So fun!
By Anna's herding cats
The tagline for the Bookshots Flames line from James Patterson is *Novels you can devour in a few hours. And ...impossible to stop reading* and damn if that wasn't true.

A cowboy, a city girl, a sleepy little town and unstoppable attraction...Learning to Ride pulled me in and wouldn't let go.

The quick of it is that Madeline's come to a small town in Texas to manage a merger for her company. She plans on sticking around for a year, not getting attached, then heading back to the big city and career advancement. Little did she know a one night stand with what turned out to be a local heartthrob--and former rodeo star-- would muck that all up and leave her heart in a tangle.

I really liked these two. They're opposite as can be when it comes to pretty much everything other than having a little lust fest over each other but they so worked. Tanner is one of those soul-deep good guys that you can't help but fall for. And Madeline. Well, she's a little prickly and a total fish out of water but I enjoyed her and seeing her getting to know the town--the people, the nosiness, the local book club, etc--and seeing them change her mind about what life in a small town was like. These two were fun, sexy, and entertaining as they felt each other out, butted heads a little and then fell into a sweet little relationship.

Knightley usually does sweet historical romances so it was interesting getting to see her take on a contemporary with a little heat. Details were kept somewhat light but it was nicely done and she felt like a natural stepping into the contemporary world.

All in all, Knightley delivered a fun romance that swept me away and had me smiling...and losing a few hours sleep. Seriously. I couldn't stop reading. Love that!

WHO DOESN'T LOVE A COWBOY?
By gayle pace
Who doesn't love that cowboy? Madeline travels to a small Texan town. Her company is planning to merge and she is managing it. She has no intent on getting involved with anyone. She has a business to run. Then it happens. A one nighter with a cowboy, rather a rodeo star and of course, the town's local hunk. Will that one nighter become more? You have Tanner, the local hunk and Madeline. Does there tryst become love or is it just lust? Madeline came to this little town, not wanting to get to know the people, town or, especially Tanner. Small towns are different than big ones. There is always matchmaking going on and everybody knows everybody's business.Once you start reading, you start to feel the fire between Tanner and Madeline. Starts out as a little heat and grows. It's fun and interesting watching Madeline get into the swing of the little Texas town. A sweet romance with just a little fire.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, Erin Knightley and Night Owl Reviews in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

A good city mouse/country mouse romance.
By Tiffany (Read All the Romance)
Learning to Ride by Erin Knightley is one of the first titles published as part of James Patterson's new BookShots Flames imprint. I must admit, at first I had planned to avoid this line, as I don't read James Patterson and I thought the whole concept was kind of gimmicky. But after a string of DNFs, I was hoping to find a short but enjoyable read, so I picked up Learning to Ride. And I really liked it! It helps that it's a cowboy romance--one of my favorite tropes.

Madeline Harper is a bonafide city girl. She works for an aviation supply company, where she's their youngest acquisitions manager. Her New York office has temporarily transferred her to the small town of Sunnybell, Texas, to oversee a high-profile merger.

Tanner Callen is a former rodeo star who has moved back to Sunnybell to help take care of his grandparents. He's the most eligible bachelor in town, but so far no one has inspired him to settle down--until he meets Madeline.

When Tanner sees the obvious city girl in the local bar one night, he's drawn to her immediately. The attraction is mutual and instant. The two share a kiss on the dance floor, which quickly leads to a sexy one night stand--except things don't end there. As it turns out, Tanner discovers that Madeline isn't just passing through town--she's living in Sunnybell for the next year, minimum. He's surprised at first, then delighted to spend more time with her.

Madeline has mixed feelings when she finds out about Tanner's reputation of "Callen the Stallion" and isn't interested in being the subject of local gossip. But she can't deny her attraction to Tanner and wants to get to know him better.

I love a good city mouse/country mouse romance and the chemistry between Madeline and Tanner is convincing. They fall for each other fast, but I didn't feel like it was insta-love. The story just works. It's not all sunshine and flowers, either--there's some conflict when the reality of their divergent lives comes into play and they have to decide if they have a real future together. Tanner also has some heartache in his past that he's reluctant to share.

For a shorter novel, this one packs a punch. In many ways, the book reminded me of a Hallmark Channel movie with sexy times included. (And I love a good Hallmark Channel movie!) I would recommend this to anyone in the mood for a quick read that delivers an emotional story.

This was my first time reading anything by this author and I'll definitely be on the lookout for more of her books.

Ravishingly beautiful.
By David Marshall
I found a copy of this version of Snow White in the school library in Japan where I was teaching, and took it home to read to my boys. Later, I photographed the pages and showed slides to my Japanese students, using these illustrations to explain the surface, psychological, and spiritual meaning of the Grimm's stories. Of Grimm illustrators, I think Hyman is best, and while her illustrations of Rapunsel, Living Water, etc, are wonderful, this is her most inspired work.

First of all, the paintings take my breath away. Unlike the Disney figures, one can understand why the Mirror on the Wall thought these two ladies beautiful, and why the prince fell in love with Snow White! Hyman uses light brilliantly, beautifully, and with subtlety. Wow! My students liked them, too.

Also, Hyman seems to be one of those rare souls who picks up on the spiritual level of the Grimm tale. None of the other reviewers has mentioned the allegorical nature of Snow White, and I don't want to ruin the story for anyone. But if this interests you, pay close attention to numbers, temptations, candles, the mirror, especially the final mirror image, and the face of the King's Son. Hyman has drawn so subtly that it is possible to entirely overlook this quality and thoroughly enjoy her art, as an atheist may enjoy, say, the Chronicles of Narnia. Nor am I even sure she was a Christian. But she may have picked up on something intended by the Brothers Grimm. (For details, see Ronald Murphy's The Owl, the Raven, and the Dove: The Religious Meaning of the Grimm's Magic Fairy Tales. Or see my upcoming article in Books and Culture, "How the Brothers Grimm Overthrew the Evil Empire.")

Lay all that aside, though, and this is still one of the most lovely children's books I have ever read.

A nice twist to the fairy tale
By Teresa
This is the well-known story of a princess whose evil stepmother tries to have her killed. The huntsmen could not go through with it and tells Snow White to run away. When she does she finds herself in the company of seven small men. They live in a house very happily until the queen finds that Snow White is not dead. She finds Snow White and tricks her into eating a poisoned apple. Snow White dies. She is awoken from her death by the kiss of a prince and they live happily ever after.
The reason I enjoyed this version of Snow White more than others that I have read was that is was not as much of a fairy tail like story and more of a darker approach to it. The seven dwarfs, for example, are not shown as happy little creatures that sing and dance all day long. They are merely shown as small, kind men. The illustrations in this book are so beautiful even though they are not the bright colors that would usually go along with this story.

Snow White
By V. Charbonneau
Parents looking for a good edition of "Snow White" need look no further than this one by Paul Heins and Trina Schart Hyman. One day a beautiful, yet proud and arrogant, queen stands before her magic mirror and asks: "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is most beautiful in the land?" Instead of replying as usual that she is the beautifulest, the mirror informs the queen that her stepdaughter, Snow White, has now surpassed her in beauty. Driven by envy and anger, the queen orders a hunter to take the girl into the woods to be killed. He decides to spare her life and presents the liver and lungs of a boar to the queen instead of Snow White's. Meanwhile Snow White takes shelter in the house of the seven dwarfs. The scene when the dwarfs return home is reminiscent of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" with the dwarfs asking "Who has taken some of my bread?", "Who has been using my little fork?", and discovering the girl asleep in one of the beds. They allow her to stay. When the queen discovers Snow White is still alive, she tries to get rid of her in a variety of ways: bodice laces that cut one's breath, a poisoned comb and finally a poisoned apple. The fairy tale obviously has a happy ending. There are two scenes in the tale that parents or children might find disturbing. One is when the queen cooks and eats the liver and lungs, thinking they are Snow White's. Second, at the end, when the wicked queen is made to dance in red hot shoes until she falls dead. Other than that the story is well told and the illustrations are magnificent---detailed with rich and vivid colors. I especially liked the one where the queen, disguised as a peddler, is tying Snow White's bodice laces. A wonderul story to add to your child's collection.

The collection of short stories is a GEM!
By (=^_^=) Broncos Fan
I cannot express how wonderful these short stories are, how descriptive the places and people are and how great the spoken dialogues. You cannot help but to be taken back into time, to another culture, the Negro culture of the past, and of course some stories heavy on the vernacular of the era. Some of these stories have been in college anthologies, some are new to any reader. The original title of this book is called The Best Short Stories by Negro Writers 1899-1967. That original title sets the tone of these wonderful writings.

Langston Hughes has written the intro and said: ...."these stories in this bok range geographically from South to North, East to West from America's Panama Canal Zone to our Chicago Loop.

Some memorable stories include

Richard Wright's "Almos a Man", where a 17-year old measures the success of a man by one who "owns a gun" and accidently kills the mule.

Santa Claus is a White Man by John Henrik Clarke is a sad story how a young boy's first experience to racism is from none other than Santa Claus on the street.

Come Home Early Chile by Owen Dodson is the story of a young man who comes back home to learn that a hated woman is on display at the funeral home. He lashes his disrespect and despise to the dead woman, right there in her coffin.

A Summer Tragedy by Arna Bontemps tells the story of an aging married couple who decide to make a pact. The old man heads the pact to prevent any health issues preventing him from taking care of his blind wife.

The Almost White Boy by Williard Motley is the story of a black young man who passes for white and becomes involved with a white woman.

You will find some stories by the popular writers, Alice Walker - To Hell With Dying; James Baldwin - This Morning, This Evening, So Soon; Ernest J. Gaines - A Long Day in November; Langston Hughes - Thank You, M'am; Zora Neal Hurston - The Gilded Six-Bits, etc. etc.

"The Best Short Stories by Black Writers" is a #1 classic!
By Jamaica Wall
This book is an excellent example of reality. In each short story, there is some kind of relivance of growing up in a nation filled with crime, love, kindenss, hardships, and friendships. The writers express themselves so wonderfully, vivid pictures of the events are played in my head. It keeps middle-school children very attentive, mainly because they can easily relate to the troubles of growing up today. Teens can feel a sense of comfort in this book because they know they are not alone. This book contains collections by some of the best authors in the world. It really makes the african-american culture shine to where all cultures will enjoy!

Review
Praise for the Imaginary Veterinary series:"The best books are those in which imaginary creatures leap off the page and into our world -- just one of the reasons why this book is a ton of fun. I can't wait for more adventures!"―Wendy Mass, New York Times bestselling author of The Candymakers

"An entertaining story that will pique readers' interest from the first dragon sighting....Santat's characteristically dynamic illustrations complement a story that will have readers eager for the next book in the Imaginary Veterinary series."―Publishers Weekly

"A solid, entertaining opener. Ben and Pearl are Everykids that readers will relate to, and the adults of Buttonville are often delightfully weird and clueless....More hijinks-filled adventure than mystery, this is sure to win an audience."―Kirkus Reviews

"Funny, touching, and sure to please, this title is full of charm. Kids will relate to Ben and his troubles, root for the amazing animals, and enjoy Santat's zany illustrations."―School Library Journal

A dangerous and exciting mission!
By Young Mensan BookParade
Order of the Unicorn is book four in an awesome fantasy series, called the Imaginary Veterinary. Two kids named Pearl and Ben are apprentices at Dr. Woo’s Worm Hospital (it’s actually a place that treats magical creatures from another world). Pearl and Ben travel to the Imaginary World to try to find a missing unicorn. They enter the Tangled Forest and start their quest. It is a dangerous and exciting mission.

I love the first two lines of the book because they are funny and interesting and make me want to read more. “The first thing many people do after getting out of bed is put on a pair of slippers. The first thing Pearl Petal did on that Friday morning was slip her feet into a pair of leprechaun shoes.”

Part of the book is set in our world, and part is in another world. It’s more interesting than if it were set just in one world. Pearl and Ben are doing normal things in Buttonville where they live but trying to keep the Imaginary World a secret. Mrs. Mulberry, the mother of Pearl’s arch enemy in Buttonville, is nosy and trying to figure out what’s going on at Dr. Woo’s Worm Hospital. This makes it hard for Pearl and Ben to keep the secret.

I like the dialogue and descriptions. The illustrations are wonderful and they go with the story. I think kids would love this book because it is exciting and fun.
My favorite part is when they meet the unicorn king and I love the ending. I wish I could go to the Imaginary World. That would be so cool!

Woo is cool. And Ben is pretty cool
By SUSAN C MORIARITY
My son loves this series! Normally, a book narrated by a girl named Pearl involving a (spolier alert) unicorn princess would be a fat "No Thanks" for my nine year-old son, but he makes an exception for books in this series because the main characters get to travel across dimensions to imaginary worlds and battle evil forces (and their own negativity and fear) to save animals. And "Dr. Woo is cool. And Ben is pretty cool." And there's a dragon who plays fetch! I especially recommend for any child who loves animals and/or fantasy. Great for reluctant readers, to read alone or with a parent. The story moves quickly, with plenty of action and very manageable chapters. The books also touch on issues many children face, such as financial hardship, divorce, jealousy, keeping secrets, breaking rules, etc. in a sensitive and gentle way. Highly recommended!

Another ( The Novel )
By OMGIt'sBooks
[[VIDEOID:ab979535b2acea57e5f4829ba8b85dbd]] If you are a fan of the Anime or Manga by the same name ( or just someone who loves scary/creepy books ) then you definitely have to pick this book up. This novel is where it all started, and you can finally own an english translated copy in PRINT thanks to the awesome Yen Press. I thought the translation was pretty good, everything made sense to me. I didn't feel like I was missing anything. That being said, this is by far the scariest/creepiest book I have read, and I probably won't find one scarier/creepier. I have read some scary books in the past, but didn't really feel anything with those. With this book, I definitely felt creeped out if not full on scared. I actually had to keep my bedside lamp on all night because for some reason I thought it was a good idea to read in the middle of the night before I went to bed. It might not be that way for you, though. I am kinda a lightweight when it comes to scary/creepy things. But whether you're a lightweight or not, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of this book!

Another Omnibus.
By OMGIt'sBooks
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. In no way does that influence this review.

First off, the artwork is absolutely beautiful. The colored pages at the start of each volume are amazing. I really enjoyed the story, it's very different than most manga I read. Page after page, I just couldn't put it down. It was so interesting, I just had to know what was going to happen. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat. You won't be disappointed with the ending. I thought I knew what was going to happen and I was completely wrong. I definitely recommend reading this manga and experience it for yourself.

A clear guide to B&W photography technique
By A Customer
This is an ideal text for a photographer who wishes to advance his/her understanding of black & white photography methods. Without excessive detail, the steps that go into the making of a print, and the reasons that justify these steps, are clearly discussed. As the author points out from the start (in the subtitle), this is a technical manual. Those who are looking for a book on the "creative" and "inspirational" aspects of photography should look elsewhere. However, a prerequisite to "creativity" is a solid technical background, and you probably cannot learn "creativity" from a book if you haven't got it to begin with. If you think the techniques of photography are "dull", do not try this book. But for a photographer who wishes to understand them, rather than merely follow them as a cookbook recipe, this is a superb intermediate textbook.

Useful book
By magellan
I read this book after Photography for Dummies, and it was just what I needed to get a more technical slant on some things. I am still basically a neophyte at photography, so there was a lot of new, useful, more in-depth info in this book for me. I thought the author's discussion of exposure issues was especially good, as getting a feel for all of the things that affect this, and how they interact with the developing process, is one of the things that separates the experienced photographer from the less skilled.
For example, the author discusses of how and why you should expose for the shadows, and develop for the highights, and why even a negative that is overexposed by two stops is still usable versus one that is underexposed. Since the negative reverses everything, it is impossible to recover from an underexposed negative for the shadows, since you can't get detail that isn't there, no matter how long you develop. However, film that is overexposed for the shadows can still be used because there are ways to deal with the highlights during developing.
Overall, I found the book full of useful info like this and can recommend it to photography buffs who want a more in-depth understanding of the processes.

a clear and easy to understand technical manual.
By A Customer
Lets read the last part of that title again, "Technical Manual". While some people might consider the creativity or spirituality of photographs "Technical" I don't think that's what this book is supposed to be about. This book covers in detail techiques for improving image quality and technical problem solving. And it does a great job at it. The author doesn't get condescending or lose the average intelligence photographer with writing, and provides a valuable tool for improving photographs.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-A delightful choreography of rhythm, rhyme, and repetition that begs to be read aloud in tandem by children and adults, or by any pairing of beginning readers. The gist of the book is that reading aloud and listening as others read aloud is an integral part of early literacy. "Here's a book/With something new-/You read to me!/I'll read to you!" instructs a passage in the introduction. Thirteen two-page humorous "stories" feature enduring childhood subjects like animals, play, likes and dislikes, friends, and family. All are liberally decorated with Emberley's witty, exuberant, pastel-colored cartoon illustrations. Brief verses appear on the left, right, or center of each page and are printed in three different colors to signal whose turn it is to read (or when it's time to read together). Simple yet varied vocabulary is used throughout. All of the selections conclude with a twist on the "you read to me/I'll read to you" refrain. The combination of short, rhythmic stories and cheerful art is a winning one, making this title a valuable addition to picture-book collections.

The short poems are designed to be read aloud by two voices, with occasional parts to share. Color-coded text in double columns makes it easy to distinguish the parts. Each poem revolves around a simple incident: in "The Dime," two children decide what to do with the coin one has found; in "I Like" young neighbors finish the phrase, "I like . . . " in different ways. The energy never flags, neither in Hoberman's trademark bouncy rhythms nor in Emberley's exuberant illustrations, which picture a wonderful array of children and animals tumbling across the pages. It's a worthy message, lightly but strongly delivered: "In the shade (Or in the sun) / Choose a book (That looks like fun.) / One that's old (Or one that's new.) / Make-believe (Or really true.) / I'll read one line (I'll read two.) / You'll read to me. / I'll read to you." My 6 year old loves this book
By Y. Leventhal
I bought this book based on the reviews from amazon. When I got it, I admit I was a bit disappointed. The rhymes, I thought, were not exactly very interesting and each little piece repeats "I read to you and you'll read to me."
Much to my surprise, my 6 year old, who is beginning to read, loves this book. She wants to read it every night. Sometimes she picks to read the purple lines (lines are color-coded so parents and kids can take regular turns). Then she switches to the red lines for a second read. The repetition at the end of each rhyme, which I disliked, gives her much delight because she can read those lines without hesitation. So this is a great book for kindergarteners who are just beginning to learn to read. I can imagine six months down the road my daughter would much prefer something more sophisticated. But now she loves this book.

A Joy to Read Together.....
By Roz Levine
As the Mary Ann Hoberman explains in her introduction: "Here's a book/With something new-/You read to me!/I'll read to you!/We'll read each page/To one another-/You'll read one side,/I the other..." This clever and unique picture book includes 12 very short stories, written like a dialogue, and based on simple, lighthearted, friendly themes, that are perfect for emerging, and early readers. Each part is color coded for sharing and fun. I read the purple lines, you read the red, and we read the blue lines together, and then maybe switch. Ms Hoberman's joyous, rhyming text is full of rhythm, energy, and repetition and complemented by Michael Emberley's charming and humorous illustrations. You Read To Me, I'll Read To You is a delightful introduction to the joys and wonders of both reading, and reading together. As the author reminds your young reader at the end: "...But there are other/Books to read./Hundreds/Thousands/All we need./Any time/In any weather/We can sit/Right down together./In the shade/Or in the sun/Choose a book/That looks like fun./One that's old/Or one that's new./Make-believe/Or really true./I'll read one line/I'll read two./You read to me./I'll read to you."

Not long ago I was attending a conference for reading teachers. The main topic of conversation was, as you might imagine, books. After the third person told me You Read to Me is "simply wonderful," and "a must-have," I decided I'd better check it out.
My colleagues were not exaggerating. You Read to Me, I'll Read to You is one of those rare "must-haves." The book, as the title implies, is created for two voices. Thoughtfully, the text is divided into three columns, each done in a different color print. One reader reads the left-hand passages. The second reader reads the right-hand passages. Both readers, of course, read the text in the middle.
The dozen stories in the book are original, fresh, and funny. (Hoberman refers to them as little plays for two voices.) Each is short, rhythmic, and rhyming. Topics include: mice, cats, dogs, bears, snakes, snowmen, friendship, hats, and more.
Emberley's illustrations, done in pen, watercolor, and dry pastel, perfectly compliment and enrich the text. The character's actions and facial expressions are priceless.
The book works exceedingly well in the classroom. Perfect for "buddy reading," it also provides teachers a perfect vehicle for working one-on-one with students. As we know, reading aloud helps to build fluency-which in turn helps with comprehension. You Read to Me, I'll Read to You is the perfect fluency-building book.
You Read to Me receives our highest recommendation.

Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley, by Peter Guralnick

Careless Love is the full, true, and mesmerizing story of Elvis Presley's last two decades, in the long-awaited second volume of Peter Guralnick's masterful two-part biography.

Last Train to Memphis, the first part of Guralnick's two-volume life of Elvis Presley, was acclaimed by the New York Times as "a triumph of biographical art." This concluding volume recounts the second half of Elvis' life in rich and previously unimagined detail, and confirms Guralnick's status as one of the great biographers of our time.

Beginning with Presley's army service in Germany in 1958 and ending with his death in Memphis in 1977, Careless Love chronicles the unravelling of the dream that once shone so brightly, homing in on the complex playing-out of Elvis' relationship with his Machiavellian manager, Colonel Tom Parker. It's a breathtaking revelatory drama that for the first time places the events of a too-often mistold tale in a fresh, believable, and understandable context.

Elvis' changes during these years form a tragic mystery that Careless Love unlocks for the first time. This is the quintessential American story, encompassing elements of race, class, wealth, sex, music, religion, and personal transformation. Written with grace, sensitivity, and passion, Careless Love is a unique contribution to our understanding of American popular culture and the nature of success, giving us true insight at last into one of the most misunderstood public figures of our times.

Amazon.com Review
Until Peter Guralnick came out with Last Train to Memphis in 1994, most biographies of Elvis Presley--especially those written by people with varying degrees of access to his "inner circle"--were filled with starstruck adulation, and those that weren't in awe of their subject invariably went out of their way to take potshots at the rock & roll pioneer (with Albert Goldman's 1981 Elvis reaching now-legendary levels of bile and condescension). Guralnick's exploration of Elvis's childhood and rise to fame was notable for its factual rigorousness and its intimate appreciation of Presley's musical agenda.

Picking up where the first volume left off, Guralnick sees Elvis through his tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Germany, where he first met--and was captivated by--a 14-year-old girl named Priscilla Beaulieu. We may think we know the story from this point: the return to America, the near-decade of B-movies, eventual marriage to Priscilla, a brief flash of glory with the '68 comeback, and the surrealism of "fat Elvis" decked out in bejeweled white jumpsuits, culminating in a bathroom death scene. And while that summary isn't exactly false, Guralnick's account shows how little perspective we've had on Elvis's life until now, how a gross caricature of the final years has come to stand for the life itself. He treats every aspect of Presley's life--including forays into spiritual mysticism and the growing dependency on prescription drugs--with dignity and critical distance. More importantly, Careless Love continues to show that Guralnick "gets" what Presley was trying to do as an artist: "I see him in the same way that I think he saw himself from the start," the introduction states, "as someone whose ambition it was to encompass every strand of the American musical tradition." From rock to blues to country to gospel, Guralnick discusses how, at his finest moments, Elvis was able to fulfill that dream. --Ron Hogan

From Publishers Weekly
Opening with the 25-year-old Presley's nervous return to the United States in March 1960, this second volume of Guralnick's definitive and scrupulous biography then circles back to describe the singer's military service in Germany, where he encountered two elements destined to define his post-Army life: prescription drugs and 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu. His manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was by now a major factor in Elvis's career, and Guralnick is the first to explain successfully how the Colonel, a one-time carnival huckster, maintained an enduring hold on a man whose genius was beyond his grasp. Presley believed that they were "an unbeatable team," and the Colonel's success in keeping Elvis's popularity alive during the Army stint seemed to prove it. The subsequent results of the Colonel's go-for-the-quick-buck mentality?crummy movies made on the cheap, mediocre soundtracks rather than studio albums?shook Elvis's faith in his manager, but he remained loyal through the inevitable artistic and commercial decline. Guralnick's meticulously documented narrative (which draws on interviews with virtually everyone significant) shows the insecure, fatally undisciplined Elvis to be his own worst enemy, closely seconded by the Colonel and the entourage of hangers-on who feared change and disparaged Presley's tentative efforts to grow, especially his spiritual apprenticeships to his hairstylist, Larry, and to Sri Daya Mata. When Elvis roused himself?for his 1968 television comeback, for the legendary Chips Moman-produced sessions of 1969, for the early Las Vegas shows?he was still the most charismatic performer in popular music, with a voice that easily encompassed his rock-and-roll roots and his desire to reach beyond them. But as the '70s wore on, Guralnick shows, he became imprisoned by laziness and passivity, numbing his contempt for himself and those around him with the drugs that finally killed him in 1977. As in volume one, Last Train to Memphis, Guralnick makes his points here through the selection and accretion of detail, arguing in an author's note that "retrospective moral judgments [have] no place in describing a life." While some readers may wish he had occasionally stepped back to tell us what it all means, the integrity of this approach is admirable. Many writers have made Presley the vehicle for their own ideas; Guralnick gives us a fallible human being destroyed by forces within as well as without. It's an epic American tragedy, captured here in all its complexity. Major ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal
This sequel to Guralnick's Last Train to Memphis (Little, Brown, 1994), completing his intensive biography of Elvis Presley, does not disappoint. Careless Love picks up the thread with Elvis's hitch in the army through his death in 1977, a period that becomes increasingly darker and more complex. The breadth of Guralnick's research is nothing short of amazing, and his lyrical narrative presents an empathetic portrait of a man struggling with drugs, sex, family, personal eccentricities, money, and the delicate web of relationships surrounding any famous figure. Elvis's manager Colonel Tom Parker, wife Priscilla, father Vernon, and a host of close associates are portrayed with candor and insight. Details about everything from recording sessions to private conversations make this work hard to resist for die-hard Elvis fans as well as casual admirers. Guralnick's honesty and skill make this tale all the more disturbing, peeling away the romantic image of a fine talent to reveal a deeply troubled man. For all performing arts/ entertainment collections.

A poingant, depressing, and insightful look at Elvis...
By ewomack
First and foremost, this is a depressing book. There is a warning in the author's note that the book is about a tragedy, and this is an understatement. Elvis Presely's "fall" was a hard and bitter one. This book outlines events starting in 1960 up to Presely's death in 1977. Things start out looking pretty good for Elvis as he leaves the army and begins his career almost anew, but as the 1970s emerge, things start to cloud over, and the book follows the downward spiraling vortex that Presley and his somewhat bizarre and almost constantly fluctuating entourage followed up to the end. Along the way, Guralnick allows readers to draw their own conclusions about Presley. Mostly the book outlines details of certain events - sometimes so detailed one wonders if Guralnick was there himself - interspersed with commentary from people who lived through these same events. It is not an uplifting read. One gets the impression that Presley's fame isolated him from pretty much the human race, made him untouchable (reprisals were feared by anyone is his immediate "gang", and it didn't help matters that most of them were on his payroll) and ultimately put him beyond the help of his own family and the people who he thought were his friends. Presely's fame turns horrendously destructive in the 1970s, and some of the stories and anecdotes may make the sensitive reader wince. Some of the stories are just downright strange: Presley's religious enlightenment from seeing an image in the clouds of the face of Stalin turn into the face of Jesus; Presley's determination to secure himself a position of Narcotics officer from President Nixon; the pranks Preseley and his retinue play on each other, on audiences, and on themselves; the fact that, as record sales declined, Presely's revenue actually increased. Other anecdotes have a more disturbing undertow: Presley's manipulation and abject objectification of the women in his life, and the fact that many of them kept coming back even after being brusquely brushed off; Presley's fascination with guns, and his sometime not so comforting habit of pointing them at people when angry; Presely's wild, erratic, and irresponsible spending; Presley's inability to take advice from his wife, girlfriends, business manager, and even his own father on dire personal matters (e.g., his finances, his marriage, his health). It is a tragedy to read about someone who both cared about people but also put himself above others in a way that put him beyond their help or aid.
The figure of "the Colonel" lurks behind the entire story. He has Presley's business needs in mind, and, due to his business acumen, makes Presley (and himself) multi-millionaires beyond imagination. It's amazing to read how the Colonel is able to make more and more money from Movie studios, even as movies starring Presley are on a sharp decline in revenue and popularity. The whole story is mind boggling. In the end, the Colonel thought he was taking care of Elvis in the best way he knew how, but insatiable greed and insular attention to the bottom line and almost nothing else probably hurt Presley more than it helped him in the long run. Guralnick does not say this anywhere in the book. Again, the reader must draw moral conclusions based on the evidence. Guralnick does not moralize apart from calling the story a tragedy, and this makes this biography doubly interesting, as different readers will likely draw different conclusions based on their own interpretations of the delineated events. Who is to blame in the end? Is it fair to blame one or a few people? Is it fair to blame Presley? These questions are not answered (as they shouldn't be) but much food for thought is presented. As usual in life, the answer is far more complicated than mere finger pointing can accommodate. Guralnick handles this subject with eloquence and a distance that pull the reader in and allow for reflection upon what happened. This is not the usual shoddy rock biography that typically clutters the "Music" section of bookstores. This is a story to sink one's cognitive teeth into and reflect upon. Warning: this book will make you think; it will make you moralize; it will make you angry and frustrated at what happened, and it will make you ask "Why?" Regardless if you are an Elvis Presley fan or not (I'm really not; I was very young when Presley passed on) this is a book worth reading. It is a thick book, but a quick read (keep your dictionary handy nonetheless). Once you're in fifty pages or so, you'll probably find yourself stuck on it.

Masterful and stunningly sad
By W. Bishop
I was not an Elvis fan before casually picking this up in an airport to have something to read on my flight. Now I can hardly pass a day (or sometimes hour) without thinking about him thanks to this incredible masterpiece of a biography. If the aim of a biography is to guide you to the subject on a personal level, tell you something about them that you never knew before, inspire you learn more about them then Guralnick has accomplished this and more. One of the most fascinating and enlightening aspects of the 2 volume work (Last Train To Memphis) comes in the form of Elvis' recording sessions. To understand him as a person, to truly give him the utter respect that is due him as the ultimate musician, you have to get into those recording sessions and sit alongside him, watch his reactions, listen to his comments, gauge his moods. Guralnick has managed to gain us entrance to these sessions and you are there. At the close of this book beware - even though you know the ending you keep hoping beyond hope that it turns out differently because you will love Presley. You will grieve for him, you will miss him and you will be furious at the utter waste of a genius. Above all, you will be grateful for his life, what he brought us while he was here and to Peter Guralnick for bringing him back to us, if just for the time it takes to finish the book. Thankyou Mr Guralnick.

Elvis: *This* Is What Happened
By Will Errickson
Elvis Presley is one of those singular cultural figures who naturally and without defiance broke America apart and re-invented it. He didn't come as prophet or destroyer, not as a statesman or reformer, but as a guileless, unpretentious young man blessed with a talent and charisma and drive that leaves us mere mortals agape. In a way, he is like several other men of the era--Kennedy, Brando, Dean, later the Beatles--who created the "youth culture" to which we are (unfortunately) more enslaved to now than ever....
Wait a minute--did I just refer to Elvis as other than merely mortal? Not so, and Peter Guralnick's astonishing Careless Love finally makes it possible for us to grasp Elvis as human. While other books about him could fill a thousand mausoleums, let them, because Guralnick's two-volume set (the first is Last Train to Memphis (1994)), will stand as the definitive biography of this great American.
But before you dive in, let me say that Careless Love, while beautifully and carefully written, and extra-carefully researched--Guralnick had access to unorganized files in Graceland unlike anyone prior to him--it is dense with factual trivia insterspersed with the dramatic events of Elvis' life (and the lives of those around him). This book is not for the casual reader; in its intimate details, vast narrative, and utter lack of superhero worship glitter, this book will probably appeal less to traditional Elvis fanatics than to those seriously interested in this man who became a 20th century phenomenon.
Again and again, Elvis is described as "humble, shy, respectful, hard-working." This seems true, right, but what is most effective in Guralnick's portrait is what's shown and not told--Elvis' misplaced affections, his desire to keep family and friends around him at all times (but then, you can't blame him). These people, from his father Vernon, to Priscilla, to old friends like Red West, had to put up with his mood swings, his anger, his jet-setting on a whim, the covert operations of smuggling girls in and out of his bedroom. Seemingly without concern for finances he gave away Cadillacs, motorcycles, TVs, homes, jewellry, to those around him, testing loyalty, wanting only their dedication to his perverse lifestyle.
Guralnick makes it clear that one of the young men in Elvis' employ became one of his most trusted friends--and one who was hounded out of the circle by Elvis' "good ol' boy" cronies. Larry Geller was a hairstylist when he met Elvis in April 1964. Immediately there was a rapport, for Geller filled a gap in Elvis' life--a hunger for spiritual, even intellectual pursuits. Geller listened while E poured his heart out about his mother--and if you know anything about Elvis, you know he loved his mother and when she died, well, he was never the same.
Elvis became quite the reader--one of the many revelations here. I won't comment on the types of religious books he read--well, suffice to say today they'd probably be shelved in the dreaded "New Age" section of bookstores, but who am I to say? Sometimes the critic in my head won't shut up--but it's obvious that E had found a bedrock for his life that he had not found in Col. Parker, in Priscilla, perhaps not even in his music. You really feel it when Guralnick describes how Elvis' friends (and let's not forget, they were his employees as well) start to openly mock Geller and his interests, and, by proxy, Elvis' interests as well, although they would never do so to his face. This part of Elvis they could never understand, a part that required a depth of feeling--and perhaps an ego--that these guys didn't have.
Some of my favorite parts of the book were when Elvis was in Vegas. Contrary to popular belief, Elvis turned in many great performances in Las Vegas. After spending years away from the stage, preoccupied with Priscilla, the baby, bad movies, etc., he was glad to concentrate on the music once again. He handpicked his backup band, and the performances highlighted his freewheeling, energetic, off-the-cuff personality that had been stifled. Guralnick excels in revealing how Elvis' confidence and enthusiasm returned at this point, and how he spent less and less time with Col. Parker. In these pages, Elvis comes across as simply wonderful.

The best thing about this work is that it is simply about Elvis' life--indeed, it ends a mere page after detailing the funeral (50,000+ outside Graceland); James Brown gets a moment alone with the body; and Col. Parker tells a grieving Vernon Presley that even now they must think of the future (ooh, that conniving huckster bastard!) There is very little moralizing, even when it could be so easy: such as when Elvis wanted to have contracts put out on Mike Stone, whom Priscilla had had an affair with, and on his close friends Red and Sonny, who wrote the 1977 tell-all Elvis: What Happened?
No, what Guralnick gives us here is the portrait of a great man, a man whose legacy today is encrusted with gold and lacquer, a man who should be rediscovered and remembered as he is here: without myth, without ceremony, but with every respect and honor due him.
