Love Ever After High

I really enjoyed the second installment in the Ever After Series. They are so much more detailed and engaging then either of the Monster High book series and so I give all the credit in the world to Shannon Hale. Shannon is an amazing author of her own works and I think she has done such a great job working her own personality and skills into the Ever After books. I think I enjoyed the first book "Legacy Day" just a little more than this one....I thought the riddle treasure hunt drug on a little too long but that is certainly my only complaint. I loved getting a better perspective on Apple White in this novel. I wasn't sure I cared for her much in Legacy Day and this book did a good job of showing us who exactly Apple is and where her heart is coming from. I do think its time to let Apple and Raven Queen take a seat and let us see more of these amazing characters that are far too often in the background. This is splendid and engaging series for children, teens and adults.

Hexciting Sequel

I am a big fan of the first Ever After High book, so I had high hopes for the second installment. This book has just as much adventure and fun as the first. We get to learn a little more about some of the supporting characters and watch several more entertaining chats with the narrator. Ever After High fans who watch the webisodes should have no problem starting with this book if for some reason they want to skip the first (but you will want to read them all).

I am definitely a Shannon Hale fan now. I recommend this book to anyone who would enjoy a fresh take on classic fairy tale characters.

better than the first

This book was even better than the first book STORYBOOK OF LEGEND. I loved reading the results of Raven's actions and how Raven's mother in her mirror prison hopes her daughter is turning as evil as she is. Besides Raven quest to the answers she seeks for the need to rebel meeting with Red Riding Hood among these she seek answers from. Red Riding Hood's daughter turned out to be among my favorite section of this story as well as Maddie Hatter as she was as fantastic here as she was in book 1. I don't know if this series is continuing any further but this is a book for all those into fractured fairy tale stories.

Disappointed!!!

I have read all of James Patterson books concerning Alex Cross and have enjoyed them a great deal. A "bookshot" is not a good idea to keep peoples interest in a character or in an author. When I read a book, the ending needs to be included. Waiting months for the continuation is frustrating and annoying. I do not believe any fan of an author cares for this type of question as to the final chapter and outcome. Mr. Patterson, please discontinue this writing method and go back to your tried and true way of writing an extremely good series of a very likable family and their lives. You can't improve on an already wonderful and addictive story of the "Crosses." Don't mess with a good thing. If it ain't broke, Don't fix it. Sounds like something Nanna Mama would tell you too.

More of a cheap shot than a book shot

“Novels you can devour in a few hours" Sorry, Mr. Patterson. I find you, as you once described yourself in an interview, to be a decent writer and a great storyteller. However, in this endeavor you have failed. As the copy and pasted quote above states these "Book Shots" are being marketed as short novels (novellas). Novellas have beginings, middles AND ENDS. If this series/story is actually a serial and/or just a teaser for a future work, then it should be marketed as such. To market this as a complete, albeit short, work then give no ending isn't a book shot, it's a cheap shot to your fans.

Tapping hundreds of interviews, library archives and Nin's unpublished erotica and fiction, Fitch ( Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation ) convincingly portrays Nin as a complex, neurotic artist, alienated from her own anger and pain, who worked out her neuroses through her art. She traces the psychological damage inflicted by Nin's father, who photographed her nude, beat her and seduced her in childhood, then seduced her again in 1933. Fitch ably reconstructs Nin's simultaneous romantic involvement with Henry and June Miller in Paris, and her bicoastal, bigamous life divided between Hugh Guiler in New York and Rupert Pole in California. When Nin's diaries began appearing in the mid-Sixties, their popularity earned her a bigger audience than she had ever had. The question that always teased readers of the Franco-American novelist was whether and how her fiction depended on her life experiences. It is now generally acknowledged that her novels are pallid reflections of her own journey, detailed here by Fitch, author of Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation ( LJ 8/83) as well as literary guides to Paris. Fitch presents more than a sensational biography of a sensual woman, also depicting a tumultuous and harrowing life. From her early life, Nin suffered acutely, first after her father deserted the family, then during years of solitude and loneliness. As Fitch shows, her struggle to achieve as a woman and artist was arduous. Recommended for large collections and as a companion to Nin's diaries where they are popular.

Fitch (Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation, 1983) draws on Ana‹s Nin's voluminous self-revelations (150 volumes of diaries, correspondence, and fiction) to produce what the publisher says is the first biography of the French writer--and what turns out to be a wary and defensive work, the very antithesis of Nin's free spirit. Abandoned and deprived in childhood, Nin enjoyed an enduring marriage (for over 50 years) to Hugo Guiler--as well as a series of affairs with Henry Miller, Otto Rank, Gore Vidal, Edmund Wilson, even her own father (who had seduced her in childhood): with men and women of all kinds, culminating in a bigamous marriage to Rupert Cole that had her commuting between New York and California for at least 25 years. Nin dissected her own protean personality in endless psychoanalysis--to her both a religion and a hobby--and delighted in the deceptions, incarnations, and masquerades that she revealed in her diaries in a fascinating display of a personality constantly reinventing itself. In her lifetime, she inspired parodies, films, scholarly newsletters, dissertations, even a perfume, and served as a catalyst between Hollywood, academia, and the feminists, who competed for her attention even though she reviled much of what they represented, choosing to spend most of her life as a sex object. Here, in a work that focuses on her sex life, Nin comes off--perhaps unintentionally--as trivial and culturally insignificant. Fitch overinterprets at the beginning of her text and is excessively factual toward the end, seeming to have either abandoned her method or simply lost interest in her subject. In spite of her use of the present tense and some vulgar familiarities (``Every spring her sap begins to rise''; ``Desire makes her body ache''), the author seems uncomfortable with Nin. The history behind the diaries.

I have to agree with some of the other reviews here that Fitch's work can be cumbersome at times. It is a little confusing in spots, mostly due to the tricky present-tense and Fitch's tendency to make giant, intuitive leaps from one reference to another. I do not, however, feel that this detracts one bit from the subject matter.

I can't imagine another biography addressing Nin's complicated life and neurosis with the same unflinching honesty and compassion. Nin was an extremely complex woman who spent most of her time and energy trying to compartmentalize her life, then painfully pushing against the boundries of those compartments with her life and work. Fitch pulls from multiple sources to draw a more cohesive picture of Nin's life than Anais herself ever did. Though that's rather the point, isn't it? The original published diaries are now understood to be a construct of Nin's talented metaphorical writing: true in a sense, but bearing little resemblence to hard facts. One doesn't read Nin's rich, feminine, lyrical prose for an accurate histoical record. And although it's difficult to be accurate about history under the best of circumstances, Fitch does a fine job piecing together the available clues not only for an accurate timeline, but for some kind of insight into Anais Nin's motivations.

Overall, Fitch portrayed Nin without prejudice, balancing the horrors of childhood abuse and neglect against the adult Nin's conscious betrayals of lovers and friends. Ultimately, she shows Nin to be a very flawed, very passionate artist without excuses. She neither condemns Nin, nor places her on a pedastal. I prefer this way... it's like seeing Nin through the eyes of a true friend;one that loves her for who she was, with no excuses.

She created her own life unhampered by truth

A scholarly biography need not be boring, and one written of the life of Anais Nin cannot be. Fitch's work is creditably balanced in an attempt to sort fact from fiction in Nin's writings. Though some considered her a pathological liar, Nin considered herself simply the creator of her own life. Her Diaries, the most widely known of her writings, suffered, some believe, from her extensive editing. Though Nin claimed the editing was for the purpose of protecting the many players in her life, there is evidence that much of it was simply so that she could be remembered as she wished to be. Sculptor Isamu Noguchi was among her New York circle, and legendary writer Henry Miller was her lover in youth and dear friend in age. These were only two among perhaps hundreds of important figures of her time in literature, art, and psychotherapy, whom she counted as friends and acquaintances and who give a broad appeal to a study of her life. Artists, writers, and those in the various ! fields of psychology and psychiatry can be informed by the way she lived her life and the people she drew into it.

This book is a thoroughly delicious read for the Nin fan. Noel Riley Fitch's fine scholarship, deft analysis, and solid writing make vivid what is surely one of the most fascinating lives of the 20th century. As the title indicates, this books focuses on Nin's love/sex life, but it uses all available diaries and fictional works to piece together what can sometimes be a real puzzle. The one possible problem in Fitch's analysis is that she makes the presumption that Nin was physically violated by her father. There is no doubt whatsoever that Nin was emotionally abused by the man, but Fitch is the first to suggest actual sexual molestation. Though she makes an excellent case for this possibility, her daring thesis caused a bit of an uproar amongst Nin's family and close friends who believe Fitch played fast and loose with the facts. I can understand their concern; it is a serious thing to accuse someone of such a crime. Still, Fitch's argument is so compelling that I don't believe it can be easily overlooked.
For anyone interested in understanding Anais Nin, this book posits a provocative theory while also pulling together the facts of her life.

Amazing Story

Fast paced story. Just like the movie (of course with a few exceptions) and a remarkable way of story telling. I personally don't beleive in the Ouija superstition but of course stories like this are always fun to witness.

13 Treasures prequel

One Wish is a new prequel story for Michelle Harrison's Thirteen Treasures series so it's ideal for fans of the series or anyone who is new to this author. This whole series has been incredibly fun to read and One Wish is no exception to that, it has all the magic and wonder you could hope for from a fairytale and is full of great characters and fun adventures.

Tanya is a young girl with the second sight which allows her to see the fairies and other fae creatures. This rare ability often gets her in trouble, the fairies don't like to be seen and they take great pleasure in tormenting her by causing mischief and because Tanya's mother can't see them it is always Tanya who gets the blame for the things they do. Tanya is thrilled when she meets a young boy called Ratty and realises that he has the same ability as she does, not only can he see the fairies but he also has ways to protect himself against them and he's willing to teach them to Tanya. When Ratty is kidnapped it is up to Tanya, along with Ratty's mischievous fairy guardian Turpin, to rescue him but that is going to be easier said than done.

One Wish is an incredibly whimsical tale full of colourful characters. My favourite would have to be Turpin, she's such a tricky little pest but her heart is in the right place and she would do anything to protect her Ratty. I also really enjoyed the Wishing Tree who always speaks in rhyme. Tanya is a fabulous main character and I've enjoyed following all of her adventures.
