Oliver Tolliver lives all alone and has one of everything in his little house-one table, one chair, one apple, and one pear. To him, it's perfect. But when he invites Peggoty Small over to admire his arrangement, he finds she has quite another opinion. She feels his one-of-each house leaves no room for anyone else! Suddenly Oliver sees she's right, and he finds a pair for every single thing in his house. In the end he realizes that sharing makes room for friends. As only she can, Mary Ann Hoberman deftly crafts a simple, comforting story that speaks to every child's experience. Accompanied by Marjorie Priceman's bold, colorful illustrations, this picture book is destined to become a story time favorite.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2. Oliver Tolliver thinks that his "one-of-each" treasures are perfect until he realizes that something is missing?a friend. A singular picture book with a bouncy text and comical animal characters.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
An exuberant story in singsong about the pleasures of sharing with friends, from the author of The Seven Silly Eaters (p. 223). Oliver Tolliver, perhaps an Airedale terrier, thinks he has the perfect home, for he has one of everything he needs. He invites a small gray tabby cat, Peggoty Small, in to admire his accoutrements, but is dismayed that she finds his arrangements less than inviting. Oliver makes haste to equip his house more hospitably and is soon sharing his happy home not only with Peggoty but with a whole party of new friends as well. The simple story is borne along in lighthearted verse and busy, full-bleed paintings; children will enjoy touring Oliver's ``little old tumbledown house,'' with its riot of colors, jumble of patterns, curvaceous furniture, and dancing perspectives. Finding all the things Oliver adds to his house to make it fit for two is a pleasant challenge. (Picture book. 4-7) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Absolutely one of my favorite books for children.
By Lisa Ebeling
There's not a single syllable too many in the entire book, and if you've tried to write poetry yourself, you know how difficult this is to achieve. I love books written in rhyme, and this charming book flows beautifully and easily, telling the story of a dog named Oliver Tolliver and his little "one-of-each" house and lifestyle. Oliver reminds me of my confirmed-bachelor/hermit husband when he and I first met: living quietly alone in his own neatly-ordered space and discovering the empty spots in his heart and house that could be pleasantly filled by the companionship of others. At first Oliver is quite surprised to hear Peggoty's opinion of his 'bachelor-pad':
"A guest in your one-of-each house does not fit. It's made for one person and you, sir, are it! It's perfect for one, sir, if he's on his own, And so, sir, I'll go, sir, and leave you alone."
but then he realizes Peggoty's assessment is true, so he quickly outfits his house to accommodate guests. Then Peggoty sees the improvements:
"And when she arrived, she cavorted with glee And she said with delight, 'Why, you did this for ME!'"
Oliver becomes friends with an entire group of animals who come over to socialize, and he is quite happy to have learned that sharing is the key to happiness:
"And he found as he nibbled the peach, pear, and plum That they all tasted better when each one had some And that even though each person's piece might be small, Eating with friends was the best thing of all."
This book is filled cover-to-cover with incredibly bright (what I call "color-block") illustrations. This is a favorite book of mine--and of my children. It's a book that I enjoy reading aloud every time they ask for it, even when they want to hear it three times in a row.
My only disappointment with this book is that in our second copy of it (which I purchased through a school book club) the illustrations are not nearly as bright. I wonder if this is standard for paperbooks printed for mass-distribution.
Treat your kids to a fun book with cute illustrations, and treat yourself to a book that you'll love to re-read for years!

This is an absolutely excellent children's book!!
By A Customer
After stumbling upon this book in the bookstore, I've found myself buying it for all the kids in my life. It is a fantastic, engaging story about sharing with vibrant illustrations. It is a MUST for all children. Kids ask to read it over and over again.

A pleasure both to look at and to read aloud
By Carol S.
In this terrific picture book, extrovert feline Peggoty Small teaches doggie loner Oliver Tolliver that everything is better when shared with a friend. The theme is simple and perfectly suited to the typical egocentric, "everything is mine" toddler. Best of all, the message is delivered in such a charming package. If you like the rhythm & rhyme of Dr. Seuss, you're bound to enjoy the clever verse and wordplay -- without the nonsense words that put some people off Seuss. If you like Matisse, you'll love the illustrations: lots of bright colors & patterns, slightly skewed perspective, and plenty of whimsy. A great book for any young child, particularly one who is having trouble sharing or who has just become a big brother or sister.

Nothing Beats The Old School Swimsuit Look.
By Fusionwavestarprism
Lisara will make Iria's special barrier spell called 'Lyngvi' disappear by using up most of her Spirit Energy which keeps her away from Ryosuke. Lyngvi's a very potent high level magic spell that completely blocks out whoever gets encased inside it and people from the outside world can't break through it or see through it. Only a Grim Reaper with high Spirit Energy can break it. It was cool to see Iria and Lisara's Grim Reaper battle forms once again and Qru will even join the fight.

Crazy artwork of Ryosuke having fun with Lisara's body will be shown in it's purest form when he gets put into a Lyngvi barrier. Lisara can't make the spell go away this time, She will need to find where Ryosuke stands and drain his Spirit Energy so that she can destroy the force field and finds herself unable to break free with Qru trying to help out while Ryosuke can't believe his luck with Lisara. Hot artwork of Lisara and Qru.

You will enjoy the swimsuit contest and see who wins. Qru looked pretty good in her swimsuit. Iria does get a loud roar from the crowd with her look. Mina also looked good in her swimsuit. Lisara stunned the entire school with her look that came from Ryosuke, Which was the old school look with a cap that brought out her attractiveness in a different way. You will like how the story ends.

After reading the main story comes to a close, You will get to read two short stories that are called-

1. Grim Reapers And Bras- This story was when Lisara and Iria were younger at their school back then. Very good artwork of them and you will find out how they became enemies.

2. Grim Reapers And Valentine's Day- Lisara wants to know from Ryosuke about how she can make a boy happy on Valentine's Day with chocolate because Lisara has no experience with it. Ryosuke will think how Qru, Mina, Iria and Lisara would look by giving him chocolate on Valentine's Day and the artwork and dialogue of these events will blow your mind.

I really enjoyed reading all 5 volumes.

I got this book from 'RightStufAnime' and comes new and factory sealed.

Ages 18 and higher can read this.

A curious concluding volume
By Robert Fisher
This volume was quite good, featuring clashes between Lisara and Iria with Ryosuke caught in the middle. Qru gets herself some nice scenes too. Besides the main story. there are two short pieces. One gives us a look at Lisara and Iria as young schoolmates at Grim Reaper School. It's quite a tale of just how their rivalry got underway. The second story concerns Lisara and Ryosuke on Valentine's Day, which in Japan is the day girls give chocolates to boys they like. It provides some delightful mutual awkwardness. I was saddened to learn that this is the concluding volume but I must say that the ending was curious; it did not feel like a wrap-up. Could it be that we will see Lisara, Ryosuke and company returning at some future date?

Manhattan has many secrets. Some are older than the city itself.

The city sleeps. Selene DiSilva walks her dog along the banks of the Hudson. She is alone -- just the way she likes it. She doesn't believe in friends, and she doesn't speak to her family. Most of them are simply too dangerous.

In the predawn calm, Selene finds the body of a young woman washed ashore, gruesomely mutilated and wreathed in laurel. Her ancient rage returns. And so does the memory of a promise she made long ago -- when her name was Artemis.

"The Immortals is a lively re-imagining of classical mythology with an engaging premise, a page-turning plot, and an eye for the arresting and uncanny in contemporary urban life."
--Deborah Harkness, New York Times bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches

The Immortals is the first book in the exciting new Olympus Bound trilogy. Look out for the sequel, Winter of the Gods, out in February 2017!

Fantastic Modernization of Greek Myths
By Books31
The Immortals takes the stories of the Olympian Gods puts them in a situation where their powers have faded to almost nothing, adds a murder mystery centered around an ancient cult's ritual, and add a splash of romance to top it off.

Jordanna Max Brodsky has done a suburb job of bringing life to the ancient myths. Retelling the myths of old through the eyes of Artemis, thus shading each of these great and known stories in a different light. On top of these re-telling though, Brodsky has done a fantastic job recreating the Gods, showing the gods base cores as they would have changed over the millennia. Some fading, some going mad, while others retained small bursts of energy (Hermes and Dionysus), because of the reverence and worship of alcohol, drinking, communication and thievery (because being dishonest or getting drunk has never gone out of style).

Through all of this, Brodsky weaves a compelling story of treachery, loss and love, that is absolutely packed with nail biting adventure. As the plot thickens so too do the stakes, until readers are stuck feverishly reading until the wee hours of the morning trying to find out what happens next. Of course, to top off the action and ever building suspense, The Immortals is packed to the gills with shocking surprises that even experienced readers wont see coming.

All in all, I throughly enjoyed The Immortals. I thought it was well written, had a fantastic balance of action, mystery and budding romance, and was a real page turner. Overall The Immortals is a real treat.

One of my top fave books! Great fiction (with Greek mythology) must-read!
By yaratr
This deserves way more than five stars! After having hundreds of Greek myth retellings, it was so refreshing to read one told in a new light. Selene, no longer the goddess Artemis, is fighting the fading of the gods by keeping true to some of her old epithets, such a Defender of the Innocent. She's a vigilante in modern day Manhattan, keeping women safe. Selene 's dog sniffs a dead body in the river, dressed up in an Ancient Greek chiton, thus starting this high stakes thriller where more innocent women's lives, not to mention Selene, and her begrudgingly new friend Theo's lives too are at stake. Very innovative and impossible to put down- a page-turner from the start. Can't wait for the next book!

Amazing thriller about the Greek Gods in Manhattan!
By nychiker
Wow, The Immortals is absolutely amazing! I couldn't put it down, a page turner from start to finish. Selene (Artemis) is such a great heroine. An unapologetic bad-ass. I love having a woman who calls men on their crap, and won't let them get away with mistreating women. The romance was great. The male lead brings in some great humor to lighten the mood. I also loved the way it worked the myths in, and I really learned a lot of interesting details about the classics. They were woven in to feel necessary and motivated without distracting from the narrative. There is a glossary at the end that you might find useful. I didn't realize until I finished! Overall, just everything I could ask for in a book.

Hornblower and the

April 1803. The Peace of Amiens is breaking down. Napoleon is building ships and amassing an army just across the Channel. Horatio Hornblower-who, at age twenty-seven, has already distinguished himself as one of the most daring and resourceful officers in the Royal Navy-commands the three-masted Hotspur on a dangerous reconnaissance mission that evolves, as war breaks out, into a series of spectacular confrontations. All the while, the introspective young commander struggles to understand his new bride and mother-in-law, his officers and crew, and his own "accursed unhappy temperament"-matters that trouble him more, perhaps, than any of Bonaparte's cannonballs.

From Publishers Weekly
MacNee (The Avengers and A View to a Kill) is a superb choice to read this ripping yarn—the third in Forester's expert and exciting series about a young naval officer who rises rapidly through the ranks to become one of England's heroes in the battles against Napoleon's huge fleet of fast and formidably armed frigates. MacNee is perfect as the young Horatio Hornblower, who listeners meet on his wedding day in 1803. The couple's romance succumbs to history as the dastardly French prepare to attack. With the possible exception of Patrick O'Brian, nobody else writes about sea battles with the perfect control of Forester, and MacNee uses all his acting skills to keep the action moving. A few sound effects might have been in order during the fighting scenes, but one can't have everything. A Back Bay paperback. (Aug.)

One of the very best Hornblower novels. Outstanding!
By Roger J. Buffington
This is the third Hornblower novel by way of continuity, following "Mr. Midshipman Hornblower" and "Lieutenent Hornblower" and it is one of the very best Hornblower novels. Horatio Hornblower has been promoted to Commander, and is now captain (not a Post-Captain) of HMS Sloop Hotspur, which is given the important duty of monitoring the French port of Brest. Captain Hornblower and First Lieutenant Bush are now fully developed as characters, and their long association together takes form in this novel. Here, Hornblower is now gaining a reputation as an unusually competent and resourceful officer, as the storied Admiral Cornwallis takes Hornblower under his wing as mentor. Nonetheless, this is a time of great stress and danger for Hornblower. The British Navy is exerting every ounce of Britain's strength against Napoleon, and the British fleet is all that stands between the Corsican tyrant and world domination. Hotspur, commanded by Hornblower, is responsible for monitoring Brest, which is where Napoleon's next move against Britain is expected to first come from. Hornblower is truly "the tip of the spear." This is a great story.
"Hotspur" is one of the key Hornblower novels and I highly recommend it to Hornblower afficianados and anyone who just likes a good novel of the days of "wooden ships and iron men." By the way, it makes for a nice sequence of reading if you follow "Hotspur" with "Hornblower During the Crisis." You'll see why when you read the latter.
The Hornblower novels are in my opinion the best naval adventure series in all of literature and "Hotspur" is one of the very best of the series. What more can one say?

Good Reading
By John G. Bergin
I read the Hornblower books when I was in my early teens, read them all and than forgot them. Years later, a friend started me on the Patrick O'Brian books. Once again I got caught up in the Royal Navy and the wars with France. When I finished the last volume in November, I thought I would try the Forester books again and what a nice suprise! They were better this time. A lot of the major players (pardon the pun)are of course the same. There seems to be more action in the Hornblower books and I guess because of that the characters do not appear to be as well developed. The details that are such a big part of the Aubrey/Maturin books are not there in the Hornblower books. But after sailing with O'Brian for the last five or six years, I think I know a lot about shipboard life and because of that, it took very little imagination to fill in the parts missing in the Forester books. In all, I really enjoyed Hornblower and look forward to reading more.

The Evolution of Moral Character
By Donald Mitchell
Hornblower and the Hotspur is just the sort of book to inspire youngsters to want to do the right thing. The temptations of doing the wrong thing, of looking the other way, or of chasing the golden fleece are all present. You see Commander Hornblower dealing with these temptations, and enjoying the rewards and pains of pursuing the right course. Also, he is often rewarded for taking the time to do his homework (such as his never-ending charting of the coastal inlets in Brittany). Few modern novels create some upright and forthright heroes for young people to model themselves after.
Older fans of C.S. Forester and the Hornblower series will also be rewarded by the fascinating details of how a small sloop can successfully challenge frigates, shore batteries, and even the French army itself! If you are a sailor or have some interest in the subject, you will be richly rewarded by the many fine details that Mr. Forester provides about the special challenges of storms, the European coast, and running a long-term blockade of Europe after the Peace of Amiens breaks down in 1803.
Those who have been waiting for Hornblower to "get a life" will be pleased to see that his attachments to shore, family, and to those nearest to him increase greatly in this book. As a result, he has to think about the consequences more carefully as he faces death . . . and what will happen to others if he fails.
In a fascinating series of "almost asides" Hornblower has great problems with his personal servants in this novel. By novel's end, he has had three of them . . . each of whom has presented him with great challenges and frustrations. These scenes help establish Hornblower's lack of priority for personal comfort, and the vulnerability that can be created for you if those close to you fail to do their duties.
To me, the most rewarding part of the book came in the many sections that explored what it means to be courageous. Hornblower certainly doesn't see himself that way. In fact, in some cases he merely sees himself as having noticed the problem and having acted faster than others. In other cases, his physical weaknesses (including a propensity to seasickness) make his duty difficult. He gives himself no credit for soldiering on under the circumstances, but rather feels inferior for his vulnerability. An unfortunate incident leaves him in a quandary about whether to do his duty "by the book" or to deal with the situation with compassion. Although he unswervingly follows his compassion, he constantly upbraids himself for having done so. The message seems to be that courage is overcoming your obstacles and limitations, regardless of the price, but is not something that one should rejoice in. The term "stiff upper lip" kept coming to mind as I read this novel.
The ultimate appeal of Hornblower is that he is a slightly brighter, more determined version of "everyone" out there who ever wanted to do the right thing, make a way in the world, and build a rewarding life. His weaknesses, foibles, and doubts simply serve to make his concerns and himself real to all of us who read about him . . . and secretly yearn to keep the French bottled up in Brest by our outstanding seamanship.
If the Star Trek holodecks were really available, I'd like to create a program to be Hornblower on the Hotspur (as long as I didn't have to suffer too much from seasickness). I would certainly want to have the trustworthy Mr. Bush (from the novel) along side me.
After you finish the book, I suggest that you think of Hornblower's experiences as a metaphor for making the right choices in a career and personal life. What challenges have you found that are similar to those that Hornblower dealt with in this book? How do you think that Hornblower would have responded to these challenges? What can you learn from these "thought experiments" that could help you in the future?
When choosing among life's routes, be sure to consider the stern, rocky paths for the rewarding challenges they provide!

Herge's wartime Swiftian satire.
By darragh o'donoghue
After a string of stories loosely based on mystery/crime plots, 'The Shooting Star' initiates the formula that would become fairly standard in the Tintin books to come: the science-fiction adventure, a kind of modernist Jules Verne. A huge meteorite flying past earth splinters a large fragment which lands near the North Pole. Containing a new metal called phostlite, named after the astronomer who detected it, Tintin and Snowy join an expedition of world-class scientists to lay claim to the rock, in a ship captained by one Haddock, now unlikely President of the Society for Sober Sailors (despite smuggling crates of whiskey for the journey). Their quest, however, is pre-empted by another expedition, financed by crooked Sao Rico banker, cigar-chomping (anti-Semitic caricature?), Bohlwinkel.
The first dozen pages of 'Star' are unequalled in literature for sustaining a nightmare mood of unaccountable suspense and anxiety (appropriate given the Occupation context [1941] in which the story was written). The meteor is introduced as both a speedily growing incandescence in the night sky, and by a melting heat afflicting the usually drizzly Brussels, the tar on the roads melting, armies of rats fleeing the gutter, car-tyres popping and mad prophets pronouncing millenarian judgements. The spangled blackness of the sky is offset by the dreamlike twilight blue that illuminates the streets. When Tintin rushes to the observatory, he finds the spanking, steely modern technology run by an eccentric gaggle of Dickensian relics, all black frock-coated dodderers, running around in the vicious circles of their own self-absorption, headed by the appropriately-named, anvil-headed Phostle. When he encourages Tintin to look into the giant, cannon-priapic telescope for himself, he sees a colossal spider heading towards the planet.
No work could keep up that sweat-making momentum, and Herge wisely lets the narrative dip, mixing comedy (including Haddock's pathetic attempts to sneak a nagan, Snowy's incessant raids on the kitchen, and the sight of the world's finest minds keeling over in green-faced sea-sickness) with race-against-the-clock suspense as our heroes strive to reach the meteor, despite various chilling sabotage attempts by their rivals. The meteor itself is a creation worthy of Swift, soon erasing memories of 'The Black Island'. The affirmative faith in science that propels the action is undermined by the instabilities of the sinking meteor, with its magnified lifeforms (including flies and spiders) and exploding toadstools (among the book's many great visual effects, the best is possibly the shrinking in successive frames of our hero as the mushroom enlarges). The massive apples that knock Tintin on the head may be an ironic allusion to the great Enlightenment hero Newton, who could be said to usher in modern science, and the famous fruit in the Garden of Eden (like Adam, or Columbus, Tintin explores virgin land), a warning against the dangers of pursusing too much knowledge (earlier predicted by the decline into madness of the scientist Philippus); nature will always fight back, in ever more aggressive and distorted forms.

sureal--in a good way
By A Customer
I agree with the other reviewers before me that this episode of Tintin, is, well a little bizarre. For example, in the first few pages we learn that the world is coming to an end due to a predicted meteor that will crash into earth. One of the series strangest and most satirical character, Philippulus the Prophet makes an all too brief appearance with his words of doom for all the sinners of this world. Well, by morning of the next day, the world has not ended. Life goes on. The real adventure begins when Tintin, Capt. Haddock and a group of international scientists go on a quest to beat out their competition and to be the first ones to find a piece of the fragmented meteor that fell into the arctic oceans. It's basically an old fashioned space race but in cartoon. Personally, I liked this episode. I think it's charmingly weird--like reading a dream because it's full of imaginative stuff: armageddon, Tintin parachuting onto a boiling hot rock, spiders that grow into the size of cars, exploding pokadoted mushrooms from outer space.... Like I said, The Shooting Star could very be the name of a painting by Salvador Dali. Still, in general, this episode is quite worthy because you do have some pretty funny and exciting moments--which is, of course, the essence of Tintin.

Very good

I just love this series. It’s just plain enjoyable, no matter what’s happening. And the twists are just lovely.

Most of this volume contained the rest of the cricket arch. I will say I’m glad the game is over, because I’m not a sports person, but it was still an enjoyable arch to read, even if I still have no idea how the game really works. The bonus chapter at the end, where Toboso talks about her researching cricket, was also very entertaining, though.

During the reprieve from cricket, and the celebration, though, I had to admire the artwork. Toboso does perfect stills like perfect actual pictures. Capturing the moment someone falls or laughs or dances. There were a couple pages of this, and they were just really pretty.

Then we get to a big momentous reveal in the case of the missing boys. It ends up being the continuation (or spin-off, maybe) of an earlier case, which I wasn’t expecting. I don’t know why, but I thought we were moving onto something completely new--not that I'm disappointed.

Still, the cliffhanger was rather exciting. I’m still not sure what’s going on (and while Sebastian seems to know, I don’t think Ciel does), but I definitely look forward to seeing how it wraps up in the next volume (assuming it doesn’t continue into the one after that). And I like the character that showed up, although I’m wary of what he brings.

Good continuation of this manga.
By Karissa Eckert
This was a good volume in the Black Butler series. This book continues the storyline started a few books ago where Ciel and Sebastian are under cover at a Boys School where students have been disappearing. While this hasn’t been my favorite storyline it has been well done and I am still enjoying it.

As with previous volumes the illustration is top notch and I am really enjoying it.

The first half of the manga deals with the cricket match. I honestly found this to be a bit boring, but some of it was funny. The rest of the book builds to the unveiling of who the Headmaster is and it is quite the unveiling.

Overall this was a decent continuation of the Black Butler series. Most of this book deals with the cricket match, which wasn’t all that entertaining to me. However, the Midnight Tea Party and the unveiling of the Headmaster was quite good. I would recommend this manga series to those who enjoy paranormal manga with a good dash of mystery.

This is just as good as all the other volumes

This is just as good as all the other volumes, I was most certainly not disappointed (except, you know, when it ended)! The plot-twist at the end although I knew it beforehand was still incredibly well done and worth the read!
