There isn't a Black Butler volume I haven't like yet. Keep them coming Toboso! Yana Toboso gives us another great book finishing the story of the Emerald witch and werewolves ready to lead us into another with the Undertaker, who seems to have some evil scheme up his sleeve. Once a jovial reaper now shows the group his odd behavior with even tears from some distance memory. The Emerald witch, Sieglinde Sullivan, butler recovers from his serious injuries and they all head back to England where Sullivan is to meet with Queen Victoria for tea.

I have read this amazing manga since the first book and I'm never let down with a boring book. I just love Sebastian, Ciel's butler.

The Best Children's Book Ever!
By A Customer
This was my favorite book when I was little, and I have read the entire book many times. It collects some of the best short stories, nursery rhymes, and fables in children's literature into one fabulous book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves stories, but children especially will be pleased with the content and the excellent illustrations. This is a book that everyone should have in their collection. You won't regret it!

The best Children's Book I've Ever Owned
By Theresa Geddes
This book is by far the best children's book I've ever owned. My son received it as a gift at his birth. We spent many happy moments reading the stories and poetry in this book. He can still recite the favorites! He is now in college, but the book is timeless. It has everything from funny poetry to short stories. It has all the classics in just one place. We always found something to suit the mood! If your kids love to hear stories from you this is a great option. My daughter also enjoyed this book growing up. She delighted in the "Stupids Step Out" and "Mrs. Simpkins Bathtub." Curious George was another favorite. The list could go on and on. I will never part with this book.

Classics last forever
By D. ponasik
I bought this three volume book for my daughter 30 years ago and now she is sharing it with her children. All the classic stories and fairy tales that children love are here and what is really wonderful is that the original illustrations are included. We are just starting now on Volume 3 (redux) and I fully expect these books to be passed down to the next generation. They are definitely a good investment.

Amazon.com Review
The faces that Kevyn Aucoin has made are stellar and luminous: Cher, Tina Turner, Vanessa Williams, and Julia Roberts are but a few of the stars in Aucoin's galaxy of clientele. More than making do, making up is the art of achieving your own special look, and Aucoin insists that there are no hard and fast rules--except for the obvious ones, such as "Don't put lipstick in your eye."

The first section offers, in his own words, Aucoin's favorite ideas, tricks, and techniques for enhancing, defining, and altering facial features with makeup. You'll learn how to care for your skin, what foundation to use with your skin type, and transformational magic for that central player in the drama of beauty: eyes. Through his gallery of noncelebrity before-and-afters, Aucoin shows clearly how to use his fundamentals to achieve dozens of different looks.

The gorgeous final chapter reads like a list of exotic characters in a play--the Vamp, the Siren, the Diva.... In fact, such celebrities as Isabella Rosselini, Demi Moore, and Nicole Kidman pose as these dramatic, splendidly made-up characters. These sumptuous photographs are accompanied by full-page illustrations listing the "ingredients" required to create these looks as well as simple directions for achieving them. The introduction by the author, at once amusing and endearing ("...trying to conceal the fact that I was a gay, effeminate, hyperactive, adopted child with a serious lisp in southern Louisiana would have been like trying to hide Dolly Parton in a string bikini!"), and Aucoin's commentary throughout, makes Making Faces a unique reference book--beautiful, informative, and personal.

About the Author
Kevyn Aucoin's work was seen by millions in fashion shows, music videos, and on the covers of virtually every major magazine. He appeared on countless television shows and was the author of three bestselling books, "The Art of Makeup, Making Faces, and "Face Forward. Kerry Diamond is the beauty director at "Harper's Bazaar and was the beauty editor at "Women's Wear Daily for several years. She lives in New York City. Eric Sakas was Kevyn's confidante and business partner and today runs Kevyn Aucoin Beauty.

It's a MUST HAVE for anyone who loves the art of makeup!
By A Customer
I bought this book skeptically after hearing from a friend how helpful it was in describing techniques. The georgeous photos would have sold it for me anyhow, but Aucoin's 'Making Faces' actually taught me how to do makeup. I've always done the same thing...which was basically go natural or play with makeup till I looked like a clown then scrub it all off. It's a simple approach that is easily accessible. The book makes doing eyebrow shaping look easy...and it not only looks easy- by following a few steps it turns out it IS easy. If you want to learn the basics- buy this book. If you want to do a home makeover- go glamorous, sensual, then fun later on - buy this book. If you want to tune your look a bit- get it! I guess I don't have to go on, but if you are like me and need a bit of instruction and cant afford a makeup artist to be at your beckon call- buy this book. At least borrow it from a friend. It's one of the books you'll consistently turn to for tips and tricks. It's an excellent resource and a whole lot of fun. The photos and styles cover all ages, from young and cute teenage to mature sophisticated and sexy women to a really hot guy in drag (double take is an understatement). Aucoin not only uses "Stars" but also 'real' people (meaning their looks aren't a direct part of their job) in showing the techniques and how they cause such transformations.

Not just a makeup tip recipe book, ITS A GLAMOUR BIBLE!!!
By spooky2b@yahoo.com
Kevin Acoin's book Making Faces is exquisite! As a makeup artist familiar with Kevin's work, I thought this book was going to be just a book filled with trade secrets and inside tips.Once I opened to the 3rd or 4th page, I realised how wrong I was.Not only did I find information that was useful beyond anything I learned in Beauty school, it was full of probably the most beautiful collection of photographs I have ever seen.It really takes a true genious to transform so many gorgeous women into other gorgeous women who look nothing like them.I really liked how he chose to use traditional movie roles as inspiration for some of the pictures.I think this allows the reader to recreate the role of the inginue or heroine!! There is also a really wonderful lesson on facial bone structure that really helps to understand how contouring and highlighting certain areas is really important to bring out a womans (or in a few cases..a mans)features.I photocopied it and stuck it to my bathroom mirror as a guide for applying eyeshadow. The only thing that I didnt like about the book is that he didn't mention the products used. Some women will find it a little difficult to find liquid eyeshadow and gold fleck dust!! I think had he given the brand names it would be a lot easier to find the products. This book is definitely a must for any makeup artist, cosmetic consumer, and any woman who wants to feel beautiful!

Makeup bible, ultimate how-to--BEST book on this topic!
By Hedera Femme
Makeup bible, ultimate how-to, this book remains the Best book I have seen on the subject of working with color, proportion, shading, and highlighting to create a beautiful, symmetrical, gorgeous face. It is thorough and leaves no question unanswered.

The book begins with the basics: anatomy of the face, foundational ingredients (moisturizer, simple tools, foundation types, powders, concealers) and moves on to techniques. There is an Amazing diagram on shading and highlighting on pg 24 that shows an exaggerated version of what goes on beneath the makeup to create the illusion of symmetry and highlight (or fake) high cheekbones, a lovely chinline, and beautiful eyes. It also discusses brows, eyes, lashes, lips, and then moves onto overall styles and looks. The way he explains with the text and shows with a combination of drawings and pictures makes it clear for anyone, whether a professional or beginner. Excellent resource!

The looks themselves are extremely varied from subtle, minimal, and fresh, to smoky, sexy, and very dramatic. He begins with simple ideas on everyday people, but finishes off with celebrities looking like you have never seen them--you seriously have to find their names to figure out who they are, they look so different. These are examples of what different makeup can do, and for the theatre and fashion folks out there, this section provides you with so much inspiration and ideas--it is priceless!

There is something here for every person and every occasion, so even those who don't like looking overly made up can look great. His pictures of friends, family, and of course, celebrities give this book both warmth and glamour, and his clear way of breaking down various techniques make this the most accessible, user-friendly, useful book I have read on this topic. I recommend it to anyone at all.

* "Brown's middle-grade debut, an uplifting story about an unexpected visitor whose arrival disrupts the animal inhabitants of a rocky island, has a contemporary twist...Brown wisely eschews a happy ending in favor of an open-ended one that supports the tone of a story that's simultaneously unsentimental and saturated with feeling."―Publishers Weekly, starred review

Charlotte's Web meets The Iron Giant
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: When a ship carrying 500 robots sinks in a hurricane, only one of the robots survives. She is ROZZUM Unit 7134, better known as Roz, and she washes up on an island inhabited only by animals. As she explores the island to learn more about her new home, the animals fear they are being invaded by a monster. Gradually, they learn that she likes to help them, and they, in turn, help her. When she adopts an orphaned gosling and builds a nest for herself and her new son, she becomes a full-fledged member of the community. Her building and fire-making abilities save the animals during an unusually frigid winter. Roz’s happy world is shattered, though, when her robot past catches up with her. War comes to the island as the animals seek to protect her. Can this robot really be “wild”, or must she be true to her automaton nature? 288 pages; grades 3-7.

Pros: Charlotte’s Web meets The Iron Giant in this debut novel from illustrator Peter Brown. The story is touching without being sappy or emotional, and thought-provoking without being preachy. Brown’s own illustrations are generously inserted throughout the text. If I were on the Newbery committee, this would be going to the top of my list.

Cons: The ending is a little dark. Until the last few chapters, I thought this would be a perfect read-aloud for grades 2 and up. Now I would say grade 3 or even 4 would be the youngest. Read it first if you’re not sure.

Loved the book
By Amazon Customer
Review from 10-year old boy: I loved the book. Robots are awesome. Same thing with the wilderness. If you combine them together, you get this book. This book is so good it's hard to put down. I read for two hours and 30 minutes straight and could've kept going. That's a new record for me. With the books I used to read, I could only read for an hour. One of the other reasons I like this book is because none of the main characters die. Up until I finished the book, I knew it was a best seller. My dad really liked the book too.

Almost there...
By E. Rose
I read this book after my daughter (age 11) finished it. I'm an elementary school librarian so I read a lot of children's literature and I'm familiar with Brown's picture books which are popular among my younger students.

Like many of the other reviewers here, I agree that the first 3/4 of the book was strong. Accessible to all age groups, written with depth but simplicity. The reader moves through the wild landscape and grows with Roz and her adopted forest kin. There are powerful messages about potential, family and community.

Then it tanks. Toward the climax-to-end, as an adult reader, I felt that old disappointment: ok, beauty accomplished, here's where we sell the movie rights and start a series. (Why sell one book when you can sell three?)

The action/battle scene was unnecessary. The dip into futuristic dystopia ripped me (and my daughter) right out of the story. It didn't fit.

My daughter on The Wild Robot:
It was a beautiful book and the artwork was great. But in a story like this, the violence at the end doesn't work. Even if Roz had to be taken away, it should have been quietly sad, the way it is in The Little Prince. Or the Moon Princess, when her people come to take her back.

All in all, it is a book I will buy for my school's library because it's a good read. It had potential to be a classic, however, and simply fell short.

a lovely collection of fairy tales
By cgs
I love this book of fairy tales! I was looking specifically for a copy of Virginia Haviland's "Favorite Fairy Tales Told in Czechoslovakia," but even used that title with its 5 stories is priced at $30!! Too much for me for a used paperback. But then I found this compendium, which contains 2 of the stories from the czech fairy tale book, and many many more from other countries as well. Over 30 tales are included in this book. My daughters and I love her tellings, and we are checking and rechecking them out from the library all the time. Having this book on our shelf at home will be wonderful.

The book includes these tales:
The wood fairy -- The twelve months -- Ee-aw! Ee-aw! -- The wonderful pot -- Jack and the beanstalk -- Tom Thumb -- Dick Whittington and his cat -- Puss in boots -- The sleeping beauty in the wood -- The twelve dancing princesses -- Rumpelstiltskin -- Hansel and Gretel -- The Bremen Town musicians -- Constantes and the dragon -- The fairy wife -- The blind man, the deaf man, and the donkey -- The valiant chattee-maker -- The bee, the harp, the mouse, and the bum-clock -- Billy Beg and the bull -- Cenerentola -- Bastianelo -- The tongue-cut sparrow -- The white hare and the crocodiles -- The jolly tailor who became king -- Snegourka, the snow maiden -- The flying ship -- The page boy and the silver goblet -- The Brownie o' Ferne-Den -- Four brothers who were both wise and foolish -- Juan Cigarron -- The old woman and the tramp -- Lars, my lad!

The Dark Side of Camelot, by Seymour M. Hersh

With its meticulously documented and compulsively readable portrait of JFK as a man whose reckless personal behavior imperiled his presidency, this monumental work of investigative journalism reveals the Kennedy White House as never before. The book argues that President Kennedy's private life and personal obsessions -- his character -- affected the affairs of the U.S. and its foreign policy far more than has ever been known.

Amazon.com Review
If the Kennedys are America's royal family, then John F. Kennedy was the nation's crown prince. Magnetic, handsome, and charismatic, his perfectly coifed image overshadowed the successes and failures of his presidency, and his assassination cemented his near-mythological status in American culture and politics. Struck down in his prime, he represented the best and the brightest of America's future, and when he died, part of the nation's promise and innocence went with him. That, at least, is the public version of the story.

The private version, according to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour M. Hersh, is quite different. His meticulous investigation of Kennedy has revealed a wealth of indiscretions and malfeasance, ranging from frequent liaisons with prostitutes and mistresses to the attempted assassination of Fidel Castro to involvement in organized crime. Though scandals in the White House are nothing new, Hersh maintains that Kennedy's activities went beyond minor abuses of power and personal indulgences: they threatened the security of the nation--particularly in the realm of foreign policy--and the integrity of the office. Hersh believes it was only a matter of time before Kennedy's dealings were exposed, and only his popularity and charm, compounded by his premature death, spared such an investigation for so long. Exposure was further stalled by Bobby Kennedy's involvement in nefarious dealings, enabling him to bury any investigation of his brother and--by extension--himself.

Based on interviews with former Kennedy administration officials, former Secret Service agents, and hundreds of Kennedy's personal friends and associates, The Dark Side of Camelot rewrites the history of John F. Kennedy and his presidency.

Review
The big casualty in the Marilyn-papers fiasco is the five years of hard work Hersh put into his book. One may quarrel with his judgments but the man is a great investigative reporter, no lie, and when he says somebody told him something he makes it easy for doubters to check it out. Nothing in The Dark Side of Camelot gives off even a whiff of the dead-fish aroma of the trust fund from Marilyn's Mom, but Kennedy loyalists, joined by others who just don't want to know, are using Hersh's terrible misstep to dismiss what he has dug up as trifling gossip and unsupported heresay. -- The New York Times Book Review, Thomas Powers

This warts-and-more-warts bio is so determined to kill off the Kennedy mystique it should be subtitled The Second JFK Assassination.... Hersh packs so much sleaze and scandal between the covers, he makes Kitty Kelley look like a pussycat. Much of it is old news, of course, even if Hersh does document the allegations more assiduously than ever before. -- Entertainment Weekly

About the Author
Seymour Hersch is one of America's premier investigative reporters. In 1969 he wrote the first account of the My Lai massacre in South Vietnam. In the 1970s he worked at the New York Times in Washington and New York. He has won more than a dozen major journalism prizes, including the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting and four George Polk Awards.

The Dark Side of JFK revealed with all its warts.
By Roger J. Buffington
First, the disclaimer: although I am a conservative, I like and admire much of what JFK did as president, and I admire the man. Few readers will begin reading this book without a pre-existing opinion of Kennedy. That is/was mine.

Hersh does a workmanlike job illustrating the apparently undeniable fact that Kennedy had medical problems, integrity issues, and personal problems that the country would probably not tolerate in a president today. This book appears to be well-researched and well-documented. It does not present a flattering portrayal of Kennedy and it does not intend to.

First, the infidelity. Hersh goes into depressing detail as to his theme that JFK's marriage was a sham. According to Hersh, JFK never missed an opportunity to philander whenever Jackie Kennedy was away, and sometimes when she wasn't away. Much of JFK's inner circle conspired with him in this regards (according to Hersh) to a degree that is hard to imagine. Hersh speculates that part of Kennedy's abnormal libedo was induced by various drugs he took for his Addison's condition. Hersh develops this theme further in his discussion of the Cuban Missile Crisis and speculates that the cocktail of steroids and other drugs that Kennedy evidently needed to get through the day affected his judgment and his willingness to take risks. This in turn may have caused him to be more prone to the kind of brinksmanship that Hersh claims characterized Kennedy's handling of the Missile Crisis.

Personally I'm not so sure. Despite the fact that the US had an overwhelming nuclear and overall military superiority over Soviets in 1962, Kennedy did not bomb the missiles out but instead negotiated. Here I felt Hersh was unfair to Kennedy. The record seems clear that Kennedy was acutely aware that the world was on the brink of a nuclear confrontation and he was determined to avoid a holocaust while forcing the removal of the missiles. These things he did, to his very great credit. Compare Kennedy's competence with the kind of feckless European diplomacy that led the world into two World Wars. Americans can be proud of Kennedy's handling of this crisis and I disagree with Hersh in this context.

On the other hand, it seems clear that Kennedy's marriage was a sham and his image of youthful vigor was even more of a sham. Hersh is convincing that Kennedy could not get through the day without a battery of probably illegal and unhealthy drugs. Kennedy was suffering from Addison's disease, which is a very serious condition, and the man had many other health issues, including the famous back problem, which put him in constant pain.

Personally I found this book convincing as regards the infidelity, drug, and health claims that it made about Kennedy. Hersh is on thinner ice when he theorizes that these issues caused Kennedy to endanger the country. While this book or one like it is probably needed to balance the fluff pieces about Kennedy (and all the Kennedys) that abound, it is not itself a balanced analysis of JFK. To its credit, the book more or less admits this, in its title if nowhere else.

Not quite Camelot after all
By ilprofessore
As Hersh sets out to demonstrate in the finest tradition of investigative journalism, JFK may have been one of the most charming and intelligent men ever to hold high office, but his record as a politician and husband does not merit the mythical status some people have awarded him. He inherited the war in Vietnam and the plan for the Cuban invasion from previous administrations and certainly could have stopped both had any real understanding of foreign affairs. As the Kennedy clan had long been beholden to the mafia for the political favors, it was sheer madness to have permitted his brother to go down that perilous path of punishing those who has made JFK's career possible. The sins of the man here far out weigh the good he did or attempted to do. Hersh documents it all.

Kennedy was a head Case
By Perseus
Arrived on time and in very good condition. Nice to see authors taking a dispassionate look at Kennedy - FINALLY!!!!! It's about time. Hersh's book is a timely antidote to all the "Saint Kennedy" books that have swamped and brainwashed us for over 50 years. Enough is enough. Everyone had better just cowboy up and face reality: Kennedy was not only a bad President; in point of fact, he was dangerously incompetent. His legacy is that of a man-child in the highest office in the land from an election his father stole for him. An election in which he trashed his predecessor, the great Dwight Eisenhower, now considered one of our very best President in order to pander for votes. Hersh's book is one of many now debunking the idiotic "Kennedy-Camelot" Bovine Excrement. Thank you Seymour.

Mythology, by Edith Hamilton

Since its original publication by Little, Brown and Company in 1942, Edith Hamilton's Mythology has sold millions of copies throughout the world and established itself as a perennial bestseller in its various available formats: hardcover, trade paperback, mass market paperback, and e-book. Mythology succeeds like no other book in bringing to life for the modern reader the Greek, Roman, and Norse myths and legends that are the keystone of Western culture - the stories of gods and heroes that have inspired human creativity from antiquity to the present.

Amazon.com Review
Edith Hamilton loved the ancient Western myths with a passion--and this classic compendium is her tribute. "The tales of Greek mythology do not throw any clear light upon what early mankind was like," Hamilton explains in her introduction. "They do throw an abundance of light upon what early Greeks were like--a matter, it would seem, of more importance to us, who are their descendents intellectually, artistically, and politically. Nothing we learn about them is alien to ourselves." Fans of Greek mythology will find all the great stories and characters here--Perseus, Hercules, and Odysseus--each discussed in generous detail by the voice of an impressively knowledgeable and engaging (with occasional lapses) narrator. This is also an excellent primer for middle- and high-school students who are studying ancient Greek and Roman culture and literature. --Gail Hudson

Review
"Edith Hamilton retells the Greek, Roman, and Norse myths with a sure taste and scholarship that help to restore their quality as perennial and refreshing fables about human nature, including our own." "The New Yorker""

"No one in modern times has shown us more vividly than Edith Hamilton 'the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome.' Filtering the golden essence from the mass of classical literature, she proved how applicable to our daily lives are the humor and wisdom of more than 2,000 years ago." "New York Times""

From the Back Cover
MONSTERS, MORTALS, GODS, AND WARRIORS

For over fifty years readers have chosen this book above all others to discover the thrilling, enchanting, and fascinating world of Western mythology. From Odysseus's adventure-filled journey to the Norse god Odin's effort to postpone the final day of doom, Edith Hamilton's classic collection not only retells these stories with brilliant clarity but shows us how the ancients saw their own place in the world and how their themes echo in our consciousness today. An essential part of every home library, MYTHOLOGY is the definitive volume for anyone who wants to know the key dramas, the primary characters, the triumphs, failures, fears, and hopes first narrated thousands of years ago -- and still spellbinding to this day.

A good book for entertainment or education
By Stosh D. Walsh
Hamilton's mythology deserves its place with Bulfinch's mythology as one of the primary anthologies of classical mythology. Although the book covers Greek/Roman myths thoroughly, the Norse myths are touched upon only briefly, which is why I have given the book four stars rather than five. Nonetheless, the quality of the book is excellent, and it is useful as a volume to be read for entertainment, and as a classroom primer (I myself have taught a Mythology class using it as the primary textbook). Hamilton's retellings are engaging, and her scholasticism is evident throughout--a small example is her use of the less popular Roman names for the primary gods (Jupiter, Juno, Mars, etc.) when they are found in myths of Roman origin. Hamilton also includes information at the beginning of most chapters about the source of the myth and its author, which is very helpful. She synthesizes the longer myths, such as the Trojan War (found in the Iliad) and the quest for the golden fleece in such a way as to highlight their major events and give the reader a flavor of their content. Overall, I have not encountered a better survey of classical mythology in one volume. Incidentally, if the reader desires more information on the Norse Myths, I recommend Kevin Crossley-Holland's Norse Myths, which is also an excellent volume.

All You'll Likely Need
By A.Trendl HungarianBookstore.com
"Mythology" covers all the major and most minor Greek, Norse and Roman gods, goddesses, stories and locales. Edith Hamilton makes no pretenses that this is all there is to say on mythology, but she gives a reader a fine start.

Hamilton puts them into sensible structures so beginners can learn in a context which are easy to understand. She provides major section titles helping readers get straight to the required story, like "Stories of Love and Adventure" You'll find "Cupid and Psyche" as a chapter.

Chapters are named mostly by story like, "The Trojan War."

She quotes from the sources, so the reader knows how it is she got her information.

Character-driven in format, readers can look up a name, find the subtitle with that name, and read why that character matters. She writes narratively, sounding a little like "Cliff's Notes." This is a good thing, because the poetry from which these myths are drawn can be overwhelming.

Nicely organized is the geneological table section. It looks like a family tree, in a English royalty kind of way.

As a writer, I use it for a quick reference guide. I usually only need a few nuggets of information, and she gives me plenty. I first acquired it high school, using it to get out of those tough jams when I did not understand books like "The Odyssey," by Homer.

More than mere reference, "Mythology" is good reading for no other purpose than serendipitous curiosity.

I fully recommend it.

Timeless Tales of the Gods and Heroes of Classical Mythology
By Lawrance Bernabo
Edith Hamilton's "Mythology" tell the "Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes" of classical mythology and this volume, first written in 1942, is now a timeless classic itself. This was the first book of mythology that I ever read and it is still the best. When Hamilton retells the love story of Cupid and Psyche or the tragedy of Agamemnon and his children, she does so with a full sense of what it meant when first told by Apuleius or Aeschylus. These are not children's tales, but the heroic legends and religious beliefs of the ancient Greeks. Furthermore, the illustrations by Steele Savage have the elegance of wood block prints, which, for all I know, is exactly what they are. I appreciate Hamilton's choice to avoid relying on Ovid, for while the "Metamorphoses" is the most comprehensive ancient text dealing with the classical myths, Ovid is an unbeliever. For Hamilton the writings of Homer, Hesiod and Pindar are more abbreviated in terms of providing details for the myths, but at least they take the tales seriously.
Another strength of the book is how she organizes the myths in her seven parts: (1) Covers the complete pantheon of deities, including the lesser gods of Olympus and Earth and the later Roman additions, as well as the earliest heroes. (2) Retells the various tales of love, between mortals and the gods or each other, along with the Quest for the Golden Fleece and other early heroic adventures. (3) Focuses specifically on the greatest heroes, Perseus, Theseus and Hercules, with Atalanta thrown in the mix in a curious but understandable editorial decision by Hamilton. (4) Puts together Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid into a giant epic stretching from the Judgment of Paris to the founding of Roman, with the Odyssey and the tragedies of Euripides. (5) Tells about the great mythological families, namely the House of Atreus (Agamemnon), the Royal House of Thebes (Oedipus and Antigone), and the Royal House of Athens. (6) Covers all of the lesser myths, most notably Midas. (7) Goes off in a new direction, providing a very brief introduction to Norse mythology that seems woefully inadequate given the comprehensive compilation of classical mythology that precedes it.
I looked over other possibilities as a basic textbook for an introductory mythology course, but I keep coming back to this one. If you want analysis of these myths, then you certainly want to look elsewhere. But if you want a solid retelling of virtually every tale of classical mythology, then Edith Hamilton's volume is still at the top of the list.

Not my favorite, but I still love it
By Elizabeth
This is not one of the better Tintin books. The illustration makes it very apparent that this is one of the earlier books. I find the story line to be rather choppy. This book was also penned before the introduction of Captain Haddock or Professor Calculus; even the Thompson Twins do not have much depth to them. It is noteworthy that General Alcazar makes his first appearance in this adventure. This book should be read before Herge's final Tintin adventure, Tintin and the Picaros, which in some senses is a continuation of The Broken Ear.
When a wooden statue is stolen from the museum, Tintin is intent on tracking it down. His pursuit takes him through South America, from the fictional country of San Theodoros (in which Herge satirizes the fickleness of a dictatorship) through the jungles of the Amazon. Murder and mayhem accompany him every step of the way.
Despite this book's lackings, it is a Tintin book, a fact which makes it a worthy read in of itself. For collectors, it is a must have. For Tintin enthusiasts, it is an enjoyable tale. For anyone unfamiliar with Tintin, I must stress that the other books are even better.

Minor Tintin, but still great fun.
By darragh o'donoghue
After the artistic, technical and emotional peak of 'The Blue Lotus', Herge wisely decided to take things down a gear, rather than attempt to somehow out-marvel that seminal book. So 'The Broken Ear' is Tintin in a minor key - the undeviating single narrative is shorn of sub-plots; the spaces of South America, compared to the intricate detail of Japan and China in 'Lotus', are comparitively broad.
A fetish originating with the Arumbaya tribe is stolen from the Museum of Ethnology, and replaced with a fake. Tintin knows it's bogus because the original had a broken ear, and discovers that two Spanish crooks are also interested in finding the thief. Heroes and villains end up in the small South American principality of San Theodoros where Tintin is set up and put in front of a firing squad. Saved by coup and counter-coup, Tintin is made Colonel and right-hand man of dictator General Alcazar, among whose officers appear those same two thieves.
'Ear' is full of typical Herge incident, from the comic pursuit of a splendidly abusive parakeet, to a suspenseful downriver kayak-trip in search of a mysterious, hostile tribe. Herge's satiric sense shows how the political instabilities of many South American countries, with their seemingly daily military coups, are fanned by greedy European and American arms manufacturers and oil companies. The European plunder of other civilisations, so memorably a feature of previous adventures, is once again shown to be disastrous, even fatal. There are some wondrous visual conceits, in particular the Arumbaya rainforest sequence, which, set against an abstract, gren backdrop, frames its physical movements (fights, chases etc.) into a mysterious Matissean dance. The representation of landscape and settlements, with the eye on revealing detail, is as resonant as ever.
All this is fine, but one can't help feeling the lack of density, the rather perfunctory nature of the whole.

"Grrrrrreat grrrrreedy-guts!": The Broken Ear
By babydoh
The Broken Ear (L'Oreille Cassée in the original French) is the sixth installment in the Adventures of Tintin series. It is also the first of the Tintin stories set in fictional Hispanic land San Theodoros, which (along with some of its natives) is to play a much greater role in later tales. The "broken ear" in the title refers to that of the Arumbaya Fetish, a small tribal statue whose theft from a museum is what begins the story.

In my mind, The Broken Ear is also the last Tintin story that is fully representative, in both its drawing style and plotline, of the early adventures. Looking at the art in The Broken Ear, one notices it bears a most striking resemblance to its immediate predecessors, notably The Blue Lotus and Cigars of the Pharaoh, whereas The Black Island - which immediately follows The Broken Ear - has a much greater similarity to the late adventures. Of course this is due to the subsequent revision (and revision and revision, in some cases) of those stories - but it's still curious to note.

To sum up, The Broken Ear has all the right ingredients: humor, suspense, intrigue, peril (and plenty of it!). To top it off, it features an ending in which the bad guys get what they deserve. Nothing could ever be lovelier.

(The "grrrrreat grrrrreedy-guts!" of the headline refers to a line often uttered in The Broken Ear by a parrot, who plays a crucial role in this story.)
