Simply Amazing

Coming from a girl with social anxiety disorder. Watamote hits dangerously close to home, and it's scary how much I can identify with Tomoko. It's hilarious, it's painful to read, its impossible to put down. If you have any idea what you're in for and are even slightly interested, pick this up. You'll be surprised just how good this is. It also stands up very well against volumes 1 and 2. In my opinion, it's the best yet!

So Similar it's Scary!

I love what the writers have done with this series. They made a character that many people (including me) can identify with. She is not beautiful, or super intelligent, or charismatic. She is normal. So many things she does are so typical of a fifteen year old girl. She is kinda perverted and wants to impress people. The part about wanting to get groped and then when she thought it was happening she didn't like it? I think that would hit close to home for a lot of young girls. The part where she commented on girls who eat lunch in the bathroom? That was me in high school. I think a lot of us are under the delusion when we get out of middle school that we are rising from hell to Heaven, when really we are rising to hell part 2! I am out of school so the series is a bunch of laughs but it wouldn't have been back then. So I say if you identify with her (or just like laughing at others misfortune) you should pick up this book! But you should pick up one and two first because unlike a lot of slice of life stories, the new chapters build off the old ones and it does matter what order you read them in! But that is one of the best parts. Well, see you again!

About the Author
Cecil Scott "C.S." Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (27 August 1899 - 2 April 1966), an English novelist who rose to fame with tales of naval warfare. His most notable works were the 12-book Horatio Hornblower series, depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic era, and "The African Queen" (1935; filmed in 1951 by John Huston). His novels "A Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colours" were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.

Start with this one.

If you're new to the Hornblower series, start with this one. Then read Ship of the Line, then Flying Colors. The three are practically a triptych, whereas the others all feel like they have space between them. Also, since Forester actually wrote Beat To Quarters first, there's in 'introductory' quality to it that no other book in the series has. The series compares favorably with the Aubrey/Maturin series I think. Odd that they were both cut short by the deaths of their respective authors.
In short, start with this and the next two as a trilogy, then proceed in any order you want.

I ignored an actual battle to read this...

...or, to be more precise, I sat within yards of a major Civil War re-enactment so engrossed in this book that I managed to ignore artillery and musket fire. I am a big fan of the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, but previously looked down my nose at Hornblower, I think because I knew it solely from TV and movies. This book never slows down for a minute--not just battles but ship repair and revictualling seem gripping in the hands of Forester.
Based on the films, I was not expecting Hornblower to show much internal life--he always seems to be superhuman on screen, but in the book he must struggle with his softer nature to develop his imperious style. Likewise I expected nothing interesting in the way of female characters, but it was a happy surprise to find Lady Barbara Wellesley on board ship.
If you will forgive a few O'Brian/Forrester comparisons: O'Brian is funnier. Forrester's battle scenes are a bit easier for me to follow. Hornblower is a more interesting or at least complex character than Aubrey, but O'Brian has the advantage of Maturin, who not only adds character but allows for dialogue rather than the perennial internal monologues Hornblower has with himself because he has no one of rank to talk to.
I hope that more seasoned readers of the series will agree with this appeal to newer readers: Even if you have read neither author, this book is a good place to start.

In my opinion the best Hornblower book written.

I first read BEAT TO QUARTERS when I borrowed it from a public library in 1940. It is now 1998 and the third copy of the book is in my book case, the other two copies, being paper-backs, having been read until worn out.
I might add that, in my opinion, any aspiring writer would do well to read Forester, not to copy his style, but to realise that any good author can entertain, but only the great can enthrall; and only the greatest can make you "see" a character (even a minor one) in only two short lines of print.
His death robbed the reading world of one of its most readable authors.

AWESOME Book!!!

I am a huge fan of the KH series. It's a great book for anyone who is a KH fan. Personally I love the depictions of Sora, Donald, Goofy, and of course my absolute favorite character in Chain Of Memories Axel. Axel seems to have more of a personality in the book. I love the fight with Sora & Axel. . . I absolutely love this book and would recommend the manga to anyone who loves the game series. The manga is funny, adorable, and just plain awesome in my opinion.

This Manga was better than the Original series, and I loved every inch of it. I have read this at least seven times, and I only got it a month ago. It was great, the storyline met my expectations, and I was happy to see that Riku appears a couple times, though the story mainly revolves around Sora. I was still happy, because Riku is by far my favorite character. But anyway, you should seriously read this, guys. You will be amazed. Truly.

This manga not just celebrates the solid RPG Chain of Memories, but it playfully mocks and parodies the series with its own charm. It's both deep and comedic. I absolutely love the artist takes advantage of the manga and draws in the Organization rooms: security TV screens, dart boards, book shelves, and a fried chicken bucket that spoofs KFC. If you want a great manga with laughs and wit, check it out.

About the Author
John Fowles (1926-2005) was educated at Oxford and subsequently lectured in English at universities in Greece and the UK. The success of his first novel, The Collector, published in 1963, allowed him to devote all his time to writing. His books include the internationally acclaimed and bestselling novels The Magus, The French Lieutenant's Woman, and Daniel Martin. Fowles spent the last decades of his life on the southern coast of England in the small harbor town of Lyme Regis.

Chilling study of psychology

With the exception of Nabokov's Lolita, this is the best book I have ever read. From the very moment I laid my hands on it I could not put it down and I have re-read it many times since. The premise is as such: a clerk (Frederick Clegg) becomes obsessed with a pretty art student (Miranda Grey) and holds her captive in his basement. Half of the story is told from Clegg's point of view in a recollective style, whilst the rest (the middle section) is relayed through Miranda's diary. The obvious differences in their views on life and the impossibility of them ever reaching a common ground is what grips you. Brilliant characterization and a brilliant study of human behaviour. Many people have suggested that The Magus was Fowle's best work, but The Collector puts it in the shade. Compelling.

As a fan of the psychological thriller genre, it was interesting to read one of the first

Considered by many to be the first psychological thriller, The Collector is the story of Frederick Clegg, a lonely, obsessive man, and Miranda, the beautiful young art student whom he kidnaps and holds captive in his basement.

The story begins with Clegg’s perspective, and then switches a third of the way through to Miranda’s diary entries, allowing considerable insight into both characters. In many ways they are opposites: where Miranda has a vibrant zest for life and a passion for creating beauty, Clegg is consumed by a desire to capture and possess the beauty that has always been absent from his life.

It’s an interesting character study. And while Fowles never makes excuses for Clegg’s actions, he carefully presents him as a human rather than a monster. I was fascinated (and not really surprised) to learn that several serial killers and kidnappers have referenced The Collector as the inspiration and justification for their crimes.

My problems with the book have little to do with the book itself and more to do with what I have been conditioned to expect from psychological thrillers. It’s hard reading a book that was ahead of its time or the first of its kind when you’re already so familiar with what the genre has become. Fowles’ story may have been inventive and shocking when it was published, but approaching it decades later, I found the plot to be rather predictable and diluted. Again, this is one of those situations where “it’s not you (the book), it’s me.”

Ultimately, I’m glad to have read The Collector to understand and appreciate its influence on the genre.

"The Collector" will haunt you....

Much time has passed since John Fowles, now a major international author, first wrote and published "The Collector", in 1963. In many ways, it was the prequel to a myriad of psychological thrillers (by other writers) involving obsession. Fowles, an enormous success based on this, his first novel, has gone on to a distinguished career and writing that is far more complex and layered than what we encounter here.

That said, reading "The Collector", one cannot help but be impressed at how Fowles sets the story, and how the point of view of the reader is rather voyeuristic -- we see the entire plot by reading the journals of the two protagonists, peering into a series of events they share by contrasting point of view.

Fowles leads us into the story through the eyes of Ferdinand Clegg, a clerk who wins a sum of money in "the pools". He sends his odd relatives off on a global jaunt, and uses the bulk of the money to buy a lonely cottage with a cellar that he turns into a secure prison of sorts. The object of his attention is a young and vibrant art student named Miranda. All his life Clegg (or Caliban, as Miranda dubs him) has collected butterflies. He now means to use his skills as a hunter, curator and collector, to possess Miranda, whom he has been stalking for several months.

In the plotting that is Clegg's, Fowles is remarkably detached from the world, helping his readers see it from the slightly oppressed viewpoint of the British middle class; only Clegg has thoughts and needs suppressed for many years, that are frightening in their focused simplicity. Of the capture of Miranda, Clegg relates:

"It finally ten days later happened as it sometimes does with butterflies. I mean you go to a place where you know you may see something rare and you don't, but the next time not looking for it you see it on a flower right in front of you, handed to you on a plate, as they say."

In reading Clegg's story, the reader feels touched, albeit briefly, by his madness, which is wrapped in the coat of a lonely young man.

The second part of the book allows the reader to come to know Miranda, through her secret journal. As vibrant as Clegg is dull, Miranda has been very caught up in the life of an artist, including her college dabbling with a teacher-type paramour, known to the reader as "G.P.". Much of what is absorbing in Miranda's world ceases with her capture. Her portion of the tale is a struggle with the alternating fear and loathing of Caliban, and the instinctive need to understand him, so that she might use that understanding to seek her freedom. Her faith in God ebbing, her despair and disdain for her captor growing, Miranda's shattered by her captivity. She says of him:

"He's not human; he's an empty space disguised as a human."

Inevitably, at the close of the captivity, the end of the story is told by Caliban, detached from the role he plays in how Miranda's story ends. Freshly shocked from this, the reader begins Chapter 4 unsettled, only to find that Caliban has disconnected from what he's done, and is preparing to do it again by stalking a young girl named Marian. It is this reopening of the cycle of violence and oppression that truly makes your blood run cold, truly introduces you to the brilliance that is Fowles' as a writer.

Excellent Choice for Family's "Master Calendar"

The ANSEL ADAMS 2015 WALL CALENDAR is the same as the one sold in retail bookstores at year's end, but I like to buy it from Amazon as soon as it is offered, so that I can write in the next year's appointments (beyond January) as soon as they are scheduled. (The calendar always includes a full page for January of the following year, but my advance appointments usually extend beyond January.)

The main reason that I buy this calendar, year after year, is that the extra-large date boxes provide ample space for recording all of my family's medical appointments, upcoming meetings and activities, and other date-related reminders. When hanging open to a month, the calendar measures 15-1/2" wide by 25" long; and the monthly photo and calendar pages each measure 15-1/2" wide by 12-1/2" long.

Each month's calendar page includes a mini-calendar for last month and next month, and indicates holidays, moon phases, and important items like daylight savings time changes. The black and white photographs by Ansel Adams are beautiful, and every year's selection is different.

This is probably one of the best constructed wall calendars out there

This is probably one of the best constructed wall calendars out there. It is a generous size. The paper stock is heavy compared to most calendars out there. It is one of the few calendars that are spiral bound as opposed to stapled or glued. the photographs are very good and the boxes for each day of the week are large enough to write a note in. I have been buying this calendar for years now.

Great Wall Calendar - Purchased Annually for Well Over 10 Years Now

I have bought this calendar every year for over ten years now. My husband love black and white photography and Ansel Adams is one of his all time favorites. I have never once over all of these years been disappointed with this purchase. We are very technologically inclined people, e.g. all our appointments go on a shared calendar on our electronic devices. We don't use this to keep track of appointments it's really more of a monthly changing piece of art. However, the squares for each day are plenty big so if you are more of the traditional writing type and not so technologically inclined you will for sure love this calendar. I am happy to say I will continue to purchase this annually for my husband.

Thoughtful history of lost places

I picked up this history of lost cities in a local bookstore and after thumbing through it, immediately decided I needed to own it. Some of the cities I have heard of, some I hadn’t but lost cities are fascinating and I wanted to know more. I could imagine the cities as they were by reading along with de Tocqueville’s narration, and I appreciated the maps to pinpoint their locations. The book does not contain photographs, because of course, these cities don’t exist to take pictures of. After all, a photo of an archaeological dig does not depict what once was, only what is now, which in the case of the older civilizations, in many cases almost nothing exists now. The drawings of what the architecture of the time would have looked like were much more intriguing than a photo would have been.

A Handful of "Lost Cities" Does Not an Atlas Make

An odd little book that spins some interesting tales, but is strangely empty for a volume that purports to be an "atlas" of lost cities. The subject matter is compelling (cities that no longer exist), but there's a definite bias in the selection of places toward Asia and Europe, and many of them ancient locales that don't particularly resonate with contemporary audiences. Just three, little-known sites represent the United States in this "atlas" (and just one in Canada) and the author misses a number that might had improved the interest of this book had they been included.

For instance, what about the "lost city" of Love Canal outside Niagara Falls, New York and the chemical contamination that caused a neighborhood of many blocks to be abandoned? What of the "lost town" sites in and around Richland, Washington, that were subsumed to the wartime creation of the Hanford plutonium works? How could the author have missed Hirshhorn, Ontario, the planned but unbuilt oasis of contemporary art deep in the Canadian wilderness, conceived by uranium magnate and modern art patron Joseph Hirshhorn? And don't forget Fordlandia, Henry Ford's New England township in the Amazonian jungle, a rubber-producing experiment that failed and was abandoned in the last century. Jonestown, Guyana, might have also rated a mention, simply because we all remember Jim Jones and his People's Temple cult and are curious what became of their revolutionary socialist commune in South America.

In short, this "atlas" misses a good deal that would have improved its appeal to readers. And, yes (to agree with other reviewers), it's difficult if not impossible to document ancient city sites through the medium of contemporary photography, leaving artistic re-creation as the next-best visual manner of depiction. But the illustrations in the "Atlas of Lost Cities" are stylized and somewhat crude, and add very little significant information to the adjacent text descriptions of the lost cities that made the cut into this book. They are but glorified cartoons.

This could have been a fun adventure. As it turned out, the "Atlas of Lost Cities" falls short, giving but a tantalizing taste (both in word and picture) of what could have been a compelling volume worthy of its title.

The author does a wonderful job of conjuring up these long-ago places

This is not a travel guide but a history book. It's a thoughtful exploration about bustling worlds that once existed. The author does a wonderful job of conjuring up these long-ago places. There are maps to show location and small drawings to show architectural style at the city's height. I much prefer them to static photos of ruins.

Hilarious, Tragic, and Relatable

This is possibly the greatest graphic novel I've ever read.

It's a remarkable feat when an author can take something like extreme social anxiety and depict the invisible mental agony with such haunting accuracy. It's even more remarkable that, without detracting at all from the power or realism of its portrayal, this same agony can be presented in a way that is at so many points absolutely, insanely hilarious. As someone who used to suffer from extreme shyness, I was astounded by how much I was reminded of my own grade school years upon seeing Tomoko's naive, desperate thought process and her constant failures to escape her wretched social state.

Comedy-wise, the book is pure gold. It is divided into several chapters, each one centered around a different scheme that the protagonist, Tomoko, has hatched up in order to achieve the popularity and recognition that she wants so badly. The schemes are ridiculous, yet the ridiculous is at a level just low enough to where one could easily conceive of a person of Tomoko's age and with her lack of social intelligence actually coming up with it. That's one of the strengths of this book - no matter how far they push the jokes, they never push them to the point where it just becomes a gag manga. It's always believable.

Each of these schemes backfires in a way that is just hilarious. This moment usually occurs at a point where, after some amount of mental rehearsal, the plans that she envisioned so brilliantly in her mind are exposed to the real world and to real people. Tomoko is pathetically delusional and is obsessed with the idea of popularity to the point where it is almost repulsive, and yet it is impossible not to recognize how the curse of crippling shyness (and the forced loneliness that it has imprisoned her in) inevitably made her this way. When her schemes finally do blow up in her face, as they tend to, you can't help but feel a combination of sympathy, delight, and disgust. It's a trip.

Get this book. It's hilarious, tragic, and touching. Perfect for light reading and yet still a work of art in its own way. You won't be sorry.

I've never felt so emotionally attached to a manga before...

If you can relate to Tomoko Kuroki, then you know that anxiety attacks are HORRIBLE and sometimes completely UNAVOIDABLE. They just happen right then and there and there's no turning the page for that heart stopping, and suffocating instant that seems to drag on forever. Watamote is the most honest representation of how most of us social misfits act in our day to day lives. Vol. 2 is a great addition to what is already an awesome story, pointless, but awesome. And you know what? It doesn't matter if it's "pointless" because most of what we do is pointless but we still tackle around it anyway and that's what Tomoko Kuroki has to go through. She just wants to be left alone with some glorious piece and quiet. If you're close to being a xenophobe, a social misfit, or anything close to these two then you'll love "No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guy's Fault I'm Not Popular!" It really tells it as it is, without covering it up with "oh let's give Tomoko some fantastic character development" because that's the least of her worries. The only thing she wants to accomplish is to be able to be recognized by someone....anyone.

Tomoko continues to deliver on the laughs in this continuation of the series. You also cry with her when things get a little sad, because she's such a darned woobie. I really enjoyed it. Definitely pick up a copy, you cannot got wrong. The humor isn't for everyone, especially people who can't tolerate intense awkward situational humor as seen in comedy shows like Louie and Seinfeld.

Comparison of 3 "Guardians of the Galaxy" books for Gradeschoolers

The book is just pretty good, but not the best. If you're debating whether or not to buy this or "Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket and Groot Fight Back", then buy this one. Someone at the publisher got VERY lazy and just used the same illustrations over and over again between the two books. Between the 2 books, there are at least 7 pages that use the exact same illustration, and that's a lot considering each book is 22 and 21 pages respectively. This book covers a lot of the action that happens after the Guardians have teamed up.

The book my son (5 years old) and I prefer to either of these is the "Guardians of the Galaxy: Friends and Foes". It is a better introduction of all of the characters from the movie (explaining that some are 1/2 robot, backgrounds on some, etc.).

Ever After High, Joining the Jr. Novel Game?

For a first junior novel for the Ever After High series, it was actually pretty good. However, it could have been better had it been longer and stuck to the script of the movie like the Monster High Junior novels.

After watching the movie and then reading the book, I noticed there were some weird sequence changes/wording that made the entire scene either rushed and incomplete, or just a bad attempt at being cute and funny.

Crazy happy i could finally finish this manga. I had been dying to finish simce i read half of it online but the rest hadnt been uploaded. So am CRAZY HAPPY i was able to finally complete the series.
-Completely in love with the art & the story's overall storyline and conclusion
