearance of some of the students there. However the Headmaster seems to be key in these disappearances and the only way for Ciel to get a meeting with him is to attend the mysterious Midnight Tea Party. Only the most prestigious of students are allowed to attend the Midnight Tea Party, so Ciel contrives a plan to have his house win the annual Cricket match...by whatever means necessary.

While this wasn’t my favorite book of the series, I did enjoy it. I just don’t like the boarding school setting and plot as much as some of the previous ones. That being said there are still a number of things I enjoyed here.

We have a whole new cast of interesting (and handsome) characters which I enjoyed. I also found everyone’s blind obedience to the Headmaster to be intriguing. The mystery surrounding the missing students also remains engaging and interesting.

As with previous books there are some funny bits in there too. For example how Ciel’s house deals with the cricket match is funny and so is the scene where Elizabeth’s mother realizes that Sebastian is present at the boarding school.

The illustration remains absolutely beautiful and top-notch. I really love it.

Overall a great addition to this series. I enjoyed the new characters and the main mystery here. I am not as fond of the boarding school setting and was a bit disappointed we don’t see as much as Sebastian's demonic abilities. However, it was an interesting read and overall I continue to enjoy the series. I would recommend to those who enjoy historical fantasy type graphic novels.

I had a blast reading the latest volume in Black Butler! It was so full of new information about certain characters and was just a hoot to read! I highly recommend this!! It came in quick and in excellent condition!! :D

PreS-Gr 2-The successful author-illustrator team behind such titles as Miss Mary Mack (1998) and The Eensy-Weensy Spider (2000, both Little, Brown) has brought another silly song into the world of picture books. Poor Michael Finnegan's violin playing is sorely underappreciated. It is only when he finds a dog he names Quinn-igan (who enjoys the awful "din-igan" of the "violin-igan") that the man is truly happy. In this adapted and elongated version of the traditional song, verses have been added to create some semblance of a story. Sometimes it's a bit of a stretch, as when Michael Finnegan "Took the money from their tin-igan,/Bought a house and moved right in-igan" or when he "Played so loud it was a sin-igan." Still, the book is sure to be a hit with the storytime crowd. The exuberance of this silly romp is wonderfully conveyed in the wacky watercolor-and-ink illustrations that show the tattered, unshaven man and his grinning canine companion.-Piper L. This time they take the old Michael Finnegan chant, add several stanzas, and invent their own rhyming story. Michael Finnegan is so poor, his clothes are tattered and he holds "his pants up with a pin-igan." He plays the "violin-igan" on the sidewalk, but he makes such an awful "din-igan" that the neighbors pay him to stop. No one likes his violin-igan--until he meets a dog that also has whiskers on its "chin-igan," and who loves the music. "Begin-igan." Kids will delight in the silly word play, the wild slapstick details of the big, bright line-and-watercolor pictures, and the cozy, sloppy ending, when the dog kisses Michael on his chin-igan. Begin-igan. The musical notation is on the first page, and this is sure to be a loud join-in favorite for preschool story hour and at home. Hazel Rochman

We keep readin this book again again

Katie (1.5 yrs) loves rhythm and rhymes and this book pays off big time. It's fun to read and play but it is also great to look at! The pictures are terrific. After hearing the story, Katie started playing with the sounds as she did other things around the house. Great for musical children.

Would rather have more books but...

I love the story and the art. Sometimes the downside of having such a large paperback book is the fact you're scared you're going to crack the spine and later down the road lose pages. I try to be sure to take good care of my books/manga, so, here's to hoping it stays in good shape. I love this dark series, I'm looking forward to the rest of it coming out and maybe playing the games later. I keep laughing at the fact that Doctor Nanjou looks like Wilford Brimley though...

OK let me get this straight(I'm not haha NO) I love this series because of its pure awesomeness, amazing art, and kick-ass characters. This omnibus has volumes 1, 2, and most of the 3rd with just a chapter missing. The story starts to get more complicated, thus more interesting of you ask me, with the introduction of the Red Truth. Beatrice starts the 3rd game where again the situation is different than what happened back in the first 2 volumes. There are new characters that're introduced, and Kei Natsumi continues to be an amazing artist with his skill in making the readers sympathize with the family members because of their expressions and reactions that actually look realistic. Unlike most manga artists that draw boring faces with the ever so usual "hottie that always has similar expressions". But hey that always goes under "character" so I'll throw a big bone to Ryukishi07 for writing humans. Anyways, Episode 3 really is my most favorite of the arcs yet since I stopped at Episode 6 online. The vibrant art combined with Ryu's writing skills would bring anyone on the edge of their seats. So straight to the point on why this only got 4 stars is the omnibus itself. Yes, this gets most of the first half of the Episode's story, but the spine easily gets damaged. Hell I only opened this crap like 5 or 6 times to only look at random pages, while opening like barely half way, when I noticed I got a damn crack on it. And trust me it was never there so don't be giving me "Did you check before you opened it?". So basically the only bad thing is that the mass amount of pages (hooray plot!) will eventually kill the book. I don't blame Yen Press, but fate! Lastly, this is an amazing continuation to the story, so I encourage you to buy it if you want to know what happens next :) Just be careful with how you open it because the people before me were damn right! Oh and the color pages here are a nice bonus ;) But I was hoping it would have a certain one I've seen :(

Edit: I've been reading Yen's edition of this, and I got another complaint. In chapter 3 when the cousins were mocking Battler about the dumb phrases he would say to Shannon he's supposed to say "See you again. Have a nice day" in English. Not "Hasta la vista, baby" in Spanish. My problem is that Ange in the next volume and Episode also says the English phrase. At the very least I dang hope that Yen only does this for Battler in this volume ONLY. If you wanna know how I know it's wrong, Battler and Ange say it in the anime! Also, I've read the translations online long ago. Hell some translators do this for free! I'll take this up with Yen someday and get this outta my life.

Awesome book

This book, along with the other volumes of this series got very intense with the plot and the art is incredible. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys supernatural topics, horror, suspense, and mystery solving manga. The book came in excellent condition when it was delivered to me and the seller was very prompt/efficient. Seriously, great series! Definitely a 5 star rating in my eyes.
