What it Takes to Be Called a Hero
By FredTownWard
Note: The publisher has unfortunately given the same exact titles to both the light novels and the numerically corresponding manga volumes, when they already had the same author and illustrator! Now, since the stories in both are basically identical (except that Volume 5 of the manga only covers from the second part of Chapter 1 through the first part of Chapter 3 of the third novel, leaving the rest to Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Vol. 6 (manga)), chances are that if you love one you will also love the other, with the novels giving you more details and the manga giving you more visuals. However, in order to purchase the version you actually want, you must be sitting on the correct product page.

For the novel click here: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Vol. 5 (novel).
For the manga click here: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Vol. 5 (manga).

Note: Another reason for purchasing both is that some manga volumes include text pieces apparently cut from the novels. For example Vol. 5 (manga) includes a Special Episode "Brother Separated from Sister?" apparently cut from Chapter 1 of Vol. 3 (novel).

Note: An animated TV series has also been produced in Japan and made available at various digital outlets in this country though not yet officially released on home video. Having seen it, I can assert that it is excellent also and tracks the light novels and manga very well, though of necessity it cuts out the most story. TV episodes 10-13 are the adaptation of this novel.

Dungeons & Dragons the Fantasy Roleplaying Game has inspired countless novels and stories (and a hilarious comedy sketch about some gamers with goals somewhat similar to Bell's on Take Down The Grand Master by The Dead Alewives), not to mention an entire industry of roleplaying games, but very few good novels and stories incorporating anything of the game system itself. In fact I'd venture to say that this series is the first success at it and a true joy to read for gamers and non-gamers alike, besides.

The story continues from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Vol. 4 (novel).

As warned by their friends, Bell, Lilly, and Welf discover that the middle floors are a world apart from the upper floors, what with Hellhounds blasting fire at them and weapon wielding Al -Miraj making coordinated attacks. But heeding Eina's sound advice, Lilly's careful planning, Bell's level 2 strength and speed, Welf's anti-magic magic, and their training practice stand them in good stead on Level 13 until they get "pass paraded" by a wounded Takemikazuchi Familia party (basically that means sprinting close past another party and thus dumping the monsters chasing you onto them). It's kind of a dirty trick to play, but adventurers who are honest with themselves realize they might be willing to do it, too, if they got desperate enough. Then a cave-in drops them two floors down to Level 15, destroys most of their supplies and equipment, and breaks Welf's leg. Now facing three middle floors along an unknown path to only the relative safety of level 12, they decide instead to head for the safe zone Lilly knows about on Level 18, a floor that doesn't spawn monsters, that upper level adventurers use as a rest and recovery area, because it is easier to go down than up (just find a hole) and the Level 17 Floor Boss monster will probably not have regenerated since the large Loki Familia expedition from the last book passed through.

Meanwhile, up above, an increasingly frantic goddess Hestia confirms that Bell's party has not returned, though she can tell at least that Bell hasn't died yet. Facing the prospect of losing her beloved one and only familia member, Hestia throws away the rule book and organizes and insists upon accompanying a Quest to save Bell and company that includes the god Hermes (who is up to something he's not telling about) and his chief item maker, the very Takemikazuchi Familia members who "pass paraded" Bell's party, and a certain elf waitress who used to be an adventurer. Everyone and everything comes together in a cataclysmic battle of heroes outdoing heroes against an off the charts Floor Boss spawned where no monster is supposed to be spawned.

The adventure continues in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Vol. 6 (novel).

The Familia Myth continues
By Anime Lover
They thought they were prepared for their first foray into the Middle Castle area of the Dungeon. But the one true thing about the Dungeon is that the rules are always changing, and plans fall apart quickly. When a pass parade traps Bell, Wulf and Lilly in the middle levels can they survive to reach safety, or will Death finally catch up to them?

This is the story of a boy and the goddess that loves him. This will take you to the end of the anime, but not the end of the story as there are 11 novels. I loved this book and read it in one afternoon. I cannot wait to see what is in store next for the Little Rookie and his friends and hope that a second season of the anime is on the works

Great series! Love the world building and the characters. Team rabbit.
By Daniel Zahn
Finally the books caught up to the Anime. So many extra details that are not possible in the the anime. The tension as it builds to the conclusion of this book is amazing. I was at the edge of my seat through much of this book. Loving every minute of this series. Looking forward to what comes next!

I wish the translations were a little smarter about mentioning who said something closer to when it was said. Sometimes you get two or three statements and then the next paragraph explains whats going on or who was speaking.

Amazon.com Review
In Natural Capitalism, three top strategists show how leading-edge companies are practicing "a new type of industrialism" that is more efficient and profitable while saving the environment and creating jobs. Paul Hawken and Amory and Hunter Lovins write that in the next century, cars will get 200 miles per gallon without compromising safety and power, manufacturers will relentlessly recycle their products, and the world's standard of living will jump without further damaging natural resources. "Is this the vision of a utopia? In fact, the changes described here could come about in the decades to come as the result of economic and technological trends already in place," the authors write.

They call their approach natural capitalism because it's based on the principle that business can be good for the environment. For instance, Interface of Atlanta doubled revenues and employment and tripled profits by creating an environmentally friendly system of recycling floor coverings for businesses. The authors also describe how the next generation of cars is closer than we might think. Manufacturers are already perfecting vehicles that are ultralight, aerodynamic, and fueled by hybrid gas-electric systems. If natural capitalism continues to blossom, so much money and resources will be saved that societies will be able to focus on issues such as housing, contend Hawken, author of a book and PBS series called Growing a Business, and the Lovinses, who cofounded and directed the Rocky Mountain Institute, an environmental think tank. The book is a fascinating and provocative read for public-policy makers, as well as environmentalists and capitalists alike. --Dan Ring

From Publishers Weekly
Hawken (The Ecology of Commerce) and Amory and Hunter Lovins of the Rocky Mountain Institute, an environmental think tank, have put together an ambitious, visionary monster of a book advocating "natural capitalism." The short answer to the logical question (What is natural capitalism?) is that it is a way of thinking that seeks to apply market principles to all sources of material value, most importantly natural resources. The authors have two related goals: first, to show the vast array of ecologically smart options available to businesses; second, to argue that it is possible for society and industry to adopt them. Hawken and the Lovinses acknowledge such barriers as the high initial costs of some techniques, lack of knowledge of alternatives, entrenched ways of thinking and other cultural factors. In looking at options for transportation (including the development of ultralight, electricity-powered automobiles), energy use, building design, and waste reduction and disposal, the book's reach is phenomenal. It belongs to the galvanizing tradition of Frances Moore Lapp?'s Diet for a Small Planet and Stewart Brand's The Whole Earth Catalog. Whether all that the authors have organized and presented so earnestly here can be assimilated and acted on by the people who run the world is open to question. But readers with a capacity for judicious browsing and grazing can surely learn enough in these pages to apply well-reasoned pressure. Charts and graphs, with accompanying CD-ROM. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Hawken is the author of The Ecology of Commerce (1993) and is best known for his PBS series Growing a Business. Amory and Hunter Lovins founded the Rocky Mountain Institute, which promotes efficient resource use, and Amory has been called the "godfather" of alternative energy. The three have joined forces here to set a blueprint for sustainable development. The authors argue that it is possible for companies to reduce energy and materials consumption by up to 90 percent but still increase profits, production, and employment. They outline the four strategies that underlie "natural capitalism" and, using hypercars and neighborhood land use and superefficient buildings as examples, show how these strategies are being applied. They also identify ways resources are being wasted and explain the principles of "resource productivity." Throughout their book, the authors indicate new business opportunities that will be created by practicing "natural capitalism." Accompanying the book will be a CD composed of "KnowledgeMaps," which will be "visual, interactive conceptual models" that complement the material in each chapter and include hyperlinks to relevant sites on the Internet. Natural Capitalism Right on the Money
By Jim Durrett, VP - Environmental Affairs, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce
In the summer of 1999, the Harvard Business Review treated the business community to a glimpse of a bold new model for business and industry in the 21st century. The HBR has been filling requests ever since for the article by Amory Lovins, L. Hunter Lovins and Paul Hawken titled "A Road Map for Natural Capitalism." The article described how businesses could profit by employing strategies built around a more productive use of natural resources. The authors explained in a very practical, yet compelling manner how these strategies could go a long way toward solving many current environmental problems.
Business readers and anyone concerned about the changing global economy and its impact on the ecosystem will want more than copies of the HBR article once they realize it was actually a tantalizing synopsis of the authors' new book, "Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution" (Little, Brown, 1999). This important book can take its place alongside such touchstone volumes as "Future Shock," "Megatrends " and "The New New." The authors describe in vivid detail how business and industry can gain competitive advantage through a new business model based on doing much more with much less.
The authors set out to prove that changing realities of the information economy and global competitiveness are already transforming industry and commerce in ways unforeseen even a few years ago. The new business model takes into account the values of all forms of "capital" including human, manufactured, financial, and natural. "Natural Capitalism" starts with an elegantly simple premise: economies need no longer be based on the idea that human capital is finite and natural resources are infinitely abundant when the obvious truth of the 21st Century is exactly the opposite.
With mounting confidence, Lovins, Lovins and Hawken predict that the latest industrial revolution will create "a vital economy that uses radically less material and energy." Businesses that recognize the trend toward this new type of industrialism will gain advantage over their less alert competitors. Those that postpone this shift will be left behind and will eventually, make themselves irrelevant in the new economy.
Theirs is not merely a detailed updating of Buckminster Fuller's "small is beautiful" thesis. Rather, the authors describe a step-by-step process of business restructuring that should result in more efficiency at the corporate, national and global level. Such a process, if carried out across several industries simultaneously, would make it much easier for governments to promote social equity and conserve or even restore the natural ecosystems reaching across traditional borders.
This next stage of industrialism, the authors' "natural capitalism," is founded on four core business strategies already being adopted by the most innovative corporations across the globe. The strategies suggest that companies need to:
1) employ technology and design innovations to use resources much more productively. This results, of course, in companies using fewer resources, reducing pollution, and setting the stage to create more jobs;
2) practice "biomimicry" by redesigning industrial systems to be more like biological systems, leading to an elimination of even the concept of waste;
3) shift from an economy based on goods and purchases to an economy based on service and flow. This concept leads to a quantum shift in how manufacturing companies service their clients, especially in terms of inventories, sales strategies, etc; and
4) reinvest in "natural capital" to sustain, restore and expand the resources on which industry, and ultimately all life, and therefore all livelihood, depends.
"Natural Capitalism" is not a "gloom and doom, industry vs. the environment" anti-consumerism rant. Neither do the authors fall into the trap of proposing a Pollyanna hypothesis that begins with "if only we could change our basic cultural values." Lovins, Lovins and Hawken make elegant use of facts and examples from several industrial sectors and actual case histories of large and small companies based in the US and overseas.
Consider the "Hypercar," a synthesis of emerging automobile technologies developed in 1991 by the Rocky Mountain Institute, the think tank founded by Amory and Hunter Lovins. Imagine "a family sedan, sport-utility, or pickup truck that combines Lexus comfort and refinement, Mercedes stiffness, Volvo safety, BMW acceleration, Taurus price, four-to eightfold improved fuel economy (that is, 80 to 200 miles per gallon), a 600 to 800 mile range between refuelings, and ZERO emissions."
If such technological innovations sound like eco-friendly pipe dreams, think again. Today, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and others are actively competing to bring this revolutionary vehicle to the market within the next few years.
As global a corporate presence as DuPont is already feeling (and no doubt, influencing) a sea change in manufacturing philosophy. The Delaware-based chemical giant is on record in favor of "comprehensive resource productivity". In DuPont's words, "sustainable growth has to be focused on a functionality, not a product. The next major step toward sustainable growth is to improve the value of our products and services per unit of natural resources employed." To that end, DuPont is "down-gauging" its polyester film, making it thinner, stronger and more valuable so that it may sell less material at a higher price.
What the Lovins and Hawken have given us with "Natural Capitalism" is nothing less than an up-to-date business manual for the next century, complete with clear explanations and solid, real world examples. Their thinking finds common ground between business and environmental interests and makes the common sense case for how the two outlooks are merging into a new, practical, eco-friendly approach to making a profit.
Just as business and civic leaders in Atlanta and elsewhere are redefining how sprawling cities should grow, "Natural Capitalism" redefines how businesses and ultimately the entire planet should grow to sustain a prosperous and equitable quality of life for the indefinite future.

Natural Capitalism is a MUST READ for MBA's, CEO's, Politici
By Spark
Throughout this extensively researched book, the three authors (Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins and Hunter Lovins) eloquently describe the mind-set required of businesses that wish to evolve their models of business successfully into the next millennium.
By providing a mix of real-world examples, coupled with logical extensions to the philosophies that have dominated main stream economic theories for the majority of the 20th century - the authors allow us to peak through the curtain - to catch a glimpse of what the world will be like in 50 years time.
Natural Capitalism espouses a vision of a world where long term profit is the driving force behind global strategy, where 'whole system thinking' dominates rather than simplistic compartmentalised agendas.
We have only just discovered the technologies that allow us to assess the impact of the techno-industrial systems which we have grown over the past 150 years. With a little imagination, and a lot of logic Natural Capitalism gently points out the way forward. Toward a trajectory where the (re)application of such systems can construct a new environment, together with the economic opportunities and rewards that come from such an evolution...
This a must read book for all entrepreneurs, businessmen, politicians, researchers, economists, environmentalists, educationalists in fact just about anybody who wishes to live both comfortably, profitably and in harmony during the next century. It argues for an extension to the economic theories that pervade organisational thinking, for a more realistic assessment of the life cycle costs involved in business processes, and above all for a more realistic assessment of the value of natural resources.
This book will help you think. This book will help you live. This book will help you work. This book will help add value to your life... READ IT!

Beyond Darwin
By Robert Morris
As this new century begins, if there is only one book which everyone on the planet should read, it would be Natural Capitalism. Why is it so important? In my opinion, because it provides the most convincing, the most compelling argument in support of Wendell Berry's assertion that "what is good for the world will be good for us." Darwin's concept of natural selection becomes irrelevant if there is no environment in which such selection can occur. The authors introduce us to "The Next Industrial Revolution" with all oif its emerging possibilities. In subsequent chapters, they continue to examine natural capitalism in terms of "four central strategies": radical resource productivity, biomimicry, service and flow economy, and investment in it. According to the authors, natural capitalism "is about choices we can make that can start to tip economic and social outcomes in positive directions. And it is already occurring -- because it is necessary, possible, and practrical." For me, the information provided in Chapter 3 was almost incomprehensible in terms of the nature and extent of waste. Of the $9 trillion spent every year in the United States, at least $2 trillion is wasted annually. How? For example: Highway accidents ($150 billion), highway congestion ($100 billion in lost productivity), total hidden costs of driving (nearly $1 trillion), nonessential/fraudulent healthcare ($65 billion), inflated and unnecessary medical overhead ($250 billion), and crime ($450 billion). All of this waste can and should be reduced, if not eliminated. What the authors present, in effect, is a blueprint for the survival of the planet. All manner of statistical evidence supports their specific recommendations. Unless "The Next Industrial Revolution" succeeds in implementing those recommendations, natural capitalism will eventually be depleted ...and no one left to regret its loss.

Reflections of Eden: My Years with the Orangutans of Borneo, by Birute M. F. Galdikas

From the first, it was an adventure. In 1971, at age twenty-five, Galdikas left the placid world of American academia for the remote jungles of Indonesian Borneo. Living with her husband in a primitive camp, she became surrogate mother to a "family" of ex-captive orangutans - and gradually adjusted to the blood-sucking leeches, swarms of carnivorous insects, and constant humidity that rotted her belongings in the first year. Her first son spent the early years of his life at Camp Leakey with adopted orangutans as his only playmates. The wild orangutans Galdikas studied and the ex-captives she rehabilitated became an extended family of characters no less vivid than her human companions. Throatpouch, a huge and irritable grouch, fought off rivals for the right to claim adolescent Priscilla as his mate. Handsome Cara at first tried to rid the forest of its human intruder by hurling dead branches at Galdikas from the canopy above. Little Sugito, rescued from a cramped cage and returned to the jungle claimed Galdikas as his mother and clung to her fiercely, night and day, for months. A groundbreaking chronicler of the orangutans' life cycle, Galdikas also describes the threats that increasingly menace them: the battles with poachers and loggers, the illicit trade in infant orangutans, the frustrations of official bureaucracy. Her story is a rare combination of personal epiphany, crucial scientific discovery, and international impact - a life of human and environmental challenge. Reflections of Eden is the third act of a drama that has captivated the world: the story of a pioneering primatologist, a world leader in conservation, and a remarkable woman.

Primatologist Galdikas's memoir of her years spent conducting the first extended study of the life of orangutans in the wild.

From Library Journal
Until now, fans of primatologist Galdikas had to make do with brief accounts of her life and work in books such as Evelyn Gallardo's Among the Orangutans (Chronicle, 1993) and Sy Montgomery's Walking with the Great Apes (LJ 2/1/91). Galdikas, along with Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, was recruited by Louis Leaky to conduct long-term field studies of the great apes, in her case orangutans. While not as famous (or notorious) as her colleagues, Galdikas has been a phenomenal success in both her scientific studies and the conservation of orangutans. She also became immersed in Indonesian culture, marrying and raising children with a native Bornean. This book is a wonderful account of both her scientific work and personal experiences with a harsh environment, the loss of beloved orangutans, and the end of her first marriage to Canadian Rod Brindamour. Her humanity, courage, and dedication shine on every page. Highly recommended for all libraries, this book will inspire young scientists and enthrall anyone interested in orangutans and the rigors of modern field research.

From Booklist
Galdikas is a "trimate," one of three women who devoted themselves to the study of great apes in the wild. Her zeal for learning about orangutans emulates Jane Goodall's fascination with chimpanzees and the late Dian Fossey's dedication to gorillas. Not only is Galdikas a brilliant, courageous, and persevering scientist, but she is also a wonderfully engaging and generous writer. She tells the entire mesmerizing story of how she came to be the world's foremost orangutan expert, eloquently sharing her passion for these red-haired, arboreal, intelligent, gentle and reclusive yet personable creatures. As she recounts her exhausting efforts to track and observe the orangutans of Borneo's rain forest, Galdikas also candidly describes the unexpected impact her mission has on her personal life. Some of the most challenging and humbling episodes involve her serving as a surrogate mother for orphaned orangutan infants. As she gazes into the eyes of her beloved "cross-species" children, she catches a "glimpse of what we were before we were fully human. . .a reflection of Eden," a revelation that inspires much musing on the significance of our close genetic bond to our primate cousins. Galdikas' detailed chronicle is alive with captivating portraits of individual orangutans--from "vigorous and decisive" Cara to clinging Sugito, amorous TP, and loving Akmad--and charged with the forces of love, determination, grief, and recovery. One of my favourite books of all time
By A Customer
I was lucky enough to be one of Galdikas' undergraduate students in her Primate Behaviour course here in Simon Fraser University, Canada. She is very inspirational and I have great admiration for her life-long commitment to the orangutans. This book reflects this commitment and love plus adds lots of interesting facts on orangutan behaviour. I enjoyed her engaging writing style and found this book to be a quick read. Definitely a book that I would recommend to not only inspiring biologists, but to the general public as well.

Leakey's third "angel"
By Amazon Customer
The other two "angels" on their mission of Great Ape rescue were of course Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey who studied respectively Chimpanzee's and Mountain Gorillas.(Fossey we know died for her cause). Birute Galdikas started later than the others (1971) and her Great Ape - Orangutans - were also less known and in some respects, less regarded than the others.
Does Galdikas' work in Borneo and her story in REFLECTIONS OF EDEN remedy this oversight? Only somewhat as this book is as much an autobiography as it is a natural history of the "men of the forest". Galdikas' affection for her mentor Louis Leakey is obvious as is her fondness for her fellow primatologists. "Dian, Jane Goodall, and I were family. Louis Leakey had recognized us as kindred souls and become our spiritual father." This connectedness she felt extended to the mystical. When Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 Galdikas tells us "even before I learned of her death, I knew Dian would be killed, I knew this was her destiny."
It should not be a surprise to read here that a scientist that feels this way will express a high degree of passion about her subjects. All three of these primatologists at different times have talked about "my apes" and this attachment is certainly reciprocated by the Orangutans. Galdikas tells about Sugito an orphaned young male "who selected me as his one and only, his mother". Orangs are the most arboreal and reclusive of the Great Apes and this naturally provides a challenge to studying them. Galdikas has nevertheless learned more about their social behavior than any other researcher. She mixes these insights in with her own life in the jungle at "Camp Leakey" and with life in Indonesia as a whole. In this context Galdikas even recognizes that for a Third World country like Indonesia, conserving and rehabilitating the Orangutans is yet just another priority that they must effectively juggle with. With this book she continues to encourage both them and us to care.

Lifestory of an American woman dedicated to Orang Oetans
By Erik Scheffers
Unlike the two other primate researchers Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey I had never heard of Galdikas when I found this book a few days ago in the bookshop. Galdikas describes in this book more than 20 years of her life with the Orang Oetans in a nature reserve in Kalimantan, Indonesia. The story is an very enyoable read and tells a lot about the way Orang Oetans live. Instead of viewing all Orang Oetans as similar she describes a lot of different individuals. She's not only studying the Orang Oetans but also tries to free captivated Orang Oetans and tries to relocate them in the reserve. The story is very well written and also very well translated in Dutch. I'm looking forward to read the books by Fossey and Goodall.

Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution, by John Paul Stevens

For the first time ever, a retired Supreme Court Justice offers a manifesto on how the Constitution needs to change.

By the time of his retirement in June 2010, John Paul Stevens had become the second longest serving Justice in the history of the Supreme Court. Now he draws upon his more than three decades on the Court, during which he was involved with many of the defining decisions of the modern era, to offer a book like none other. SIX AMENDMENTS is an absolutely unprecedented call to arms, detailing six specific ways in which the Constitution should be amended in order to protect our democracy and the safety and wellbeing of American citizens.

Written with the same precision and elegance that made Stevens's own Court opinions legendary for their clarity as well as logic, SIX AMENDMENTS is a remarkable work, both because of its unprecedented nature and, in an age of partisan ferocity, its inarguable common sense.

Review
PRAISE FOR THE FIVE CHIEFS:

"Informative and very appealing....It's classic justice Stevens: understated and generous to those he differs with, but absolutely clear on where he believes justice lies."
--- Adam Cohen, Time

"Laced with observations on the court's architecture, traditions and even its seating arrangements, it is the collected ruminations of a man who has served his country in war and peace, across the decades... His memoir is as gracious as its author and a reminder that Stevens is more than a longtime member of the nation's highest court. He is a national treasure."
--- Jim Newton, Los Angeles Times

"An important addition to American history....At its core, the book is not just another memoir from yet another judge. It marks instead the end of an era on the Supreme Court and in the broader swath of American law and politics."
--- Andrew Cohen, The Atlantic

"Coming from the last of a dying breed of jurists who genuinely believe you can learn something from everyone if you just listen hard enough, it is a lesson in how, at the Supreme Court, civility and cordiality matter more, even, than doctrine."
--- Dahlia Lithwick, Washington Post

Short and easy to read, but ultimately unsatisfying
By William Springer
In the wake of the unprecedented level of gerrymandering that followed the 2010 elections, as well as the Supreme Court's gutting of the Voting Rights Act and campaign finance laws, it has become very clear that a constitutional amendment may be required in order to preserve the right to vote in this country. While I have not read Stevens' previous book, I've heard good things about his writing, so I've been looking forward to reading his latest offering. It was announced early on that he would take on the second amendment, which guaranteed that the book would be controversial, but I was more interested in the other five amendments he intended to offer. Although Stevens spent nearly 35 years on the high court, he seems to feel that it has taken on excessive power, and here he advocates returning power to the people's representatives in Congress.

After a quick review of the successful amendments thus far, Stevens proceeds to a discussion of the Supremacy Clause and whether the federal government can compel state officials to enforce federal law, given that the language specifically calls out judges ("and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby"); he recommends adding the words "and other public officials", with the reasoning that often state officials are in the best position to enforce federal law. Stevens clearly considers this to be a clarification rather than a change, but one which would overturn past rulings of the court.

The second chapter moves on to what I would consider one of the greatest threats to democracy: political gerrymandering. While few people have much good to say about gerrymandering (indeed, Stephens opens with a quote from Antonin Scalia describing severe partisan gerrymanders as incompatible with democratic principles), thus far the courts have declined to step in other than to prevent racial gerrymanders. Oddly enough, Stevens weakens the impact of his argument by using older examples of gerrymandering that left the minority party with fewer seats than they could reasonably expect have gotten based on their share of the vote, while ignoring the more egregious gerrymandering that happened after the 2010 elections and in some cases allowed the Republican party to capture a supermajority of seats in 2012 while getting a minority of the vote. He argues, and I would agree, that having compact districts is more important than making sure each one has exactly the same number of people (while the numbers should be approximately equal, I would argue that a 1% difference in size does far less damage than the....interesting...shapes of today's congressional districts).

In chapter three, we move on to campaign finance. Congress has always tried to impose limits on political spending in order to avoid corruption. Most recently, the debate has been over whether Congress can limit the aggregate amount that an individual can donate to political campaigns and whether non-human entities (such as corporations and unions) can spend without restriction. So far the most interesting option I've seen (although one not mentioned in this book) is to expand the current prohibition on election spending by people who are not US citizens to say that money spent to promote or oppose a candidate may only come from people who could legally vote for or against that candidate. Of course, any one restriction we put into place may be gamed; Stevens suggests an amendment simply stating that Congress and the states may impose reasonable limits on how much candidates and their supporters may spend in election campaigns. Reasonable, of course, would be defined by the appropriate lawmakers.

Moving on, chapter four covers a somewhat more obscure topic: sovereign immunity. Under common law, the king could not be sued without his consent, and the states have assumed this power to themselves (and solidified it with the 11th amendment, which prohibits federal courts from ruling on suits brought against a state by citizens of another state (or another country). More recently (although this isn't covered in the chapter, and the court has never given it much credence) we've seen claims that states can invalidate federal law under the 10th amendment. The proposed amendment for this chapter clarifies that a state and its agencies and officers are subject to the Constitution and to acts of Congress.

In chapter five, we consider the death penalty. Does it fall under the prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment? Should it be decided at the federal level, rather than state by state? Stevens recommends adding the words "such as the death penalty" to the prohibition in the 8th amendment. I found this to be the weakest chapter in that nothing herein will convince anyone not already opposed to the death penalty that a problem exists.

Chapter six, on gun control, is disappointingly short. As expected, Stevens covers the history of judicial rulings on the second amendment, through the 5-4 votes in 2008 and 2010 (District of Columbia v Heller and McDonald v Chicago, respectively) that expanded the right to keep a handgun and limited the right of the government to outlaw handguns. The topic guaranteed that this would be the most controversial chapter in the book, and I had hoped Stevens would make use of that attention by giving an in-depth treatment of how the second amendment has been interpreted throughout the history of the country, but instead the coverage of the historical record is minimal. The purpose of this chapter is primarily to argue that Congress, not the courts, should be charged with deciding on the proper regulation of guns.

As to my rating, I start out by giving the book four stars for entertainment and education. It's very easy to read, despite what can be somewhat technical subject matter. However, I deduct a star because the book fails on several counts. Primarily, this is intended as a persuasive book, but while Stevens adequately (if only just) demonstrates the existence of each problem, he devotes no space to convincing the reader that his proposed amendment is the optimal way to deal with that problem. In fact, not enough space is devoted to the book in general; it weighs in at only 168 pages, not particularly lengthy given the subject matter, and only 2/3 of that is the actual book, the remainder being taken up by illustrations, the text of the Constitution, etc. Overall, the book is a disappointment, not only because it fails to accomplish its goal of convincing the reader to support Steven's preferred solutions to the various problems mentioned, but because of the wasted opportunity that a book by a man in his position had to more fully inform the public.

Justice Stevens' Constitutional Correctives
By Ronald H. Clark
It is spring and proposed constitutional amendments are in the air. One thoughtful group has come from conservative commentator Mark Levin in his interesting "The Liberty Amendments." Now retired Justice John Paul Stevens has offered his own menu of six amendments in this volume. As regards the general reader, some chapters will interest many; other chapters deal with areas that may be overwhelmingly technical or simply less interesting. In any regard, Justice Stevens offers some fresh ideas and proposals that bear serious consideration. The book follows a uniform methodology: Justice Stevens first outlines a problem he sees in the present constitutional structure and then articulates how he would amend the document to correct that problem. I think this approach works well and is easy to follow.

After a prologue which is a quick run through the present lineup of constitutional amendments, Stevens in the initial chapter turns to the "anti-commandeering rule." The supremacy clause of the Constitution (Art. VI, Cl. 2) imposed a duty on state judges to implement and apply federal law as superior to state law. Recently, the issue has arisen whether state officials in addition to judges can be required to implement federal law. The background-checking provisions of gun-control legislation is a prime example. Recent Supreme Courts have imposed an area of state immunity from federal statutes, arguing that the supremacy clause only specifies judges are bound by it. Justice Stevens thinks this approach is inappropriate and would modify the clause to include all "public officials." The only problem with this chapter is that it throws a lot of case law at the reader, since many of the problems Stevens sees are the result of Supreme Court decisions.

Stevens next discusses what appears to be a very major concern of his: political gerrymandering. Unlike racial gerrymandering which has been dead for a generation or two, the political variety continues to function. While electoral districts may be roughly equal in size, they still can be drawn to favor one party or another. Among other problems this can lead to safe districts returning incumbents election after election. For Stevens, this results in a lack of compromise as reflected in the government shutdown of October 2013. Stevens' proposed amendment language (Congressional and state legislative districts shall be "compact and composed of contiguous territory") seems somewhat plastic and fluid such that application of this standard would prove quite difficult.

In the third chapter, Stevens tackles a very major issue: campaign finance. His historical discussion is designed to educate the reader as a foundation for the discussion to follow. I have always found this area of the law to be taxing and confusing, and in order to explain it Stevens must throw a lot of arcane distinctions and case law at the reader. While this is done well, it is still a difficult chapter to absorb. The solution to the money-in-elections issue should be to place "reasonable limits" on spending in order to protect democratic self-government. But here again the proposed test of "reasonable limits" seems very wide open to me.

The remain chapters discuss several important issues, including sovereign immunity and the death penalty (with its frightful risk of mistake). The final chapter deals with gun control, another hot topic. I was expecting a more elaborate discussion of this issue, given Stevens' masterful dissenting opinion in the D.C. Supreme Court holding in the Heller case. Here he is somewhat concise and reasserts his position that the second amendment pertains to weapons held "when serving in the militia." The political realities of this issue would, I assume, foreclose such an amendment from seeing the light of day. On the positive side, Stevens' does point out that the Heller holding is less constrictive than the media has made it out to be.

The book runs some 134 pages, and includes some helpful illustrations, particularly colorful exhibits used in some of the political gerrymandering litigation. There are a few footnotes, but for the most part they refer to Supreme Court cases and not secondary material. An appendix containing the entire Constitutional is included, as an index. I think the main strength of the book is to highlight some important issues that Justice Stevens' feels need to be addressed by constitutional amendment. While his proposed amendments are not perfect, they are probably the best proposals we are going to get on these six issues.

If Only These Could Be Easily Accomplished!
By Loyd Eskildson
Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens wants to change the Constitution with six amendments to reduce gun violence, limit political campaign spending, outlaw the death penalty, limit states' independence, and make Congress less combative and ideological.

Here are the four most significant:

1)Gerrymandering: Congressional districts, as well as those at the state level, shall be compact and composed of contiguous territory.

2)Campaign Finance: Congress, not any state, will be not prohibited from imposing reasonable limits on the amount of money that candidates for public office, or their supporters, may spend in election campaigns.

3)Death Penalty: The death penalty shall not be inflicted.

4)The Second Amendment: 'A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms when serving in the Militia shall not be infringed.

What he doesn't propose amending, however, is the difficulty in amending the Constitution - very likely a fatal oversight. It takes two-thirds of both houses of Congress or state legislatures to propose an amendment and three-fourths of the legislatures to approve it. In today's environment it's almost impossible to even get a simple majority of both houses of Congress.

Another fun adventure with the traveling merchant and wise wolf.
By Steven Archer
Great addition to the series! Not as long as the other volumes, but it matters very little for this story. It picks up right where volume 10 left off. The story has great pacing and the dialogue between the companions is exceptional as always. There truly wasn't a moment that I wasn't enamored by the dialogue between Holo and Lawrence. And which I'm happy to say the book was absolutely flooded with their banter to the point where I think that a permanent grin has made its home on my face. I'm going to have to re-read a few more times to be sure I didn't miss out on any clues or hidden meanings, because the author sure seems to like to do that kind of thing. Like the rest of the series, an absolute must read.

We Were Kings (The Boston Saga), by Thomas O'Malley, Douglas Graham Purdy

In 1950's Boston, the Irish Republican Army is running guns and killing witnesses. Cal and Dante are committed to stopping them.
When a body is discovered at the Charlestown locks--tarred, feathered and shot to death--it appears to be a gangland killing, and is almost immediately dismissed. However, Cal O'Brien's cousin, Boston PD detective Owen Lackey, recognizes the murder style as the typical retribution for IRA informers. Combined with a tip-off about a boat coming into Boston weighed down with stolen guns and ammunition, the body in the locks hints that much more may be at stake than a one-off hit.
Serpents in the Cold introduced us to Cal and Dante, whose previous investigation brought them to the highest ranks of Boston's political elite. This time, Cal and Dante descend into the city's shadowy underbelly--a world of packed dance halls, Irish wakes, and funeral parlors. There they discover a terrorist plot that will shake the city to its core and bring them head-to-head not only with Cal's past, but with the IRA Army Council itself.

Review
"This brilliant second entry in the Boston Saga sizzles . . . This stunning narrative will enrapture fans of James Crumley and the astonishingly deep and dark Sara Gran."―Booklist (starred review)

"The authors deliver noir done well in dark-city descriptions and a cast of damaged characters."―Kirkus Reviews

PRAISE FOR SERPENTS IN THE COLD:
"In the best noir tradition, these co-authors shine a smoky light on lives often lived in the shadows."―Carol Iaciofano, WBUR

"Like Sara Gran's Dope, Serpents in the Cold lovingly revisits the hardboiled noir. From the dives of Dorchester to the Locke-Ober Café, John Garfield and Richard Widmark would feel right at home in O'Malley and Purdy's bygone, fallen Boston."―Stewart O'Nan, author of West of Sunset

"Serpents in the Cold is a great addition to the canon of gritty Boston street fiction, a no-punches-pulled look at a bygone era. Noir is how we like our crime, and "no-'R'" is how we pronounce it."―Chuck Hogan, author of The Town

Drenched in sweat and blood
By SAMUEL PETERSON
Drenched in sweat and blood, We Were Kings is a really solid sophomore effort from O'Malley & Purdy. The introduction of Bobby Myles is one of the most beautiful and gut-wrenching chapters I've ever read, and it sets a gritty tone for the unapologetically cruel ride to come.
Excellent work, lads! Hope to see more from you soon.

History is a Nightmare....
By Sredni Vashtar
Serpents in the Cold is a grand piece of work and We Were Kings is a more than worthy sequel. The story is very good, but what makes these books superb is the character development and the quality of the writing. The Boston Saga is much more than a crime series. It is an unforgettable recreation of a place and a time.

We Were Kings is a fantastic book. The authors did their homework
By RKeef
I received this book from the publisher for my honest review. That being said...
We Were Kings is a fantastic book. The authors did their homework. For someone like myself that grew up in MA. it's like walking back in time. The locations the streets the town and even the vocabulary are spot on. The story is engrossing and the layers of character development is superb. If you grew up in The Town you'll love this book. Even if you didn't you'll love this book. No one's perfect, everyone has a story and every character in this book has a story. All the individual character back stories make for a great book. While reading I felt as if I was part of the story. Maybe that's romanticing on my part, I'm more inclined to think the authors did one check of a job.
