Saigon, by Anthony Grey

Joseph Sherman first visits Saigon, the capital of French colonial Cochin-China, in 1925 on a hunting expedition with his father, a US senator. He is lured back again and again as a traveler, a soldier, and then as a reporter by his fascination for the exotic land and for Lan, a mandarin’s daughter he cannot forget. Over five decades Joseph’s life becomes enmeshed with the political intrigues of two of Saigon’s most influential families, the French colonist Devrauxs, and the native Trans―and inevitably with Vietnam’s turbulent, war torn fate. He is there when the hatred of a million coolies rises against the French, and when the French Foreign Legion fights it’s bloody last stand at Dien Bien Phu.

A fantastic tale that mixes history and fiction
By M. Mcfarland
Grey's tale of love and betrayal in Indochina is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It's almost seven years since I read it for the first time, but I still remember being transfixed by the atmosphere in this epic tale.
Saigon begins in the French colonial days of the early 1900s and explores the often cruel relationship between imperial master and servant. There then begins the rebellion and the central love affair between the Vietnamese and Americans that moves in parallel throughout the book until the French are expelled and then when the last American chopper lifts off for freedom. Grey's descripton of the final moments and the fight to board is breathtaking.
What makes this a truly memorable read is Grey's ability to carry a complex theme with a such light touch. Never do you feel bored or weary. Five Stars.

Very well written and flowing novel
By Chuck Cameron. - Marine Mustang PA
As a Marine officer who served in Vietnam I was interested in learning more about Vietnam and how it got to where it is. I found this novel fascinating. I usually prefer other than a novel to learn from but this was an exception, written much in the James Michener style. It tells a tale beginning in 1925 and flows through with interesting character until the fall of Saigon in 1975. Very intertwined and provides a good picture of what did go on in Vietnam from French rule, through Japanese occupation (not well covered), French again and the American involvement. The only exception I had was from the 68 Tet offensive (I was there) and then on. It got a little less believable. However, overall I think it is a good read and I recommend it.

Five stars - no wait - four stars
By Sueman
I salute the author for the massive amount of research and time he spent crafting his 812 page opus.
In respect for all his hard work, 5 stars.

However, reading Saigon, I felt like I was drowning in quicksand. Too many details. Never ending plot. It was overwhelming, the blood, the plotting, the politics, the dead, the tragedy all around. I was at Cornell in the late 60s and I recall very clearly my classmates burning draft cards and Daniel Berrigan's anti-war movement. I recall also this country being so divided over the war and the body counts and the escalation and the lies. I was very eager to learn more of the background, but I had to stop reading it every 150 pages or so, I could not take it any more. I don't know if this is a tribute to the power of the book, or if the fault lies in this reader, but I read several other books in between reading chunks of Saigon.

I also was unable to suspend my disbelief that all this drama happened to ONE American family. If my family is any example, children do not automatically follow in their parents' footsteps, and after all the pain Vietnam caused to the Sherman family, I could not believe so many of them kept going back for more. A book about a 10 year long war cannot be "enjoyed", it can only be gotten through. It took me months (and I read ALL the time). I was so glad to finally finish.

Some people describe a book as un-putdownable. This book I had to put down many times. So because the author made it so hard for this reader to read his book, I conclude my review with 4 stars.
