It's hard for younger pop fans to understand how important the Allman Brothers Band was. Its record sales seem paltry in retrospect, as does the number of its releases. But commercial analysis misses the point. The original Allman Brothers Band was the first 1970s Southern rock band. Its dual lead guitars and its blues-based music were emulated by Lynard Skynard, .38 Special, etc., and filled 1970s airwaves with rebel yells and hearty endorsements of life on the road. Unfortunately, far too many of these bands shared management rip-offs and early deaths, too. Freeman follows the Allmans' madcap progress across the pop music landscape in as much detail as possible in a book of less than 1,000 pages. Between the scandals, deaths, busts, lawsuits, and the horror of the Cher (aka Mrs. Greg Allman) years, the band packed an incredible amount of living into a relatively short career. Very Real

Scott Freeman gives a in depth portrait of one of most influential bands of the Classic Rock era. Most special is the description of Duane Allman's influence on the band. From reading this book, I realized that Duane was both a talented musician and a leader as he knew how to interact with every one of the band members including his sometimes irresponsible brother Gregg. It seems that after Duane died, the other band members carried on a piece of the legacy Duane created. However, each of these other band members has a special personality as well. There are some great stories interwoved in this book which are funny, sad, and historical in the shape of how blues rock music has evolved. Anyone who appreciates rock n roll music and even casually likes this band will find this book a winner.

An engaging account

"Midnight Riders: The story of the Allman Brothers Band" is a biography of the exciting life of one of America's greatest Rock & Roll bands. Scott Freeman has written a wonderful account of the band's beginnings all the way through their breakups and reunions. This band had some tremendous trials to go through such as two original members deaths as well as problems with drugs and greedy record companies. But it is pretty impressive they managed to not only survive Duane Allman's and Berry Oakley's death but also that they managed to still be a great band without Duane, the elder Allman and founder/leader of the band.
The story starts out with Duane and Greg's childhood in Florida and how they got hooked on "the fever." It follows the two from their attraction to "black music" or the blues all the way through the last incarnations of the band in the early to mid-nineties. This biography is written so well that I thoroughly enjoyed learning about all the amazing things they accomplished up until the time that Duane Allman dies, then I struggled to get through the rest of it just because I was so depressed that such an amazing musicians life was cut so short. Duane Allman actually died at the peak of his musical powers, but who knows, he could have taken the electric slide guitar to even more celestial heights than he already had on the Fillmore East album.

The author also gives album reviews of each album as they make them. This was helpful because they are done very well and it gives you a chance to picture the music more clearly. Another plus is the album reccomendations in the appendix, which is great because not very ABB album is fantastic so he tells you which ones to avoid and which to add to your collection.
For me, I think this is one of the best stories ever told about a rock band. And the ABB story is an incredible story of love, devastating losses, and redemption. All of it is true. It has increased my love for the ABB, who represent everything good about southern rock and American music in general. It would be a great addition to any person's collection of literature whether you're a ABB fan or not. But after reading this book you may find yourself a fan of the band afterall.

If your just looking for some good,clean,fun

I've had few literary journeys like the one I've just experienced. You are not only reading about places like Macon Ga. or the Fillmore East as examples, but you feel as if you are actually there. The story is well told as you are brought from the joys of success and good times to the tradgedies of death. This book gives new insights to one of the best bands ever in the history of rock and roll, and clears up some rumors that have followed the band for years. No matter how big a fan you think you are of the Allman Brothers, there are numerous things in this book that you didn't know. In addition, you will learn facts about other prominent figures of rock, recording sessions, and unseen members of the Allman Brothers family. We could probably find flaws with most books, I however, just took in what was given to me and enjoyed it completely. Fan or not, this book is a must for anyone into the music scene.

For me reading the book was a happy trip down memory lane

I grew up a Detroit Lions fan and first started following the game at roughly the same era that the players described in the book were active members of the team. For me reading the book was a happy trip down memory lane. The time the author spent talking with the Detroit Lions was particularly interesting as he not only wrote of each player as a person as well as the player's take on ho to play his position and hos to work with the other players to create a real team. I learned more about football and summer training camp and I had a great time reading about the Lions I first remember.

Wonderful!

I am a huge fan of the Sword Art Online Progressive manga. Not so much the anime as I think it leaves out a TON of character development (among other things) mainly between Asuna and Kirito. The Progressive manga goes in more detail as to how Asuna and Kirito know each other and the adventures they have that the anime pretty much skips entirely. I love Kiseki Himura's illustrations as well. The facial expressions, character designs, postures of all the characters are spot on in my humble opinion. A great manga overall.

This book completes the first volume and original SAO progressive (Light Novel) and story "Rondo of a Fragile Blade". Next is the 3rd floor. Join Kirito, and Asuna as they meet a new friend. Kizmel, a NPC who seems different than all others. As well as a nee foe. A hooded figure confronts Kirito all alone in the woods. Next up is "Concerto of Black and White".

A sympathetic, realistic portrait of a lobster-trapping family on Swan's Island, Maine, showing their activities throughout the year. Graff and Howard depict all of the Joyces--men, women, boys, and girls--working long, hard hours at the trade they love. Their life, though stable, is not static: people come and go; jobs change and they have to adjust. Graff's style is very expressive of feelings, which may induce readers to consider what it would be like to live this way. The lovely b&w photos are so well composed and well placed that no captions are necessary; the eye easily alternates between words and images. Environmental problems are barely hinted at--e.g., the overharvesting of food fish that led to their disappearance and the state regulation of lobstering. The book's most useful feature may be its clear presentation of how lobsters are caught, though nothing in the CIP data denotes this as a subject. An unusually evocative portrayal of a region. Where did all of Tinkerbell's friends go?

Having watched all the Disney Fairies movies, and having enjoyed the extra high quality character development found in these, my daughter and I were a bit disappointed that none of the familiar characters were in this book. The fairies in this book are all unfamiliar, with the exception of Tinkerbell, of course. Having said that, the stories themselves are lovely. So, if your child is looking for Fawn, Rosetta, Vidia, or other "friends" from the Disney Fairies series of movies (e.g., the Secret of the Wings, Neverbeast, Pirate Fairy, etcetera), they are bound be confused or disappointed by this alternate fairy universe. Otherwise, this is worth buying.

Good collection based on the book series

Printing and Format
The book doesn't match the square storybook style, and the cover is kind of squishy.
The print is fairly large, and lots of colored pictures to keep kids interested.
The art style is of the books, not the films.

Content
The stories also follow the Disney Fairies books by Gail Carson Levine over the movies. They don't feature all the movie characters, nor does it follow set movie lore.
Still the stories are entertaining. Some of the stories have been published becore, but many seem new for the collection.

A good book for entertainment or education

Hamilton's mythology deserves its place with Bulfinch's mythology as one of the primary anthologies of classical mythology. Although the book covers Greek/Roman myths thoroughly, the Norse myths are touched upon only briefly, which is why I have given the book four stars rather than five. Nonetheless, the quality of the book is excellent, and it is useful as a volume to be read for entertainment, and as a classroom primer (I myself have taught a Mythology class using it as the primary textbook). Hamilton's retellings are engaging, and her scholasticism is evident throughout--a small example is her use of the less popular Roman names for the primary gods (Jupiter, Juno, Mars, etc.) when they are found in myths of Roman origin. Hamilton also includes information at the beginning of most chapters about the source of the myth and its author, which is very helpful. She synthesizes the longer myths, such as the Trojan War (found in the Iliad) and the quest for the golden fleece in such a way as to highlight their major events and give the reader a flavor of their content. Overall, I have not encountered a better survey of classical mythology in one volume. Incidentally, if the reader desires more information on the Norse Myths, I recommend Kevin Crossley-Holland's Norse Myths, which is also an excellent volume.

Timeless Tales of the Gods and Heroes of Classical Mythology

Edith Hamilton's "Mythology" tell the "Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes" of classical mythology and this volume, first written in 1942, is now a timeless classic itself. This was the first book of mythology that I ever read and it is still the best. When Hamilton retells the love story of Cupid and Psyche or the tragedy of Agamemnon and his children, she does so with a full sense of what it meant when first told by Apuleius or Aeschylus. These are not children's tales, but the heroic legends and religious beliefs of the ancient Greeks. Furthermore, the illustrations by Steele Savage have the elegance of wood block prints, which, for all I know, is exactly what they are. I appreciate Hamilton's choice to avoid relying on Ovid, for while the "Metamorphoses" is the most comprehensive ancient text dealing with the classical myths, Ovid is an unbeliever. For Hamilton the writings of Homer, Hesiod and Pindar are more abbreviated in terms of providing details for the myths, but at least they take the tales seriously.
Another strength of the book is how she organizes the myths in her seven parts: (1) Covers the complete pantheon of deities, including the lesser gods of Olympus and Earth and the later Roman additions, as well as the earliest heroes. (2) Retells the various tales of love, between mortals and the gods or each other, along with the Quest for the Golden Fleece and other early heroic adventures. (3) Focuses specifically on the greatest heroes, Perseus, Theseus and Hercules, with Atalanta thrown in the mix in a curious but understandable editorial decision by Hamilton. (4) Puts together Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid into a giant epic stretching from the Judgment of Paris to the founding of Roman, with the Odyssey and the tragedies of Euripides. (5) Tells about the great mythological families, namely the House of Atreus (Agamemnon), the Royal House of Thebes (Oedipus and Antigone), and the Royal House of Athens. (6) Covers all of the lesser myths, most notably Midas. (7) Goes off in a new direction, providing a very brief introduction to Norse mythology that seems woefully inadequate given the comprehensive compilation of classical mythology that precedes it.
I looked over other possibilities as a basic textbook for an introductory mythology course, but I keep coming back to this one. If you want analysis of these myths, then you certainly want to look elsewhere. But if you want a solid retelling of virtually every tale of classical mythology, then Edith Hamilton's volume is still at the top of the list.

A good overview, but not the best reference.

Looking at the title of the book, I thought this book would be a collection of myths. Upon looking at the list of other titles by Edith Hamilton (like "The Greek Way" and "The Roman Way"), I felt that this would be more of the history of mythology. This book is a blend of these two ideas.
The book is not organized to be a quick reference. It tells the main stories and characters as well as gives a brief section on the minor figures. For each section, the author explains where she is getting the material (for instance, from Homer or from Ovid) with a little editorial comment. Then, she relates the myth. She is giving you the story, but it does not read like a story. It reads like a college instructor giving you the highlights of the story with the occasional comment.
Although the bulk of the myths covered are either Greek or Roman, Hamilton does include some Norse mythology. Given the difference in worldview difference, I would like to have seen more contrasting of the differences.
I found this book to be a great review of the Greek and Roman myths. I found that the differences between the Greek and Roman interpretations of the same basic myth to be very interesting. It is not a substitute for reading the myths themselves, and for this, Hamilton does mention the authors and, sometimes, the play or poem. I would recommend this book.
