Great as always

Recently got my copy and the manga is as funny and cringe-inducing as ever.

Her antics continue to hit a spot and you just can't help it but to feel sorry for her and tell her it's not that bad.

I was expecting the reveal of Komiyama to take place in the next volume but it's nice to see that wasn't the case.

Still impressed by the quality of the book as always.

Wow We're already past what took place in the anime and getting into some new stuff.
Oh and the pain, I hurt and cringing so much for Tomoko. I know your trying to help Sensi but do you have to embarrass her?
You can't help but want to see her succeed and grow.

Yet again, another brilliant manga in the Barakamon series. It's great because it is very relaxed and doesn't force events to happen. It's literally like being there and I really love this series. Looking forward to volume 3.

In these politically charged times, the term multiculturalism unfortunately has acquired pejorative connotations; for many, the term implies a rejection and bashing of our shared historical traditions and icons. Takaki, a Hawaiian of Japanese ancestry, is a professor of ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He has gathered a collection of first-person testimonies from a variety of sources; they include Frederick Douglass, who relates his surprisingly affectionate feelings for the wife of his slave master; Lee Chew, who describes his experiences as a Chinese laundryman; and Sadie Frowne, a Polish Jewess who describes her life in a New York sweatshop. The effect of these "voices," augmented by Takaki's insightful commentaries, is not to inspire division or the building of psychological enclaves. Rather, it is to broaden the sense of our shared and wonderfully diverse heritage. This is an excellent book. Seeing the American experience through the eyes of different cultures was a very eye opening experience. This is an excellent cultural education. The prejudice experienced by new immigrants and those of us who will always "look" different--non-white, can be experienced by everyone to take the narrow out of our mindedness.

Why I give this book a 4?

Ronald Takaki focuses on his book about Asian-American history through Asian and non-Asian perspectives. It is often controversial because readers would think that this is reverse racism towards White-Americans but NO! One must remember Asian have been in the U.S. for 150 years and out of these 150 year, around 120 years the government has institutionalized racism towards the Asians so 4/5 of Asian-American history is about racism. Even the past 30 years after the civil rights movements there is still resentment towards Asian-Americans. So if one was to write about Asian-American history, racism could not be obliterated unless you would like to omit 80+% of the history to appeal to the everyone.
The fact is racism is ugly but we must confront it and solve the problem. This is a message to all American and all earthlings no matter your background. The reason for this is that well a majority of the population may mistreat the minority of that particular population but a individual from the majority would become a minority when he/she travels elsewhere. Anyone may be mistreated and it is still happening today everywhere. I believe though this book still has space for some minor improvement and I'm certain Mr. Takaki and his staff, pioneers in this area, is working on it. Mr. Takaki's books are actually suggested as reading material in many Universities which I find convincing enough as a book to pickup from the book store or from amazon and read on your spare time if you have a open-mind and want to know more about Asian-American history. Takaki's main focus is Asian-American history but his materials include history of many minority groups such as Irish, African-American, Jews, etc. I look forward to new material from Takaki.

One of the reviews below claimed that there was a theme of "white man is evil" in the book, and I really have to disagree with that. Although it's easy for alternative histories to often fall into that theme, Takaki does well to seperate himself from that pitfall. Rather than replacing WASP history with equally exclusive anti-WASP history, his goal is to incorporate and acknowledge EVERYONE involved in the history of America. I personally think that his explanations of what "a larger memory" truly means are excellent. In addition to all of that, hearing history through the actual voices of people involved was a great idea that I'm sorry to say I haven't ever run into before (although I admit my exposure is somewhat limited).

Overall, I'd recommend this book simply for its vision, if nothing else.

The captioned panels and running text stress the need for reducing waste and saving natural resources. Must have for recycling education

This is an amazing book. It covers the major groups of recyclables. It shares facts, tells children how to prepare each item to recycle, and gives a comprehendable description of how they are made into new products. At the end it even gives children ideas of how they can help.

Great book, but not for first graders.

I bought this book to help me put on a presentation on recycling to a cub scout den. Age group- first grade. I loved the book! I found it very informative and motivating. It touched on all the highlights of recycling. Even included info on landfills. It was presented in a format that a child could easily understand. I read it to my son. He didn't complain, but he loves books, and it really doesn't matter what you read to him.

The day came for my presentation. As soon as I started reading the book to the den, I saw the look of boredom across all their faces (There were 6 of them). I think had they been at least in the third grade, it would have gone much better.

Sacrilege! The handwritten dialogue has been replaced with a digital typeset!

The dialogue in the story, handwritten in the original English versions, has all been replaced with a digital font. This completely changes the character of the story. Basically, 62 pages of calligraphy have been replaced with a typeset font. The font size is irregular, which is distracting, and there is a lot of empty white space in the dialogue bubbles.

I would recommend purchasing the little 3-story hardbacks (about 6.5" x 9.5"), which seem to still have the original writing, or if you like the original large format (about 8.5" x 11.5"), look for an old edition from a used book store.

I uploaded a customer image of the digital font to the Amazon "Look Inside" feature for Tintin Land of Black Gold.

Note that the Amazon "Look Inside" images are not from the current edition. You can tell by looking at the back cover. The old ones are "Printed in Belgium" and use the original title for "FLIGHT 714", which has been changed to "FLIGHT 714 TO SYDNEY" in the current editions. Also, the names of the translators are included on the copyright page in the old editions.

The eeriest adventure

My Tintin obsession began at a very early age, I am most happy to say. The Seven Crystal Balls is the one Tintin book I didn't read before bedtime, for the simple reason that it was too scary! Herge was masterful at creating any scenario and eliciting any reaction from his readers that he wished. In this book he created a spine-tingling supernatural thriller, concluded in the second part of this adventure, Prisoners of the Sun.
Seven Crystal Balls has it's share of laughs as well, provided in particular by Captain Haddock. At the start of the adventure, Haddock desperately trys to relinquish his gruff old sea-dog ways by sporting a monocle and speaking in a very diginified manner. As you can imagine, the results are slightly less than successful.
This adventure seems to focus around darkly lit and heavily furnished rooms, places of scholars and thought that can not combat the evil terrorizing Tintin's world. Prisoners of the Sun takes Tintin to the beautiful countryside of Peru. The contrast is remarkable, the result is beautiful. This two-part adventure is fantastic.

Mysterious Tintin thriller.

Herges Tintin comics are classics and probably the best of the genre. They really are for all ages,some of my best childhood memories are of reading Tintin or Tinni as he is known in Iceland and I still enjoy reading these books today. What makes the Tintin books so good is they seem to have everything in it that make up a good comicbook,originality, interesting characters,adventure,suspense,great humor and well thought out storys. If I had to chose only one Tintin book to take to a desert island I think the seven crystal balls would be it. The book is masterfully drawn like of course all the Tintin books and the story is not just an adventures thriller but it has a mysterious atmosphere to it which i really like.
