Journal of Exposition

If you've ever wanted to learn the younger side of Celestia and Luna this is the MLP book for you. Hard core fans will be able to piece together history of Equestria and remember key events from Hearth's Warming Eve. With the first section of the journal being the diary entries of both sisters from their own perspective and the second being the diary entries made by the Mane 6 from Season 4 of MLP:Friendship is Magic.

Basic Events Outlined

(Spoiler Free)
In the journal you begin with the coronation of Elsa & Anna after a brief explanation of how they became the Princesses of Equestria, I mean Celestia & Luna. Afterwards you hear about how the sisters picked the location for their castle. It then tells of how Luna befriends a manticore and how the castle is constructed. It then tells of a encounter with a certain prissy unicorn princess. You then learn of Celestia's love of books and Luna's more adventurous side where she discovers a herd of zebras. The next major conflict comes when the two sisters conflict over air space with griffons. Then take a trip to the Crystal Empire where the Crystal Heart has been stolen by a dragon. Finally journey through Celestia and Luna rising and lower both sun and moon as well as finding out about themselves.

(Spoilers Abound)
Approached by Star Swirl the Bearded directly after the events of Hearth's Warming Eve, which led to the founding of Equestria, Luna and Celie (as Luna affectionately calls her sister in her entries) were chosen to rule over this new land. The only reason the entries give as to why they were chosen was that they are alicorns; the combination of Earth, Pegasus and Earth ponies. It also introduces the two sisters as blank flanks who have yet to find their special calling in life. The sisters claim that while they are presumably decades old (Luna says she is many times older than Princess Platinum), they do not have their cutie marks because alicorns age differently than a regular pony. Nothing is said about their parents or who told them such information. You then learn about the fear and worry both sisters have over becoming princesses but they soon get excited and see themselves more as protectors of the land rather than rulers. It also pokes fun at Luna trying to write i the Royal Canterlot Voice, from the episode Luna Eclipsed which takes place on Nightmare Night, where Luna then shifts into normal writing mode saying her and Celie use to play together using that voice. After searching the lands of Equestria both sisters agree to build their castle in the Everfree Forest, not only because it's mysterious but because they also see the Tree of Harmony which Star Swirl informs them is indeed the tree from legend. Luna accounts how she's the one who wanted the weird trap doors, the paintings without eyes and the hooves holding torches. Later Celie is over joyed about the idea of a library with a secret area for her to hide away in. During the construction of the castle a group of ponies looking for building materials go missing. Luna rushes to find them and encounters a mantircore. Upon failed attempts at defeating the enemy, Celie comes to her side. After subduing the beast with the aid of Star Swirl, the manticore breaks down and cries. Luna, much like Fluttershy, is able to understand the crying of the animal and realizes the ponies were taking materials from his house not even knowing it was his. This leads to the befriending of the manticore as well as many other Forest creatures by Luna. Once the castle is completed, King Bullion the king of the unicorns and his daughter Princess Platinum visit. The Princessis hardly amused by the idea of Celie and Luna ruling over them and states they should have asked her to rule. She even calls the pair of sisters blank flanks and can't believe she is to be ruled over by two ponies who don't even have their cutie marks yet. Luna then uses her knowledge of the castle to her advantage and using the Canterlot Voice combined with a trap door and Melvin the manticore, scares the Princess into submission. With Princess Platinum now for the two sisters' rule, she has tapestries (the ones Rarity later want to restore) created by unicorns to adorn the walls of the castle. Next the rest of the leaders and sidekicks from Hearth's Warming Eve come to visit the castle (Clover the Clever, Star Swirl, Smart Cookie, Private Pansy and Chancellor Puddinghead) It's also revealed Star Swirl is working on time travel spells and hopes the two sisters can help him with it. Melvin the Manticore then tells Luna of a forbidden area in the Everfree Forest. Luna quickly investigates and stumbles upon zebras who all talk in rhyme just like Zecora. At first they fear this winged beast is a manticore. After telling them she is an alicorn and a princess and ruler of this land no less, the zebras tell Luna of how manticores use to attack the peaceful zebras so using potions and spells the zebras were able to make a protective shell to keep the manticores away. Thus the manticores gave up and left them alone which turned that area of the forest into a forbidden place for manticores. Star Swirl then asks Luna to attempt to move the stars which proves difficult and Luna fails at her attempt. But Star Swirl has finally gotten a age and time spell mixed up and travels through time and ages back to a younger point in his life. Upon later entries, Celie asks Star Swirl about the Star symbol on the tree of Harmony and if they'll ever meet this pony (Twilight obviously) and Star Swirl gets a gleam in his eye hinting that they will. Conflict soon arises again when during some flying with Commander Hurricane, Celie and Luna bump into griffons. The griffon leader Gregor the griffon states that their original peace treaty with the pegasus ponies about air space borders is null and void because that was before the land was Equestria. After a threat of war between the griffins and pegasus, Luna consults Melvin and he informs her that griffins have a sweet tooth and that Gregor loves eclairs and that talking in rhyme like a zebra might confuse Gregor just like it had the manticores when they found the zebras. Luna then has Star Swirl make some eclairs and in her Canterlot Voice she speaks in rhyme to Gregor and after eating the eclairs he admits defeat and the peace treaty over airspace is reinstated. With that war avoided another one brews in the Crystal Empire with the crystal heart stolen by a dragon. Princess Amore calls upon the protectors of Equestria to aid her in talking to the dragon. The crystal heart had actually been mined out of the Crytalline Mountain which had been the home of the dragon. He had been sleeping at the time and when he later found out the ponies had taken crystals from his territory is when he stole the crystal heart. Celie tries to reason with him that it's important and the Crystal Empire will fall without it, he treats it as a mere trinket. Celie then uses her own Canterlot Royal speaking voice and scares the dragon into submission. In the last few entries of the diary Luna and Celie awaken to a dark sky and discover that the unicorns have been sacrificing their magic to bring day and night. You see, it takes 6 uncirosn to raise and set the sun and moon. After doing it for a while the unicorn loses its magic forever. Star Swirl had been the only unicorn ever to be able to raise and lower it without losing his magic. But upon that day they had run out of adult unicorns and Star Swirl attempted to do it himself. Failing his beard turns from brown to grey and he loses his magic. Luna and Celie are then informed that Alicorns have a different type of magic and are actually made stronger by raising and lowering the sun and moon. Upon trying, they both succeed with Luna lowering the moon and Celie raising the sun. Rejuvenated by this, the sisters are able to restore the magic of the unicorns and finally obtain their cutie marks. Celie gains a sun on her flank and Luna a crescent moon. Luna tells how she now has a purpose and can not wait to do it again and is happy she can do this for as long as she's princess... (Until she becomes Nightmare Moon of course...)

The Journal of the Two Sisters concludes there with the next section being the Journal of Friendship which are the entries made by the Mane 6 over the course of Season 4. The book ends with a few pages of blank lines to write your own stories of friendship.

Overall the book is written to be an easy read book. I believe the biggest word it uses is amalgamation but in general the writing is not complicated and can be read by younger kids (although they might not fully understand it). While not the most intersting or well written book for older kids, if you're a fan of the show then you'll love it.

The book is wrapped in a removable sleeve (jacket?) which is the bottom half of the picture as shown in the item listing. Underneath is the words the Journal of the Two Sisters with the back being the crest of the two sisters circling the moon and sun as seen in the show. Each character has their own stationary styled pages and different hoof-writing (hand-writing). The embellishments of the pages (borders, little bits of art) make it fun to look at and makes it feel more like a journal/diary.

It's a fine read for younger kids and fans of the show and a nice cosplay item as well because of how its made. It's a good pick up to read so 10/10 would read again.

Enjoyable, good world building, but INCOMPLETE PRODUCT!

I got the Kindle Version, which is cheaper, but for a good reason. I just learned from a friend who got the physical book that my kindle version is abridged! The physical book includes all the entries that the Mane 6 made during season 4 (along with Pinkie Pie going off on a Pinkie ramble that is apparently hilarious), but the Kindle version doesn't include any of that. So, if you are wanting to save a bit of money and have the book be more portable, beware, for you won't get the complete product!

So great! Its everything I had hoped for, as an avid brony/pony collector, I love this, it looks straight out of the show and even shares a quote spoken in the show, which I found rather cool. It's not quite as long as I had had thought, which I'd say could be the only relal drawbck, and a small one at that, overall, awesome, would recommend to any fellow brony/pony collector out there.

Great Escapist Entertainment

Those Who Wish Me Dead is great for an evening of escapist entertainment. While there is a healthy amount of drama, suspense, and thrills, this book is a smooth and easy read. It is complex enough to keep the reader guessing, but not so deep as to require a tremendous amount of mental energy. It's the perfect book for setting aside obligations and losing oneself for a few hours of fighting for survival in the Montana wilderness.

The characters in this book are excellent. Jace is immediately likable. He is a wonderful combination of self-doubt, courage, and initiative. Even though he shares the lead with several characters, Jace pretty much carries this book. While most of the remaining characters are trying to protect Jace, there is no forced sympathy or attempt to make the reader feel sorry for Jace. He's simply a very likable kid from the beginning, which lays the groundwork for building nice relationships between Jace and the other characters. Though all the protagonists are quite likable and well developed, the former hotshot, Hannah, is a gem. Her backstory is fantastic and adds a wonderful depth to the overall story. The villains are also well constructed, with multifaceted personalities and unique qualities that make them not only worthy opponents, but chilling characters.

The setting for Those Who Wish Me Dead is awesome and is described with enough detail to capture the reader's imagination without bogging down the story. It's easy to visualize the beautiful mountains, the difficult terrains and the encroaching forest fire. Eventually, the setting becomes an integral part of the story, morphing into another character, which is on one hand a friend, but on the other hand a foe.

Not many books truly surprise me, but this one did--as in jaw on the floor surprised. There are a couple of very well executed plot twists I never saw coming.

Every year I impatiently wait for Michael Koryta's next book. While I wish he would write faster, I appreciate the time and care that is put into each story. Those Who Wish Me Dead is well research, carefully constructed, beautifully written, and very well executed. This is a solid story from start to finish that is simply fun to read and one I highly recommend.

Great characterization

I sort of fell into this book by reading about "books you shouldn't miss" from 2015. This plot was clever and the characterization of the antagonists was most interesting. It really kept my attention. The only reason I didn't give it a five is because I deplore violence.

Hergé, one of the most famous Belgians in the world, was a comics writer and artist. The internationally successful Adventures of Tintin are his most well-known and beloved works. They have been translated into 38 different languages and have inspired such legends as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. What I consider Tintin's greatest adventure when he goes to the Moon

Of the seven volumes that make up the "Adventures of Tintin," Volume 5 is my favorite. It includes both the first story by Hergé that I ever read with "Land of Black Gold," and also my favorite two-part Tintin adventure when out young intrepid reporter, Snowy, and their friends head for the moon. I realize the science fiction aspects of that particular pair of tales makes them atypical Tintin adventures, but Hergé's attention to detail makes the story stand out quite well, even in comparison to science fiction films that were putting men on the moon at that time.

Because "Land of Black Gold" was the first Adventure of Tintin I ever read it has a special place in my heart. It seems that all around the world cars (or lighters) using petrol are exploding. In a storyline eerily prescient of what would happen decades later with the rise of OPEC, the world is on the brink of an oil crisis. In the Middle East the evil Sheik Bab El Ehr tries to overthrow Sheik Ben Kalish Ezab, so Tintin heads to the Middle East to save the day. Throwing a monkey wrench into the proceedings, in addition to the omnipresent evil agents and hapless Thompson brothers, is Abdullah, son of Sheik ben Kalish Ezab, who pulls a constant string of practical jokes on everybody in sight (Historical Note: This is where the Thom(p)sons first develop their habit of becoming extremely hairy at inopportune moments).

I always think of Tintin as constituting "realistic absurdity," which reflects the way our hero plunges on despite the lunacy around him, which exists mainly in the characters rather than the situation. This delicate balance seems to be reflected even in Herge's artwork, where his "clear-line" style combines iconic characters with unusually realistic backgrounds, appeals to me. I also admire his remarkable restraint with Snowy, who "talks" less than any other "talking" dog in comic book history. These are truly timeless tales (More Historical Notes: "Tintin in the Land of Black Gold" was the adventure in progress in "Le Vingtieme Siecle" when German troops invaded Belgium on May 10, 1940. Herge suspended the story for eight years and actually began another adventure, "The Crab with the Golden Claws," in the interim, which was published in "Le Soir," one of the few newspapers authorized during the German occupation).

"Destination Moon" ("Objectif Lune") gives a detailed account on the preparation and the launching of the expedition to the Moon from the Sprodj Atomic Research Center in Syldavaia using the rocket designed by Professor Calculus. This involves the Thom(p)sons in what they think is Syldavian national dress and a whole bunch of bear clubs who love honey sandwiches. Of course the mission is in danger from enemy spies from Klow trying to thwart the mission, so there is some political intrigue and danger mixed in with the science fiction (and danger). This Tintin adventure has one of my favorite sequences in the entire series and it was not the cliffhanger ending with Tintin and the crew heading to the moon. It comes when Captain Haddock dismisses the preparations and accuses Calculus of "acting the goat." The normal placid professor goes off the deep end and drags the captain to show him the spaceship destined for the moon, demanding to know if that is what the good captain means by "acting the goat." The worm finally turning is one of those great moments you cherish in a series because it has been so long in coming.

What makes "Explorers on the Moon" ("On a Marche Sur La Lune") so fascinating is the documentary detail that Herge infuses into the story as Tintin walks on the moon (where he declares: "I've walked a few steps!...For the first time n the history of mankind there is an EXPLORER ON THE MOON!"). I cannot think of a 1950s science fiction film that predicts as accurately what happened when Apollo 11 went to the moon a decade and a half later. One of the chief charms of Herge's artwork has always been the way his caricature drawings of Tintin and friends are contrasted by the realistic backgrounds, and this artistic style achieves its apex when we see the spaceship approaching the moon. "Explorers on the Moon" would work as a straight-forward first man on the moon type story, but, of course, in Herge's hands it becomes so much more. Together these volumes constitute Tintin's greatest adventure if for no other reason than how can you top being the first man on the moon?

Nice, but too compact

As a longtime fan of the Tintin series, I've long been frustrated by my inability to find good copies in the States. I think the hard-bound, full-size editions of the Tintin books hold up the best to wear and tear by eager children, and present the images as they were meant to be seen.

This series therefore is a mixed blessing. It's easily available and hard-bound, yes, and having three volumes in one book is a convenience of sorts. But I don't like the reduction in size: the images are too tiny for young or old eyes, and the beautiful cover illustrations are reduced to the size of postage stamps on the cover.

In short: this is a decent stopgap, far better than the black and white multi-volume sets that were circulating some years back, but get the full-size hardbound editions if you can find them.

A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage

Volume 5: Land of Black Gold (1951), Destination Moon (1953), Explorers on the Moon (1954). This is the fifth instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.

Land of Black Gold makes little use of Captain Haddock (it actually took form before The Crab With the Golden Claws) and is, subjectively of course, the weakest of all the Tintin adventures created after Tintin in America.

The third of the three double adventures, Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon show an amazingly detailed lunar effort, 15 years before the real moon landing, using Syldavia vs. its communist-style rival Borduria (see King Ottokar's Sceptre) as the backdrop. We see a side of Calculus that we had not suspected, a great deal of slapstick from Haddock, highly convincing moonscapes, somewhat drab colours however, but an effective layout; the moonscapes are outstanding. Tintin's friendship with Haddock requires a little tough love. Great stories, and yet exceeded by the last two in the preceding volume and the three in Volume 6.

Along with Mickey Mouse and Asterix, Tintin is one of the world's most recognizable cartoon characters. If you haven't read any of his adventures, you are missing a real pleasure. The clean, crisp art style that defines modern European comics is almost entirely the influence of Hergé. Considered to be one of Hergé's masterworks, Tintin in Tibet is a great book for both old and new fans of Tintin. It is compelling, exciting, and spiritually rewarding in the way that the best comics stories can be.

My favorite Tintin

This album was first published in 1960. It is my favorite Tintin. Tintin has a vivid dream in which his friend Tchang is in serious danger. They soon find out that his friend was on a plane that crashed in the Himalayas. There were no survivors reported, but Tintin is still convinced that Tchang is alive. Tintin and Captain Haddock flies to India and then they go to the Nepalese/Tibetan border. The adventure that follows is gripping and full of mystery and it has some great humor. The cold and harsh Himalayan Mountains provides nearly insurmountable challenges and both strange and dangerous things will happen.

Despite the hardships Tintin forges ahead against all odds and against all advice. This story is a little bit slower and more philosophical than most other Tintin adventures, and it includes some paranormal phenomena. However, it is still exciting and gripping, and the humor is superb. I always get a good laugh out of this book no matter how many times I re-read it. The story is very much about the human spirit, hope, and the power of compassion. One thing that stayed with me forever was the lonely cry of the Yeti.

This is my favorite Tintin adventure because it is more than just an adventure. It was also my favorite Tintin album when I was a kid. However, younger children may like "Blue Lotus" or the "The Crab with the Golden Claws" better. I would recommend this album for adults and mature children before any other Tintin album, with the slight reservation that it is an untypical Tintin album and that you may also want to read a couple of the other albums. I should say that I loved the Tintin books as a kid and I still like them, and so does my American kids (I am Swedish). In fact my American X-Box and Wii playing kids read them all the time and like them even more than I did.

Finally I would like to list all the Tintin albums in order from my favorite to the one I liked the least. I will make this list into a list mania list next but put it here for easy access.

(1) Tintin in Tibet (5 stars). It was published 1960. It is my favorite Tintin. Tintin's friend Tchang (from Blue Lotus) is lost in a plane crash in Tibet. Everyone thinks he is dead, but not Tintin, who sets out to find him against all odds. It contains adventure, humor, and mystery; however, it is also about the human spirit, and compassion. Therefore it is also a very inspiring and thought provoking adventure.

(2) Blue Lotus (5 stars). This is Herge's first master piece; it is one of my favorites. This Tintin adventure from 1934 takes place in 1931 but is still the second best Tintin (after Tintin in Tibet) as far as I am concerned. Tintin is fighting Opium gangs in China when Japan invades. This adventure is dark, scary, exciting and fun. It is also a history lesson to a certain extent.

(3) Flight 714 (5 stars). This book was published in 1968. Tintin and his friends are invited to fly in the private jet of the billionaire Lazlo Careidas. The private jet is hijacked and they are taken by their kidnappers to a very mysterious Island. This adventure is filled with surprises, humor, it is fast paced and exciting, and is therefore one of my favorites.

(4) The Crab with the Golden Claws (5 stars). This was the first Tintin I read as a kid (in Swedish). It was also the first Tintin movie I saw. This is the book where Tintin met Captain Haddock for the first time. Just like the other later works by Herge it is exciting, and well drawn, but this is one is also very funny. It will make you and your kids laugh out loud.

(5) The seven Crystal Balls (5 stars). This Tintin published 1948, is eerie, mysterious, and exciting. It is the first one of a series of two, the second being "Prisoners of the Sun". In this adventure the members of an expedition that investigated the tomb of Rascar Capac an Inca King, become sick with a strange horrible disease. The mummy taken from the tomb mysteriously vanishes (escapes?) during a fierce thunderstorm.

(6) Prisoners of the Sun (5 stars). This is the second book of a series of two. Tintin and company end up in Peru. They save a boy Zorrino from Peruvian racists. Zorrino guides them to the Inca Empire which still exists underground in the Jungle. Towards the end Tintin saves himself and his company by using his knowledge of a coming solar eclipse. It was later plagiarized by Mel Gibson in Apocalypto.

(7) The Castafiore Emerald (5 stars). This adventure was published 1963. It is absolutely the funniest of them all. It is filled with a lot of good humor. However, to get all the jokes you need to be familiar with Tintin and Captain Haddock already. So I would not recommend this as your first Tintin.

(8) The Red Sea Sharks (5 stars). This adventure was written in 1958. Tintin stumbles into an organization selling African slaves (slavery still existed in the Middle East and Africa in 1958). A lot of old crooks from other books show up here, including Captain Allan, Rastapopolous, Dr. Muller, etc. This book is intensely exciting and full of action and is therefore one of my favorites.

(9) Tintin and the Picaros (5 stars). This adventure published 1976 is full of fun and adventure. Castafiore is being held by General Tapioca innocently accused of plotting against him. Well if you know Castafiore you now feel sorry for the poor old dictator.

(10) Explorers of the Moon (5 stars). Written 1954 this is the second book in a series of two. This book is a lot more exciting and fun compared to the first (Destination moon). The movie is, however, better than the comic book (they are the same but this comic makes a good movie). However, reading this science fiction style comic book is a lot of fun.

(11) Land of the Black Gold (4 stars). This book was published in 1950 (original version 1948). It takes place in the middle east and is about oil, war, and the fight against criminals like Dr. Muller (German villains were no longer taboo). Prince Abdullah the son of the Emir of the Arab Emirate of Khemed is kidnapped and Tintin and company sets out to rescue him.

(12) Red Rackham's Treasure (4 stars). This is the second book in a series of two, the first one being "The secret of the Unicorn". In this adventure Tintin and Captain Haddock goes on an expedition to find the treasure of Sir Francis Haddock. It is in this book we meet Professor Calculus for the first time. His underwater machine turns out to be invaluable, even though Tintin and Captain Haddock at first reject it.

(13) The Secret of the Unicorn (4 stars). This adventure was published in French 1943. This is the first book in a series of two (the second being Red Rackhams treasure). In this adventure it is discovered that Captain Haddocks forefather was a feisty sea captain who fought pirates and left a treasure behind. It is not as fast paced as many other Tintin adventures and contains a considerable amount of detective work.

(14) The Calculus Affair (4 stars). In this adventure Professor Calculus is kidnapped in Geneva and Tintin and Captain Haddock set out to save him. It turns out that Professor calculus is working on a secret weapon that the fictional country of Borduria really wants to have. It is an exciting adventure but not as humor filled and exhilarating as some of the other adventures. It was written 1956.

(15) The Cigars of the Pharaoh (4 stars). The Cigars of the Pharaoh is the first of the better Tintin books. In this adventure Tintin is on a holiday cruise but ends up traveling to Egypt and India on a dangerous adventure. It is an exciting and mysterious adventure that is not objectionable (unlike the three first ones).

(16) The broken ear (4 stars). This story from 1937 takes place in South America. Tintin fights dangerous crooks, gets caught up in political turmoil, is nearly executed, travels through the rain forest, encounters piranhas, and lives among the Arumbaya Indians. This is where Tintin meets General Alcazar for the first time. Lots of action but it is still not a top quality Tintin.

(17) King Ottokar's Sceptre (4 stars). Published in 1939 this book is an allegory for fascist aggression. In this adventure Tintin visits the mythical Kingdom of Syldavia. The leaders of Borduria, a neighboring country, plot to unseat King Muskar. They attempt to seize the symbol of the Syldavian monarchy, which is "King Ottokar's Scepter". This adventure was exciting but still not a favorite of mine.

(18) The Black Island (4 stars). FOUR STARS: This one was written 1937. It takes place in England and Scotland. I saw the movie version, and read the book in several languages. In this adventure Tintin is hunting down a gang of forgers. The drawings have a higher quality than "The broken ear" and the story flows smoothly. However, I find the story to be somewhat tedious and too British for me, and this is not one my favorites.

(19) Destination Moon (4 stars). First published 1953, this is the first book in a series of two (the second being Explorers of the moon). It is a very good concept, a sort of Tintin science fiction. However, it is not fast paced and at times tedious.

(20) Tintin and the lake of the sharks (4 stars). Published 1974 and based on a film from 1972, it is a little different than the other Tintin adventures. It is not directly written by Herge, but Herge supervised the creation of the film. The drawings are not typical either; they look like still pictures from the movie. It is also a little shorter. However, it is still a good adventure and my kids like it, so I give it four stars.

(21) The shooting star (4 stars). In this adventure (from 1941) the world comes close to annihilation when earth almost collides with a star. Tintin and Captain Haddock sets out on an expedition together with a team of international scientists to find a piece that broke off and landed in the Ocean. Well, stars are not solid and pieces don't brake off stars, but there are a lot more oddities in this unlikely story.

(22) Tintin in America (3 stars). Tintin in America" portrays America with an old fashioned European prejudice that is unrealistic and unflattering. His portrayal of the Indians is borderline racist, and the plot is essentially "gangster tries to kill Tintin, Tintin miraculously escapes" repeated a couple of dozen times. Having said that, the book is still entertaining, in its own way.

(23) The adventures of Tintin in the land of the Soviets (3 stars). This is anti-communist propaganda, which I don't mind; however, it does not make a good comic book. The drawings are also not that good. However, this comic book shows that people knew about the Soviet horrors back in the 1920's.

(24) Tintin in the Congo (3 stars). It was an exciting adventure with some interesting and fun twists. However, the quality is very far from that of the more modern Tintin books, and it is borderline racists.

Tintin and Snowy head off to Tibet to rescue Chang

Tintin and Snowy were created in 1929 by Georges Remi (a.k.a. Hergé). In 1934 Hergé met a young Chinese student, Chang Chong-Chen, at which point Tintin's creator became convinced of the importance of having a soundly built storyline and getting the facts straight. In short, Hergé started taking his soundtrack very seriously. After the Communists took over China, Hergé and Chang lost touch. In 1960 the English version of "Tintin in Tibet" was published and it was immediately clear that this was a very personal story for Hergé, who was writing about his friendship with a friend he had not seen in decades.
Tintin has a dream about Chang, the boy he made friends with in China back in the adventure of "The Blue Lotus." In the dream Tintin sees Chang lying in the snow, half buried, holding out his hands and calling to Tintin to help him. When Tintin gets a letter from Chang he is surprised at the remarkable coincidence, but then he reads in the newspaper that Chang's plane has crashed in Tibet. Tintin, convinced his friend is not dead, goes off to the land of the ice and snow to save his friend.
There are none of the traditional villains in this rather special Tintin story in which our hero is aided only by Snowy and Captain Haddock (with a brief appearance by Calculus). This is arguably the most poignant Tintin adventure, focusing on the power of loyalty and hope overcoming all obstacles and Hergé places a lot of obstacles in Tintin's way. I think what I like most about this story is about how Hergé keeps what are essentially a series of cliffhangers going and going but in a realistic manner, while still working in the series trademark humor with Snowy and the Captain. "Tintin in Tibet" is an atypical Tintin adventure, but that just makes it all the more special (By the way, in 1981 Hergé and Chang Chong-Chen were happily reunited).
"Tintin in Tibet" was recently in the news when it was announced that the Chinese translation had the story as "Dingding in Chinese Tibet." Given that Fanny Rodwell, Hergé's widwow, is reported to be a personal friend of the Dalai Lama it is not surprising that she decided not to attend the promotional ceremonies in China for the launching of the Chinese language version of Tintin (the Chinese are not publishing "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" (anti-communist) and "Tintin in the Congo" (too racist and imperialist).

Brave and loyal, Tintin to the rescue!

"Tintin in Tibet" is my first Tintin adventure. I am a librarian seeking new stories and saw this in a review. It looks like a story my older elementary students would like.

Others on the product page are long-time fans, beginning in childhood, with "Tintin in Tibet" as the favorite in the series of books written and illustrated by Herge. Not knowing anything about the back story, I will begin.

First, the book itself. It is 11 3/4 inches high and 8 3/4 inches wide with full-color illustrations on slick paper, making this a very nice looking graphic novel. The book is well worth its price. The covers of the other 24 adventures are shown on the back cover.

I'm not sure who Tintin is--maybe a teenager, or the Captain, definitely someone fond of Tintin and uncle-like, who watches out for Tintin, who in turn really doesn't need watching over. Tintin is on vacation when he learns of the plane crash of Chang, a Chinese friend his age, in the mountains of Nepal.

Tintin has a dream that Chang is alive and determines to go rescue him. Of course, the Captain goes along. Through hook and crook, they manage to put together a team to take them trekking through the mountains of Nepal to find the crash site and look for Chang. Tintin's dog Snowy also goes along. He makes me laugh with his stubborn and feisty comments. The funniest is at the beginning when he complains (in the cartoon bubbles) that his feet are going to be worn off with all this hiking on rocks. Tintin has no idea his dog has this attitude.

There are several episodes in which Tintin miraculously pulls through, along with the Captain and Snowy. Tintin is clearly a hero figure but so modest, his heroism is almost surprising. He is like a Boy Scout with courage, cleanliness, right living, and dedication to service to others. He is kind and compassionate and downright likeable. Although the Captain is a whiny complainer, he always ends up doing the right thing and thus makes himself likeable. I love his cranky faces! And Snowy! So adorable!

In addition to character positives, the book also promotes cultural exchanges in a positive light--and this back in the '60's! Geography is highlighted. This might be a graphic novel, but it contains many bubbles with words.

Teachers, librarians, parents: This is a series worth exploring, for all its positive values. Other reviewers don't recommend this as a first to buy. Please read Texas Swede's review for an excellent summary of all the Tintin books to make your decision. I will be adding several of the books to my school library, including this one!

PreSchool-Grade 1-In these companion titles, Parr celebrates characteristics of mothers and fathers, and points out differences. For instance, "Some daddies teach you how to walk Some daddies teach you how to ride a skateboard"; "Some mommies fly kites Some mommies fly planes." The simple texts are accompanied by joyful, childlike illustrations done in vibrant colors, with faces that are yellow, tan, blue, purple, and other hues; figures and objects are outlined with thick, black lines. Parents of both genders are shown working at home and holding cleaning supplies. A few pages share the same text, for example, "All daddies [or mommies] like to watch you sleep!" The books close with the statement that all mommies [or daddies] "love to kiss and hug you" and "want you to be who you are!" While these titles do not overtly address single-parent households and nontraditional families, Parr allows youngsters to see the similarities that many families share by recognizing differences.

Makes kids feel good!

I have several of Todd Parr's books. My 2 year old and 5 year old both love them. My 2 year old loves the funny pictures and fast pace. My 5 year old just feels great after we read them. They are full of silly lessons that make kids feel important.

Todd Parr books are so colorful and have great messages attached to them. This book does not disappoint. The pictures are simple and vibrant which really caught my daughter's attention. The message attached is great because it shows diversity among mothers. I recommend all of his books.

Great combination of economics and romance

In this third novel, the series really shines; we now have a general understanding of Holo and Lawrence, so no more text is necessary for character introduction. The story within this book describes an economic battle between Lawrence and a rival, intertwined with the continually developing relationship between the two main characters. This all comes together in a well-executed manner, and it offers a compelling, enjoyable conclusion. If only it wasn't another six months until the next release!

The tail of Holo and Lawrence continues...

Isuna Hasekura's skill as an author seems to age like fine wine, which is to say that each volume he releases his storytelling improves greatly. I believe after reading this volume it has shown me how skilled he is as an author to pull off previous volume.

By previous statement, what I mean is that volume three gave a sense of urgency and fast-pace, but this time around the story goes at a much slower pace. I believe this is more due to the fact that Holo and Lawrence are getting accustomed to their new understanding of each other's feelings.

The story begins with Lawrence and Holo out on the road travelling to their next destination. Diana from volume 3 has mentioned there was abbot who collected pagan legends from all over the world, and this would be the person they seek out here in volume 4 to find out more about the town of Yoitsu (Holo's home). They arrive in the small town of Tereo to find out more information as to the whereabouts of the abbey, but they are soon confronted with yet another issue that only serves to hold back any progress of Holo finding out what happened to Yoitsu. Will Lawrence and Holo once again outwit their opponent(s), or will fate finally catch up with them?

This volume also confronts an issue that has worried Lawrence since the ending of volume one. One that Lawrence fears the most about facing on his travels with Holo. You'll have to pick up this volume to find out what happens!

Beautiful Illustrations

If you are a fan of the Alice manga OR game series, this book is a must have. For me personally, having never had the chance to play any of the games, and relying mostly on the manga to get info about the characters and routes, this book was very helpful.

It focuses on one particular game, Alice in the Country of Diamonds, and has extensive character profiles, outfits, and illustrations not before released over here in the US. There are two bonus manga "chapters" at the end of the book, the first focusing on Alice and Sydney Black, a character introduced in the Country of Diamonds game (think of an anti- Peter White), and the second is a story about her and the Bloody Twins.

The illustrations and character bios are in full color, and beautiful to look at.

Throughout the books are commentary and interviews with the main illustrator for the Alice games, which are very interesting to read.

All in all, a good item to add to the collection of an Country of Hearts fan!!
