Meet Tinkerbell
By Kelly Gresham
Great book! The pictures are beautiful for this type of paperback beginning reader. We do have the movie and this book follows the movie with an exception. In the movie Tinkerbell desires to go to the mainland and ends up being the first of the tinker fairies permitted to go.
However, my daughter doesn't mind that part being left out and asks me to read it with her frequently.

Loved These Books
By Kebmub
I wan to clarify this review by saying I loved reading these books when I was a kid, so I bought a bunch for my niece and nephew. Upon receiving the books I noticed something was off. I had an older copy of The Red Sea Sharks around, so I compared the two and was shocked to see the dialogue lettering was completely different in the new version. The newer digitally typeset lettering detracts from the experience of the book compared to the older hand lettering. Among other things, large areas of white space are left unfilled, which disconnects the flow of the eye. I returned all the books I ordered because of this unnecessary change. These books were so great as they were. Why on earth would you change them? Blistering Barnacles! Visigoths! Poltroons!

Freeing slaves and fighting shady arms dealers
By Thomas Wikman
Tintin is one of the most famous comic book characters in the world. Unfortunately he is not as well known in the U.S. Hopefully I can help change that. The Tintin albums were created by the Belgian comics writer and artist Georges Prosper Remi under the pen name Hergé. His first Tintin album "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" appeared in the pages of Le Petit Vingtième on January 10, 1929 and his last completed album was "Tintin and the Picaros" in 1975/1976. The Tintin albums are primarily for children but they are written so that adults also greatly enjoy them.

Tintin is a Belgian investigative journalist who gets drawn into all kinds of dangerous and eventful adventures around the world. Already in the very first album "Tintin in the Soviets" he is aided by his talking dog, a fox terrier called Snowy. In Swedish and in French Snowy is called Milou. In "The Crab with the Golden Claws" he meets the grumpy but hilarious Captain Haddock. A lot of the best comic situations arise from Captain Haddock's bad temper in combination with his bad luck and above all his creative use of words. As a sailor Captain Haddock is expected to swear a lot but all swear words have been replaced by expressions like "billions of blue blistering barnacles", "you Mameluke", "Macrocepahlic Baboon", "odd-toed ungulate", "and troglodyte "," Pithecantrophus", but never real swear words. Another source of many comic situations is the genial but hearing-impaired Professor Cuthbert Calculus (Kalkyl in Swedish, Tournesol in French). Other prominent supporting characters are the incompetent twin detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond and Dupont), and the constantly joking and laughing but irritating insurance salesman Jolyon Wagg.

In this album from 1958 Tintin and Captain Haddock unexpectedly meets an old friend of Tintin, the former dictator from South America, General Alcazar. It turns out that General Alcazar is trying to purchase weapons from a shady arms dealer who is also illegally selling arms to two fighting parties in the Middle East. The son of the emir Ben Khalish Ezab (one of the fighting parties) the rambunctious Abdullah is staying with Captain Haddock (and Tintin) and is playing all kinds of tricks on everyone. To get away from this Arab Dennis the Menace and all his pranks they go see the emir himself and end up getting deeply involved in an incredible adventure. They also stumble upon an organization that is selling African slaves (slavery still existed in the Middle East and Africa in 1958). A lot of old crooks and friends from other books show up here, including Captain Allan, Rastapopolous, and the lovely but highly irritating Prima Donna and opera singer Bianca Castafiore.

This album is fast paced, action packed and very exciting and quiet interesting. It is difficult to put the book down even for an adult. The humor is superb and there are laugh out loud moments on almost every page.

It is my experience that American kids will love the Tintin albums once they have been acquainted with them (an album is a hardback comic book with the pictures in series). My kids love them and their friends love them as well. As a child, I read all of the Tintin books in Swedish, and as an adult living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. This book is intensely exciting and full of action and therefore it is one of my favorites, and one of my children's favorite. I highly recommend this Tintin album to young and old.

More high adventures in Arabia
By Gary Selikow
After a strange encounter with General Alcazar of San Theodoros, and then getting home to see that Emir Ben Kalish Ezab, has sent his thoroughly obnoxious son, Prince Abdullah, to stay at Marlinspike, the Emir is deposed by the evil Revolutionary thug, Sheik Bab El Er.
Tintin and the Captain fly to Khemed, to try to get to the bottom of an illegal arms buying racket and if they can, to help their friend, the Emir.
There they take a boat to Mecca , where they must battle several enemies , in a high adventure on the Red Sea. Before the adventure is through , they will break a slave smuggling ring and ensure the defeat of several villains.
The issue of slave trade by Arabs , of Africans , was not only still going on when this book was written in 1958 , but is still endemic today , in places such as the Sudan.
These adventures are always full, of life and colour.

A wonderfully illustrated look at Alexander the Great
By Lawrance Bernabo
Robin Lane Fox considers Alexander the Great to be the world's first authentic hero. Having retraced Alexander's 10 year, 11,000-mile march in carving out his empire and written a prize-winning biography, "Alexander the Great," the author certainly has the credentials to back up this particular book. "The Search for Alexander" emphasizes the conqueror's personality, motivation, and incredible ambition that consistently overcame severe obstacles of geography, weather, morale, and food supply. Consequently, this book reads more like a detective story, sifting through the historical record to make his best case for what really happened and why. "The Search for Alexander" contains more than 220 photographs, 135 in full cover, including striking pictures of the royal tombs discovered at Vergina, Greece in 1977, which Lane Fox argues is the burial place of Alexander's father, Philip II. If you have even a passing interest in the subject, this is a fascinating book, whether you are content just to look at the pictures or are really interested in the historiography involved in this volume.

Well worth the money!
By Carolyn
I thoroughly enjoyed Robin Lane Fox's book "The Search for Alexander". The book was very interesting and informative and the photographs were outstanding. The only thing I was disappointed in was on page 68 is a photo of the head of a statue that might be Hephaestion, and it is placed too close to the edge of the page so that the nose is cut off. I have also read Mr. Fox's books "Alexander the Great" and "The Making of Alexander". I have enjoyed reading and re-reading all three of his books. I find Mr. Fox to be a very likeable man and his books are very fair to Alexander. I highly recommend all of Robin Lane Fox's books.

Decent read... Much better and well written accounts of all things Alexander out there. If you're a fanatic of that time period like myself, its worth the read - if this is your first book on the subject, look elsewhere.

Four Excellent Novellas
By Solitary Recluse
The second light novel in Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online series is very different than the first, but in some ways even better. The first novel was a standalone story, not even intended to become a series. Book two is a set of 4 novellas that he added to fill in some of the time-skip that was present in the first novel. One major criticism of the first novel with that time-skip, was that the lead character, Kirito, did not get to experience a character arc showing him changing as he spent years inside of the Virtual World. Book 2 helps to fix this by showing him at different points, experiencing friendship, happiness, family, and sorrow. It is also different with two of the four novellas being written from different points of view. If you are familiar with the Anime, these four were all interwoven into the plot from the first book. Personally, I find they work better on their own. Here's a brief summery and review of each one.

1. The Black Swordsman - Written from the point of view of a young girl, Silica, the story is about the loss of her dragon companion and the boy who helps her in a quest to revive it. 8/10 - Well written with an interesting twist at the end.

2. Warmth of the Heart - Written from the point of view of an older girl, Lisbeth, this story contains much humor and the start of romance while on an adventure to find materials to construct an exceptional sword. 9/10 - A story that can make you laugh and cry with what might have been.

3. The Girl in the Morning Dew - Set between chapters 17 and 18 of the first novel while Kirito and Asuna are resting on a lower floor after their in game marriage, this story starts as a slice of life tale before jumping into the mysterious appearance of a young child in the middle of the woods. 6/10 - The story drags a bit in my opinion, but it sets up a recurring character who has a greater impact in the next book.

4. Red-Nosed Reindeer - In chapter 14 of the first book, we were introduced to Kirito's first guild, the Moonlit Black Cats, and the girl he cared about, Sachi. Those 2 pages are expanded here along with a special Christmas quest. The story more than any other explains Kirito in a way that no other does. 10/10 - Simply amazing. This story is what made me love this series. Incredible.

You'll be coming back for more!
By ChibiNeko
I have to admit that I'm still pleasantly surprised by this series, as I wasn't expecting to like the first volume and I was also somewhat unsure that I'd like the continuing volumes of the series since I don't always like ongoing series. However this really is a good follow-up to the first volume in that readers could still read this and not have to worry about continuing the series if they didn't want to (although odds are that you probably will).

Rather than have a volume with one story straight through, this is a collection of several shorter stories that center around Kirito's interactions with others during his time in SOA (so it's somewhat of a prequel instead of a sequel). I will admit that anyone familiar with the typical tropes of Japanese works of this nature (anime, manga, light novel) will be able to predict how many of these will end for the most part, but knowing the destination of the short stories doesn't ruin the enjoyment of them. They're just nice light stories that make for a pleasant read. I will say, however, that if you didn't like the first volume then odds are that you probably won't enjoy this one much more since it's the same type of dynamic here. Things will change up slightly in the next volume since the game field is also changing, but for now this volume's plot and motivations are the same as the ones in volume 1.

Now many may be tempted to skip this in order to start reading the second part of the SOA story that begins with volume 3, but I'd like to caution you against that since this volume does introduce a few characters that will show up in volume 3. (I peeked.) Odds are that the future volumes will include a slight back story about these characters since the light novel magazines are somewhat used to having people jump into a series mid-stride, but it's just better to read this and have the complete story as you go along. Plus the volume is just fun.

For parents: This volume is pretty low key when it comes to the topics of violence and sex. It's fairly chaste when it comes to sex, much like the first volume, but there are some extremely mild loli jokes in one of the stories that are played for laughs. (No sex is mentioned, mostly it's just laughing at the idea that people might mistake Kirito for an admirer.) Violence-wise there is your typical game-type violence, although there is a mention of death in the final story since they bring up Kirito's old guild, but it's nothing gratuitous.

Great book for the SAO fan!
By Chex mex
If your a fan of the anime, this book is great! More detail in the girls Kirito meets and more!
Just remember this is not the main story, these are the side stories with the girls like Yui, Liz, Sachi, and Silica.

"I want to make every recipe in this book. . . . And you should, too!"--David Lebovitz, author of My Paris Kitchen and Ready for Dessert
Comforting breads, buns, pastries, cakes, cookies, and other baked delights from the Middle East
There's always something sweet in the oven at Honey & Co., the tiny restaurant in London where the day is marked by what comes out of the pastry section. In the morning, sticky buns are stuffed full of cherries and pistachios; loaves of rich dough are rolled with chocolate, hazelnuts, and cinnamon. Lunch is a crisp, crumbly shell of pastry filled with spiced lamb or burnt eggplant, and at teatime there are cheesecakes and fruitcakes, small cakes, and massive cookies-so many treats that it's hard to choose one. And after dinner? Poached peaches with roses, something sweet and salty drenched in orange blossom syrup, or maybe even a piece of fresh marzipan.
This is the magic of Middle Eastern soul food. This is Golden.

Shining Sea, by Anne Korkeakivi

An arresting and absorbing novel that spans decades, drawing us into the turbulent lives of a family in Southern California after the sudden death of the father

Beginning in 1962 with a shocking loss, Shining Sea quickly pulls us into the lives of forty-three -year-old Michael Gannon's widow and offspring. Brilliantly described and utterly alive on the page, the Gannon clan find themselves charting paths they never anticipated, for decades to come. Told with a cinematic sweep, Shining Sea transports us from World War II to the present day, crisscrossing from the beaches of Southern California to the Woodstock rock festival, from London's gritty nightlife in the eighties to Scotland's remote Inner Hebrides, from the dry heat of Arizona to the fertile farmland of Massachusetts.

Epic, tender, and beautifully rendered, Shining Sea is the portrait of an American family-a profound depiction of the ripple effects of war, the passing down of memory, the making of myth, and the power of the ideal of heroism to lead us astray but sometimes also to keep us afloat.

Review
"This absorbing generational story...explores complex dynamics and captures the mood of different decades in America. Korkeakivi's cogent insight into family relationships and the impact of personal loss, as well as how the times we live in effect who we are, shines through.... Each character's story is rich and excellently crafted.... In the end, Korkeakivi seamlessly brings her themes full circle-heroism, the importance of family, and giving back to the world."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"[An] impressive story about how a family will band together and perhaps drift apart to live on."
―Sarah Bracy Penn, Harper's Bazaar

"An absolutely transcendent novel about great love and great loss, with a majestic sweep from WWII to Woodstock to modern times. About the memories that change-and save us-and the connections one extraordinary family breaks and remakes. So alive, the novel virtually breathes."―Caroline Leavitt, author of Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You

"I tore through it. Shining Sea is a beautifully drawn testament to everyday heroism and to the power of the family to persevere in the face of tragedy and turbulent world events."―Charlotte Rogan, author of The Lifeboat

"I could tell you how in Shining Sea Anne Korkeakivi masterfully explores the impact grief, and war, have on a family. But I will just say this: I loved this book."―Ann Hood, author of Comfort: A Journey Through Grief and The Italian Wife

"When I finished reading Anne Korkeakivi's stirring second novel, Shining Sea, I had to double-check the page count--how could such a huge, multi-generational saga be told so skillfully in less than 300 pages? But Korkeakivi does so, and does it so well, never losing her grip on the reader's attention. The canvas is large, but so are the characters and, most importantly, Korkeakivi's talent which brings them to life. I really, really loved it."―David Abrams, author of Fobbit

"Shining Sea is a novel of clap-demanding authorial grace. Its drama is eloquent, its message resonant. The truly remarkable Anne Korkeakivi has written a laudable and relentless novel."―Chigozie Obioma, author of The Fishermen

"A panoramic novel tracing generations of the Gannon family illuminates the aftershocks of war in the 20th century.... The effortless prose and vining plot make for a winsome tale of kinship and growth. Endearing characters carry a sinuous story of family bonds."
―Kirkus Reviews

"A gut-wrenching story about war, family, and the persistence of memory, Shining Sea will take you all over the globe without so much as leaving your reading chair."―Sadie L. Trombetta, Bustle

"An engaging and moving multi-generational epic."―Largehearted Boy

"A meditation on family, the long shadow of war over generations, and myth-making."―The Millions

"With a far-reaching plot...and storytelling that couples pointed restraint with sweeping vision, Korkeakivi covers the not-so-shining moments of the late twentieth century. The result is a family saga that explores the lingering effects of war and the elusive emotions of peace."―Carol Haggas, Booklist

"An epic tale of resilience.... Korkeakivi's prose is clear, honest, and unadorned throughout. Excellent at crowd control, she deftly handles the curves and swirls of many characters over a long period of time. The big arcs of a life seem to fascinate Korkeakivi particularly, and she is at her most remarkable when flying high for the bird's eye view, then swooping straight down into her characters' hearts."―Lisa Alexander, The Common

"This elegantly crafted, brilliantly structured novel is an intimate epic that speaks volumes about the complexities of shared history, and the way we are all overshadowed by the ever-present past. Possessing immense intelligence and a deeply felt understanding of family as the ongoing struggle with which we all must engage, Shining Sea is a quiet, resonant wonder."―Douglas Kennedy, author of The Blue Hour and The Pursuit of Happiness

"If you haven't yet found your perfect beach and/or Labor Day read, fret not: Shining Sea is the family saga you want to read-with a message about war that won't leave you queasy from sweetness. Korkeakivi writes beautifully; gobble this one up and keep an eye out for her next."―Bethanne Patrick, Lit Hub

"It'll look good on your bookshelf, and it'll make you cry. It's a win-win."―Lydia Mansel, Elite Daily

"[Told] with both epic scope and beautiful minimalism."―Josh Potter, Shelf Awareness

Great story about a family
By Mia
I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. The narrative covers decades in the lives of one family as it is indelibly affected by major global events (war) and major private events. It has love, redemption, second and third chances and all those things that can make an outwardly ordinary life seem large, important and full of grace. It's a small and quiet story, but it's so well done, with the characters rendered so vividly and with such kindness, that it ends up being a very engaging and charming read. One of the characters toward the end says it's a story of an American family and it really is the sort of slice of life Americana sort of thing, only the high end of as it were, not the bleak noir struggles, in fact never bleak, always hopeful, which in itself is something of a miracle. Very enjoyable read. Recommended.

An American Family Across the Decades
By Mary Lins
"All her life, she's wanted to believe in the truth of order. But life is more like a crazy juggernaut of possibilities."
This is what Barbara Gannon thinks about life in Anne Koreakivi's novel, "Shining Sea", as she looks back at her family over the decades.

"Shining Sea" can be categorized as a historical novel revolving around one family from 1962 to 2015. It touches on all the major issues of those years, particularly the Vietnam War. The story is told from the points of view of Barbara, the matriarch of the family of five: three boys and two girls, and from the perspective of her youngest son, Francis. Like most of us, Barbara's life has not turned out the way she planned or wanted, and for most of her life she continually wonders "if only" something pivotal that happened in 1962 hadn't happened. She muses: "Why can't life just run like minnows through one's fingers, moving fast but bright and tickling? Why does it have to be so full of darkness and shadows?"

But we know that life IS full of shadows, and it's pointless to mourn the life you thought you would have.

"Shining Sea" was fast-paced, beautifully written, and it held my interest. For a similar look at one family across the years I also recommend Jane Smiley's Last Hundred Years Trilogy, starting with "Some Luck".

Superb family novel...
By Jill Meyer
Life doesn't always go the way we want it to. Dear loved ones die and others can disappoint us by their choices and mistakes they make. And, we can disappoint others, as well. Life's a crapshoot, any way you play it. In Anne Korkeakivi's marvelous new novel, "Shining Sea", her portrait of a family in change, through the early 1960's to today, resounds brilliantly on the ups and downs of the Gannon/McCloskey family.

The story centers on Barbara Gannon and is told in chapters centering on different characters in her family, each at a different date in time. The chapters are almost short stories themselves, particularly the long one about Francis Gannon and a boat trip he took from Scotland to Ireland. It was to change his life, but he - one of Barbara and Michael Gannon's five children - had had his life made difficult by the deaths of his father, brother, and best friend. The story of his father's death, after having survived the Bataan Death March and while practicing medicine in Los Angeles and raising a family, is the beginning of the book. The plot - and the beautifully drawn characters - go out like ripples from that early death. Dr Michael Gannon's family all cope with his death in different ways and they can't seem to comfort each other. The children - from the oldest at 15 at the time of her father's death to the youngest, not yet born - are adrift. As a picture of the turbulent counter-culture of the 1960's and the Vietnam War to today, the Gannon children and grandchildren touch many of the events that are snapshots of the times.

Anne Korteakivi's novel is not long. It is fewer than 300 pages, but there's not a wasted scene or unsketched character. It's almost as good as another contemporary novel, "Christodoro" by Tim Murphy, which also beautifully covers the same time period. Both are family sagas and both are well worth reading.
