The Castafiore Emerald was Herge's third-to-last completed Tintin story, and the most unconventional. Rather than a globe-trotting adventure, it takes place completely at Marlinspike Hall, where an incapacitated Captain Haddock is being nursed back to health by an unwelcome visitor in the form of Bianca Castafiore, the "Milanese Nightingale" who then suffers a devastating loss ("Mercy, my jewels!"). It's disfavored by some fans due to the lack of action, but the locked-room mystery, character interactions, running gags, and crazy Calculus inventions keep it fun and definitely worth reading. --David Horiuchi

About the Author
Hergé, one of the most famous Belgians in the world, was a comics writer and artist. The internationally successful Adventures of Tintin are his most well-known and beloved works. They have been translated into 38 different languages and have inspired such legends as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. He wrote and illustrated for The Adventures of Tintin until his death in 1983.

"They say I'm divine..."

Later in his career Herg' set himself of writing what amounts to a kind of anti-Tintin adventure, where nothing really happens to his cast of characters (there are no opium smuggling rings to smash nor any political coups to thwart), and yet everything happens all the same. THE CASTAFIORE EMERALD may in many ways be Herg''s masterpiece, and it is unquestionably the funniest of all his tales, revolving as it does on the theme of miscommunication ("No, this is not Cutts the butcher!"). Naturally at the very heart of it is the Milanese Nightingale herself, Bianca Castafiore, the world's greatest opera star, who deigns to descend upon the only two people in the world who cannot bear to hear her sing, Tintin and Captain Hamhock (er, Haddock). In addition to La Castafiore comes her entourage (her accompaniest Wagner and her maid Irma), a gaggle of photographers, a suspicious band of gypsies, a television crew, and even a local brass band. Before the tale is done Dr. Calculus will experiment with roses and color television, Tintin will have a mystery or two to unravel, Captain Fatstock (er, Haddock) will explode with fury an untold number of times, and the divine Castafiore will be asked (as always) to sing, to Tintin and Captain Haddock's horror, her signature aria from "Faust." "Yes, it was the 'Jewel Song' from 'Faust' that swept me to the pinnacle of fame," the opera star modestly informs her television interviewer, "They say I'm divine..." And she is.

Funniest but not the best

The Castafiore Emerald is without a doubt the funniest Tintin. But it's not the best. The reason is, it is solely confined to Marlinspike and Castafiore is truly irritating. However, it does give Captain Haddock full license to swear like the old sea dog he is. The ending is not climatic but you see why Herge had to write it. Castafiore has been around for a long time (since King Ottokar's Sceptre) and not to write a book that centered on her would have meant many fan's letters asking for such.

The only Tintin book which I wasn't crazy for...

I have been reading and collecting Tintin books since...well, before I really could read! I have read all of them (including "Tintin in the Congo") and must say that this one is the only one which I truely didn't care for. Yes, it's a Tintin book which makes it still good for die hard fans. But if you haven't read any or many Tintin books and are looking to see which one to read next, I would suggest any of the others before this one.

Excellent...for what it covers

As many of the previous reviewers note, this text is not as good as Glannon's E&E Civ Pro text. While this is true, it is a little misleading to just leave it at that.

The text is excellent, for the tort law that Glannon chooses to cover. The book is mainly about negligence, and Glannon does a fine job covering such a broad topic. The only problem is that, under the intentional torts, Glannon only covers assault, battery. As for defenses to intentional torts: self-defense, and consent. That is way this one is not as good as the others. The title of the book should read: "The Selected Law of Torts."

So don't be misled. This is not your end-all be-all of torts supplements. But, if your having problems with negligence, or causation, this is a fantastic reference. The examples do a great job of slowly working you though those ever so important distinctions. If the title of the book let the reader know that this book is mainly about negligence, then I would have given it 5 stars for sure. Hope this helps.

BE CAREFUL WHICH EDITION YOU BUY!

The book is great as it is, no doubt, but the older editions do not have Products Liability in them, which is VITAL to your studies. Make sure you get the latest edition, which has two chapters on PL.

Aside from that one missing element in the older edition, the rest of the book is excellent.

Not Worth the Money

Generally, the Examples and Explanations series are thorough and helpful. However, this particular book falls short. There are 7 intentional torts; yet, this book only covers assault and battery. Additionally, only 2 privileges are covered -- self-defense and consent. I didn't bother looking at how the book covered negligence. Unless your Torts I class provides a survey of the material, especially the intentional torts, do NOT buy this book if you want extensive treatment of torts concepts.

Couldn't put it down!

My son could not wait for this book to publish after reading the first "Treasure Hunters" book. He read it in two days. He is already excited for book three! These are his favorite books and I am grateful to James Patterson for writing books full of adventure that inspire a love for reading! The first books my son could not put down. He took them wherever we had to go! One woman even commented "it is so nice to see a child with a book in his hands instead of a gaming device." Thank you James Patterson!

a book worth reading

This book is so worth reading. Not only being for kids it would be a good book for adults as well. The story is full of funny tales and stories kids and adults should get to experience. Although you may want to read this book right away you should read the first book...well first! Treasure hunters is a good book maybe even a little better than this one (not really). This is why I can not wait until the third book comes out keep it up James Patterson because I just love your books. Anyway if you get the chance you should read this book. I have to say storm is my favorite character. If you read the book and rate it tell what your favorite character is too!

My 6 year old enjoyed it, but I didn't

The book is okay. My 6 year old enjoyed it, but I didn't. James Patterson doesn't actually write his books, he writes part of it or simply creates an idea and passes it off. Normally I don't care, but this book had a clear line where it sounded like another author stepped in. The whole tone of the book changed as well as the level of violence and gun references. Very odd to read, it was like a grade school project where the teacher hands you a partially written story and asks you to finish it. I wouldn't recommend it for little kids (less than 10) since there is violence and implied death, especially of the parents. The geography portion is educational, but in the copy I had the map of the US was drawn wrong. Not sure if that made it to the final copies.

Fun Book for Little Ones

A funny, little bit zany book that my 3.5 year old grandtwins love. They were concerned about the piano floating away when I read the book to them the first time, but soon came to love the book for the silliness of taking a piano to the beach. They love this book, and I recommend it as a fun book.

Great Book for Beginners and Intermediate Students

This book is well-written and lavishly illustrated with good-quality color photographs from a number of well-known contemporary photographers. The basic physics of color theory and color perception are well laid out. The text and explanations are easy to follow, even for a novice. Having taught color photography for a number of years, in the US and in France and Italy, I have found that this text to be the most consistently useful for my students.

Much like his Basics of B&W photography Horenstein 's Color photography manual is a easy to read, is filled with excellent information and contains tons of photographs that inspire his readers. In short, this book is perfect for anyone beginning in color photography.

A Guide For Color Photographers

Henry Horenstein, author of BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY: A BASIC MANUAL, a book often used as a photography text book, has a similar book on color photography. COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY: A WORKING MANUAL offers the same excellent how-to information provide in the black and white counterpart. The book contains many of Horenstein's excellent photographs and offers information regarding filters and developing color prints. While it contains some information on color transparencies (slides), it is somewhat scant and may in the long run be more helpful for printmakers. At a time when digital photography is all the rage, this book is not obsolete since Horenstein's expertise will help ant photographer, no matter what the medium.

Colorful and Mystical Story Journeys Laced With Fun

I admit that I’m mainly aware of the Ever After High series due to seeing the book and the dolls featured at my job around late 2013. I remember putting up one of the Ever After High dolls during the beginning weeks around the my job’s grand opening to the public. I was thinking that the summary of one of the dolls I saw does sound like a good cartoon to watch. Imagine my surprise when I did discover that there is both a cartoon and book series around the Ever After High Dolls. This book Ever After High once Upon A Time; A Story Collection by Shannon Hale is a fascinating and original read for both aspiring writers/scriptwriters and people who simply enjoy uplifting fantasy stories (including for children obviously). This book creatively tells various tales of offspring who are living a happy and enriching life but there is also understandable emotional conflict around wanting to avoid following in the family legacy if it is shadowy. For instance, the story of Apple White and The Ebony-Haired Legacy shows a girl who very much enjoys life while preparing to follow a destiny similar to her mother Snow White. Quirky pop culture references are shrewdly sprinkled and Snow White is mentioned as being a big music lover and an implied fan of One Reflection and their song You Don’t Know You’re Charming (I’m guessing a respectful tribute to One Direction’s You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful). Apple White enjoys listening to music on her Mirror Phone. Then there is the story of the Raven Queen and the Mirror Prison featuring Raven Queen, a direct descendant of the Evil Queen in the story of Snow White (due to Raven Queen being the Evil Queen’s daughter). Raven Queen loves her mother, but is understandably conflicted about following the dark destiny that her mother expects her to. Raven Queen is mentioned as being an implied fan of Tailor Quick because she is listening to a Tailor Quick album on her MirrorPod (I’m guessing polite homage to the Apple iphone and/or Apple ipod). Fortunately, the enjoyable cartoon series of Ever After High is currently available for free on Netflix and Youtube (although I’m currently unsure of how long it will be free). Watching the cartoon series gives an important creative glimpse into the characters and plot development of ever after high. For me, one of the reasons why I’m glad to have unexpectedly come across the series (as an aspiring writer/scriptwriter) is due to the brilliant and unique story development in an enchanting mystical world.

A new twist to classic fairy tales

My 7 year old daughter heard about these books and got them for Christmas. She really loves them but it is a little above her reading level so I read it to her at night before bed. I've been enjoying the books myself as well.

Once upon a Christmas order

This is one of the first books in the series and I can't wait for my niece to open this at Christmas. She's going to love it and the fact that it's hardback means that it's durable enough to stand up to transportation between home and school. Great product!
