Revenge is a dish best served cold...

When Nina sees Emma across a London street, it stirs old memories - and they're not good ones. Engineering an 'accidental' meeting, she's happy to find that Emma doesn't recognise her. Emma, mother of a toddler and pregnant again, is struggling with a life of domesticity and is badly in need of a friend and confidante, giving Nina the ideal opportunity to insinuate herself into Emma's life. But the reader knows from an early stage that Nina isn't the kind, supportive person she seems to Emma. For reasons we don't discover till late on in the book, she's out to have some kind of revenge on Emma - small things at first, but gradually becoming more sinister...

The book is told from the two women's perspectives in alternating chapters. Unfortunately both voices are in the dreaded first-person present tense. I also found that both voices are too similar - while their stories and perspectives are different, their speech patterns and vocabulary are pretty much identical. So apparently are their experiences of child-rearing. I do get rather tired of all the fictional middle-class and fairly wealthy mothers who seem to find child-rearing so difficult and burdensome. Emma is struggling to cope with one child and it's pretty obvious things aren't going to improve when she has to deal with a new-born too. Nina has the typical troublesome teenager, who stays out late and is occasionally rude to her mother. I must say the misery of the two mothers over rather minor things seemed pretty overdone.

The story itself is reasonably interesting, though the device of covering the same ground twice from the two different perspectives becomes really tedious quite quickly. It's been done before and done better - by Gillian White in Copycat, for instance. Again, there isn't enough difference in the two voices to make the re-telling fresh, and we very soon come to know, I felt, how innocent Emma's account would be seen in the next chapter through the eyes of wicked Nina. But from about halfway through the story begins to speed up a bit and the duplication in narrative is reduced. When the action moves to the south of France, Lane gives us some good descriptive writing that creates an authentic sense of place. And although I found the 'children are so hard' angst overdone, she does give a realistic picture of the joys or otherwise of travelling and holidaying with young children in tow.

As the book approaches the conclusion, Lane ratchets up the tension nicely and there's no doubt the ending is suitably thrillerish. No spoilers, but from other reviews the ending seems to be dividing people into love or hate camps - I thought it was well written...but hated it. I didn't feel it worked with the psychology of the characters and I didn't think it matched the overall tone of the book. I think it may be my disappointment with the ending that's colouring my overall view of the book, because for the most part, despite the flaws I've mentioned, I found this a flowing, reasonably enjoyable read, and quite well written. But in the end I felt it was nothing more than a lightweight entertainment, with not enough depth to compensate for some of the weaknesses or to justify the unexpectedly heavyweight ending.

I thought the book was building up to something a little more. I found one character totally relatable as I have a baby and toddler and the other I just didn't get. Of course, perhaps because I am not in that type of reality, but it was just reaching too much for a good reason for the entire plot.

I kept reading this book, even though I felt it was so slow, because I just knew something good would surely be coming. Nope. It was a huge disappointment and waste of my time.

detailed and well-written

The book "Coma" by Robin Cook is about four medical students entering the freighting world of medicine. The time is February of 1976. Three of the medical students are male and one is female. During this time it was very hard for a female to succeed as a doctor. It is even harder for Dr. Susan Wheeler to succeed when she uncovers a horrifying deception. The deception she uncovers is that a select group of senior doctors at Memorial Hospital are taking patients into minor surgery and making sure they do not ever wake up. The patients are not dead; they are in a comatose state. Susan discovers they are harvesting the patients' body parts. She is out to uncover the truth even if it means risking her own life.
"Coma" is very well-written. It has a lot of great description of the characters and their surroundings. The author also gave very vivid description to the operations and procedures performed in a hospital atmosphere. Although the book was very well-written and the author did a great job of putting the reader in the scene, to read this book one must have a fair amount of learned medical terminology. The author uses a lot of very highly technical medical terms, which makes the reading very hard if one is not sure what is going on. Other than this the book is very suspenseful and great reading.

The Relationship Between Coma and Black Market Organs

Author Robin Cook, M.D, published the spine-chilling shocker, written in only two weeks, Coma, in 1978. Cook, not always a novelist, graduated from Columbia University in 1966 and began his work at Harvard University a few years later as a medical doctor. Cook began his writing to get people's awareness dealing with current medical issues that would enlighten the public. Cook's technique involves using his knowledge of medicine and surgery to give clear and accurate descriptions throughout the medical mystery.
Coma takes place in Boston Memorial in the late 1960's. Third year medical student, Susan Wheeler, begins what she thought would be a normal hospital rotation until numerous patients who underwent normal, routine surgery but never awoke and slipped into a irreversible coma. Over a brief period, several events take place. From an unsightly eye, as well as ear-full in the hospital morgue, to endless pursuits lead by an estranged hired hit man, to an illegal institute that had other plans in mind for the comatose patients, other than care. The non-stop entities make for an excellent sci-fi novel. Susan Wheeler is on a personal mission to find an explanation as to why over twelve patients have slipped into irreparable comas after standard surgery in the abominable OR #8.
Cook organized Coma as a diary anecdote. Each new 'chapter' is headed by the date and time to give a precise account of the events that did and will take place. Cook's style of writing stays constant throughout the novel, he is very persuasive yet logical in his writing. Each major event that occurs is not so obvious as to what the outcome will be, yet once uncovered, it makes perfect sense. Coma's text is based on actual medical terminology and diagnosis, yet can be difficult for someone who has little medical knowledge to fully comprehend. Cook's multiple medical word usage was an important factor throughout the novel to understand the over gist of the plot. The various persuasive techniques used by Cook all through the book were most rewarding at the end of the thriller as the mind boggling mystery behind manually induced comatose in OR #8 is finally reveled.

Excellent plot; vapid characterizations

There is one thing for sure; Robin Cook is definitely a doctor. Due to the nature of the novel I was more than prepared to have a fair amount of medical terminology and jargon thrown at me...at times it was a bit tedious and the explanations quite lengthy, but for the most part the subject matter kept me interested. However, I was surprised at how sterile and predictable the main characters were written. Susan Wheeler is not only brilliant, but so stunningly beautiful that every male character's inner dialogue (and yes, I do pretty much mean every male) must endlessly muse about how "dynamite" her figure must be under those sexy scrubs. In fact for a good chunk of the book, the sole purpose the character Dr. Bellows served was someone to remind us how gorgeous and virile-looking Susan is. But of course, Wheeler herself feels that her profession has actually "neutered" her sexual appeal and confidence as a woman. Right. Really, Susan was not likeable and it had nothing to do with her seeming perfection. Her sense of entitlement is cloying, and she seemed unable to comprehend that you don't throw attitude towards your superiors on your FIRST DAY OF ROTATION. She simply was not human enough to sympathize with, which is a shame, because there were several instances which I did agree with the gist of her feelings regarding the unfair ways women are treated in the workplace.

Aside from the characters, the actual dialogue of the entire book is far too technical. And when I say technical, I don't mean in terms of medical terminology, because I said before, that was to be expected. But for example, one part of the book was describing you guessed it, Bellows attraction to Susan. It went something like, "Bellows felt his hypothalamus react to the smooth flesh of Susan's bosom". Uh, okay. And don't get me started on a scene where a med student faints while scrubbed in during an operation. Let's just say, Cook wrote more about the med student's physiological happenings while about to faint, rather than giving this med student an actual PERSONALITY.

Despite it's shortcomings, this book did keep me in suspense, and I said before the subject matter is inherently interesting. Although I have to say that finishing the book felt more like completing a required reading assignment rather than a leisurely entertainment. Oh well. This is Cook's first novel, and I can say that with his later writings he did in fact find a balance between writing suspenseful novels and giving miniature dissertations on the reactions of hypothalamuses. I do recommend Coma, and also "Mutation" if you get the chance.

For most, World War II is nothing but a chapter in history--for most Americans, a rosy and happy one. But Paul Fussell, a novelist and WWII veteran, reminds us that only those who've experienced it can truly understand that war is hell. He writes with bite and humor of the horrors and inequalities of the so-called "Good War," which he says "for the United States, [was] an unintended form of eugenics, clearing the population of the dumbest, the least skilled, the least promising of all Americans." Not exactly the thoughts of a sentimentalist, but the notion that war is horrible should be eternally reinforced, and Fussell does so with a fury and skill few writers can muster.

War as a crucible of character: that is the theme of this searching, courageous memoir from Fussell, a National Book Award winner for The Great War and Modern Memory. Fussell, who grew up in the "highly privileged suburb" of Pasadena, Calif., was called to active duty in May 1943. Sent later that year to Europe as a 19-year-old Army infantry officer, he engaged in combat numerous times and, in March 1945, suffered shrapnel wounds in southeastern France. War began to change Fussell when, days after his arrival, he saw his first bodies: "My boyish illusions, largely intact to that moment of awakening, fell away all at once, and suddenly I knew that I was not and would never be in a world that was reasonable or just." When Fussell returned home after the war, he resolved "that I was finished with coercion and murder forever." That decision led him to academia, where he could enjoy a relatively unfettered life and independence of mind. Fussell traces the effects of war on his later activities, covering his personal life, his teaching and his writing. Experiences of a half century ago continue to haunt the author: "sometimes," he confesses, "I waste time devising wild schemes of revenge against the Germans." The primary focus here, however, is on those experiences themselves, presented in unflinching prose as Fussell offers a moving testimony to the indelible place of WWII in the life not only of one man, but of a generation. What's the fuss about?

I was dying for a great war story and what I ran into was a rather self serving autobiography.
I'm sure, as other reviewers claim, there's some great stuff later on, but I just couldn't wade through countless pages of me, me, me.. and my father, he, he, he. ad nauseam. Down to insignificant details a reader couldn't really care about.
MY incredibly boring life has been much more exiting than that.
And as I could not slosh through his hoity toity early life to get to the "meat" of the story, I had to put the book out of it's misery.
If you want a GREAT WWII story read: "With the Old Breed" you won't be sorry.

Not fun, but profoundly moving

I'm not a literary person, I can't spell well, and I am not an infantryman. I was in the Army during the Viet Nam war, and I have a broad range on interests. I didn't choose this book, it was a gift. But it is one of the most moving books I have ever read.
Fussell is a critic, and he indirectly claims that his experiences in WWII were "the making of a skeptic" - and maybe it was. It is fantastic to see him skewer all forms of phoneyness and cover-up - including his own. You also get the impression that he is an uncompromising and very interesting character - but not fun or easy to get along with.
A real career combat infantryman I know had glanced at the book and claimed that Fussell just didn't understand Sherman's quote, "War is hell" and whined too much. I agreed that there was some truth to the criticism, but I got him to read the whole thing. His opinion changed dramatically for the better.
O.K., it is pretty much negative, but you can see underneath all that, he loves life, infantrymen, and people who try their very best and have honor. One of the few heros in the book is Gen. Eisenhower - but he is critical of President Eisenhower. It's a complex book, and he's a complex man. Get a glimpse inside him by reading this book.

PreSchool-Grade 2-Good news for Toot and Puddle fans-the whimsical pigs are back. This time, Toot is feeling blue, and Puddle and Tulip try to cheer him up. All Toot can do is mope, mope, mope. A summer storm comes up, scaring everyone except for Toot, who is back to his old bouncy self by morning. "Sometimes you need a big whopping thunderstorm to clear the air," says Puddle. But Toot secretly credits his pals for his fresh outlook. The message is clear-friends have to stick by one another when they're down. The cartoon illustrations are right on target in portraying the gist of the story and the characters' emotions, from the initial downcast, self-critical Toot to the carefree, puddle-skipping piglet at the end. Hobbie (Toot & Puddle, 1997, etc.) brings back her winsome swine for a sympathetic look at the blues. Puddle is concerned about his good friend, Toot, who has a severe case of the doldrums. While recognizing that ``everybody mopes sometimes,'' Puddle still wants to cheer up his buddy, attempting everything from five-berry cobbler to a wild boat ride down the rapids. Yet even an impromptu party with their friends fails to elicit any excitement from the melancholy pig. Only the passing of time and a raging thunderstorm finally alter Toot's dolorous mood. Hobbie deftly explores the neglected subject of sorrow, making clear to children that it's okay to be downcast for no discernible reason. Although Puddle's well-intentioned efforts are seemingly unsuccessful, what does succeed is that Puddle is perfectly in tune with his friend, convincing Toot and readers that they are not alone and that they will be loved even when they are not ``up.'' Gentle watercolors add a light touch to Toot's malaise without compromising the compassion found in this graceful treatment of a delicate issue. A simple reminder that we don't always have to be happy

The Toot and Puddle series by Holly Hobbie is a sweet (without being saccharine) and charming series about a pair of pigs who are best friends. There are subtle "morals" woven into each book; they fall under the general theme of "everybody is different it's worth trying to understand those differences". In this book, Toot is sad - he can't explain why. He sits and mopes. His friend, Puddle, tries to cheer him up. Toot recognizes this (and even seems to appreciate it), but it does not cheer him up.
Finally, there is a gentle "surprise" ending that made me happy - because I am one of those people who loves "terrible weather"
This is a good book for kids - as a reminder that sometimes people just get sad for a while and can't explain it. It's also a good "gift" book for sensitive adults who appreciate such things. The story is deep enough to speak to adults, I think

Toot & Puddle together again!

Toot & Puddle are perfect porcine pals who, in their delicate way, teach us all that sometimes we're just out of alignment and that's OK.
On a beautiful, sun-shining morning in Woodcock Pocket, Puddle was out catching butterflies. The sun was shining, birds singing, flowers blooming and... Well, in the house, Toot was moping.
Like anyone who's ever had an off day, Toot can't quite explain what's the matter, nor does he particularly *feel* like explaining. SOMETHING'S clearly the matter, Puddle and Tulip the parrot can see that, because nothing seems to cheer him up--not the blue sky, not the clean air, not even "five-berry cobbler with heaps of whipped cream..." Well, the cobbler HELPS a bit, but the next day Toot comes shuffling across the yard, hands stuffed in pockets, floppy hat with equally floppy ears sticking out, half-heartedly kicking some stones.
His friends try to cheer him up. An adventure seems in order, but white water rafting proves to be not quite the right medicine for melancholy. Similarly, a picnic with friends and a game of hide-&-seek is fun for everyone except for Toot, who isn't in the mood to be "it". In short, nothing works and Puddle and Tulip are getting concerned, when a thunderous storm hits.
Toot, who is the only one who is NOT afraid, is out braving the storm in his yellow rain slicker on a beautiful 2-page illustration that itself makes the book worth reading. Lo', the next morning, a happy, smiling Toot comes marching through the puddles towards his friends who, lying in the grass, conclude that "sometimes you need a big whopping thunderstorm to clear the air."
While "You are My Sunshine" doesn't have quite the flow or action of "A Present for Toot", it is an immensely enjoyable book (I personally recommend collecting all three of Ms. Hobbie's works, and any more books to come). The pen & ink illustrations are astounding, and capture the feel of the character moods instantly. The blue sky, Puddle's exuberant jump with a butterfly net, frame his joy at simply being ALIVE on a wonderful day as much as the muted golds & yellows of Toot's room captures his moping, tired affect perfectly. ANYONE who's felt a little off-a little blue or down in the dumps-even on a beautiful day will deeply appreciate this book and it's final message that friends always care for friends, even when they're feelin' down.

a little gem

This is my favorite Toot and Puddle book (my 2yr old loves all of them equally so far). I love the simplicity of the story; how many things Puddle does to try to cheer up Toot, the fact that it's a rain storm that finally does it really hits home with me and I love thinking that it will teach my kids that there are so many things that can make you feel good, even something that other people don't expect. We have a family joke of calling any super yummy treat a "five-berry cobbler". It seems so decadent, yet so easily created in the story. It's a great, feel-good, beautifully illustrated book that kids just adore.

Not horrible, but...

I gave this 3/5 stars because it isn't colorful on the inside. I bought it for a little girl who likes the pink monkey on the front to go along with her toy figure of the same monkey. It's not a horrible product/book, but it'd been perfect had it been more eye catching on the inside.

Great book for first grader!

I thought this was going to be a very small book with pictures and was pleasantly surprised when it came and I saw that it's 145 pages. It will be challenging but is perfect for my 6yr old first grader who loves littlest pet shop and loves to read.

The Wise Woman points out a small yellow butterfly to the child: "Darkness pursues her tooyet She flies on!" Osa falls into a deep sleep and dreams that she has become a butterfly. When she awakens in the Wise Woman's lap, Osa knows the dream has changed her. The story and paintings are suffused with love and warmth; they reassure with their universal appeal. PreSchool-Grade 1 In her African village little Osa is fearless, climbing ``even the big Baobab Tree''; but each nightfall she becomes paralyzed by fear. Then, while visiting the Wise Woman, Osa dreams that she turns into a butterfly and sees the light of the moon and stars. Realizing that ``the night was not really dark at all,'' she wakes to find her fear of the dark entirely gone. The honey-skinned child in her popsicle-pink shift is adorable, and the artwork is gorgeous: its colors are as radiant as stained glass, and a change in technique signals the dream-sequence. The plot, however, seems to be aimed at bibliotherapy, and to miss its goal widely. Osa's phobia is so severe that she, improbably, refuses food and comfort; butterflies are not nocturnal; discovering that the sky in the African bush isn't dark may help a fear of the night but hardly a fear of the dark (e.g., those shadows under one's bed); and Grifalconi seems to believe that ``being brave'' and ``not being afraid,'' are one and the same thing (they're not). Great read for young boys

Cecil Scott "C.S." Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (27 August 1899 - 2 April 1966), an English novelist who rose to fame with tales of naval warfare. His most notable works were the 12-book Horatio Hornblower series, depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic era, and "The African Queen" (1935; filmed in 1951 by John Huston). The Perfectionist Judges Himself Harshly

Flying Colours is the most introspective of the Hornblower novels. For those who want to understand who Hornblower really is, this book is probably the most revealing in the Hornblower series. Unlike the other stories which contain lots of naval action at sea, this book occurs mostly on the land of Spain and France, and the rivers of France. As a result, those who like the Hornblower novels for their battles and action will find this book to be one of the least satisfying in the series.
We all know ourselves best when we face problems. After the many successes in his career, Captain Hornblower ended up in Ship of the Line fighting an impossible battle between his ship, the Sutherland, and four French vessels. Taking horrible casualties, Hornblower struck his colours and surrendered at the end of that book. Flying Colours opens with Hornblower in a Spanish prison, with the expectation that he will be tried and executed for having flown French colours as camouflage to aid an attack. His wife, Maria, is pregnant in England. Hornblower also yearns for Lady Barbara Leighton, the wife of his admiral, whom readers met in Beat to Quarters and saw again in the beginning of Ship of the Line. Hornblower is in despair as he visits the dying and imprisoned sailors who are in the same garrison.
Many troubling questions go through Hornblower's mind. How well will he face death before a firing squad? Will his weak body betray him?
His first lieutenant, William Bush, is also to be tried. At the end of Ship of the Line, Bush lost the lower part of one leg. Will Bush survive the injury and trial?
What will happen to his wife and unborn child after he is dead?
Can he resist sweet temptation, when it is offered?
Can he escape death by firing squad?
Even if he escapes, how can he hope to be exonerated in a court martial for losing the Sutherland? Captains aren't supposed to surrender their vessels, no matter how badly damaged.
If he escapes the court martial, how will he handle being in love with Lady Barbara while being an unhappily married man with a new baby?
Will he ever have a chance to command a vessel again?
Anyone who has ever known self-doubt will find Hornblower's trauma realistic and refreshing. He becomes more like an ordinary person with normal feelings in this book. As a result, I found Hornblower to be much more appealing here than when his brilliant intellect guided him to smooth success in the earlier books.
Eventually, Hornblower finds himself wanting in many of these regards . . . but moves on. Ultimately, he faces new satisfactions and disappointments that indicate to him that his idealistic, perfectionist view of the world is a flawed one. Everyone else is merely human as well. Hornblower is deeply disappointed.
Forester raises an interesting point in the novel. There are real heroes in the book. These people are true to themselves and have total integrity. Public adulation will never be theirs, however. On the other hand, the world needs heroes . . . and new ones will be created, whether or not they deserve the honor. The possibility of remaining a real hero is improved by not having to deal with the issues that can tempt one away from heroism and integrity. So Bush is shown to be a real hero, while Hornblower is simply a self-doubting actor who is extraordinarily capable of creating great results.
The book does a magnificent job of using the title theme throughout. Having struck his colours on the Sutherland, Hornblower now flies his colours again in this book in every sense of that phrase. Watch for the subtleties of how this is done as you read the book.
If you know French, you will enjoy the challenge of imagining how Hornblower manufacturers phrases from his limited command of the language to accomplish what needs to be done. As I read the book, I mentally made the necessary translations.
The book is also interesting for displaying the consequences for the French of being under Napoleon's rule. Hornblower excoriates the Corsican tyrant in the earlier novels, but here we see that others are being squashed underneath authority's boot as well. Many of the social observations about the French people in 1811 are very nicely done in this book.
What is more important: Being fearless or overcoming your weaknesses? What can you do today to overcome your weaknesses and help others to do the same?

Perhaps the best Hornblower book

My favorite of the Hornblower series. Both a good look at the character development of Hornblower and Bush, and a great sea yarn. As with many other reviewers of this series, I have been through it several times. First read Hornblower as the 3-volume single book "Captain Horatio Hornblower" in high school. It includes Beat to Quarters, Ship of the Line and Flying Colours, and I suggest that new readers start with these 3 and then go back to Midshipman Hornblower and read the rest of the series in chronological order. These are great books for action and sea lore, but also interesting for the introspection into the psychology of warrors and conduct in battle.

A Daring Escape For Hornblower

'Flying Colours' is undoubtedly one of the best books in the Hornblower saga. The novel begins with Hornblower a prisoner of the French and soon to stand trial in Paris for piracy. As he and his trusty first mate liuetenant Bush are transported through France they sieze a chance to escape and a thrilling adventure follows. This is the seventh book in the Hornblower saga, picking up right where 'Ship of the Line' left off and setting the stage for 'Lord Hornblower,' arguably the best in the series. Wonderful!

Written in 1931, Tintin in America was chronologically the third Tintin adventure but is generally considered the first in the "official" canon. The stereotypes probably fit how a European would have looked at the New World, from Al Capone's gangsters in Chicago to a Native American tribe in the unfortunately named Redskin City, as Tintin and Snowy escape one peril after another in pursuit of villain Bobby Smiles. It's one of Herge's least complex--and least entertaining--tales, still worth a read but not a good introduction to the series as a whole. --David Horiuchi

Hergé, one of the most famous Belgians in the world, was a comics writer and artist. The internationally successful Adventures of Tintin are his most well-known and beloved works. They have been translated into 38 different languages and have inspired such legends as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. He wrote and illustrated for The Adventures of Tintin until his death in 1983.

Satire and serial thrills as our heroes race through the USA

Although it begins with a precise date (1931) and location (Chicago) and features a real historical figure (Al Capone), 'Tintin In America' is Herge's tribute to the mythical America of dime novels and silent serials (especially gangster stories and Westerns). There's a real 'Perils Of Pauline' quality to Tintin's misadventures, which see the young reporter and his faithful terrier Snowy attempt to clean Chicago of gangsters, and which includes trapdoors, underground passages, falls from cliffs broken by handy branches, tetherings to railway lines etc. On their arrival, the pair are plunged into a hectic series of mishaps - they are kidnapped by a mob stooge in a steel-shuttered limousine; sawing their way out, they are met by police, and give chase; just as the nabbed hood is about to squeal, he is knocked out by a boomerang, whose owner they pursue in a gun-stuttering chase which ends in the first of many vehicular accidents. Throughout, Tintin will be gassed, dumped into Lake Michigan, shot at by a professional sniper, captured by Red Indians, have his brakeless train dynamited, and be thrown into a mincer. Welcome to America!
The simple-minded pleasures of these melodrama cliches are supplemented by a sophisticated and often quite savage critique on modern America (having tackled Bolshevik Russia in the previous adventure), an America on the brink of globalising superpowerdom, a critique that invokes the past to indict the present. The Red Indian sequence at first seems in dubious taste, with the warriors easily manipulated by a gang leader into mutilating Tintin - their knee-jerk savagery and comical rituals are the sad cliches of many a Western. But in the book's most perturbing sequence, Tintin accidentally hits oil on their land; they are speedily thrown off the reservation, and oil wells, banks and a new city erected in its place; a brilliant, shocking encapsulation of the long and terrible history that underlies bright modern America. The gangster epidemic is linked to police and presidential corruption, while the tendency of famed American democracy and justice to degenerate into mob rule and lynching is unflinchingly pinpointed, as are the ecological crimes of big business. In fact, Herge sees American capitalism as a form of cannibalism - a sausage-grinding plant is a front for disposing of gangland enemies, their flesh mingled with animal meat for sale (the leader of the gang is a dead ringer for Foucault!). Conversely, Tintin is at one point rescued by a labor strike! One frame must have registered on the young Jean-Luc Godard, in which Tintin passes a landscape of car-wreckage overlooked by advertising hoardings. The irony of the story is that America, once so new, innocent, a beacon of hope where the world's oppressed could find refuge, has become as corrupt as the Old World, to which Tintin must return ito protect HIS innocence.
Herge's satirical instinct does not preclude a great love for the LOOK of America, with its precisionist skyscraperscapes, and vast prairie spaces. Herge deliberately streamlines his animation, drawing in bold, uncluttered strokes and strong, bright colours, giving some indication of the size and modernity of America, as well as its anonymity, conformity and assembly line mentality. The nocturnal scenes, in which the overall brightness becomes deeply mysterious, are particularly beautiful. I dare anyone who views the flabbergasting scene of Tintin clambering across an endless skyscrapter not to feel dizzy. Within his frames, Herge creates an extraordinary dynamism of movement. I particularly love it when characters walk on the border of the frame, as if getting ready to leap from it.

Herge did better later

As a child, I read all of the Tintin books in Swedish, except the first one "Tintin in the Soviets". As an adult living in the U.S., I am reading most of them again to my children, but this time in English. Herge's first three Tintin books are not as good as his later books, and this was his third book. "Tintin in Congo" is the only Tintin book that I have read that is worse than this one. "Tintin in America" portrays America with an old fashioned European prejudice that is unrealistic and unflattering. His portrayal of the Indians is borderline racist, and the plot is essentially "gangster tries to kill Tintin, Tintin miraculously escapes" repeated a couple of dozen times. In a sense Tintin is a super hero with "luck" as his super power, and this becomes tiresome. The plot is silly, and the book is certainly not a history lesson.

Kids seven and below could enjoy this book, older kids will consider it stupid. If Herge instead had written "Tintin in Sweden" at this time, all the Swedes would have been blond, stupid, and quiet. There would be polar bears and reindeers in the streets, Samis would have been portrayed in an insulting way, and Tintin would have been repeatedly attacked by gnomes. Just to put this book in a Swedish perspective (for fellow Swedes). Humor has changed since 1932, and so did Herge's soon after (1934).

Having said that, the book is still entertaining, in its own way, and my kids have asked me to read it a few times, which I have. If you or your kids like Tintin books then buy it, but don't let this one be your first. Herge's master pieces came later in history. My favorites are "Tintin in Tibet", "Blue Lotus", "Flight 714", "The crab with the golden claw", and "The Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun", but I really like all of the later ones.

Tintin Before Becoming Tintin

Reading "Tintin In America" is not for today's children; the ageless charm of the comic-adventure series is still at least a book away from arriving.

Serious fans may enjoy this view of where Hergé's head was at before the series matured into a more popular form. Be warned, though: "Tintin In America" is a choppy ride.

It's 1931, and gangster-ridden Chicago is in need of dire cleaning. Mobsters tremble at the approach of Tintin, "world reporter number one," not to mention Tintin's loyal wire-haired terrier, Snowy. Al Capone, who has tangled with Tintin in the past, sets up the plot in the second panel: "Not one single day does he spend in Chicago."

Capone is the only real-life figure to make an appearance in a Tintin comic; ironically given his ultimatum Tintin winds up making short work of him. The focus then moves to other gangsters, in particular Bobby Smiles, who leads Tintin on a westward chase that involves him with American Indians, oil, railroad chases, and a close shave at a slaughterhouse.

There are a lot of close shaves in this Tintin installment, originally written from 1931-32 as weekly magazine installments with plenty of sudden changes of pace and cliffhangers to be resolved very quickly and illogically in the next panel. This is what Belgian youngsters wanted at the time, and what Hergé delivers. In time, he would find a way to smooth out the lurches in his storycraft for book form, but those days were still to come.

Also still to come at this point in the series is Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus, the Thompson/Thomson Twins, and other sundry characters, both good and evil. Bobby Smiles is a particularly bland kind of villain, and the other baddies here (including Capone) fairly interchangeable. Tintin and Snowy actually have conversations in "Tintin In America," which is an adjustment for those like me who think of the pup as a kind of mute stand-in for the audience. It makes sense when you consider Hergé needed a means for delivering exposition.

Those seeing the cover and fearing politically incorrect content needn't fear: The American Indians featured in "Tintin In America" are not negatively treated, except in their naive trust of white men. In fact, the book becomes in places a shrill anti-American, anti-capitalist polemic. Whatever your own politics may be, the sometimes unsubtle posturing here gets in the way of the entertainment, already thin on the mystery front and pocked by coincidences and about-faces.

"Tintin In America" does have ample humor, darker than one is used to from the series. In keeping with the height of the Great Depression in which it was written, a radio bulletin announces: "24 banks have failed, 24 managers are in jail. Thirty-five babies have been kidnapped, 44 hoboes have been lynched." Other laughs are more innocent, like the way a tied-down Tintin is saved from being run over by a speeding train, or a meeting of the Distressed Gangsters Association in protest of Tintin's "unfair discrimination."

The book is too herky-jerky in its narrative, and uneven in its tone, to really be enjoyed as a classic Tintin story. A child given it as an introduction to Tintin can hardly be blamed for never going back. Tintin fans will get more out of it, seeing our hero at a time when he was still finding his feet.
