Faetastic! Bring On Book 3!!! V""V

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this from the publisher.

I have been waiting for what seems like an eternity for this book to come get into my hands and I wasn't disappointed. This book is FAETASTIC! OK so yes I may have just made that word up but without giving any spoilers let me just say that as most people know I am a vamp girl through and through but this series is right up there with the House of Comarre and ALL supernatural lovers should get their hands on this series as soon as possible.

The world and the characters are vibrant and really expanded in this sequel which has yet again left me with the need to get my hands on the next book at the earliest opportunity. The only downside? That this is set to be a trilogy. Whilst I have no doubt the author will do a spectacular job of wrapping things up my heart is a little broken that there is only one more installment to come.

Oh and before I finish let me just add that I want my own Fae seamstress STAT! The idea of having clothes that will "adjust" to fit no matter who puts them on ... GENIUS!

A must read, easy 5 out of 5 stars from me!

Chock-full of magic and techie excellence

The second installment in Kristen Painter’s CRESCENT CITY series was more plot than character driven which was a welcomed tweak because my prevailing criticism about book 1 was the heroine. In fact, I re-read my review of HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN before writing this one, and observed that all of the elements that I’d previously gripped over were amended in CITY OF ETERNAL NIGHT which is exactly what you want to see in a sequel. I asked for more fae mythology & less brattiness, and that’s precisely what the author delivered. Harlow did however make one rash decision towards the end which resulted in a super predictable ending, but other than that, I was one happy camper.

This universe is chock-full of magic and techie excellence; the gaming references, neato gadgets, and spelled clothing fed the nerd. I got a kick out of Harlow and Cy’s Realm of Zauron exchanges, the too-cool-for-school contact lens with built-in facial recognition, and that the beautiful dress that’s featured on the cover was described in vivid detail. The author also tackled well-known fae lore such as mirror travel, and the alternate plane which made for some very robust world-building. In addition, the real reason why Branzino (the villain) wants Olivia’s house so bad was explained, and both the witch & voodoo aspects of this story were in evidence as well.

In the earlier chapters I feared that a love triangle was on the brink of developing between Augustine, Nekai & Harlow, but Painter quickly put the kibosh on that which was a relief. I enjoyed this novel’s investigative-style plot line, and how the author used the various characters’ abilities to her advantage to solve the Fairy Queen’s kidnapping case. Lally’s back story was alarming to say the least, and I liked how all of the threads came together to form an exquisitely crafted cohesive whole. I was surprised that the antagonist was subdued this early on, but there are plenty of contenders to take his place, so I’m not the least bit concerned about this trilogy’s staying power.

Harlow finally showed remorse over her mother’s death, and seemed more open to her fae ancestry which were big pluses for me. I liked that she was deeply involved in Guardian business; it kept her character looking forward instead of wallowing in self-pity. I’m content with how her relationship with Augustine is progressing, and found that their chemistry was much improved in this installment. The only thing that stopped this from being an A+ read were the closing chapters; the heroine was quick to jump the gun after acquiring new info which in turn led to an ending that prompted more than one I-told-you-so moment. I hope this lamentable mistake won’t take all of book 3 to repair.

Kristen Painter’s fae were a head above the rest in CITY OF ETERNAL NIGHT—I ❤ this world!

Full of fantastic magic! I'm loving this series!

House of the Rising Sun was one of my favorite books of the year, so this sequel had some pretty big shoes to fill. I didn't like it quite as much, but I certainly wasn't disappointed. City of Eternal Night picks up about a week later with Harlow and Augustine starting to get adjusted to their new roles - his as Guardian of the city and hers as a Fae living in New Orleans.

It's almost Mardi Gras and the Fae are preparing for the Exemplar Krewe Ball. The ball features the symbolic kidnap and ransoming of the Faery Queen, kind of like the Fae version of the Homecoming Queen, who is the daughter of Loudreaux, the head of the Elektos, the Fae city council, and not Augustine's biggest fan. But her kidnapping turns out to be real and the ransom demand is Augustine's death.

Before everything goes wrong, though, the masquerade ball is absolutely wonderful. I love the elaborate magical costumes that adjust themselves to the wearer - that's Harlow's Mother Nature dress on the cover. There's even a magical cocktail created especially for the ball. Between the Fae and the witches, this book features some really fantastic magic.

At the same time, Augustine's still trying to solve the murder of one of the Guardian's lieutenants from the last book. His investigation once again leads him to Giselle and the witches, who are still up to some political scheming. One of the things Kristen Painter does especially well is create villains who are not exactly sympathetic, but understandable. Giselle reminds me of Tatiana from the House of Comarre series in that sense. She's certainly misguided and I don't want her plot to destroy the Fae to succeed, but I also kind of want to be happy for her when she gets a new boyfriend.

I really love the supporting cast in this series! It's so much fun to see Augustine's lieutenants Cy and Neikos explain their powers to Harlow and to learn about Fae magic and traditions. Lally reveals some of her secrets too and I was pretty proud of myself for having part of it figured out. Fans of the Comarre series will also recognize some familiar faces in this one.

I know some readers didn't like Harlow in the first book, though I just thought she was sheltered and naïve, rather than self-centered, but I promise she's better. She gets to show off some of her hacker skills which makes her feel grown up and useful, to herself and to me, and she starts to come out of her shell and make some friends.

My biggest complaint is that Augustine and Harlow both spent a lot of time at the beginning of the book thinking about whether they should pursue their feelings for each other. It's YA-level relationship angst that just seems out of place to me. It also made for kind of a slow start.

But once it got going, I really enjoyed the story. There's a plot twist I never expected and a cliffhanger ending. I can't wait to see what happens in the next one.

I think that this book is a great book and everyone who is an Iron Man lover ...

My name is Rhys and I am a 10 year old kid who has read this book. I think that this book is a great book and everyone who is an Iron Man lover should read it. The book includes Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 2. This book is about a rich, smart, man called Tony Stark. He has a lab in his basement and creates a bunch of super-high-tech stuff. One day he is at a meeting in the desert in Afghanistan and he gets captured by a terrorist group who wants a bunch of his nuclear missiles. He tells them the stuff he needs, but instead of making the missiles, he makes the first Iron Man suit, and that changes his life forever. I think kids ages 8-12 would enjoy this book. I love all of the action and all of the dumb things that Tony Stark says. This book is a well written book. The author, Alex Irvine, has done a good job. I hope that there will be an Iron Man 3 book so that I can read it. There are books related to this such as, Captain America, The Hulk, and Thor. I suggest you read all of them.

This well done, chapter-book version of the Iron Man backstory is a jewel and a half. Unlike most milquetoast adaptations, this one finally does the superhero justice, pulling few punches, while also being aware of the sensibilities and vocabulary of the mid-to-late-elementary-school set. My 8-year-old, who **isn't** the biggest superhero fanboy in the universe, just plowed through this like it wasn't there. He had a wording question every few chapters ("Mom, what's "quiet reserve"?), showing me that Mr. Irvine is helping him pick up some juicy vocal nuggets along the way. My son is now greatly looking forward to _Thor_, and we hope Mr. Irvine has plans for a Spider-Man, too!

Nice Adaptation - much better than the usual

This novelization series is quite good. The story is well paced and well plotted, the vocabulary is challenging, and cover art is nice. My eight year old son is reading these now (too young to see the movies) and enjoys them very much. I buy a lot of books for our school's library (I'm a librarian) and these make the cut.

Genuine characters juggle their big sisters, step-mothers, and cheek- pinching aunts in this collection of family-centered poems. While Fathers, Mothers, Sisters, Brothers entertains young readers with situational humor and sprightly rhyme, selections such as "Half-Whole-Step" and "When Annie Was Adopted" deviate from its lighthearted verse to celebrate and explore diversity: "I am a half-brother / I am a whole-brother / I am a step-brother / There's just one of me!" Although metaphor is sparse, Mary Ann Hoberman's utilization of natural meter and playful diction spawns vocalization of each line. Readers will smirk and reminisce as they hear, "A not-everyday jacket / That's-not-for-play-jacket / A do-as-I-say jacket." Fathers, Mothers, Sisters, Brothers: A Collection of Family Poems by Mary Ann Hoberman is a specialized poetry book containing twenty-six different lyric and narrative poems all focusing on different aspects of families and their lives. The poems throughout the book are structured differently some structures include are: couplets, quatrains, and free verse. Each poem has different sound patterns, examples of sound pattern in some of the poems are: onomatopoeias, rhyme and assonance, and rhythm. All the poems describes an experience from a child's point of view to help the children gain meaning and understanding of different families. This book includes something that all different types of families can relate to. Marylin Hafner's illustrations provide pictures to help children gain a better understanding of the text and add comical entertainment to interest the children.

I just love this book. There is only one caveat, and that's a sad poem about being a child of divorce, but, hey, that's reality and if it opens the mind of a kid whose parents are married, maybe not a bad thing.

Combining the two in The Physics of Christmas is his attempt to refute the notion that "the materialist insights of science destroy our capacity to wonder, leaving the world a more boring and predictable place." To that end, Highfield presents an amusing, eclectic, and trivia-filled collection of scientific observations about one of the Western world's most beloved holidays.

Contrary to the title, Highfield doesn't limit himself to physics. His anthropological observations include tracing the origins of Santa Claus--an especially amusing and enlightening chapter entitled "Santa: The Hallucinogenic Connection" examines the possibilities of the psychoactive mushroom Amanita muscaria's red-and-white cap being the inspiration for Santa's robes. In a tip of the stocking cap to biology, Highfield hints at a parasitic infestation that may be responsible for poor Rudolph's red nose and examines the advantages of cloned Christmas trees. Psychologically speaking, we find an analysis of the emotional weight of gift giving and card exchanging (sever all relationships with those who send musical cards, research suggests), and how a holiday can be both religious and commercial. This is a wonderful gift book, even better to own (but it is clearly a seasonal read). The author is a scientist of wonderfully broad knowledge, and he puts all of it to work to examine and evaluate virtually all of the things that mean "Christmas" to the western world: from formulae for estimating the cooking time for a plum pudding, to the history and derivation of Santa, to why evergreens stay green, and beyond. Did you know, for example, that there are serious efforts to clone Christmas trees? Or that Santa's reindeer would only have had antlers at Christmas time if they were female, or castrated? The title is a little bit misleading - it is really the various sciences of Christmas, not limited to physics. This is a book for adults or teens - dense with information and fun. There is a wonderful bibliography, too, for further reading on specific subjects, and a helpful index. My only complaint is Rudolph's battery-powered blinking nose built into the hard cover, which not only raises the price of the book but results in a poor quality binding that is not durable. This book should be a "keeper", but the eccentric binding probably limits its life span. That is a shame.

A very amusing book.

The title is a bit misleading. This book is light on the physics while covering many other disciplines, including history, anthropology, sociology, psychology, chemistry (the author is a chemist), biology, and physiology. However, the broad range of topics keeps the reader's interest. The author was also able to keep everything on such a level that a reader with a minimal background in science can appreciate the book.

The Physics of Christmas is a collection of short, bright essays that attempt to explain by means of science - not only physics, but very broadly defined to include anthropology, psychology and sociology as well chemistry and biology - all the wacky things people do during the holidays. No subject is too small for Highfield's enthusiastic scrutiny. He devotes one essay to the reasons Brussels sprouts are bitter; another to the architecture of snowflakes; yet another to the biology of reindeer.
Sampled in small doses, these essays can be fascinating. You may have some dim notion that Santa Claus harks back to St. Nicholas, a holy man from the coast of Turkey. It is less well known that some academics posit that his suit is red because people liked to ingest psychedelic toadstools - "the recreational and ritualistic drug of choice in parts of northern Europe before vodka was imported from the East." Santa's vivid robes, Highfield writes, are thought by some to "honor the red-and-white dot color scheme of this potent mind-altering mushroom." It will be a long time before I forget that the Lapps of northern Scandinavia - who pulverize reindeer horns and market the stuff as an aphrodisiac - actually have a genetic mutation rendering some of the men "unusually virile." Or that a cancer research organization has found that Christmas is the only meal of the year at which most British children eat sufficient amounts of vegetables.
But read more than one or two of Highfield's pieces at a time, and you may find yourself reaching anxiously for another egg nog. Highfield is an engaging writer, with an obvious and endearing passion for his subject. But what he has assembled in this pretty volume is an intimidating mountain of random scientific trivia. Taken as a whole, it is more exhausting than explanatory. Like Christmas cheer - "the fermentation of fruit and grain by the activity of fungi called yeasts" - The Physics of Christmas is enjoyable and delightful science for adults and teens.

YA Fadiman may do for the anecdote what Bartlett did for the quotation. There are over 4000 biographical anecdotes about more than 2000 famous people. The book is international in scope and an entertaining walk through history. People representing all types of occupations are covered, from U.S. presidents to Greek philosophers to entertainers and sports figures. Brief biographical information is given about each person, and sources are given wherever possible. The anecdotes range in spirit from the very moving to the amusing and ridiculous, with the emphasis on the latter two. Typical is the entry under Hank Aaron: "During the 1957 World Series, Yankee catcher Yogi Berra noticed that Aaron grasped the bat the wrong way. 'Turn it around,' he said, 'so you can see the trademark.' But Hank kept his eye on the pitcher's mound: 'Didn't come up here to read. Came up here to hit.' " The arrangement is alphabetical by person, with name and subject indexes. The introduction includes an excellent essay on the definition, history and purpose of anecdotes. Anecdotes are brief stories we like to tell about people, more succinct than gossip and more respectable. Most in this dictionary have been "pilfered" (vii) from other collections, but on the other hand there are an informative introduction, an index of themes, and a bibliography of sources. The anecdotes themselves are arranged under the name of the person they're about. That this is a reference book, however, is doubtful: many of the anecdotes are followed by a cautionary note that they have been told of others as well or are apocryphal, and it's unlikely that much seriously useful biographical information is revealed in them, no matter how entertaining or true. Priceless Anecdotes

This excellent book of anecdotes is a necessary addition to any teacher's library...Or anyone's bookshelf who does any speaking at all. A good anecdote
tells you more about a person than a whole volume of factual material...And this book if full of interesting, often humorous stories. I love this book. Thanks, Amazon!

Worth Reading

This is a pretty interesting book. I have both the paperback and the Kindle version. The only fault I find with the paperback is the use of French phrases in some of the anecdotes with, in a number of cases, no translation to English. As for the Kindle version, the editing is atrocious, but a reader who is actually fluent in the English language should have no trouble deciphering what is meant.

I own four copies of this book: A nice hardback for the shelf, a softcover to leave in the guest room, a rather shop-worn softcover to lend, and an ebook for my kindle. I read lots of other things, of course, but I always come back to this lovely, delightful book. I envy you if you are discovering this for the first time.
