Mami and Kyoko's back stories have always been the most interesting ones to me. I've read this series already and was very excited to know it was finally going to get an official english release. Can't wait to have all three and relive the heartbreak over and over again :')

Mami is one of my favorite characters in the series, and I'm so happy that she has her own story. The way they go into Kyoko's history is just fantastic.

Fantastic

As a big fan of the anime series, it was great to get this little story of Mami and Kyoko. This is the first part of three in English (the original Japanese run was completed in 2012). The next installments are slated for June and October respectively. The gaps between releases is a little irksome especially for a spin-off that only has 3 volumes. Still, any Madoka fan should get on this now.

I thought this was a good book. C.S. Forester is a wonderful author. I have read many books about Britain's sea power in the late 18th and early 19th century and found Hornblower to be almost a real human being with all the attendant foibles and strengths. Recommend this book highly.

Cecil Scott "C.S." Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (27 August 1899 - 2 April 1966), an English novelist who rose to fame with tales of naval warfare. His most notable works were the 12-book Horatio Hornblower series, depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic era, and "The African Queen" (1935; filmed in 1951 by John Huston). His novels "A Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colours" were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.

Beware, addiction lies within. . .

Don't read this book unless you have read the previous sixteen in the series. It's not that this book is bad on its own but simply that you will miss so much by not having grown with Aubrey and Maturin as they make their way through the shoals and lee shores of war and peace, marriage and separation, famine and feast. These books have been compared with the Hornblower series but this damns them with faint praise. They are, in every respect, far superior, truly works of great literature. The research and the depth of character development are staggering achievements on their own but these are no stuffy historical tracts; the pages are filled with sly humour. There are great acts of courage and infamy and sweeping tragedy. There is the story, which threads its way through all the books, of a lasting, deep friendship between two disparate personalities. The scenes of battle, winning and losing are among the best writing of this century. Think I exaggerate? Buy the first three books in the series and see for yourself.

After finishing this seventeenth installation in the Aubrey/Maturin series, I found myself wishing that there were still another seventeen novels to read. Patrick O'Brien's weaves a wonderful tale - one so vivid and magical that it is so very difficult to put any of the irresistible Aubrey/Maturin novels down. The seagoing tale that Patrick O'Brien has crafted is filled with interesting characters and a consistently compelling story-line. It is also replete with accurate historical detail and fully captures the political intrigue of the British Navy's involvement in the Napoleonic wars of the nineteenth-century.

Even though Commodore Aubrey's mission is to suppress the slave trade off the west coast of Africa and later onto a secret mission on the Irish coast to prevent a French invasion, `The Commodore' is not filled with seagoing adventure. In fact, the main components of the tale take place ashore. Maturin and Aubrey find themselves home after a long and successful adventure. While Lucky Jack is promoted to Commodore of the First Class, not all is well at home. Both he and his wife suspect the other of infidelity. Dianne has run away leaving Stephen's autistic child with the widow Clarissa Oakes. Political intrigue forces Stephen to slip some of his fortune and his child to Spain.

At sea, Stephen battles his addition to coca leaves and a severe bout with Yellow Fever. Commodore Aubrey's leadership and seamanship are tested by two Captains under his command. One is more interested in polished brass and drives his crew hard with the whip. The other is a sodomite, whose favoritism to those young men among his crew that he beds disrupts discipline and the fighting efficacy of his vessel.

This is one of the more magnificent books in the series and I heartily recommend it, as I do with the rest of the books in the Aubrey/Maturin series.

Commodore Aubrey takes on the slave trade

After returning from years at sea, in the East Indies, Botany Bay, the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands, the Peruvian coast and Cape Horn--during which Aubrey freed an old servant of Dr. Maturin from imprisonment and unwittingly took on a stowaway from Botany Bay, frustrated an attempt by a prototypical communist to set up an "ideal" government which would have been inimical to British interests in the Sandwich Islands, and a failed attempt by Dr. Maturin (a British intelligence agent) to free Peru from the Spanish influence--as well as encountering terminal storms, volcanic eruptions, encounters with icebergs, pirates and other enemy ships, in the last book (The Wine Dark Sea); our heroes, Dr, Stephen Maturin and Captain Jack Aubrey finally arrive back in England in this, the 17th book of the 20 book Aubrey/Maturin series.

However, all is not well. Aubrey's wife, Sophie, suspects him of having an affair with the stowaway, Mrs. Oakes, although he is innocent. He, in turn, suspects her of having an affair with the local parson, who pursued her before their marriage. Stephen finds his wife, Diana, gone to parts unknown, and his girl child whom he has never seen, is suspected of being an idiot.

Jack is given a new command, promoted to Commodore, and embarks on an effort to stop the slave trade out of Africa, as well as to frustrate a French squadron from interfering in Ireland.

No one knows square-rigged ships as well as the late Patrick O'Brian, the author. His 19th century sea battles are often taken directly from British Admiralty records, but more than that his dialogues are replete with period expressions and turns of phrase that add greatly to his stories. What magnificent stories!

The newcomer to the series should start with the first book, Master and Commander, and take them in order. I envy you the hours of pleasure that await you.

Great start to the last question arc!

If anyone doesn't know, this is the last question arc. We will be receiving answers soon. Anyway, this volume was a nice change of pace in that Ange was the main character not Battler. The art by Soichiro was wonderful. I will admit though, I didn't take to it at first but it grew on me. I even like it better than Kei Natsumi. This volume switches between past and future constantly which may confuse some readers but if you have enjoyed the rest of the series, you will enjoy this one. This is NOT the place to start though! Overall, five stars and I cannot wait for the next volume! One complaint though: I found the color inserts to be quite lacking compared to the past volumes. This wasn't major though and I hope to see better ones in the future. See you again, hasta la vista ;)

The last question arc, but the beginning of everything....

For those who don't know, the author, Ryukishi07 (bless your beautiful mind), made 4 question and answer arcs that make Umineko. So this Episode (arc) will focus on the existence of magic. The story starts off with Battler's sister, Ange Ushiromiya, who sets out on her journey to find the truth of what happened on the island. This volume and arc really do a good job in establishing the point of Umineko: What is the "truth"? And it shows that there is more than one truth as every truth is subjective. Really its an amazing ideal as we delve into it in the future!
There's not much for me to say because this volume consists of Ange's life and her journey for the truth during 1998. But it's not to say it's bad because it's simply setting the stage for this Episode's and the story's biggest mysteries! :D

Oh how I hate cliff hangers!

Another wonderful installment of the series. Again, beautiful artwork, a wonderful story, etc. There's lots of fun twists and turns to this story. It does get a little confusing at times though, keeps going from 1986 to 1998. It's definitely interesting that Beatrice has allowed an extra person to help Battler, but, this new character isn't allowed to say who she is... someone Battler hadn't seen since she was 6 years old, now she's 18! So much fun! I'm very eager for the next volume to come out. I'm absolutely loving the story and I can't wait til the next arc, when we start getting answers!

Originally published eight years after Going Home, Lost Highway tills the same rich soil--the likes of Sun Records chief Sam Phillips, bluesman Howlin' Wolf, and dispirited countrypolitan star Charlie Rich resurface. But here Guralnick also explores the psyches and works of kindred spirits both celebrated (Elvis Presley and Merle Haggard) and obscure (rockabilly journeyman Sleepy LaBeef and the "world's oldest teenager," Rufus Thomas). Guralnick reveals a unifying hook: for each musician, touring has become "journey, arrival, process, definition, virtually replacing in almost every instance the very impetus that set them out on the road in the first place." I bought the book because Hank Williams is on the cover. However, it does not contain any articles about Hank Williams! It's a good book if you don't know much about country or rock and roll, but for the experienced reader, it's nothing new.

This aint no MTV

In Lost Highway, Peter Guralnick shows us some of the most unique, and largely unrecognized, figures in American music. His chapters on Charlie Feathers, who was there with Elvis, Carl, and Johnny in Sun Studios in the 50's, and Sleepy LaBeef, whose relentless touring machine, upon request, would serve up any hit ever recorded by anybody, are compassionate portraits of real people that never got the hits, the recognition, or the payday of their famous contemporaries. What you come away with after reading this book is a realization that Guralnick's subjects live and breathe 'the life'. It's what they do. As I read this book, I found myself wondering if Guralnick had selected his subjects to cover some broad spectrum of the American musical landscape, or if he just wanted to get face to face with his musical heroes, and writing a book about them was a cool way to make that happen. Whatever the reason, Guralnick's enthusiasm for American music and his abiding respect for its practitioners come through every page. His attention to the small things, whether flattering to his subjects or not, brings us in close, where frustrations, hopes, missed opportunities, and dreams are all there for us to see. This isn't MTV. It's not the Grammy's. It's blue collar, working stiff people, making their living playing the music they love. And because they are so much like us, their stories are wonderfully compelling.

An achingly beautiful book about life as a musician.

Peter Guralnick makes you realize how much it takes to be a musician. His portraits of the lives of country, blues, and rock musicians are so beautiful and yet so tragic. You finish the chapter on Bobby Bland filled with admiration for his conviction, yet saddened that what defines him as a human being can become such a grind. And you finish the chapters on artists you didn't know or care about--Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, Charlie Rich--filled with admiration, realizing that they loved and commited themselves to something that was as dear to them as it was to their fans, even when, as with Charlie Rich, it fell beneath their expectations. An almost indescribably beautiful book.

About the Author
Joe Drape is an award-winning sportswriter for the New York Times. I felt like I was there every step of the way

Joe Drape - you are a master. This book was all I expected and more. I felt like I was there every step of the way. I was a casual horse fan - watching and betting on the Triple Crown races only. The year of American Pharoah, I started studying up on the horses after the new year, wanting to have the best pick come that first Saturday in May. I came across American Pharoah. I watched the Arkansas Derby. That was it. That was all she wrote. I told friends that this was the Kentucky Derby pick, and I was quite positive on that statement. I wasn't wrong. Mr. Drape, I relived every moment of American Pharoah's journey through your magnificent book. I took my time reading it because I didn't want it to end. I finished reading last night, and I cried. It was like watching the champ run all the races all over again. It's been said everyone has that horse that hooks them into loving the sport of horse racing. American Pharoah was mine. He will forever be my favorite, but I now follow all the races. Thank you Mr Drape, for this beautifully written story of one of the most spectacular horses in American history. Anyone who didn't have their head in the sand in 2015 should read this book. It's perfect.

A great account sof the Champ's march to the Triple Crown.

I had followed American Pharoah since his 2 year old year, so I know the whole story, so I wasn't sure how much I would like the book. I LOVED it! Great account of the Champ's march to the Triple Crown. Great insights from Bafferts and the other folks behind the scenes. Really enjoyable. I recommend it not just for those who love horses, but for anyone who appreciates a great sports story. A great job by Joe Drape.

Feinstein focuses on the defensive captains from each 1995 squad, young men whose football careers end with the final gun of the big game. In a year when the service academies are enjoying their biggest gridiron success in many seasons, Feinstein's ruminations on the game seem particularly timely.

Although neither Army nor Navy is a college football power anymore, their annual rivalry still attracts national attention, and the game between the two service academies is the most important contest for both schools every season. In chronicling the 1995 game (the 96th meeting between the two teams), Feinstein (A Good Walk Spoiled) provides readers with a comprehensive backdrop to the game by recounting the events leading up to Army vs. Navy. Feinstein has a formula: He gets on the inside of a sport and reports what happens over a period of time. He has done it for golf (A Good Walk Spoiled, LJ 2/15/95), tennis, basketball, baseball, and now college football. In this latest endeavor, he examines the rivalry surrounding the annual Army-Navy football game. Feinstein follows both institutions through the 1995 season and, as with all his books, he writes about much more than just the sport. In examining the military academies, Feinstein puts the reader there, describing daily routines for cadets and midshipmen. Part of what makes the book stand out is that the players involved are true scholar-athletes; they are not using their schools as a stepping-stone to the pros. Highly recommended for athletes and their parents, and for all public and high school libraries.

an excellent book about a subject in which I have no interes

This will be very short. I am a 49 year-old, female, English teacher with NO interest in sports! I began this book because there was nothing else to read. After the first few pages I was completely taken in. I could not put it down. Yes, it was about football, but it was more a study in determination, in the hopes of youth, in the foolishness of old men and in heartbreak. Friends and relatives were constantly surprised that I was not only reading this book, but enjoying it so much! Couch potatoes, get a work-out without leaving your chair! Read this book!

Duty... Honor... Country... Sport... IN THAT ORDER

If you are looking for a story of selfish, maladjusted, spoiled, law-bending athletes... this isn't it. No Lawrence Philips or Peter Warwicks here. No chest-thumping, trash-talking, pampered delinquents. No BCS hype, big-time budgets, or recruiting violations. Feinstein reveals dedicated young men -- many of whom are overachievers -- who accept sport in its broader context. While not perfect, we read the story of young men dedicated to an end that is greater than the sum of its parts. I will never watch Army, Navy (and, yes, Air Force) play again without honoring in my thoughts what these young men give day in and day out. Every high school and college athlete should read this book. Beyond football's "purest rivalry," Army-Navy is football (sport) like it ought to be.

Exceptional Read - Very Inspiring

As a former Division I-AA player who played against Army, I was always in awe of the effort the Cadets gave, leaving everything they had on the field. I could not put this book down. It explains the inner workings of the service academies, not just in a football context, and the incredible hardships players at these schools must endure just to get on the field. This book has inspired me to rethink many of my philosophies on hard work and perseverence, because compared to these guys, most of us have it easy.

The Ability To Freeze Time Carries A Heavy Burden Of Regret.

Levi and Mira keep Liese busy while Lilith, Yui, Erin, Akio and Arata protect Selina who now sleeps in a deep coma. Mira will use 'White Universe' while Levi unleashes her throwing knife to stop Liese in her tracks. Levi will lose the ability to move one of her arms, Causing her to do a high jump to get away from Liese who can't fully use the magic she robbed from Arata and Selina that backfires and now must escape to recharge her newly founded magic thats very dangerous to the rest of the 'Trinity Seven' and the world.

Mira and Akio will give Arata brutal training so that he will be stronger than Liese when she comes back for a second fight while fully regaining her deadly magic to crush the Headmaster and the Trinity Seven. Arata must find a way to get Akio's 'Mantra Enchant' magic that will be critical for Arata's survival against Liese. During training, Akio will cause the ground to break apart under Arata and then she sends him way up into the sky and when he gets up from crashing into Mira, He accidently squeezes Mira's right breast in pleasure and tells her it felt really good and Mira hits Arata between his eyes that will rain blood down on his face in shock, very funny.

Something very exciting happens to Arata's Grimoire which is directly connected to what happened back in volume 1. You will love the artwork of this new character that will help Arata in future battles.

I really liked the artwork of the Headmaster's Grimoire, 'Solomons Gate' which looks like a complete death nightmare of pain ready to unleash on the human race.

Even though Arata does get through to Liese, Her action for calling out 'Chrono Calculation' causes her to be forever trapped in the 'Ultra High Speed World' forever. Liese knows she threw away her only sister and her friendship with the other Trinity members with tears of remorse. I really liked the dailogue between Arata and Liese during the time freeze, Very timeless scene.

This volume was the best one yet and now Arata and Selina must find a way to bring Liese back from the 'Ultra High Speed World'.

These books do come factory sealed. My copy came damaged from amazon.

Ages 18 and higher can read this.

The fun continues

If you like strong female leads and a hilarious male lead that says what he's thinking and likes to playfully embarrass the girls, i highly recommend this manga.
