Anchor and Flares: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hope, and Service, by Kate Braestrup

Kate Braestrup's life was transformed by the loss of her husband; now Kate faces the possibility that she may lose her son.

As a young mother Kate Braestrup discovered the fierce protectiveness that accompanies parenthood. In the intervening years--through mourning her husband and the joy of remarriage and a blended family--Kate has absorbed the rewards and complications of that spirit.

But when her eldest son joins the Marines, Kate is at a crossroads: Can she reconcile her desire to protect her children with her family's legacy of service? Can parents balance the joy of a child's independence with the fear of letting go?

Inspired by the families she meets as a chaplain and by her son's journey, Kate examines the twinned emotions of faith and fear, and learns that the threats we can't predict are the ones that rip us apart--and knit us together.

Review
"Kate Braestrup is funny, reflective, and--above all--honest. In Anchor and Flares, she has proven, once again, that she is a writer upon whom nothing is lost, even when her mind is reeling."―Phyllis Theroux, author of Night Lights: Bedtime Stories for Parents in the Dark

"Kate Braestrup is at the very top of her game with Anchor and Flares. She's working to understand the very heart of parenthood--the weave of attachments that make it almost impossible to do what we know we must: let go."
―Kelly Corrigan, author of Glitter and Glue and The Middle Place

"Reading Anchor and Flares is like having a fiercely compassionate and comically no-nonsense best friend meandering with you through meditations on faith, war, death, and parenting. Why? Why? Why? Braestrup asks a million times, in a million different ways. Sometimes the answer is courage or grief or hope. But usually it's love."
―Catherine Newman, author of Waiting for Birdy

"Sensitive and wholesomely charming, the book is refreshingly free of preachy proselytization and instead addresses the bittersweetness of parenthood and perennial nurturing. Braestrup delivers another appealing, tenderhearted memoir braiding faith and family."
―Kirkus

Deep and Meaningful Look at Life/Death/Family/ and Love
By poemgirl
I have read all of Kate Braestrup's book and up until this one, her first book, Here If You Need Me: A True Story, was my favorite. This one, however, touched me deeply. In between relating stories about the accidents and deaths she and her fellow Maine Wardens have to deal with, Braestrup intertwines her own experiences as a mother, wife, and chaplain. And all of these stories are ones that any parent, (any person, really ) who has ever cared for and worried about another human being can identify with. No one is immune from life's heartaches, but God's grace and love helps us muddle through. I have already recommended this book to friends and family.

That's how I'd best describe Braetrup's writing and her deep thought
By William G. Schmidt
Insightful. That's how I'd best describe Braetrup's writing and her deep thought. While I am not religious, there were plenty of instances where Braestrup challenged my thinking of what a minister actually is. Good for her to keep an open mind and to present her beliefs in a new way. The pain in this book is balanced with joy. I appreciated the humor which takes the edge off the sometimes deadly subjects. All in all, an enjoyable read and one where I'm glad I took the time.

Kate Braestrup's books somehow combine religious thought, sad stories, and humor to create books that are both comforting and thought provoking. Each one has been worth reading and worth recommending to others who want a good read and some intellectual substance.

Amazon.com Review
Cigars of the Pharaoh is one of Tintin's earliest adventures. He and Snowy are on a cruise to Egypt when they happen to meet Professor Sophocles Sarcophagus (the first of Tintin's absent-minded professors) and join his expedition. But they become embroiled in a complicated scheme involving a fakir, cigars marked with an unusual brand, and Rajijah, the poison of madness. Most significantly, Tintin meets the detectives Thompson and Thomson as well as the movie mogul Rastapopolous. While Cigars of the Pharaoh is a self-contained story, some of the mysteries are resolved in The Blue Lotus. Herge wrote Cigars in 1932 then revised it in 1955, which is why the art has the more polished look of later stories as well as the anachronistic glimpse of a copy of Destination: Moon. --David Horiuchi

Review
The Adventures of Tintin (also known as The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn[4] in the United Kingdom) is a 2011 American performance capture 3D film based on The Adventures of Tintin, a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Hergé (Georges Remi). Directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, and written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the film is based on three of the original comic books: The Crab with the Golden Claws (1941), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943), and Red Rackham's Treasure (1944).[5]
Spielberg first acquired rights to produce a film based upon the Adventures of Tintin series following Hergé's death in 1983, and re-optioned them in 2002. Filming was due to begin in October 2008 for a 2010 release, but release was delayed to 2011 after Universal opted out of producing the film with Paramount, who provided $30 million on pre-production. Sony chose to co-produce the films. The delay resulted in Thomas Sangster, who had been cast as Tintin, departing from the project. Producer Peter Jackson, whose company Weta Digital is providing the computer animation, intends to direct a sequel. Spielberg and Jackson also hope to co-direct a third film.[6] --Wikipedia

I am 9 years old and I am in the 3rd grade. This is the best book I have read in my life. I want to buy more Tin Tin books. The books are very funny and very mistirious. I read it with my dad. These are the only books I like. My favorite part is when Tin Tin jumps on this heavy guy and use his belly as a trampolin!
I love them, Get them! The real rating is *****************************************

The first discrete improvement.
By Robert Beveridge
Herge, The Cigars of the Pharaoh (Methuen, 1934)

The Cigars of the Pharaoh was the beginning of Tintin's adventures leaving, at least for the big picture, the realm of the episodic and getting into big story arcs with returning characters (this is the book that introduces Thomson and Thompson, who would become two of the series' most beloved characters). The adventure itself still has much of the episodic feel one tends to find with things that are serialized, with lots of mini-cliffhangers and miraculous escapes, but this is where Herge really started to find his feet; it's still early work, and reads like early work, but it's good early work. ***

The first truly great Tintin adventure.
By darragh o'donoghue
'Cigars Of The Pharoah' traverses the pyramids of Egypt, the deserts of Arabia, the jungles and palaces of India; and sees a vacationing Tintin stumbling on a gun-running, drug-smuggling plot centring on crates of Flor Fina cigars. An encounter with absent-minded archaeologist Sophocles Sarcophagus instigates the action and sees our heroes, among other things, cast adrift the ocean in coffins, where they are attacked by sharks; press-ganged during a tribal war, and lined up for execution; crashing a plane in the jungle and learning the language of elephants; committed to a lunatic asylum; escaping assassination attempts by a shady fakir; as well as participating in the more familiar car chases, train adventures, mountain climbs; meanwhile, Snowy is mobbed for attacking a sacred cow.
The two parts of the story are sensitively differentiated by Herge's astonishing drawing, the bright wide plains of Egypt contrasting with more richly colourful Indian milieux, with their elaborate costumes and decorations. Herge pulls off some remarkable tableaux - the Egyptian death chamber of mummified European archaeologists; Tintin's lurid, narcotic hallucination; his flight through the gates of Mecca from an army; his sitting on elephant-back in the jungle with mad Professor Sarcophagus. Although Herge respects the native hierarchies of the countries he draws, his image of beleagured colonialism is quite damning, with the unforgettable decline of an already barmy Sarcophagus into a babbling madman dressed in top hat, tails and undergarments shooting at butterflies a warning to all who would excavate ancient cultures for European benefit.
But 'Cigars', the first truly great Tintin adventure (and part one of a story that concludes with 'The Blue Lotus'), is most notable for the introduction of two legendary characters, Thomson and Thompson, those near-identical, always resourceful, but ultimately hapless police detectives; Magrittean, bolwer-hatted Englishmen doomed to each other's punning company: 'What a surprise to see your face again! We'd lost you completely!' 'To be precise, we'd completely lost face!'

Meet Tinkerbell
By Kelly Gresham
Great book! The pictures are beautiful for this type of paperback beginning reader. We do have the movie and this book follows the movie with an exception. In the movie Tinkerbell desires to go to the mainland and ends up being the first of the tinker fairies permitted to go.
However, my daughter doesn't mind that part being left out and asks me to read it with her frequently.

Loved These Books
By Kebmub
I wan to clarify this review by saying I loved reading these books when I was a kid, so I bought a bunch for my niece and nephew. Upon receiving the books I noticed something was off. I had an older copy of The Red Sea Sharks around, so I compared the two and was shocked to see the dialogue lettering was completely different in the new version. The newer digitally typeset lettering detracts from the experience of the book compared to the older hand lettering. Among other things, large areas of white space are left unfilled, which disconnects the flow of the eye. I returned all the books I ordered because of this unnecessary change. These books were so great as they were. Why on earth would you change them? Blistering Barnacles! Visigoths! Poltroons!

Freeing slaves and fighting shady arms dealers
By Thomas Wikman
Tintin is one of the most famous comic book characters in the world. Unfortunately he is not as well known in the U.S. Hopefully I can help change that. The Tintin albums were created by the Belgian comics writer and artist Georges Prosper Remi under the pen name Hergé. His first Tintin album "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" appeared in the pages of Le Petit Vingtième on January 10, 1929 and his last completed album was "Tintin and the Picaros" in 1975/1976. The Tintin albums are primarily for children but they are written so that adults also greatly enjoy them.

Tintin is a Belgian investigative journalist who gets drawn into all kinds of dangerous and eventful adventures around the world. Already in the very first album "Tintin in the Soviets" he is aided by his talking dog, a fox terrier called Snowy. In Swedish and in French Snowy is called Milou. In "The Crab with the Golden Claws" he meets the grumpy but hilarious Captain Haddock. A lot of the best comic situations arise from Captain Haddock's bad temper in combination with his bad luck and above all his creative use of words. As a sailor Captain Haddock is expected to swear a lot but all swear words have been replaced by expressions like "billions of blue blistering barnacles", "you Mameluke", "Macrocepahlic Baboon", "odd-toed ungulate", "and troglodyte "," Pithecantrophus", but never real swear words. Another source of many comic situations is the genial but hearing-impaired Professor Cuthbert Calculus (Kalkyl in Swedish, Tournesol in French). Other prominent supporting characters are the incompetent twin detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond and Dupont), and the constantly joking and laughing but irritating insurance salesman Jolyon Wagg.

In this album from 1958 Tintin and Captain Haddock unexpectedly meets an old friend of Tintin, the former dictator from South America, General Alcazar. It turns out that General Alcazar is trying to purchase weapons from a shady arms dealer who is also illegally selling arms to two fighting parties in the Middle East. The son of the emir Ben Khalish Ezab (one of the fighting parties) the rambunctious Abdullah is staying with Captain Haddock (and Tintin) and is playing all kinds of tricks on everyone. To get away from this Arab Dennis the Menace and all his pranks they go see the emir himself and end up getting deeply involved in an incredible adventure. They also stumble upon an organization that is selling African slaves (slavery still existed in the Middle East and Africa in 1958). A lot of old crooks and friends from other books show up here, including Captain Allan, Rastapopolous, and the lovely but highly irritating Prima Donna and opera singer Bianca Castafiore.

This album is fast paced, action packed and very exciting and quiet interesting. It is difficult to put the book down even for an adult. The humor is superb and there are laugh out loud moments on almost every page.

It is my experience that American kids will love the Tintin albums once they have been acquainted with them (an album is a hardback comic book with the pictures in series). My kids love them and their friends love them as well. As a child, I read all of the Tintin books in Swedish, and as an adult living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. This book is intensely exciting and full of action and therefore it is one of my favorites, and one of my children's favorite. I highly recommend this Tintin album to young and old.

More high adventures in Arabia
By Gary Selikow
After a strange encounter with General Alcazar of San Theodoros, and then getting home to see that Emir Ben Kalish Ezab, has sent his thoroughly obnoxious son, Prince Abdullah, to stay at Marlinspike, the Emir is deposed by the evil Revolutionary thug, Sheik Bab El Er.
Tintin and the Captain fly to Khemed, to try to get to the bottom of an illegal arms buying racket and if they can, to help their friend, the Emir.
There they take a boat to Mecca , where they must battle several enemies , in a high adventure on the Red Sea. Before the adventure is through , they will break a slave smuggling ring and ensure the defeat of several villains.
The issue of slave trade by Arabs , of Africans , was not only still going on when this book was written in 1958 , but is still endemic today , in places such as the Sudan.
These adventures are always full, of life and colour.

A wonderfully illustrated look at Alexander the Great
By Lawrance Bernabo
Robin Lane Fox considers Alexander the Great to be the world's first authentic hero. Having retraced Alexander's 10 year, 11,000-mile march in carving out his empire and written a prize-winning biography, "Alexander the Great," the author certainly has the credentials to back up this particular book. "The Search for Alexander" emphasizes the conqueror's personality, motivation, and incredible ambition that consistently overcame severe obstacles of geography, weather, morale, and food supply. Consequently, this book reads more like a detective story, sifting through the historical record to make his best case for what really happened and why. "The Search for Alexander" contains more than 220 photographs, 135 in full cover, including striking pictures of the royal tombs discovered at Vergina, Greece in 1977, which Lane Fox argues is the burial place of Alexander's father, Philip II. If you have even a passing interest in the subject, this is a fascinating book, whether you are content just to look at the pictures or are really interested in the historiography involved in this volume.

Well worth the money!
By Carolyn
I thoroughly enjoyed Robin Lane Fox's book "The Search for Alexander". The book was very interesting and informative and the photographs were outstanding. The only thing I was disappointed in was on page 68 is a photo of the head of a statue that might be Hephaestion, and it is placed too close to the edge of the page so that the nose is cut off. I have also read Mr. Fox's books "Alexander the Great" and "The Making of Alexander". I have enjoyed reading and re-reading all three of his books. I find Mr. Fox to be a very likeable man and his books are very fair to Alexander. I highly recommend all of Robin Lane Fox's books.

Decent read... Much better and well written accounts of all things Alexander out there. If you're a fanatic of that time period like myself, its worth the read - if this is your first book on the subject, look elsewhere.
