Amazon.com Review
Oprah Book Club® Selection, May 1999: Astrid Magnussen, the teenage narrator of Janet Fitch's engrossing first novel, White Oleander, has a mother who is as sharp as a new knife. An uncompromising poet, Ingrid despises weakness and self-pity, telling her daughter that they are descendants of Vikings, savages who fought fiercely to survive. And when one of Ingrid's boyfriends abandons her, she illustrates her point, killing the man with the poison of oleander flowers. This leads to a life sentence in prison, leaving Astrid to teach herself the art of survival in a string of Los Angeles foster homes.

As Astrid bumps from trailer park to tract house to Hollywood bungalow, White Oleander uncoils her existential anxieties. "Who was I, really?" she asks. "I was the sole occupant of my mother's totalitarian state, my own personal history rewritten to fit the story she was telling that day. There were so many missing pieces." Fitch adroitly leads Astrid down a path of sorting out her past and identity. In the process, this girl develops a wire-tight inner strength, gains her mother's white-blonde beauty, and achieves some measure of control over their relationship. Even from prison, Ingrid tries to mold her daughter. Foiling her, Astrid learns about tenderness from one foster mother and how to stand up for herself from another. Like the weather in Los Angeles--the winds of the Santa Anas, the scorching heat--Astrid's teenage life is intense. Fitch's novel deftly displays that, and also makes Astrid's life meaningful. --Katherine Anderson

From Publishers Weekly
Thirteen-year-old Astrid Magnussen, the sensitive and heart-wrenching narrator of this impressive debut, is burdened with an impossible mother in Ingrid, a beautiful, gifted poet whose scattered life is governed by an enormous ego. When Ingrid goes to prison for murdering her ex-lover, Astrid enters the Los Angeles foster care program and is placed with a series of brilliantly characterized families. Astrid's first home is with Starr, a born-again former druggie, whose boyfriend, middle-aged Ray, encourages Astrid to paint (Astrid's absent father is an artist) and soon becomes her first lover, but who disappears when Starr's jealousy becomes violent. Astrid finds herself next at the mercy of a new, tyrannical foster mom, Marvel Turlock, who grows wrathful at the girl's envy of a sympathetic next-door prostitute's luxurious life. "Never hope to find people who will understand you," Ingrid archly advises as her daughter's Dickensian descent continues in the household of sadistic Amelia Ramos, where Astrid is reduced to pilfering food from garbage cans. Then she's off to the dream home of childless yuppies Claire and Ron Richards, who shower her with gifts, art lessons and the warmth she's been craving. But this new development piques Ingrid's jealousy, and Astrid, now 17 and a high school senior, falls into the clutches of the entrepreneurial Rena Grushenka. Amid Rena's flea-market wares, Astrid learns to fabricate junk art and blossoms as a sculptor. Meanwhile, Ingrid, poet-in-prison, becomes a feminist icon who now has a chance at freedomAif Astrid will agree to testify untruthfully at the trial. Astrid's difficult choice yields unexpected truths about her hidden past, and propels her already epic story forward, with genuinely surprising and wrenching twists. Fitch is a splendid stylist; her prose is graceful and witty; the dialogue, especially Astrid's distinctive utterances and loopy adages, has a seductive pull. This sensitive exploration of the mother-daughter terrain (sure to be compared to Mona Simpson's Anywhere but Here) offers a convincing look at what Adrienne Rich has called "this womanly splitting of self," in a poignant, virtuosic, utterly captivating narrative. Reading group guide; author tour. (Apr.) FYI: An excerpt from the novel was selected as a notable story in Best American Short Stories 1994.

From Library Journal
This novel will surely be hailed as one of the best novels of the year and is likely the best debut this reviewer has ever read. When beautiful, egotistical poet Ingrid murders the lover who dumped her, 12-year-old daughter Astrid descends into the hells of foster care, where she is sustained only by a fierce intelligence and great artistic talent. Shot and left for dead by her first mother, half-starved in a mansion by another, turned into a drudge by a racist, she nearly finds happiness and mutual love with Ron and Claire; but then Claire kills herself. Shopping with them, Ingrid wonders who would want a black (Christmas) tree, but I knew someone woulda belated Halloween, to decorate with plastic skullsor just for the pleasure of making their kids cry. Heartbreaking, but without a trace of sentimentality, this novel provokes amazement that children like Astrid can emerge whole and capable after what we know are even worse childhoods than hers.Judith Kicinski, Sarah Lawrence Coll. Incredible, hypnotic, seductive, I couldn't put it down.
By A Customer
White Oleander simply touched me more than almost any novel I have ever read. Astrid was a realistic character. Anyone who thinks that this novel was extreme and melodramatic in its portrayal of foster care obviously knows nothing of foster care or displaced children from disfunctional homes. Having worked in inpatient psychiatric units with both children and adults in state custody, I am well aware of how realistic Janet Fitch's book was.The things that happened to Astrid happen to children every day in this country. In fact reality is a little worse. The novel also presented the fact that we all recieve blessings and curses from our parents. Ingrid was a sociopath who did whatever she felt like doing regardless of who got hurt. She ruthlessly dominated her child's life "I am your home" and seemed to feel justified in doing so. However she also was a brilliantly educated poet who passed on the gifts that helped Astrid to survive her years in foster care: strength, independence, and a love of learning, a sharp intellect. I saw Astrid as a survivor who was as together as anyone could be after 6 years in foster care. In life, and in White Oleander, there is no happily ever after, and there are always loose ends. Fitch made me laugh and cry with her liquid poetry. A testement to survival.

Awesome Book!
By Nancy Hochman
I could not put this book down! "White Oleander" was wonderful from the very first sentence to the very last and I have Oprah to thank for bringing author Janet Fitch to my attention. The story is narrated by Astrid - a teenage girl - who suffers through years of living in the foster care system while her mother Ingrid serves a life sentence for murdering her ex-lover. (I can just envision a younger Angelina Jolie-type playing the role of Astrid in the film version.) Each family that Astrid lives with has its own unique (yet sometimes cliched) cast of characters that are instrumental in shaping and transforming the young woman she becomes. This is a novel of self discovery the hard way. I personally cannot imagine the loneliness and terror that Astrid experienced while bouncing from home to home to home. Ingrid stays present in Astrid's unstable life through letters and occasional visits and their strained relationship is key to Astrid's development. The character are so real, the writing style is beautiful, the plot moves swiftly and the story weaves the reader through every human emotion possible. While I'm not a fan of the Oprah Winfrey show, I am a fan of her book club and this novel ranks up there as one of her best picks.

A Magnificent Piece of Modern Literature
By Tracey A. Nettell
While Oleander is a beautiful and lyrical piece of contemporary literature with a storyline and cast of characters like nothing I have ever read. It is the story of the incredibly complex relationship between a self-absorbed "free spirit" and the daughter who wants nothing more than to be loved unconditionally as a child should be. When Ingrid is jailed for murder, so starts the long and rocky journey of Astrid as she moves from foster home to foster home. Few people will go through in their entire lifetimes what this child experiences throughout her early teenage years. Her journey is difficult but the author keeps her readers engrossed until the very end. This is a wonderful book and I sincerely hope the upcoming movie does it true justice.

Tintin begins his greatest adventure when he and Captain Haddock are rather cryptically summoned to join Professor Calculus in Klow. It turns out that the professor has joined a consortium in order to build a rocket that will land a person on the moon (this was in 1953, well before Neil Armstrong). Unfortunately, the project has attracted some unwanted attention from those who will resort to sabotage and skullduggery to steal the technology. Is the project successful? Well, it's probably not that great of a spoiler to reveal that the story is continued in Explorers on the Moon. --David Horiuchi

Review
The Adventures of Tintin (also known as The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn[4] in the United Kingdom) is a 2011 American performance capture 3D film based on The Adventures of Tintin, a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Hergé (Georges Remi). Directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, and written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the film is based on three of the original comic books: The Crab with the Golden Claws (1941), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943), and Red Rackham's Treasure (1944).[5]
Spielberg first acquired rights to produce a film based upon the Adventures of Tintin series following Hergé's death in 1983, and re-optioned them in 2002. Filming was due to begin in October 2008 for a 2010 release, but release was delayed to 2011 after Universal opted out of producing the film with Paramount, who provided $30 million on pre-production. Sony chose to co-produce the films. The delay resulted in Thomas Sangster, who had been cast as Tintin, departing from the project. Producer Peter Jackson, whose company Weta Digital is providing the computer animation, intends to direct a sequel. Spielberg and Jackson also hope to co-direct a third film.[6] --Wikipedia

About the Author
Hergé, one of the most famous Belgians in the world, was a comics writer and artist. The internationally successful Adventures of Tintin are his most well-known and beloved works. They have been translated into 38 different languages and have inspired such legends as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. He wrote and illustrated for The Adventures of Tintin until his death in 1983.

Tintin's lunar adventures mark Herge's finest hour.
By A Customer
Along with its sequel, Explorers on the Moon, Destination Moon is the most fully realised of Tintin's adventures. Published over a decade before the lunar landing of 1969, Herge's vision of space travel is a convincing one. Brilliantly illustrated with Herge's unique cinematic style and featuring some excellent villains, as well as hilarious antics from the Thompson Twins, Destination Moon is a must read.

Not just for children!
By A Customer
Although this book is geared toward children, it can be enjoyed by adults too. Destination Moon was the first book I read by Herge, and I immediately went on to read the others. The storylines are wonderful - you really get caught up in them! And the pictures are great! That is one thing I really enjoyed about this book - the pictures! You also have to pay attention to Snowy's antics! What a character! This book is a must-read!

It is Tintin, what can I say?!!
By A Customer
Herge is the greatest comic drawer in the world. Tintin's adventures are good for both children and adults, maybe even better for adults that children. I am just sorry that Americans don't know these books better, I wish Tintin and Asterix were popular in America the same as they are in Europe and other parts of the world.

Impossible to forget.
By Amazon Customer
You know those books that stay with you long after the last page has turned? Or that book you delay reading, even once you have it in your greedy little hands (oh sweet agony!) because you know how devastated you will be once it is well and truly over?
Each book in this series was THAT book for me. I don't know if this is unique to myself but I happen to be blessed with this awesome ability to almost completely forget a book within a few months of finishing it. This is a blessing because rereading books is much more enjoyable (ooo, who knows what awaits for me this time around), but I also think--wow is there that little room in my brain that I can't convert everything I read from short term to long term memory? Anyway, I digress...The point was that I can't get these books out of my head! The characters are like old friends I want to revisit, and I mourn the loss of some of them still. I remember their names, and feel each gut wrenching moment the characters experience as they are experiencing it. All of their joys and all of their sorrows were mine too while I was reading this series. And can I just say WOW, that takes some serious talent.
If I could give this series more than 5 stars, I would. It actually deserves it.
If I could climb into the pages and live there, I would (my husband might have some issues with that but I think we could totally figure it out).
If I could give this set to all of my friends and family as a gift, I would...wait, I actually do that.
I'm not going to do an in depth dissection of the books, or involved character profiles. Suffice to say that this book is so much more than it appears to be. To me, it felt like at the core this series was about relationships--how they define us, create and shape what and who we are. This is a love story; a story about the family we are born with and the family that we create.
I don't know what else to say that won't ruin the experience of reading these books for you. If you have any doubts, just buy the first one and if you hate it (or I guess are indifferent to it), let me know. I would be interested to see what about this series was unlovable for you. Otherwise, enjoy and welcome to a world full of characters that are impossible to forget.

PS--to parents who are particularly protective of their children, and censor reading material, this series may not be for you. That being said, a mature tween or teenager would be an appropriate audience. The love isn't graphic, and if you have cable, chances are your child has been exposed to worse. Just sayin'.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is Amazing!
By Eddie James DeBrae
This is probably the most unique fantasy story I have ever read in my entire life. Beautiful writing. Amazing characters. Refreshing plot. Gorgeous covers. It's just amazing.

Strong writing, but weak fate-centric relationship
By K Smith
I consider myself a reader of light-fantasy, so this series was a stretch for me and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the read. One of the reasons I shy away from traditional fantasy novels is because of the complicated characters otherworldly settings. This could have been a complicated series, but the settings and characters were clearly developed (so I was rarely confused or overwhelmed).

I want to hang out with 17 year-old Karou in Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I want to peak into her artsy sketchbooks, her life in Prague, and Brimstone’s dusty shop. Karou is relatable as she struggles with belonging, her identity and sense of self. She is one of my favorite recent YA heroines.

I am drawn to many other characters. Karou’s sarcasm is balanced by her best friend Zuzana’s quirky humor (unfortunately, I found her more interesting than Akiva, the male protagonist). Also, it says a lot when I, someone who hates snakes, have a soft-spot for the Chimera snake-woman Issa. I rarely like supporting characters this much.

The vivid settings were well developed: Prague, Morocco and Elsewhere. I’m surprised Poison Kitchen isn’t real or that I can’t go visit Monster Castle or the Kirin Caves. I am amazed by Laini Taylor’s imagination.

Laini Taylor’s writing is poetic. It is a slower read than most plot-driven YA books that drive readers to rush. There were times when I wanted increased pacing, but the strong sentences kept me going.
“For the way loneliness is worse when you return to it after a reprieve—like the soul’s version of putting on a wet bathing suit, clammy and miserable.” (Book 1)
Many sentences cause pause as they explore the theme of prejudice.
“It is a condition of monsters that they do not perceive themselves as such. The dragon, you know, hunkered in the village devouring maidens, heard the townsfolk cry ‘Monster!’ and looked behind him.” (Book 1)
Be patient as you read the books, savor the sentences.

My least favorite parts of the books are the fate-centric passages about soul mates. The relationship between Karou and Akiva lacked depth. I was curious about them in Book 1. I liked Madrigal and Akiva most during the masquerade in Book 2 (but otherwise didn’t relate to Madrigal). Unfortunately their soul-mate connection just felt shallow which didn’t fit because everything else seemed so relatable. I found the relationship between Zizana and Mik more interesting and believable. This contrast, made Karou and Akiva’s relationship seem even more lacking.

Overall, I was surprised by how captivated I was by Karou and her worlds. The themes of perception, prejudice and tolerance are capped off with hope. I would recommend the series to fantasy readers and those who are willing to stretch themselves.

Happy Family, by Tracy Barone

In Tracy Barone's mordantly funny debut, a fiercely independent woman is forced to come to terms with the family who raised her, the one who gave her away and the one she desperately wants.

Trenton, New Jersey, 1962: A pregnant girl staggers into a health clinic, gives birth, and flees. A foster family takes the baby in, and an unlikely couple, their lives unspooling from a recent tragedy, hastily adopts her.

Forty years and many secrets and lies later, Cheri Matzner is all grown up and falling apart. Ironic and unapologetic, she's a former cop-turned-disgruntled academic, a frustrated wife trying to get pregnant, an iconoclastic daughter bearing war-wounds from her overbearing mother and the deeply flawed by well-meaning father who has been dead for several years. Thrust into an odyssey of acceptance, Cheri discovers that sometimes it takes half a lifetime to come of age.

Written with a deep emotional intelligence and a biting wit, HAPPY FAMILY weaves together the stories of the beautifully damaged people who have shaped Cheri's life--often in ways she has yet to discover. Asking if we can ever really know our parents outside their roles as our parents, Barone brilliantly explores the often vast divide between our beliefs about our families and the truth.

Review
"Tracy Barone's Happy Family introduces a storyteller whose narrative confidence and style both dares and invites us into a deep exploration of the gap between our expectations and beliefs about our families and the truth. Filled with intimate poignancy, deft humor and pitch-perfect dialogue this books fulfills its ambitious scope and leaves an indelible mark."―A.M. Homes, author of May We Be Forgiven

"Smart, witty and immensely readable, HAPPY FAMILY brilliantly examines the power of family and the secrets we keep, and leaves us cheering for its heroine, Cheri-funny, fierce, aching for connection but independent to a fault-whose mid-life coming-of-age is wise, heartfelt, and a pure page-turning pleasure to read."―Maria Semple, author of national bestseller Where'd You Go, Bernadette

"In her debut novel, screenwriter, playwright, and film producer Barone uses a wide lens to capture Cheri Matzner's life, from a precarious beginning to a confident, peaceful middle age... Cinematic in its scope, this novel takes readers on a broad, deep, and poignant journey alongside a tough, admirable woman and the varied characters who populate her life."―Kirkus

"It's not often that I stumble across a novel as smart, as tender, and as exquisitely rendered as HAPPY FAMILY. Tracy Barone treats the subject in a completely refreshing and original way -- and how is that even possible? This book Blew. Me. Away."―Elin Hilderbrand, author of THE RUMOR

"Tracy Barone's debut novel is whip smart and warm hearted. Big and bold, Happy Family pulls back the tough skin and muscle of family life exposing the blood and secrets beneath. An utterly engrossing read."―Jennifer Gilmore, author of Golden Country and Something Red

"Tracy Barone is a storyteller with a deft, effortless style that grabs you, holds you, and at turns, leaves you breathless. Her characters are so distinctive, so deeply humane and complex, their humor, intelligence and place in the world is immediately apparent. The novel folds out like one of those hand-painted screens that separates one room from another, but in this case, there was nothing hidden behind, all secrets were revealed, as the author took you by the hand through the life of Cheri Matzner. Even her name is exactly right: red hot, ripe and in her perfection, unreachable."―Adriani Trigiani, bestselling author All the Stars in the Heavens

"Barone's debut novel explores the pursuit of human connection with pathos and humor... Cheri is a compelling protagonist, making her journey into the past well worth following."―Publishers Weekly

"A funny, touching tale about growing up--at any age."
―People

"Cheri Maztner is interesting company...Barone has a background in writing for screen and stage, and knows how to propel a story at an engaging clip. Indeed, the pace and structure of this novel suggest a movie-in-waiting."
―New York Times Book Review

Great book!
By Amazon Customer
A splendid novel, with a well paced plot, characters so real you feel you know them intimately, and layers of meaning beneath the title/ Anna Karina allusion (one of my favorite books). As a literature maniac, collector of lst editions, and someone who just loves to immerse himself in a fine novel, i highly recommend it....

Disappointing dysfunctional characters
By Raye
I understand many people liked this book, but I didn't. It started out with a bang, but soon fizzled into yet another tedious tale of dysfunctional relationships. Plus, stereotypes! Annoying ironic title! (weird cover art, too, but that's forgivable). Worst of all, I found the protagonist off-putting and not very believable.
Be forewarned, too: There's a truly disturbing segment about one of the character's devastating illness.

An extraordinary debut
By Susan
Tracy Barone, a name I quickly added to my collection of favored writers, debuted with a splendid book. Having just mucked through two highly unsatisfactory books by seasoned writers, I was gobsmacked by the many skills of a rookie.

The story is driven by a collection of beautifully developed, believable characters, all of whom I came to love. Each one was so real that I occasionally found myself giving them unsolicited advice through the screen of my Kindle. Conjuring up a person in one's mind and creating a realistic life on paper is not only a unique skill, but also an art, usually accomplished only by selected experienced writers. Tracy Barone achieved in her first book what many writers never get quite right.

I have read countless stories centered around adoption, and Happy Family is my new favorite. Sol and Cici Matzner, the adoptive parents of an infant girl, make an unusual and often hilarious couple. The marriage of a Jewish doctor to a beautiful Italian, Catholic child bride, almost unheard of in the 1950s, wreaks havoc on the newlyweds' families. Sol converts to Catholicism in a futile attempt to assuage Cici's family, but he is disowned by the Matzner clan. How ironic that Cici becomes the stereotypical Jewish mother! They name their daughter Cheri, dropping the 'e' from their favorite term of endearment.

Through Cheri, the reader learns of her life through her first forty years. Everything she does thwarts Cici's plans. She is a complex character as she comes of age. From hippie to the NYPD to an expert in an arcane field, she is fiercely independent even after she marries.

The writing of this fast-paced story is close to flawless. The narrative is filled with biting wit, especially with regard to Cici. Despite all her years in America, she still butchers the English language, resulting in countless malaprops. Again Tracy Barone excels where many fail. Rather than sounding forced or demeaning, Cici's attempts are natural and often hilarious. She is the ultimate helicopter parent to a daughter who wants little to do with her family.

I already miss the Matzner family and recommend this book to everyone who wants to meet them.

Very enjoyable read
By Lori Caswell/Dollycas
Dollycas’s Thoughts

Again Alison Sweeney takes us behind the scenes, this time we follow make-up artist Alex Cleary as she tries to kick start her career. She is in the right place at the right time and lands a job with Hillary P. (I would say her empire is striving to be live Oprah Winfrey.) Hillary is not an easy woman to work for, she has a quick temper, demands a lot from her employees and has no problem raging at you when others are present. These traits can cause trouble not only for Hillary but everyone that works for her. Alex is called on the carpet for breaking the terms of her non-disclosure agreement and is on the hook for 5 million dollars! How is Alex going to come up with that kind of money? Is there another way out of this mess?

This was a fast entertaining read. Alex is very personable and very engaging. Her parents had different plans for her life but she is following her dream. Hillary P., is a woman with a rising career and quite a dictator. She rules her life and her employees with an iron fist and steps on or over anyone to advance her career. So of course we readers are rooting for Alex from the get go.

Sweeney has created several other great characters in this story. Alex’s best friend Emma, Billy Fox, an actor Alex meets when he guests on Hillary’s show, her boyfriend, Sean, and her family, plus others Alex meets when she follows Hillary’s show to New York. One who ends up turning Alex’s life inside out.

I enjoyed the way the author brings the madness of Hollywood/New York to life within these pages. I also liked seeing New York through Alex’s eyes. I have never been there myself and think my reactions would be quite the same.

Great characters, a flowing plot, romance, and humor all come together to make this a perfect escape!

Great Beach Read
By PEM
This book had all my loves - make up, the entertainment industry, romance, and New York City. I especially liked the behind the scenes perspective the book gave us of the entertainment industry, and I really enjoyed seeing the industry from a make up artist's view. I especially liked Alex and seeing her grow into a confident young woman. I was involved with the book the entire time. Everything about it rang true. More please!

Another fun peek "behind the curtain" of show biz
By Jessie D
My only wish for Alison's novels is that they be longer! I love living in the world she's created, weaving new characters in with the old. Pulling back the curtain a little bit on celebrity life.

This 3rd novel had a bit of a twist because it was about a *new-to-the-field* make-up artist. As Alex Cleary is learning about the trade and the frustrations of life back stage, we readers get to learn it too. I think that really helped make the explanatory parts of the story more seamless than the last two novels—The Star Attraction and Scared Scriptless—that featured more experienced show biz veterans.

The story is easy and fun, with an obvious "villain" and full-team effort to support our fledgling heroine Alex face her crisis. There's a tiny bit of romance, but this is primarily a coming-of-age story - with a side of feminist, "we can do anything we put our minds' to" empowerment.

It's a quick read. Good for a beach weekend or long flight. The kind of feel-good story you could read with a glass of wine and a blanket on a rainy day to cheer you up.

I just wish there was more romance, more seduction, more depth to the main romantic relationship in the story to make it more plausible. Maybe next time.

Ravishingly beautiful.

I found a copy of this version of Snow White in the school library in Japan where I was teaching, and took it home to read to my boys. Later, I photographed the pages and showed slides to my Japanese students, using these illustrations to explain the surface, psychological, and spiritual meaning of the Grimm's stories. Of Grimm illustrators, I think Hyman is best, and while her illustrations of Rapunsel, Living Water, etc, are wonderful, this is her most inspired work.

First of all, the paintings take my breath away. Unlike the Disney figures, one can understand why the Mirror on the Wall thought these two ladies beautiful, and why the prince fell in love with Snow White! Hyman uses light brilliantly, beautifully, and with subtlety. Wow! My students liked them, too.

Also, Hyman seems to be one of those rare souls who picks up on the spiritual level of the Grimm tale. None of the other reviewers has mentioned the allegorical nature of Snow White, and I don't want to ruin the story for anyone. But if this interests you, pay close attention to numbers, temptations, candles, the mirror, especially the final mirror image, and the face of the King's Son. Hyman has drawn so subtly that it is possible to entirely overlook this quality and thoroughly enjoy her art, as an atheist may enjoy, say, the Chronicles of Narnia. Nor am I even sure she was a Christian. But she may have picked up on something intended by the Brothers Grimm. (For details, see Ronald Murphy's The Owl, the Raven, and the Dove: The Religious Meaning of the Grimm's Magic Fairy Tales. Or see my upcoming article in Books and Culture, "How the Brothers Grimm Overthrew the Evil Empire.")

Lay all that aside, though, and this is still one of the most lovely children's books I have ever read.

A nice twist to the fairy tale
By Teresa
This is the well-known story of a princess whose evil stepmother tries to have her killed. The huntsmen could not go through with it and tells Snow White to run away. When she does she finds herself in the company of seven small men. They live in a house very happily until the queen finds that Snow White is not dead. She finds Snow White and tricks her into eating a poisoned apple. Snow White dies. She is awoken from her death by the kiss of a prince and they live happily ever after.
The reason I enjoyed this version of Snow White more than others that I have read was that is was not as much of a fairy tail like story and more of a darker approach to it. The seven dwarfs, for example, are not shown as happy little creatures that sing and dance all day long. They are merely shown as small, kind men. The illustrations in this book are so beautiful even though they are not the bright colors that would usually go along with this story.

Snow White
By V. Charbonneau
Parents looking for a good edition of "Snow White" need look no further than this one by Paul Heins and Trina Schart Hyman. One day a beautiful, yet proud and arrogant, queen stands before her magic mirror and asks: "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is most beautiful in the land?" Instead of replying as usual that she is the beautifulest, the mirror informs the queen that her stepdaughter, Snow White, has now surpassed her in beauty. Driven by envy and anger, the queen orders a hunter to take the girl into the woods to be killed. He decides to spare her life and presents the liver and lungs of a boar to the queen instead of Snow White's. Meanwhile Snow White takes shelter in the house of the seven dwarfs. The scene when the dwarfs return home is reminiscent of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" with the dwarfs asking "Who has taken some of my bread?", "Who has been using my little fork?", and discovering the girl asleep in one of the beds. They allow her to stay. When the queen discovers Snow White is still alive, she tries to get rid of her in a variety of ways: bodice laces that cut one's breath, a poisoned comb and finally a poisoned apple. The fairy tale obviously has a happy ending. There are two scenes in the tale that parents or children might find disturbing. One is when the queen cooks and eats the liver and lungs, thinking they are Snow White's. Second, at the end, when the wicked queen is made to dance in red hot shoes until she falls dead. Other than that the story is well told and the illustrations are magnificent---detailed with rich and vivid colors. I especially liked the one where the queen, disguised as a peddler, is tying Snow White's bodice laces. A wonderul story to add to your child's collection.
