About the Author
Karen Green is an artist and writer living and working in Northern California. Her most recent book, Bough Down, was awarded the 2013 Believer Poetry Prize. Ms. Green married David Foster Wallace in 2004 and is cotrustee of the David Foster Wallace Literary Trust.

David Foster Wallace was born in Ithaca, New York, in 1962 and raised in Illinois, where he was a regionally ranked junior tennis player. He received bachelor of arts degrees in philosophy and English from Amherst College and wrote what would become his first novel, The Broom of the System, as his senior English thesis. He received a masters of fine arts from University of Arizona in 1987 and briefly pursued graduate work in philosophy at Harvard University. His second novel, Infinite Jest, was published in 1996. Wallace taught creative writing at Emerson College, Illinois State University, and Pomona College, and published the story collections Girl with Curious Hair, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, Oblivion, the essay collections A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again, and Consider the Lobster. He was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship, a Lannan Literary Award, and a Whiting Writers' Award, and was appointed to the Usage Panel for The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. He died in 2008. His last novel, The Pale King, was published in 2011.

This book is a rare edition of David Foster Wallace's oeuvre, a memoriam or epitaph of his greatest works after he died a tragic suicidal death. One of the greatest American writers of all time, and a true genius, Wallace spent his years writing to speak for those who couldn't speak for themselves and devoting his life to the impoverished and disabused. He was born and raised in Illinois and played on the tennis team in middle school. Attending college, he got a B.A. in philosophy and English and went on to get an M.F.A. In Creative Writing. He.married Karen Green, his wife, in 2004. Wallace spent his life writing beautiful works of fiction and nonfiction, trying to analyze, observe, and reform the world around him whilst teaching and inspiring his students of literature (as he was a professor of literature at the University of Illinois) to become social reformers themselves. Known as the 'Grammar Nazi' by the U-Illinois student populace, Wallace's alias was a misnomer, bidding him injustice. He was actually devoted to changing society. With his quick wit and philosophical sagacity, Wallace changed the world with his writing, inspiring many writers and activists across the nation. Yet Wallace was depressed throughout his life, so he died a tragic death, committing suicide after finding no meaning, leaving his wife devastated. Yet, if Karen Green were to read this, she should know that her husband, a genius and a compassionate soul, did not die in vain, for he inspired many people, and I, a writer, happen to be one of the many. I take great joy and pleasure in reading Wallace's work. He has touched my heart, kindled my imagination, and inspired me to write well. His sacrifices have inspired me to pursue the same ambitions and motivations he sought after in the first place, and his work truly edifies the literary imagination and stimulates the ideals we hold true for social justice. Karen, if you are reading this, I want you to know that your husband was a great man. He died not in vain, but as a hero--a hero who will forever live in my heart. About the Author
Stefany Shaheen has dedicated herself to making life better for people living with diabetes. A Harvard graduate, she launched a company to help those with chronic conditions better manage eating and exercise. She is on the Board of Trustees at Joslin Diabetes Center, served as the National Chair for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Children's Congress, and currently serves on the Foundation's Research and Advocacy Committee. She is a key spokesperson for her mother, Jeanne Shaheen, U.S. Senator and former New Hampshire Governor, and currently serves on the City Council for the City of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she and her husband, Craig Welch, live with their four children.

A must read for type 1 families

My daughter is a type 1 diabetic who was feeling very alone & different (I think all girls feel this way at 13 but she focused on her diabetes as the problem).

A friend from high school who is also a type 1 recommend this as a good read for my kiddo. She was right!

She enjoyed the book so much that she suggested it to her endocrinologist.

We will keep this book around.. No donation box for this one :)

A wonderful story of hope and possibility!

My pre-ordered copy of Elle & Coach arrived on the 25th. Late that afternoon I decided to take a quick scan through the pages. Instead of spending a few minutes, I ended up reading the entire book! Elle's story is well written and very engaging. I felt the stress, exhaustion, fear, determination, love, hope and acceptance Elle, and the family, experienced in dealing with the disease of type 1 diabetes. As I was reading, multiple times I found myself saying to my spouse "You've just got to hear this one little part" and then sharing excerpt after excerpt about Elle's dramatic changes in blood sugar levels, her tenacity with theatre performances and the miracle of Coach becoming part of her life. I appreciate a book that educates and informs me as well as expands my heart. This book definitely qualifies. It's a wonderful story of hope and possibility. I highly recommend this book.

Lazy research, riddled with inaccuracies, devoid of insight

It appears that Mr. Norman hasn't updated his research since writing SHOUT! all those years ago. This book reflects none of the new information uncovered by Mark Lewisohn. Norman doggedly recounts the accepted but now discredited mythology of George Martin signing The Beatles to Parlophone. He repeats the accusation that the publishers Ardmore and Beechwood did nothing to promote "Love Me Do", when in fact Kim Bennett expended a great deal of effort in getting the record played on BBC and Radio Luxembourg while George Martin, who didn't like or believe in the record, did nothing to promote it.
Norman describes Geoff Emerick as having been involved in all Beatle EMI recordings from their first session in June 1962 until Emerick left during the White Album sessions. Emerick did indeed work as a tape operator in a few of the earliest recordings and a smattering of sessions afterwards, but he was by no means involved in every session or album. It wasn't until Norman Smith decided not to engineer The Beatles' recordings and George Martin tapped Emerick to take his place during spring of 1966 that Emerick was regularly involved in each session.
A shocking inaccuracy occurs as Norman recounts George Harrison's quitting the band during the Get Back sessions. Those tapes have been available online for years, and the walkout occurred on January 10, 1969 following a disagreement between John and George while they were at lunch. The group returns from lunch and George is heard to say, "I'll be leaving the band now." John asks when, and George replies, "Now" and walks out. Rather than researching or listening to this recording of the session, Norman relies on the released Let It Be film, stating that George walked out after a disagreement with Paul over Paul's telling George what to play. This disagreement occurred a couple of days earlier, so Norman has the wrong argument, on the wrong day, for the wrong reasons, apparently unaware that the factual information is readily available, and has been for decades. This is shoddy, lazy research.
These are a bare handful of the many inaccuracies in the book. They are shockingly numerous.
Norman's editorial opinions show even less insight. Noting George Harrison's ragged 1974 tour and disappointing Dark Horse album, Norman states that it had become clear that what little talent Harrison had apparently rubbed off from John and Paul. Apparently, Harrison's 1987 artistic and commercial success Cloud Nine, his work with Traveling Wilburys, and his posthumously released masterpiece Brainwashed, either don't count or Norman hasn't heard.
While reading about times in McCartney's life about which I know little, I'm reluctant to put any stock in what is being written.
Norman is correct that McCartney is deserving of a definitive biography. Sadly, Norman chose not to make the effort of producing one.

Norman glows about Paul while dismissing George

Philip Norman, in his 3rd Beatle-related biography, has proven that he is unable to write about one Beatle without diminishing another. He all but eliminates George Harrison from the story of McCartney’s life. When Harrison is mentioned, it is often in a way that belittles his role in the Beatles, dismisses his talent, and misinterprets his character. In discussing the Beatles’ interest in transcendental meditation, Norman describes Harrison as “leaving behind most of his sense of humour.” And later, in the 1970s, he says “it was becoming clear that whatever talent George possessed had largely rubbed off them [Lennon and McCartney] and, without their stimulus, was already fading fast.” These statements are not merely unnecessary, they also show a gross misunderstanding of Harrison as a man and musician.

Unlike some other reviewers, I actually applaud Norman’s decision to not detail every event of the Beatles’ career during the 60s, but rather to focus on McCartney’s personal life during that time. For one thing, this is a biography of the man, not of the band. But also, the story of the Beatles has been told in great detail by so many writers before. That said, there was very little new information—or even old information with a new perspective—in the first 400 pages.

As Norman states in the introduction, this is the first “serious” biography of McCartney that covers his entire career. Because of that, I was primarily interested in the discussion of his post-Beatles life. Norman does a good job of detailing McCartney’s philanthropic work and giving an overview of his musical career after 1970, but it still doesn’t feel like it is quite enough. And often the weight he puts on certain aspects of McCartney’s life seems out of balance. For instance, Norman devotes approximately 100 pages to the seven years McCartney was married to Heather Mills. This leaves 300 pages for the other 35+ years. The McCartney-Mills relationship/debacle was certainly an important, if difficult, period in his recent life, but that ratio seems out of proportion to the importance of Wings, Linda, the Anthology, etc.

If you have never read a book about McCartney or the Beatles before, this is a reasonable place to start. If, however, you are looking for new insights or a fresh perspective on the man or the band, you probably need to look elsewhere.

Pretty mediocre. Toward the end a major slog - all the details of his divorce etc. Zzzzzzz. The guy's Lennon book was better but that one wasn't great either. Never seemed to put much energy into analysing/explaining at length the relationship Paul had with the individuals in the group - during its existence and after. Very little on that put endless drivel about stuff that most people aren't really going to care much about - like the Liverpool Institute project. Great project but not looking for a lot of detail on it. Want to know what the relationships were really like. Positives: it did shed light on Paul's immersion in all things artistic/cultural in the mid 60s - things he never got full "credit" for. Also learned more about Linda and she certainly comes off smelling like a Red Rose Speedway for sure.

Readers who complain that there's too much wisecracking and cute icon worship in Robert Crais's books about Los Angeles private eye Elvis Cole will be glad to find these traits downplayed (but not totally disappeared) in this story about Cole's search for a missing printer whose specialty is funny money. The book is centered by the presence of the printer's three children--especially the motherly 15-year-old Teri and the obnoxious 12-year-old Charles--who hire Elvis from the phone book. Cole, hoping to become the stepfather of the son of his own lady love, gets sucked in by the children's combination of need and family unity, and soon finds himself in the middle of a shooting war between Russian gangsters, Vietnamese patriots, and ambiguous Federal agents. Crais' Elvis Cole novels have become a first-rate example of the double-tough-guy series. Robert B. Parker's Spenser and Hawk still define the subgenre, but Elvis and Joe Pike aren't far behind. Double tough guys can be counted on for at least one ferocious fight per novel, but along the way, there's plenty of banter from our hero and usually a few meaningful Gary Cooper^-like monosyllables from his sidekick. Elvis supplies the banter and Joe the monosyllables with aplomb in this account of a master counterfeiter's last hurrah. The counterfeiter has problems: the Russian Mafia is after him, he's dying of cancer, and he has three kids to provide for. The oldest, Teri, a feisty 15-year-old, asks Elvis to help find Dad, who's off trying to set up a final score. Proving they have hearts of tough-guy gold, Elvis and Joe come to the kids' aid, outmuscling and outsmarting the Russian thugs in a bizarre Disneyland finale. This is straight formulaic fare, but the tough guys are as endearing as they are invincible, and the insider information about high-tech printing is fascinating. Crais doesn't push the genre's envelope, but he works comfortably within its constraints. Hyperion is betting a $250,00 "breakout budget" on this one's marketability, so increased demand is likely. Recommend Elvis and Joe to anyone who likes Spenser and Hawk or Dave Robicheaux and Clete Purcell. Bill Ott

You can't go wrong with Elvis

For me, the mystery of Indigo Slam is why it was out of print for years. Originally published in 1997, it didn't come out in paperback till 2003 (and the hardcover disappeared), while other later Crais novels (including another Cole book) did the usual hardcover-to-paperback cycle and remained on the shelves. Whatever the reason, it's here now and it's really good.
Elvis Cole, self-proclaimed World's Greatest Detective, is hired by three children to find their father. Motivated more by conscience than money, he helps them. When it turns out that the father is on the run from the Russian mob, Elvis starts getting in over his head. Fortunately, there is his laconic partner Pike to watch his back.
Mystery fans will see a certain similarity between the Cole books and Robert Parker's Spenser. Both feature wise-cracking tough private eyes with mysterious but generally good-hearted partners. Unfortunately, over the years, I found Spenser getting unlikably smug and self-righteous, while Cole remains a pleasure to read about. And both Cole and Pike are much more well-developed than either Spenser or Hawk, neither of whom even reveal their full names (the single-named hero is a bit of a tired gimmick nowadays...Richard Stark's Parker is forgiven because he's been around since the mid-60's).
You don't need to have read other Elvis Cole novels to get into this one; Crais makes it easy to get right into things. For fans of the private-eye novel, you'll find this - like all the other novels by Crais - delightfully entertaining.

Modern PI at its best.

Robert Crais breathes new life into the wisecracking PI genre with his Elvis Cole series. What at first looks like a Spenser clone, becomes fresh and satisfying with Crais' guidance. Cole and his partner Joe Pike find themselves as nursemaids to 3 kids whose father has flown from the care of the witness protection program. What looks to be a case of finding a deadbeat drugged out lowlife takes a turn when the father turns out to be a bit different than Cole's image of him. The fight to save the family brings Cole into conflict with Vietmnamese expatriates, the Russian mob, the Witness Protection Program and the US Treasury. It leads to an exciting chase at Disneyland which guarantees that this book will never be made into a Disney film and a stunning conclusion which puts the family in extreme jeopardy. Write on, Mr Crais, write on.

Indigo Slam is another great Elvis Cole mystery. From the witness protection program, to the Russian mob, to countefeiting, to child neglect. Robert Crais throws all this into his newest Cole novel and more. I thought it was the best of the series so far. With a great plot and characters that are so lifelike, you will have trouble putting this one down. With plenty of action, the author never loses track of where he is going or how he gets there. In these times when most people think a good mystery involes yet another boring serial killer, Robert Crais and Elvis Cole, shows us what a true crime novel is all about. I highly recomend this book to all of you. GOOD READING

About the Author
Scott Blackwood is the author of two previous books of fiction, In the Shadow of Our House and We Agreed to Meet Just Here, and the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award. Negative reviewers missing the mark

I almost never write reviews, but after seeing all of the negative reviews, along with with the poor average rating, I felt compelled to add my two cents.

Let me address some of the common complaints that are being brought up. Some people are saying that there are too many characters to keep track of, and the story line jumps around too much. This perplexes me. For most of the book, there are about six narratives, and once these characters are established, some associated perspectives get thrown in towards the end. All of the characters revolve around the same event, meaning that they all live in the same world together. If you get confused on who exactly someone is, you'll be able to remember based on the context of their story line. If you're a person who takes a month to finish a book (this one's barely over 200 pages), then you might have to jot some notes down, but if you read fairly consistently, you should be fine.

I also don't understand the complaint about the story line jumping around. The characters reflect heavily on the murder that shapes the novel, so there will be some jumping around, but not enough to confuse most readers. In fact, the story line is fairly linear, and when it's not, you'll be able to figure it out.

I believe that part of the problem with some of the other reviewers was that they thought this was going to be a murder mystery, but it most definitely is not. It is about how one singular event can alter so many lives. In fact, you never find out who committed the murders, but that's not the point. It's a haunting, atmospheric novel that one should savor, not fly through. This is not Gone Girl, so don't have those expectations. If you want to read a beautifully written book with wonderful prose, then give it a chance. Don't let the naysayers persuade you.

Confused

The book is a snapshot in the lives of many beginning before the tragedy, followed by the actual tragedy & then the aftermath. I found the book very hard to follow with all the different people explaining their sides & how they were dealing with the loss of these three girls. While some questions were answered the book left a lot unanswered. While I understand the author's reasoning for doing this I feel it leaves me more confused than when I began the book.

Mysterious in a profound way. (Not "a mystery.")

This novel is amazing. I think it's garnered so much attention here and in the UK because it IS innovative in the way experimental novels are, but not innovative for the sake of "play" or in metafictional way. It's innovative because that's the only to tell this realistic story of calamity and its aftermath. I am grateful for a book that was able to depict how the possibility of crippling grief is the price we always pay for love, and sometimes this turns out to be a very unfair bargain. I agree with the NPR reviewer who called this novel "brutally necessary and near-perfect." (And I cringe when people compare it to Alice Sebold--which raises readers' expectations that it will be a supernatural whodunit with dead girls turning into heroines who solve their own murder.) This book steps outside of feel-good genre expectations and their tidy resolutions: mysteries that always get solved; separated loved ones who always get reunited. This book is more true to life than that. It has the courage to say that we sometimes must go on living without answers we want. If you like thrillers and "mystery stories," this is not for you. If you're interested in the mystery of life, death, and love, you will think that this is one of the best novels you've read in years.

About the Author
Hergé, one of the most famous Belgians in the world, was a comics writer and artist. The internationally successful Adventures of Tintin are his most well-known and beloved works. Watch out - Small Size

Watch out, this 3-in-one comes in a smaller size than the regular single adventures. Makes it harder to read and harder to enjoy the graphics.

Size does Matter

Adventures of Tintin are classics so there is no doubt about the content of this book; however you simply CANNOT experience Tintin in this small prints! One of the great things about Herge's Tintin is to pick up that large book with the shiny pages and simple get lost in those amazing vibrant colors and the ligne claire strips! You simple cannot get the same from these 3 in 1 edition. Anyone who has picked up a Tintin or Asterix in its original form knows what I am taking about.

The first three standard adventures of Tintin in Hergé's canon

This is Volume 1 of the seven hardcover collections each other a trio of the Adventures of Tintin written and drawn by Herg'. The first is rather quaint by the overall standard of the series, but it does serve as a clear indication of how much Herge's creation grew over time. There are a pair of even earlier adventures, "Tintin in the Soviet Union" and "Tintin in the Congo," but they are more political and cultural oddities today and not really part of the main Tintin canon (because of the political sympathies of the former and the inherent racism of the latter). Just be aware that once you start here you are going to have to complete your Tintin collection, because this is one of the landmark comic books in history:

"Tintin in America" has our hero coming to America, which is a land of Chicago gangsters and Native Americas. The art here is a bit more cartoonish than what comes later, but the most important difference is that this is basically Tintin and Snowy on their own with the wonderful cast of colorful supporting characters that end up populating the Tintin universe nowhere to be seen at this point. That may explain why Snowy "talks" a lot more in this early Tintin adventure than is his habit in later volumes. This is not a great Tintin adventure, but it is certainly an interesting one because of the way Herge presents America to his readers. Tintin arrives in Chicago to clean up the city ruled by gangster bosses and Al Capone is not happy to see the world famous reporter. Tintin survives so many attempted gangland hits that you lose count of them, and it is a toss up whether there are more last second escapes or scenes where Tintin pulls a gun on a gangster. The perils of Tintin continue even when our hero and his faithful terrier companion make their way out West and become involved with some of the quaint customs of the local natives.

As for "Cigars of the Pharaoh," if your understanding of human history leads you to believe that the Pharaohs did not smoke cigars, then you already have a leg up on the fact that this adventure of Tintin is not what it seems. Our hero is sailing the Mediterranean with Snowy when he encounters a strange academic type named Sophocles Sarcophagus whom he dismisses as a clumsy nitwit. Tintin also has a runin with Rastapopoulos, the film tycoon who owns Cosmos Pictures. The next thing we know we have the first appearance of the Thom(p)soms, who arrest Tintin for having heroin in his cabin. Obviously, our hero is getting to close to something, but what could it be? From an Egyptian tomb filled with cigars, to floating in an coffin on the Mediterranean, to wandering the Arabian desert, to being lost in the jungles of India, Tintin does some major traveling to solve this particular mystery. Herge certainly shows more of an understanding for various cultures than he did in the previous Tintin adventure, but the overall improvement of "Cigars of the Pharaoh" over "Tintin in America" is pretty noticeable and quite impressive when you think of the state of comic books stories in the early 1930s.

"The Blue Lotus" begins where "Cigars of the Pharaoh" left off, with Tintin and Snowy in India as the guests of the Maharaja of Gaipajama. The evil gang of international drug smugglers had been smashed and all of them are now behind bars except for the mysterious leader, who disappeared over a cliff. A visitor from Shanghai is hit with a dart dipped in Rajaijah juice, the poison of madness, which is enough to send our intrepid hero to the Chinese city where his rickshaw runs into Gibbon, an occidental who is not looking where he is going and starts beating the rickshaw driver for daring to barge into a white man. Tintin intervenes, calling the man's conduct disgraceful and Gibbon vows revenge. The next thing we know Tintin is being shot at every time he turns around. Things become even more mysterious when another bystander is hit with a Rajaijah dart and Tintin embarks on a ship for Bombay only to wake up in the home of Wang Chen-yee, who begins to unravel the mystery for our hero.

This Tintin adventure was first published in Belgium in 1934-35, but the story is actually set in 1931, which was when Japanese troops were first occupying parts of China. Herge incorporates several actual events in this narrative, including the blowing-up of the South Manchurian railway, which served as an excuse for further Japanese incursions into China, and led to Japan walking out on the League of Nations. Of course, it is the Japanese invaders who are after Tintin, who is pretty much on his own for most of this adventure until the Thom(p)sons show up with orders to arrest. The title of the story comes form an opium den that figures prominently in the resolution of the tale. "The Blue Lotus" finds Herg' fully committed to providing accurate cultural details in is stories, although this story has the added virtue of being the most "realistic" in terms of portraying current events in a world poised on the brink of war. His drawings of Asian figures can certainly be considered caricatures, but then this is pretty much true of the way he draws everybody in these stories, with the simplistic look of Tintin being the exception that proves the rule.

"The Blue Lotus" is also the adventure in which Tintin meets Chang Choug-chen, a young orphaned Chinese boy our hero saves from drowning. Chang is surprised a white devil would bother to save his life and Tintin haas to explain how not all white men are wicked. The character of Chang is based on Chang Chong-Chen,a young Chinese student who became Herg''s friend in 1934, as is the case with Chang and Tintin, and who would inspired the classic adventure "Tintin in Tibet" in 1960. "The Blue Lotus" is a first rate Tintin adventure, made all the more special because once World War II began Herg' made a concerted effort to distance his stories from the horrors of the real world. After the war Herg' would deal with East-West tensions on a completely fictional level, making this early adventure of more than passing interest in Herge's career. So by the time you get to the final story in this first trio, it should be clear to you that you are reading something special.

About the Author
Sebastian Rotella is the author of Triple Crossing, which the New York Times Book Review named its favorite debut crime novel of 2011, and the nonfiction book Twilight on the Line. He is a senior reporter for ProPublica, a newsroom dedicated to investigative journalism in the public interest. He covers international security issues. He worked for twenty-three years for the Los Angeles Times, serving as bureau chief in Paris and Buenos Aires and the correspondent at the Mexican border. His honors include a Peabody Award; Columbia University's Dart Award and Moors Cabot Prize for Latin American coverage; the German Marshall Fund's Weitz Prize for reporting in Europe; five Overseas Press Club Awards; The Urbino Prize of Italy, and an Emmy nomination. A Good Story at a High Level

I liked Triple Crossing a lot and think that Sebastian Rotella has a lot of good stories in him. I don't think The Convert's Song is one of them, though. Too many holes, the writing doesn't flow, and the dialogue ranges from wooden to somewhat realistic. At a high level, the plot was interesting and I liked the way it was wrapped up, but getting there was problematic.

Without trying to be a spoiler, I don't believe somebody like Raymond would be able to make it to the level where he ended up, I don't believe an American citizen who's not military or law enforcement (Pescatore) would be able to operate as he did throughout the story, I don't believe the high-level French investigator (Belhaj) would allow herself to get into an unprofessional relationship with someone tangential to her operation, I don't believe Valentin could disguise a pistol in an ankle holster among hordes of policemen for as long as he did, I don't believe a sophisticated international terrorist would recruit a partner the way he did... just too many things that didn't make sense to me.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good read and Rotella has a story to tell. I just had problems with the details not adding up for me. I look forward to subsequent books as he seems to have a solid perspective on the gray areas that exist in international relations in today's world.

Can't put this book down! Rotella hits the ball out of the park with his new novel. His writing style, character development and genuine feel for the streets, back alleys, the good and bad guys who work the shadows - makes The Convert's Song a sure best seller! I have Followed Rotella's early writing and more recent ground breaking investigative reporting on the Mumbai terror plot, this great writer knows his subject matter and its subjects well. Bravo! - Josh M.
