Feinstein focuses on the defensive captains from each 1995 squad, young men whose football careers end with the final gun of the big game. In a year when the service academies are enjoying their biggest gridiron success in many seasons, Feinstein's ruminations on the game seem particularly timely.

Although neither Army nor Navy is a college football power anymore, their annual rivalry still attracts national attention, and the game between the two service academies is the most important contest for both schools every season. In chronicling the 1995 game (the 96th meeting between the two teams), Feinstein (A Good Walk Spoiled) provides readers with a comprehensive backdrop to the game by recounting the events leading up to Army vs. Navy. Given almost unlimited access to the players and coaches, Feinstein does a superb job of capturing the emotional and physical impact the long season has on the team members of both sides, while also giving a taste of what life is like at Annapolis and West Point. Feinstein focuses his story by concentrating on a number of players at the two schools, providing brief backgrounds and their reasons for attending the academies. Among the players featured are Army's Jim Cantelupe and the offensive linemen nicknamed "The Fat Men," as well as Navy's Andrew Thompson and Chris McCoy. Providing an extra touch of drama is the fact that 1995 was the last year of Army coach Bob Sutton's contract, and his future at the school would be determined by the Cadets' performance in the Navy game. It is to Feinstein's credit that, although the outcome is already in the history books, he builds a sense of excitement and anticipation throughout the book about what would happen in the contest. Feinstein has a formula: He gets on the inside of a sport and reports what happens over a period of time. He has done it for golf (A Good Walk Spoiled, LJ 2/15/95), tennis, basketball, baseball, and now college football. In this latest endeavor, he examines the rivalry surrounding the annual Army-Navy football game. Feinstein follows both institutions through the 1995 season and, as with all his books, he writes about much more than just the sport. In examining the military academies, Feinstein puts the reader there, describing daily routines for cadets and midshipmen. Part of what makes the book stand out is that the players involved are true scholar-athletes; they are not using their schools as a stepping-stone to the pros. Highly recommended for athletes and their parents, and for all public and high school libraries.

an excellent book about a subject in which I have no interes

This will be very short. I am a 49 year-old, female, English teacher with NO interest in sports! I began this book because there was nothing else to read. After the first few pages I was completely taken in. I could not put it down. Yes, it was about football, but it was more a study in determination, in the hopes of youth, in the foolishness of old men and in heartbreak. Friends and relatives were constantly surprised that I was not only reading this book, but enjoying it so much! Couch potatoes, get a work-out without leaving your chair! Read this book!

Duty... Honor... Country... Sport... IN THAT ORDER

If you are looking for a story of selfish, maladjusted, spoiled, law-bending athletes... this isn't it. No Lawrence Philips or Peter Warwicks here. No chest-thumping, trash-talking, pampered delinquents. No BCS hype, big-time budgets, or recruiting violations. Feinstein reveals dedicated young men -- many of whom are overachievers -- who accept sport in its broader context. While not perfect, we read the story of young men dedicated to an end that is greater than the sum of its parts. I will never watch Army, Navy (and, yes, Air Force) play again without honoring in my thoughts what these young men give day in and day out. Every high school and college athlete should read this book. Beyond football's "purest rivalry," Army-Navy is football (sport) like it ought to be.

Exceptional Read - Very Inspiring

As a former Division I-AA player who played against Army, I was always in awe of the effort the Cadets gave, leaving everything they had on the field. I could not put this book down. It explains the inner workings of the service academies, not just in a football context, and the incredible hardships players at these schools must endure just to get on the field. This book has inspired me to rethink many of my philosophies on hard work and perseverence, because compared to these guys, most of us have it easy.

Ayad Akhtar is a screenwriter, playwright, actor, and novelist. Wonderful thought provoking play.

This is a contemporary play shows modern day Americans trying to come to grips with differences in cultural and religious perspectives. The characters interact both in familial and workplace relationships. The central characters are Christian, Muslim and Jewish. It is written with sensitivity and respect with no hint of bias showing just how difficult it sometimes is to see things from another person's point of view. There is a reason that this play won the Pulitzer Prize as it really challenges us to think. I would definitely recommend this fine piece of literature for those who truly want to read something you will continue to ponder long after the final page is read.

Explosive. Jarring. Uncomfortable. Astonishing.

Ayad Akhtar’s 90-minute one-act Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is one of those rare theatrical works that can leave a reader rather immobile when in the midst of processing the combustible nature of it. In the background of your mind, you think to yourself, Is he sincerely going to go down that road and say publicly what you and everybody else might be thinking but are too polite to mention in casual conversation? And then, he does. Then, a volatile awkwardness ensues, and you have to take a breather to get a second wind for the next spitfire dosage.

The play involves lawyer Amir Kapoor, a disavowed Muslim raised American, who, for the sake of his career, glosses over and dismisses the traditions and values of his Muslim heritage. By doing so, he feels that that he will not be intimately connected with the primitive and zealous back woods fanaticism of extremists, despite that there are kernels of appreciation that he has for his roots. Yet, his wife, Emily, a burgeoning art celebrity who uses Muslim themed elements in her artwork values the Muslim tapestry, traditional and otherwise, that her husband, Amir, shuns. Before and during an important dinner party for Emily’s Jewish art dealer and agent named Isaac and his wife Jory who happens to be Amir’s lawyerly coworker, Amir and Emily discuss a controversal case which might involve religious discrimination of an Imam, a Muslim holy figure who seems to wield some influence over Abe, Amir’s Americanized nephew. After being mentioned in a write-up in the prestigious New York Times as a possible unofficial supporter and or helper of the defendant in question, Amir begins to quake at how it might make him look if he’s associated with an iman who supposedly financially supported terrorist related groups. The charges, too, may be trumped-up and falsified because of politics, ignorance and cultural insensitivity, and this, too ignites Amir’s ire, which lies just beneath the surface. He is between a rock and a hard place. And when the flood gates open, they open wide indeed with an outpouring of venomous dialog that can churn the discomfort level to the extreme, especially so when Isaac and Amir begin to politely “converse.”

Disgraced is appropriately titled, because, by the end of the play, that is exactly what happens to all the characters. They become disgraced, though the disgrace factor varies for each one. Some carry more weight than others, and Amir seems to be the biggest loser in this jolting, vitriolic post 9-11 peep into the judgmental conflict between cultures, politics and ethnic groups. All five characters are changed in ways that they never thought they would be. New enlightenments are unpleasantly gleaned because of the teaspoon of vinegar that they must all be forced to drink. This was a great and surprising play that was very worthy of the Pulitzer Prize.

Wow, this is a must-read! The play really gets into that ambivalent space where MANY Muslims live, but we are NOT represented in mainstream media. It's funny, smart, controversial, & VERY thought-provoking!

The more inspiring when you discover it is a TRUE story.

A full appreciation of this beautiful (and, sadly, out-of-print) novel requires finding and reading Hulme's autobiographical book Undiscovered Country (Little, Brown & Co: 1966). It is dedicated to the REAL Sister Luke, Marie-Louise Habets, who was Sister M. Xaverine of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary (of Ghent, Belgium). Through this friendship came about Hulme's conversion to Catholicism and, of course, the wonderful novel and later - under Jewish director Fred Zinnemann's (Man for All Seasons, High Noon, From Here to Eternity) superb direction, the acclaimed film with Audrey Hepburn. Kathryn Hulme died in Hawaii in 1981, with Marie-Louise Habets, her "Sister Luke" at her bedside. Habets died in 1986. Fortunately the novel, movie, Soundtrack LP and even CD are almost constantly available on Ebay. Warner Bros. is said to be considering a DVD release featuring the scenes that were cut from the movie. The screenplay, autographed by Hepburn and Zimmermann, together with all of Hulme's papers, are in the American Writers' Collection at Yale University.

A touching and engaging story enmeshed in feeling

I first read this book two years ago, and to this day its message makes me stop and question my life and its course in this world. This is the type of story you want your children to read, and one, once read, which must be treasured again and again. Hulme's characters are full and rich, human in their fallibility while admirable for their ardent striving to the perfection of God's children. Sister Luke, the main character, is a person so vivid, so real, I found myself sharing her trials as she strove for that perfection, crying in frustration when thoughtlessness or simple humanity held her back. I laughed and smiled when something went right, and strove with her to understand better myself, my fellow people, and the strange world in which we live. Simply put, this is the story of a nurse who chooses a live as a nun, the struggle she makes to balance both roles while remaining true to herself, and the painful decision that finally leads her to change everything to remain honest with herself and God. It is a starkly written story that in itself is simply presented, yet makes the reader delve deeper into herself to get the full experience of this wonderful story. Even if you don't normally read religious books or don't know anything about nursing, READ THIS BOOK! There is nothing more technical to understand than the human heart, and that is truly the center of this book.

The Nun's Story, by Kathryn Hulme, is not a book that can be read in one sitting, due not only to its length but to the fact that the depth of its contents requires the reader to take a deep breath after every paragraph. This touching story tells the life of a young woman who tries arduously to become a good nun. Although The Nun's Story is not related to the majority of people's everyday lives, it demonstrates the beauty and the enchantment of a world which to many is a complete mystery. The Nun's Story is absorbing to the point of tears, a novel in which it is quite impossible not to sympathize with the character. Although it is said that Hulme's intentions were to criticize and denounce convent life, the book in no way creates that sort of atmosphere. It simply shows to the world a bit more about a very special world, and in all truth, this is done beautifully.

The Best One Volume Biography of America's Greatest Man

I only write reviews of the books I feel very strongly about. James Thomas Flexner is, along with Douglas Freeman, considered to be the preiminant Washington scholar. He also happens to be a world class writer. For those of you who do not have the time, or interest, in reading Flexner's monumental 4 volume biography of Washingon, you could not find a better single volume on the life of the most important man in American history. Most great men turn out to be less great the closer you examine their accomplishments. Washington is one of the few whose legend doesn't go far enough. Read Flexner's book and see why George Washington was an icon in his own lifetime... Adored by the great men of his age, beloved by the people, and a moral example who is as relevant to the American experience today as he was two hundred plus years ago. This is a great work of history and a great read. If I had the power, I would make this book required reading for every American citizen.

Simply the Best Single Volume Life of Washington

Flexner is considered, along with Douglas Freeman, to be the great Washington scholar. His four volume biography is a masterpiece of scholarship and historical writing. However, most readers will not have the time to plow through such a large work. Fortunately, Flexner wrote this fantastic book. He has managed to condense the essence of Washington's remarkable life into this single volume. It is every bit as informed and well written as the larger work, and for the curious, by far the best single volume biography of G.W. Every American should read this book. It's impossible to study GW as presented by Flexner and not be impressed. There is a reason why men such as Franklin, Jefferson, Hamilton, Adams, Madison, et al deferred to Washington. In these pages you will learn why.

This book changed my life-really

Several years ago, I spent Thanksgiving with the parents of a friend of mine and started reading this book based on their reccomendation. Well, this book so inspired me, I've continued with biographies of most of our Founding Fathers(including Flexner's "Young Hamilton") as well as the other Presidents and into the Civil War. James Thomas Flexner brings to life a man whom I only knew as the first President, the guy on the dollar bill, and yes, the one who chopped down the cherry tree. My perspective on American history and the man responsible for such a great piece of our history was completely changed by this book. It reads like a novel, though I admit was a bit rough getting started. Once in, however, I was hooked. This biography takes you through Washington's early years as a child, his courtship struggles and life as a surveyor: then, we travel with our hero through the Revolutionary War, the precarious aftermath and his tenure as the first President of the newly founded nation. Flexner shows us that much of this was, for Washington, a struggle indeed, and he seems very much the reluctant hero, whose journey is destined for greatness in spite of himself and the enormous odds against him. It is an epic journey masterfully navigated by Flexner. This biography is worthy of it's subject. If you are an American, read it.

Magnificent

So, each of the first three novels covers one major plot point of the original anime (DOLLARS, SAIKA, Yellow Scarves). Similarly, Volume 4 covers the first half of the new Durarara!!x2 Shou arc.

As for the quality, not only is Narita a brilliant writer, so is the translator YenOn got to write the english version.
