A board book for older kids
By Laura Butterfield
I got this for my one-year-old son because he started loving the Pirate Fairy movie after my four-year old made us watch it so many times! This book is really cute, but it is a counting theme. So, even though it's a board book, my preschooler enjoyed it more for its counting theme.

Keep Them Coming!
By Patrick_91
Triage X has been my go to manga since Highschool of the Dead went on Hiatus a few years back (Im a fan of the art style). I found the first 4 or 5 volumes to have more fan service than story and was more balls to the wall action than anything else. However these last few volumes have focused on fleshing out the characters and slowly unveiling the story, Volume 7 has probably progressed the main story more than any other volumes so far and has also given us some insight into ampule zero. To my surprise there was really no nudity in this volume, although the darker scenes that are in almost every volume at least once make another appearance here. It seems like Triage X is a series that is coming to a close soon, unless there is some major plot twist that turns the story on its head (I doubt it seeing as this is a rather clear cut plot) this series may actually have an ending! Cant wait for volume 8 in November.

Amazon.com Review
Peter Guralnick pledges in the epilogue to Feel Like Going Home that his writing will henceforth be "younger, less self-conscious and critical." Don't dwell too much on the author's oath, however: the prose here is hardly jaded and awkward. Initially published in 1971, Feel Like Going Home consists of 11 chapters, most of which are single-subject studies of American roots-music artists. Guralnick openly reveres his interview subjects, which isn't to imply that he fawns over them. The likes of bluesmen Howlin' Wolf and Johnny Shines, incorrigible rock & roller Jerry Lee Lewis, and, in particular, moody man-without-a-genre talent Charlie Rich (who was inspired to write a song called "Feel Like Going Home" based on this book--it's the final song on his final album) come across as knotty, vivid, complex characters. Published in tandem with Guralnick's similarly organized Lost Highway and his superb history of southern soul, Sweet Soul Music, Feel Like Going Home provides an early-stage perspective on a music historian who's truly arrived. --Steven Stolder

From Library Journal
Published in 1971 and 1979, respectively, these titles continue Guralnick's analysis of American music. Feel Like Going Home concentrates primarily on blues artists, with some borderline rockers thrown in, while Lost Highway covers a wide array of artists from several genres, including everyone from Hank Snow to Elvis to Merle Haggard. Both volumes were hits with critics and have a place in popular music collections.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Publisher
"The most loving book I have ever read about American popular music, and one of the more savvy."--Greil Marcus, Rolling Stone

Engaging Portraits Of Music Pioneers
By Bill Slocum
As someone who doesn't know a lot about blues music except to run and hide when someone begins to comment on "the cadential modalities of Muddy Waters's early Chess period" over cocktails, I approached this book with trepidation, unnecessarily. It's a very enveloping and informative look at some of the compelling personalities who helped shape two key forms of American popular music, the blues and rock 'n' roll.

It's not a comprehensive history; Guralnick instead offers some individual, detailed portraits. You can understand him choosing Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Jerry Lee Lewis, because they were all giant figures in the creation of these genres. But other choices are more idiosyncratic, like Johnny Shines, described as "a run-of-the-mill blues singer" by the co-founder of landmark label Chess Records; and Robert Pete Williams, who seems to merge blues with free associative verse and would never be more than a footnote character in most histories. And what's with including Charlie Rich, who had a brief association with rock's founding via Sun Records but never really established himself as either a blues or rock performer?

Guralnick never does tie any of this in; his pieces, however intended to cohere, feel like collected articles written for music magazines. I don't know that they have to be read in order and one after the other, like chapters of a book.

But individually they are good, in most cases very good. Guralnick is an unusual departure from rock writers. He writes with singular care; with craft, honesty, and an engaging sense of humility that draws the reader in. He doesn't make broad claims for anyone's greatness, or dismiss others out of hand. He takes himself out of the picture, and makes it feel like you are the one in the room listening to Shines talking about traveling moonlit country roads with Robert Johnson, looking for a barrelhouse or gin joint to make a few bucks in.

Or Williams, sitting in his country home alongside a dirt road, portraits of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King over his head, drinking away the afternoon and wondering if his inability to pick out a tune at times is because maybe "blues is evil."

"God is warning me, I've got to get myself straight," Williams tells Guralnick. "And yet still and all I don't know, something hits me and I feel peculiar, I might be riding along, say now you get in your car and ride, well the ideas just come to me out of the air. Why is that? What made me think of that?"

Traditional blues music was in trouble by the time of this book's publication, in 1971. Guralnick visits Chess Records and finds a record company about to collapse. It's perhaps symbolic that when Guralnick introduces us to Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, both men are laid up sick in bed. Perhaps an earlier look would have offers a more vibrant take. But Guralnick gets the most out of what he finds.

The best essays are on Wolf, who relishes comments about his "gargantuan" onstage theatricality but exposes a thin skin on other fronts; and Rich, who seems so out-of-water here except for the engaging candor from him and his wife. Rich's drinking problems and lonely sadness are the main focus of his essay, yet Rich not only cooperated with the author, he ended up inspired enough by it to write a song using the book's title. It's the best essay in that you feel for the guy; then again, they're all like that.

I don't know that much more about Skip James or Muddy Waters from reading this book, but I know enough now not to duck off in the other direction when I hear their names spoken of. Good music, like all things in life, knows no boundaries.

A beautiful book by one of popular music's best critics.
By A Customer
Peter Guralnick writes so beautifully about blues, treating it with the seriousness it deserves without making it carry more than it can bear. His writing is so understated and his insights so subtle that you find yourself thinking about his profiles of these artists as you listen to them later. He brings enough scholarly bearing to them to make you realize that what makes blues so special are the things it has in common with all great art--beauty and depth of feeling.

Wonderful Portraits of Musical Giants
By Jason Lubrant
Peter Guralnick begins this book with a tribute to early rock and roll and his adoration of it and then has chapters on mainly blues performers and then Sun Records and finally the final days of Chess Records. Guralnick gives us personal insights on artists, some famous (Jerry Lee Lewis), some more obscure (Robert Pete Williams). Even if you have read every item of information on Howlin Wolf or Charlie Rich this still displays a perspective on them from a different angle. Overall a wonderful glimpse into the world of the performers from a human level.

-Rebellion- the Manga
By Akuma
First off, if you have any complaints about the art and the structure of the panels...you don't remember the movie this is based on, do you? The film itself was very artistic, very stylized, and what Hanokage, who created the original manga based on the anime series, did was try to stay as faithful to the movie as possible.
This did not happen with the original Madoka Magica manga based on the TV anime.
If anyone remembers it, because it was created while the anime was still in production, there were several, several deviations, mainly in the art department, setting, and character design. All the Soul Gems had a reddish/pink color, Homura's shield was shaped like a diamond, Kyouko's spear looked like an elongated cross... It was fun, but not the prettiest piece of work, as the art itself was very stiff, clunky, and almost came off as "splotchy" in certain parts. But Hanokage has greatly improved their art ever since and it truly shows in this manga adaption of Rebellion. It. Looks. Gorgeous. It flows, it's smooth... It's a completely different animal from Hanokage's examples in the original Madoka Magica manga.

There are a few changes made from the movie, though I'm not going to complain. I love to see the changes in these adaptions, just to see if it was done better or worse.

My only real complaint with this (and this applies to the whole three-volume series) would be the translating work. Yen Press/Yen+, while they stay true to, say, the use of honorifics, have issues with transliteration, with wording. The dialogue is too literal, too mature, too...well, wordy. This is an issue that carries over into most Yen Press/Yen+ manga, so it's not the fault of Hanokage and Magica Quartet.

All in all, I love this manga, I love the story, it's, in my opinion, fantastic!

Review
"Ah N.K. Jemisin, you can do no wrong...The blend of cultures and lore she draws on to make this very unique world is just stunning, and the fact that she inhabits it with such 3-dimensional characters is even more impressive...If you want to get away from traditional fantasy world-building, but keep the compelling characters and deep lore, definitely pick this up!!"―Felicia Day on The Killing Moon

"Many books are good, some are great, but few are truly important. Add to this last category The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, N.K. Jemisin's debut novel...In this reviewer's opinion, this is the must-read fantasy of the year."―Booklist

"Jemisin's engaging debut grabs readers right from the start...a complex, edge-of-your-seat story with plenty of funny, scary, and bittersweet twists."―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) on The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms

"An offbeat, engaging tale by a talented and original newcomer."―Kirkus on The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms

"An astounding debut novel...the world building is solid, the characterization superb, the plot complicated but clear."―RT Book Reviews (Top Pick) on The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms

"In The Killing Moon, Jemisin displays her usual skill at portraying a world whose contours seem simple at first but which quickly break down into something much more complex and dissonant. The world is so fully fleshed out that I could breathe its spices, while the story and characters are so much a part of the world that you could not pull this story or these people out and plug them into a different setting. Jemisin proves yet again that she is one of the important new writers in the sff scene."―Kate Elliott, author of Cold Fire, on The Killing Moon

"Jemisin...creates a fabulously diverse array of peoples and lands, shot through with magic, loss, sex, and heartbreak."―NPR Books on The Inheritance Trilogy

"An absolutely fascinating read."―RT Book Reviews on The Killing Moon

"A delight for the fantasy reader."―Library Journal (Starred Review) on The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms

"The best book I've ever read."―Daveed Diggs of Hamilton

An epic fantasy that kept me amused and interested!
By Shay VanZwoll
Roughly two thousand years ago the Gods' War broke out, killing mortals and godlings in the battle between siblings. In the end, Nahadoth and his closest followers were chained to serve the Arameri, the callous ruling family of Amn. But Nahadoth has never forgiven his brother, Bright Itempas, for killing their sister and enslaving their children.

Into the world Yeine steps, adopted by the Arameri and the unknown keeper of a powerful secret. The Inheritance Trilogy (and the included short story in the omnibus) span over 400 years as we watch gods and godlings die and be born, mortal cities fall, and see the fate of the universe change.

I love epic fantasy and I would certainly place this series in that category. The scope of the world that the author has created is amazing, and I love being able to look back at the earlier books to see foreshadowing of what is to come... And what still might happen.

Rating these books individually, I gave the first two (The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and The Broken Kingdoms) both 5 stars and thought they were fabulous for different reasons. Book One is a whirlwind of history, scheming, and magic. Book Two happens at a slightly slower pace and gets more into the details between the mortals and godlings, while still sweeping you along on an adventure. The third book, The Kingdom of Gods, starts out almost too slow but ends up being fun and complex, while sharing more of Sieh's life and history. Because I did feel that the pace dragged a little, especially compared to the first two, I can only give it 4 stars.

The final piece of the puzzle, a short story called The Awakened Kingdom, didn't fit the tone of the trilogy... The puzzle edges just weren't a perfect fit. Unfortunately, it felt more like a forced epilogue rather than a real continuation of the universe, so it only earned 3 1/2 stars. It did grow on me more toward the end, and i liked it more than I disliked it, but I wouldn't have missed it if it wasn't there.

Overall, I give The Inheritance Trilogy a slightly shaky 5 stars, with the full novels giving more weight to the rating.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A BOOK THAT EVEN NON SCI-FI FANS WILL ENJOY-SERIOUSLY
By Ditsy Mitzi
If you are familiar with my reviews then you know that I have a serious addiction that can't be cured by any drug or therapy. My addiction is books, books, books. I may be down to my last few dollars but if I walk into a store especially Barnes Noble, there is a 99.9% chance that I WILL walk out with a newly purchased book. I was at Barnes Noble just waiting for traffic to die down before heading home, my daughter who was impatient to get home, is trying to push me out of the store before I even had a chance to browse (the nerve of her). Now you know that I am not leaving without buying a book. I grab the biggest book in the Sci-Fi section. I had no clue what it was about or if it was even worth (entertainment value) the $20 I paid. It is over 1,400 pages (3 books in 1) so I felt satisfied that I was at least getting my money's worth.

This book is really, really good for a relatively unknown author (compared to Robert Jordan, George R. R. Martin, Karen Miller, Terry Goodkind, etc). Brandon Sanderson, who I consider in a league of his own (he is an evil genius and I love his books) has given this book his endorsement. Here are other reasons to like this book:

1. The author is a woman and has a great sense of humor. You can catch glimpses of it through the characters and then the glossary is laugh out loud hilarious.
2. The world building is quite unlike others I have read about and admired (think of Brandon Sanderson in The Way of Kings). It is full of magic and beautiful buildings and places but unlike other places in other books, it is easy to conjure a picture in my mind of how it looks or at least of how I think it would look if I were watching a movie based on this book. It is a place of sunlight and beauty but where treachery and evil hide in the dark.
3. The heroine is not drop dead gorgeous. That is not to say that she is ugly. She considers herself ordinary but her beauty comes from within.
4. The heroine does not have magic aka super powers but she is the type of person that does what she feels to be right and therein lies her strength and courage.
5. In some fantasy books, you know who the bad guys are and who the good guys are. No so with this book. Once you think you figure out a person, they go and do something to change your perception of them.
6. This story has gods. Well it started with 3 gods but then something happens (I won't tell) and of course the gods have children,,,therefore making more mini gods. When we think of God, we think of love, happiness, joy, truth, wisdom; however, these are not your average gods. They are weapons and you never know if they are good or evil. Makes this story more interesting to follow. Will they help our heroine or will they help her enemies destroy her.
7. On the book itself: Although it is 1,462 pages, the cover is sturdy and so far the spine is untouched. The chapters are not long but neither are they short, just enough to keep the reader wanting to read. Each chapter has a title which let's the reader know where the story is going. Another plus is that the font is not tiny and the spaces between sentence makes it easier for those who have trouble with their vision.
Last but not least, there is a bonus story at the end.

UPDATE AS OF 3/7/15
8. Another thing that I loved about this book that would normally drive me crazy is that the narrator would (or so it seemed) lose her train of thought and start rambling about a totally different subject. As I said, in other books this would drive me nuts but I found that there is always a reason (of course) for going off the subject. Eventually the dots do connect but what I enjoyed about these ramblings (that did not last long, a few pages, if that) is that I gobbled them up so quickly because I wanted to get back to the topic on hand. You will too.

My favorite characters are Yeine (the heroine), Nahadoth (Nightlord) and Sieh. With these three you never know what they are going to do so unlike other books of this genre this adds the element of surprise throughout the book. Oh and did I mention that this author is funny? Oh yes I did but I feel I have to repeat it because it makes this book enjoyable. This author writes about a complicated fantasy world in a simplistic manner not to "dumb" us down but to make this book so easy to read and like. Sometimes, it seems as if the narrator goes off script but stick with it, it all evens out in the end. In a way, the heroine is so like us, her thoughts are all over the place, she doesn't listen, she doesn't follow the rules, she tries to do what is right even if it is not the easy way. Now that is heroine that I can ROOT for.

There are many more reasons to enjoy this book but I don't like it when other reviews give the plot away so I will leave it at this. If you are unsure if you will like this book just go to the nearest book store and read the first couple of chapters. The story is told in the first person by the heroine but this author has a way of writing that makes you understand within the first few chapters what the "major" plot is and where the story is headed. Don't you hate it when you have to read a hundred pages or so of a book in order to get all the characters, places and plot and sub plots straight in your head.

Fantasy Meets Mythology
By Maxine McLister
The Inheritance Trilogy by author N.K. Jemisin contains three books or, to be more accurate, three books and a novella: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, The Broken Kingdom, and the Kingdom of Gods, as well as the bonus novella The Awakened Kingdom. The three books contain many of the same characters and, with the exception of the first, could not easily be read as standalones. And, yet, despite this fact, they all feel like self-contained stories. Although they are interconnected by place, characters, and the events of the first book, the tales occur several years apart and under very different circumstances and all storylines are pretty much complete within each novel.

The books all tend to be character driven. Each is told in the first person by a character who, for some reason, is a kind of fish out of water up against circumstances that could prove deadly for them. In the first, the protagonist is a female warrior from a primitive backwater who finds herself in a dangerous competition for the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and, unfortunately, she is the only one who doesn't know the rules; in the second, the protagonist is a blind artist who can `see' magic and finds herself a suspect in the murders of godlings; in the third, Sieh, the godling of childhood also known as a trickster suddenly begins to lose his godhood after befriending two mortal children and is suddenly faced with the possibility of mortality; the novella is told by a newly born godling who is struggling to find his/her place and purpose in a very confusing world.

Normally, my preference in fantasy is for the gritty realism of authors like Erikson and GRR Martin and this is definitely not that so I was surprised how much I enjoyed all of the books. There is some action but it tends to be minimal and much of it occurs off-stage so-to-speak. There is some great world-building although a hundred thousand kingdoms is a bit of an exaggeration. The characters are very well-drawn and mostly likable. There is also some romance but, fortunately, it never subverts the tale. And there is also subtle humour which I always appreciate.

In many ways, these books seemed more like mythology than epic fantasy with flawed gods and godlings who resemble humans emotionally as well as frequently physically, an origin as well as a creation story, and a kind of love/hate/curiousity relationship between mortals and gods.

I did like the first two books better than the third but it was still worth the read. I found the novella a bit of a departure from the rest but it was still enjoyable. My recommendation: The Inheritance Trilogy is a great choice for fans of the fantasy genre who are looking for something a little bit different, especially if they like stories about gods often behaving badly.

From Publishers Weekly
Jess Moulson wanders in very dark places in this overwrought contemporary thriller from Carey (The Girl with All the Gifts). She doesn't remember the incident that leads to her trial for the murder of 10-year-old Alex Beech, because she was on heroin when she set afire the photos from her ongoing toxic relationship. She doesn't remember escalating to burning down her entire London apartment in an attempt to kill her boyfriend, but Alex, an upstairs neighbor, died in the blaze. Jess is sentenced to Fellside Prison, where she must wrestle with the question of her own culpability, try not to get tangled in the prison's internal drug business intrigues, and, unexpectedly, find that Alex, or what's left of him, may still have a job for her to do. Carey sustains an interesting concept at a high pitch of suspense until nearly the end, when the book implodes into melodrama as the plot becomes completely implausible. The denouement is the novel's lowest point, but the path to get there is taut, tense, and unusual. (Apr.)\n

Great creepy yarn worthy of the best Greek tragedies
By Dyrk Ashton
Amazing new effort by Michael Carey. I loved The Girl with All the Gifts and couldn't wait to get started on Fellside. Carey has a real knack for a creating a wide variety of "voices" and POV, and Fellside is very different from Girl in that respect. The narrative and writing style fit the story perfectly (form follows function). Though it was a while before I could really find myself absorbed, and the build has a gradual curve, the effort is well worth it. Grim, flat (not in a bad way), in the beginning, with nearly no characters to actually "like" or root for, there's a thread of impending... something, that drew me further and further into what becomes an almost psychedelic nightmare of characters' bad choices following good following bad and so on, then I DID begin to care about the characters very much, becoming a story of hope that climaxes in a most bizarre but incredibly satisfying manner. And I must say, Fellside has some of the most beautiful closing lines I have ever read. Highly recommended.

Mostly successful supernatural suspense
By Heather L. Westerberg
Contains very minor spoilers:

Like many other reviewers, Fellside, for me, is a bit hard to describe. I liked it more than I disliked it though, which is the reason for 4 stars.

The basic premise is that Jess, a heroin addict, accidentally kills a boy in a fire. She winds up in jail, where her life intertwines with the inmates in unexpected ways.

I would not classify this book as horror at all, as I never really felt that anything truly frightening was going on. I would say it's more of a suspense novel with some supernatural elements. Unlike others, I did not actually view the "twist" with any surprise, having figured it out fairly early in the novel (the author leaves plenty of clues).

The writing is solid, and overall the book moves at a decent pace. It does slow down in a few areas and could have used some slight editing, but it wasn't anything too hard to get past. The tone is completely different from The Girl With All The Gifts, which I didn't view as a bad thing, but if you're looking for more of that style of novel, you will probably be disappointed.

Overall, I liked this book and look forward to more from this author. Only the slightly slow pacing in some areas caused me to knock it down to 4 stars.

Sixth Sense meets Orange is the New Black!
By cgsolano
I read this book because I loved The Girl With All The Gifts (TGWATG) --which I personally liked better than Fellside. Fellside is some sort of Sixth Sense meets Orange is the New Black. It took me a while to get into anxiously reading the book. I thought it took a long time to set up the characters, but that's just me. Some really good and unexpected twists. Carey is a great storyteller!

Review
Praise for Jessica Darling's It List:* "This latest installment in the perils of Pineville Junior High can be described in just the same way as describing its title character: hilarious, sweet, and smart. This is a fun but not fluffy book; instead it provides some insightful truths about the heartbreaks of growing up, while maintaining a wicked sense of humor."―VOYA (starred review)

"Readers meeting Jessica for the first time will be charmed by this authentic and funny girl who makes well-tread territory feel as new as a pair of first-day-of-school sneakers."―Publishers Weekly

"Jessica is a winning heroine, and as she stumbles and fumbles (and literally falls flat on her face), readers will laugh alongside her and, yes, cheer as she comes into her authentic self."―Booklist

"Told in the hilariously authentic voice of a preteen girl, this book will have readers laughing out loud at Jessica's high jinks, especially her disastrous stint as the school's mascot."―School Library Journal
