Perfectly Puerile
By Count DeRola
This series is juvenile, puerile, trashy, tacky and lowbrow. I love it! It's genuinely laugh out loud funny and extremely sexy at the same time. The art is excellent, the dialogue is clever, and the flimsy concept keeps things moving along even though nothing really happens.

Can anyone recommend another series that's similar to this one? I need to read something while I wait for the next volume....

Classic Prison School
By Kimberly Rice
Hiramoto continues to be a comedic genius. This volume finishes the EBO arc and begins the data retrieval arc. The plot is well-paced, and the humor is fantastic as ever. There's not much I can say about this volume because the next one is going to be legendary, but if you've liked the series up until now, this one will meet your expectations.

It would be nearly impossible for someone not to lose weight and feel better after following these 21 habits. Good entertaining read.. what we hope for

Look I am an avid fantasy reader, this is a refreshing and entertaining series. It doesn't have to be epic to be a great read. I travel globally and kindle books are my long haul flight staple.. consider this a keeper and try it.

The Final Chapter In Possibly The Best Epic Fantasy in Decades
By Douglas C. Meeks
This looks to be the final book in this exceptional series and as with most ending in epic fantasy, it was .... EPIC! Ever since JRR Tolkien laid out the formula for writing epic fantasy it has been loosely followed by all successful writers in the genre for the simple reason it works.

Now while vampires were never part of any epic fantasy I ever read, they played a perfect part in this soaring 2500 page epic. The fact that I did not have to start scanning the books (which I admitted DID in LOTR) was a nice touch, it also made me feel that the cost was well worth it for this 4 book journey.

Blaine is trying to put the finishing touches to the war and establish a lasting peace in this final novel, the way is blocked on all sides by evil mages, evil vampires, monsters and opposing armies all of which leads us to a final epic multi location battle to end this war and it is everything you would hope it would be.

We have the search for the mystical weapon that can help end the war, the promise of a future prosperous kingdom, evil mages that have not been seen before this book with new powers, horrible monsters, ghosts, mage vampire ghosts (yeah, that would be unique in epic fantasy) and a story that you can't help but love with an ending that any fantasy master would be proud of in its warmth.

Bottom Line: Well this review is kind of a review of this book and the 4 books series at the same time, I could go on and on but it was just amazing, it hit all the high marks for epic fantasy, it played on your emotions, it created more than 1 hero even though Blaine is the true main hero here. There is pretty much nothing I can say bad about this book, she does throw you some misdirection when you get to see the machinations of the "evil" side but then you love it when things turn out a bit differently. 5 Stars and hope maybe one day she will revisit this world since there are still a couple of things left open that could be turned into a story.

Very Enjoyable; Story Moves Along
By Living In SoCal
Excellent book for the series. I finished it way too quickly. Does a great job moving the story along and adding more depth to the established characters. Does not do too much rehashing of the previous books in the series. (Looking at you Terry Goodkind!) Very, very enjoyable series.

Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley, by Peter Guralnick

From the moment that he first shook up the world in the mid 1950s, Elvis Presley has been one of the most vivid and enduring myths of American culture.

Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley is the first biography to go past that myth and present an Elvis beyond the legend. Based on hundreds of interviews and nearly a decade of research, it traces the evolution not just of the man but of the music and of the culture he left utterly transformed, creating a completely fresh portrait of Elvis and his world.

This volume tracks the first twenty-four years of Elvis' life, covering his childhood, the stunning first recordings at Sun Records ("That's All Right," "Mystery Train"), and the early RCA hits ("Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel"). These were the years of his improbable self-invention and unprecedented triumphs, when it seemed that everything that Elvis tried succeeded wildly. There was scarcely a cloud in sight through this period until, in 1958, he was drafted into the army and his mother died shortly thereafter. The book closes on that somber and poignant note.

Last Train to Memphis takes us deep inside Elvis' life, exploring his lifelong passion for music of every sort (from blues and gospel to Bing Crosby and Mario Lanza), his compelling affection for his family, and his intimate relationships with girlfriends, mentors, band members, professional associates, and friends. It shows us the loneliness, the trustfulness, the voracious appetite for experience, and above all the unshakable, almost mystical faith that Elvis had in himself and his music. Drawing frequently on Elvis' own words and on the recollections of those closest to him, the book offers an emotional, complex portrait of young Elvis Presley with a depth and dimension that for the first time allow his extraordinary accomplishments to ring true.

Peter Guralnick has given us a previously unseen world, a rich panoply of people and events that illuminate an achievement, a place, and a time as never revealed before. Written with grace, humor, and affection, Last Train to Memphis has been hailed as the definitive biography of Elvis Presley. It is the first to set aside the myths and focus on Elvis' humanity in a way that has yet to be duplicated.

Amazon.com Review
There's no mention of sequins, drugs, or peanut butter in this understated biography of the teenaged Elvis, a serious and worthy attempt to answer the question, "Who was this guy before he was an icon, the voice of a generation, the King?" The essential clarity and honesty of Guralnick's prose clearly limns the eager, malleable boy whose immense talent changed the course of American music.

From Publishers Weekly
Given the passion evident in most books about Elvis Presley (1935-1977), the scrupulously dispassionate tone of this new biography, the first of a projected two volumes, is admirable and startling. Guralnick (Lost Highway) lets the facts speak for themselves, more or less, by providing solid background and quoting at length from people who knew Elvis as well as the contemporary press. In retelling the familiar story of a poor Southern boy's meteoric rise to unprecedented fame, Guralnick eschews the conventional wisdom-Elvis was an instinctive artist whose career was trashed by his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, and by movie and record company executives-to present a more complex picture. He shows those associated with Elvis struggling to get a handle on a new music form, rock 'n' roll, that they barely understood. At times, one wishes the author were more open about his own opinions. But this welcome relief from the hysterical tone of most Elvis books closes somberly with the performer's induction into the Army and the death of his beloved mother in 1958. Photos. Author tour.

Another work on Presley? Since Guralnick is "one of the best, most respected popular music historians" in the business (Sweet Soul Blues Music, LJ 6/1/ 86), this could be good.

Elvis 101
By Amazon Customer
"Last Train to Memphis" and its sequel, "Careless Love", make a deeply engrossing, carefully researched, finely written biography of Elvis Presley.
Author Peter Guralnick took eleven years to exhaustively research sources and interview people who knew Elvis personally and would tell their firsthand experiences. Guralnick's scholarly approach automatically eschews any hint of the fan adoration that can taint celebrity biographies. Guralnick might even have erred on the dry side rather than the juicy or dishy side of the story. This is all to the good, because Elvis' life story, a fantastic, zany, epic arc through American pop culture, is one that needs no embellishment and is served well by a measure of journalistic restraint.
Guralnick made a wise choice with the two-book format, because in Elvis' life there was a distinct "Rise and Fall." "Last Train to Memphis" is the rise: "Careless Love" is the fall. In each volume, Guralnick reveals much not just about Elvis, but about the people who were his family and closest friends and how their actions and relationships to him and to each other shaped Elvis into the man he became.
Accounts of his school days, his early days as a musician, his early girlfriends, and his family life all flesh him out as a human being and penetrate the shell of celebrity to offer a three-dimesional glimpse of the individual and his own ideas and aspirations and insecurities. The first volume ends with the death of Elvis' mother, a loss that sent him into the first tailspin of many, from which he never seemed to recover.
After reading this volume, you will be hooked on the story and will want to immediately begin the second volume, which is much darker and sadder as the King's world starts to unwind, chronicling his spiraling drug habit and his battles both public and personal. The second volume is catalogued and reported as dispassionately as the first, so that the same unblinking honesty that gave "Last Train" such sparkle and joy reveals the true depth of Elvis' isolation without having to resort to hyperbole.
Guralnick said it himself; that the rise to fame and the person were larger than life, and so too was the decline larger than life. It's an ending that leaves you feeling sad that what began so brightly should end so awfully.
I read these books because I knew very little about Elvis and wanted to know his life story, and they are a deeply satisfying and very credible account of the King's life. I can't imagine that there is a better bio out there for anyone who wants to study Elvis 101.

Some People Actually Think He's Dead...
By A. Wolverton
But it's not true...Elvis DOES live...in the pages of Guralnick's outstanding biography of Elvis Presley, a biography that will stand the test of time as the definitive study of the King of Rock n Roll.
In Volume One, Guralnick takes us from Elvis' humble beginnings in Tupelo, Mississippi to his departure for Army duty in Germany twenty-three years later. In between, readers will be fascinated with what they THOUGHT they knew about Elvis. LAST TRAIN differs from other books about Elvis in two very distinct ways: First, the author gives us first hand accounts from the people who were actually there. There's no tabloid journalism or second-hand anecdotes. Guralnick has done his research and it shows. Second, Elvis is never presented as an icon or an idol. Guralnick has the unique ability to step back away from the action as an impartial observer and give us an extraordinarily clear image of what Elvis was really like - a really nice, clean, religious kid who was consumed with music and making people happy.
You can almost feel the electricity of the recording sessions at Sun Studios. You can watch Sam Phillips as he realizes that this boy could change the course of popular music forever. Elvis' girls, friends, musicians...they're all here and they all have a piece of the story to tell. And what about the "Colonel" Tom Parker? Genius or huckster?
Of course, the hysteria is recorded as well. After all, it's part of the story. Crazed fans were nothing new. After all, girls had been going nuts over singers like Frank Sinatra and many others for years. But the world had never seen anything like this? How can you explain it? Guralnick never really comes right out with an explanation, but you'll be able to pick it up between the lines. But you'll enjoy the book so much in the process, all you'll care about is what happens next.
The writing, the storytelling, the descriptions...it's all outstanding. But if I had to pick two moments that really struck me, one would be Elvis near his popularity peak looking out of a train window. He saw a lone dog running in a field and longed for the freedom to roam the world unhindered by masses of admirers. It's a very simple, but powerful image of things to come. The other is the [end of life] of Elvis' mother near the end of the first volume. In one of the most heartbreaking scenes I've ever read, Elvis kneels beside his deceased mother's body, crying out that he would give up all of his success and go back to digging ditches if he could only have her back again. If you have dry eyes at the end of this book, your heart needs to be jumpstarted.
Like all good writers, Guralnick expertly foreshadows the tragic events that will take place in Volume Two. Even if you think you know the full Elvis story, you'll learn plenty by reading this book. The only bad part about finishing Volume One is not having a copy of Volume Two nearby. Buy both. You won't be sorry.

great bio
By Orrin C. Judd
Peter Guralnick demonstrated in his definitive history of Soul music, Sweet Soul Music : Rhythm and Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom, that he has a nearly unique grasp of the singular way in which popular music and the political culture intersect in American society. Along with Robert Palmer (Deep Blues) and Greil Marcus (Mystery Train), he has helped to craft a still pretty slender body of literature which takes pop music and its impact seriously, but also places it within a larger societal context. Now, in his two part biography of Elvis Presley, he has set out to strip away both the mythology (Volume One) and the demonology (Volume Two) that obscure Elvis and to restore some reasonable sense of perspective on the man and his music. In so doing, he offers us a new and useful opportunity to understand the personal and societal forces that converged to make him into The King, one of the genuine cultural icons of the 20th Century, and to trigger the Rock & Roll Era.
There are several main factors that Guralnick cites, which appear to have had a particular influence on how events transpired. First is the city of Memphis itself, which served as a nearly perfect crucible for forging the blend of Gospel, Country, Blues and Rhythm & Blues that made up Elvis's sound. A southern city, but not Deep South, there was at least limited interaction between the white and black worlds. But most importantly for this story, the city was saturated with music. Second, Sam Phillips, owner of his own fledgling Sun Records operation, was on the scene looking for a white act that could bring the black sound to a mass audience:
Sam Phillips possessed an almost Whitmanesque belief not just in the nobility of the American dream but in the nobility of that dream as it filtered down to its most downtrodden citizen, the Negro. 'I saw--I don't remember when, but I saw as a child--I thought to myself: suppose that I would have been born black. Suppose that I would have been born a little bit more down on the economic ladder. I think I felt from the beginning the total inequity of man's inhumanity to his brother. And it didn't take its place with me of getting up in the pulpit and preaching. It took the aspect with me that someday I would act on my feelings, I would show them on an individual, one-to-one basis.'
Finally, there was the man, actually he was more of a boy at the beginning, Elvis Presley. And Elvis was himself the product of several forces. There was the impoverished kind of white trash milieu from which Elvis came and which gave him a sense of alienation and otherness. As Phillips said of him:
He tried not to show it, but he felt so inferior. He reminded me of a black man in that way; his insecurity was so markedly like that of a black person.
Then there was his mother, Gladys, who--in addition to raising him to be polite, respectful, humble, even deferential--also gave him unconditional love, bordering on worship, which he returned in kind. These forces combined, as so often seems to be the case, to make him insecure on the one hand, particularly in the manner in which he approached and dealt with people, but, on the other, left him burning with an inner certainty that he was special and was meant to accomplish great things.
All of these forces combined into a volatile mix in the Sun recording studios on July 5, 1954. Phillips had brought Elvis in to work with a couple of local musicians, Scotty Moore and Bill Black, because he wanted them to do some ballads and Elvis had done some demos there, which Philips was not overwhelmed by but he thought Elvis had some potential as a ballad singer. The session was pretty desultory, if not downright unsuccessful, until that inevitable, now mythical, moment when during a break Elvis started fooling around doing Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's old blues tune "That's All Right [Mama]". Phillips, initially shocked that this quiet white mama's boy even new the song, immediately recognized that this was just the type of thing that he had been looking for and got them to record it.
All of the tumblers had clicked into place. It was the nature of Memphis that Elvis and Sam had been exposed to, more like drenched in, the music of the black community. Sam happened to be looking for someone who could transport that music and, most importantly, the style and atmospherics of the music, into the white community. And in walks Elvis, that quintessential hybrid of insecurity and manifest destiny.
If success did not come overnight it did come quickly and Guralnick masterfully charts the meteoric rise that took them up the charts and took Elvis to television and then to Hollywood. This first volume also sees Colonel Parker take over from Sam, the purchase of Graceland, the eventual breakup of the original band, the death of Elvis's mother and his induction into the Army. Guralnick makes it all seem fresh and exciting, carrying the reader along on the tide of events. An incredible number of famous names stud the narrative and prove to have significant roles to play, including: Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Snow, B.B. King, Sammy Davis, Jr., Eddy Arnold, Bill Monroe, Steve Allen, Milton Berle and, of course, Ed Sullivan. This is a great biography, one that should especially appeal to folks whose only image of Elvis is the fat, sweaty, drug-addled lounge lizard of popular caricature.

From Library Journal
Hellman's 1973 title was the second of three volumes of memoirs written after she had dried up as a playwright. These remembrances have come under fire by many who claim she lifted some of these stories from others, such as the famous "Julia" chapter upon which the film was based, and completely invented others. Whether fact or fiction, begged, borrowed, or stolen, who cares? This book makes for great reading.

The Infamous Miss Hellman
By Gary F. Taylor
Lillian Hellman's PENTIMENTO, A loose collection of autobiographical essays and stories, has been both controversial and famous, and very specifically so for "Julia." In this particular tale, Hellman describes her attempt to aid a friend by smuggling money to support anti-Nazi efforts in 1930s Germany--and subsequently finding herself unable to protect Julia from the ferocity of the Nazi machine. Powerfully written, it is the centerpiece of the book, and in 1977 was adapted into a very popular and much-praised film starring Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave.

It was at this point, however, that controversy arose. The film caught the attention of Muriel Gardner, who promptly asserted that she was 'Julia' and the story itself was significantly based on her own life and work in pre-World War II Germany. She also stated that she had never met Lillian Hellman--but it transpired that she and Hellman had at one time shared the same attorney, who was well aware of her past and who could have described it to Hellman.

Hellman flatly stated that Gardner was not 'Julia' and insisted that the story, while altered re details and circumstances to protect the identities of those involved, was indeed factual. As more details of Gardner's life came to light, however, it seemed increasingly likely that Hellman had indeed made use of it in creating the story, and the dispute continues to provoke strong feelings even some thirty years after the deaths of both Hellman and Gardner.

It was not the first time Hellman had been accused of literary fraud and it would not be last. During her long love affair with novelist Dashiell Hammett, Hellman was frequently accused of draining his ideas to further her own work. In 1979 writer and critic Mary McCarthy prompted a suit for slander when she described Hellman's work by saying "every word she writes is a lie, and that includes 'and' and 'the!'" But regardless of how Hellman came by her ideas, there is no getting around the fact that she had the gift: at her best, she was the equal of the best of the best, turning out several masterpiece dramas and three autobiographical works that jolted best seller lists from end of the country to the other.

PENTIMENTO is the second of these autobiographies, published in 1973 between the equally famous UNFINISHED WOMAN (1969) and SCOUNDREL TIME (1976.) And although "Julia" remains the most famous--or perhaps most infamous--work in the collection, Hellman is actually at her finest in the other stories she tells, most particularly those that center on her childhood home of New Orleans.

In both these writings and others, Hellman shows a remarkable gift for capturing place, time, and character, zeroing in on her New Orleans family, her lover Hammett, and the legendary Tallulah Bankhead to name but a few. From the lunacy of personalizing condoms in Hollywood to the drunken jitters of opening night on Broadway, Hellman makes you see it, feel it, touch it, taste it. It is a brilliant accomplishment--and if you suspect that the stories on which she hangs these talents are at best misrecalled, at worst deliberate falsifications--is this not, after all, what we demand that writers do? Recast reality in order to spin a good story? Strongly recommended.

A Woman's Life: Real Stuff
By Deborah Martinson
Pentimento is a brilliant--and entertaining--portrait of a woman's life seen through the doubleness of "then and now." Hellman sketches the people within her life, now housed in her memory. Although dubbed a memoir, it transcends a mere record of Lillian Hellman's life and portrays instead the way in which a woman's history merges with the memory of it. Each chapter is a portrait of someone or something symbolically important, and each is written in a different style reflecting its content and theme. Not history, not autobiography, not fiction, Hellman tried instead to get the feeling of her life right, to find something individual and universal. Drama, humor, tragedy--it's here, and it's important.

(Some of) O.J.'s side of the story
By Marc Dalesandro
In reviewing this book, I am not going to get into matters of Simpson's guilt or innocence. I'm simply writing this review for those O.J. trial fans who might want to purchase it to get a different perspective on the crimes.

My opinion? You probably shouldn't bother. There are numerous books out there written by members of the Dream Team that can give you the perspective from the "he was innocent" camp. This book is merely O.J. trying to raise money for his defense (he admits it in the book). Because "I Want To Tell You" came out *before* the trial, there is really no information about the legal side of things or about the trial itself.

Also, since O.J. hadn't gone to trial yet, there was much he couldn't discuss on his lawyers' orders. So, you get watered-down protestations of innocence, but very little specific info.

Skip this book unless you want to hear O.J. protest (feebly) his innocence without any real arguments at all backing up his claims.

Then tell us something of substance
By Steve Anderson
It causes educated people the world over no end of amusement at the power O.J. Simpson has over his fans. I recently bought this book for $2.98 at a local bookstore and when I finished it, three hours later, I felt I had paid too much. I have read every book published thus far on the Simpson case and I was hoping that in this self-promotional pamphlet I would find O.J. answering some of the difficult questions concerning his case. He did not. I stand speechless when I hear adult persons, people who can drive a car, and go on dates, and check out books from the library, adult persons say with a straight face that they know in their heart that O.J. is an innocent man. I think in the future this case will not be looked at as a courtroom travesty, nor will it be studied as a mirror of the racial climate in America. I sincerely believe that future sociologists will look at this case and attempt to figure out how America could have ANYONE with so little educational skills that they would believe that someone else was guilty for this crime. This book illustrates how easily people can be fooled when they think with their skin rather than with their brains. Let's throw I.Q. tests out the window. Let's do away with the S.A.T. and A.C.T. tests. Lets trash the College Board examinations and simply ask individuals: "Do you think O.J. is guilty or innocent." The answer that follows will REALLY reveal a person's educational abilities and previous attention to serious study and logical thought.

Lies, whole lies, and nothing BUT lies

This book is clearly the most narcissistic piece of FICTION ever printed. The killer tells us about his glory days as a football player and his "wonderful" life with poor Nicole, conveniently omitting his no contest plea to spousal abuse and eschewing references to the 8 times Nicole called the police to settle their domestic disputes. But the most glaring omission in this trashy, exploitive book is a confession, a failure to spot the blood which will drip from his hands to the end of his offensive existence, and a complete blindness to his obvious guilt.

Rousing old fashioned pirate adventure
By microjoe
A book that is listed at reading level for 12 years and up, but I thoroughly enjoyed it at 42. This book was awarded the Newberry Medal in 1923. A tale of 17th English century life at sea, it is a rousing and realistic story. The author spent years researching ships logs, sailing accounts, and the life stories of many sailing men to get the proper flavor for his tale. A reviewer complained about the old fashioned language, but I think any book about a period in time does a disservice to young people by avoiding using the authentic accents, terminology, and phrasing of the time. To not do so is to rob the reader of the experience of joining the adventure and falling into the story completely. I think that classic period books that have been abridged into modern-speak to make them easier to read are simply talking down to readers and underestimating their capacity and curiosity to learn.

The plot is an adventure of a young man that has been on ships since he was a toddler, and the horrible and good people he interacts with after a horrible accident on land with a gun makes him a fugitive. He goes to the place he knows best, the sea. He joins a ship that is later seized by pirates. Forced to cooperate or die, he unwillingly joins them in operating the vessel but refuses to participate in their bloodthirsty pursuits. And there is action galore, storms, sea battles between ships, attacks on forts, sword fights, cannon fire, you name it.

The characters are interesting and multi-faceted, not gray cutouts but realistic... A woman in a tavern is kind and generous in the beginning, but as soon as she has nothing to gain for her kindness she turns on him viciously. A pirate leader is cold and cruel but points he "bears no ill will", like a mafia don stating before he kills that it is nothing personal, just business. And many characters are not what they seem at first. Our young hero manages to survive day by day with his own cunning, and turn the dark situation to his own gain to escape, clear his name, and discover surprising things about his own ancestors. The plot switches and turns many times, always with a new surprise around the bend. A very enjoyable story, I highly recommend.

By the way, if you have a child or adult that wants to be able to look up the sailing terminology in many of the sea tales (what's a mizzen for example), or simply wants to read more books like this one, try one of the books in my recommendations list at Amazon that has definitions and pictures for these terms, "Seafaring and Pirate books for young people", or at least try one of the following books:
"A Sea of Words", or "Traditions of the Navy", Manual of Seamanship for Boys and Seamen of the Royal Navy", and "Sailing Ships at a Glance".

Don't get discouraged, it gets pretty good!
By A Customer
"The Dark Frigate" was the 1923 Newbery Award winner. However, as I read the first few chapters I was thinking to myself, "Boy, the Newbery standards weren't very high back then." My chief problem was that it was written in a very archaic and verbose style. I understand that the author was trying to recreate a feeling of 17th century language for his readers, but any child under the age of 12 is going to get frustrated and I doubt many children over age 12 will enjoy wading through its difficult prose either. Also, this is a strange childrens book in that the main character is not a child, but a 19 yr old man with an eye for comely barmaids.
However, if one can get through the rather awkward writing style and the cursory introductions to key characters, "The Dark Frigate" becomes a real page turner when the pirates enter the story and remains one until the last couple of chapters when the author tries to wrap everything up a little too quickly. The chapters dealing with the pirates, though, make for an extremely entertaining and exciting tale. It's those chapters that made me understand why this book won the Newbery.
Although, written for children, "The Dark Frigate" is a rather grown-up book with murders being described in grisly detail, implied torture, hangings, and female characters who aren't exactly chaste maidens. I guess children in the 20's weren't handled with kid gloves when it came to describing the seedier elements of life.

Review by Adam Phippen, Brookwood School Grade 7. Phil Marsham is the main character in the book The Dark Frigate by Charles Boardman Hawes, which I thought was very good. Phil Marsham was born in England and was English by right of birth. Phil grew up to be a strong willed young lad, who always had a love for the sea. He had a dream to sail the seas and get away from bland people of the county he lived in. Because he wanted to travel the seas he was very adventurous. He was a brave boy for when faced with scary situations he always approached it head on. For example when he had to get away from the farmers who were chasing him he hid in a place that they would not find him. This story took place in the late 1800's in England and around the cost line Phil sailed on. Since the area was under English law Phil had a hard time being a pirate. At this time there were many soldiers to guard ships against the threat that pirates proved to be. Many were very notorious so there were lots of dangers you had to get past if you were a pirate. There were many ugly ways of executing some one and all were feared by rouges. The idea of this book is that Phil is running from the man from the inn since even though it was an accident he still could not face the man, since he would surely die. So he had one choice. To run! This book starts out that Phil is going to London to charter onto a ship. When he stops at an inn Phil accidentally fires a man's gun off. This proved to be a big problem since he destroyed the inn's interior and nearly killed a man. So Phil started running for his life. This is what started the book. This book was great since it was very dramatic and had great descriptions. The drama comes in as it always comes in with the pirates and with their mutiny and their unsavory descriptions. Where there are rouges there are exciting climactic hangings. The well described dramatic battles put a certain edge to the story. What pirate story can go without a well described sea ship battles? This book is a little hard to follow because it is in third person view with conversations. It also uses lots of odd words and phrases and an accent. Some accents make it hard to understand the people in their conversations. You will get baffled some times when you run into a word like "thee", "thou" , "mizzy mast" or "twill". The phrases will sound a little funny too like "the sea pooped us out". For many drama lovers this is a great book. The battles put an action lover's heart at rest. This book has a part for anyone. It even has a couple romances too. It shows what friends will do for each other. It gets funny when drunks run into serious people. What do you get when you put pirates, soldiers and a whole lot of guns together? You get total mayhem. This is a great book for any one who thinks they can tackle it.
