Not that readable
By T. Marjorie R. Nye
I wish I hadn't bought several of these. The pictures are screencaps from the show. Most of them are too dark and not all that clear. The stories could be better. The original Dino Trux by the author are better overall books.

Another fun adventure with the traveling merchant and wise wolf.
By Steven Archer
Great addition to the series! Not as long as the other volumes, but it matters very little for this story. It picks up right where volume 10 left off. The story has great pacing and the dialogue between the companions is exceptional as always. There truly wasn't a moment that I wasn't enamored by the dialogue between Holo and Lawrence. And which I'm happy to say the book was absolutely flooded with their banter to the point where I think that a permanent grin has made its home on my face. I'm going to have to re-read a few more times to be sure I didn't miss out on any clues or hidden meanings, because the author sure seems to like to do that kind of thing. Like the rest of the series, an absolute must read.

Big wind adventure.
By A Customer
There is a different feel to "McBroom and the Big Wind," as compared to "McBroom Tells the Truth." While the artwork in "McBroom and the Big Wind" is cartoon style, the artwork in the other is more sophisticated and expressive, giving the story an added visually expressive dimension. The story itself is about how McBroom is able to save Willjillhesterchesterpeterpollytimtommarylarryandlittleclarinda from the big wind. As Fleischman's stories go, he hints at the real story, but builds up to the climax with all of the outrageous lead up encounters. Then he ends by saying, "That's the bottom truth. Everyone on the prairie knows Josh McBroom would rather break his leg than tell a fib (p.40)." The art is fair while the text is stronger. With the run-on names and narrated style, the book makes a good read-aloud title. Middle school readers make a good audience for this book and Fleischman has included words like "rambunctious" (p.14), "tacking" (p. 16) and "ornery" (p.22) to keep the vocabulary challenging.

Enduring story
By trishaa
The McBroom books were popular when our son was growing up and although I don't think he ever read any of them by himself, he loved to be read to. McBroom and the Big Wind was one of his favorites. I don't know if this was because of the story or if it was his fascination with tornadoes, this big wind being very close to one.

McBroom had a very distinctive way of talking, quaint and countrified, always calling his children "my Lambs" but when he happened to call them by name, he said all of their names in one big long breath. He ran the names together: JillHesterChesterPeterPollyTimTomMaryLarryandlittleClarinda! Whew, what a tongue twisting mouthful.

Everything in the McBroom's life was an exaggeration. His nails weren't long enough to shingle the house so he planted them in his rich farm soil and in a few minutes they grew an inch! When the winds came the jack rabbits flew in a V using their ears for wings. The wind was so strong they tied a sheet to the hand plow and plowed the land. The children had been playing marbles in the dirt when the wind came, burying them, and the dirt was so rich, the marbles grew as big as basketballs!

The biggest wind sucked the children right out of the house through the chimney and holding hands, they blew away. McBroom had eaten so many of his wife's heavy biscuits that he didn't have the problem of being blown away so he hitched himself to the plow and took off after the children to bring them back.

And so the story goes. Imagination plays a big roll in this book and the illustrations have just enough action to stimulate a child's mind. Sid Fleischman did a wonderful job in creating a character who will live on for decades in the mind of the child turned adult.

Another Windy, wild yarn about the McBrooms' wonderful farm
By Muzzlehatch
I believe this is the second "McBroom" book, originally published in 1967, and it's illustrated by original artist Kurt Werth who did the first three books. Having just read McBROOM'S GHOST and noted the rather unattractive way in which the redheaded rural family is drawn in that one, I have to mention that Werth's art is more conventionally "pretty", if also more cartoony and less distinctive than that of Robert Frankenberg. Well, "perfect" illustrations aren't easy, and somehow for me at least the pictures never quite match Fleischman's charming text.

But that's a small quibble. Here we are regaled with the story of how McBroom gets a broken leg due to a bigger-than-usual wind - but of course, we have to wait until the end of the book to find out how, exactly, he broke it. How big is the wind? Powerful blustery, I'd say; it threatens to blow away all of McBroom's wonderful topsoil, until the marbles dropped by one of the kids (was is WillJILLHesterCHESTERPeterPOLLYTimTOMMaryLARRY or littleCLARINDA? I forget) grow up into giant stones that hold it down. So blustery that the only way to keep the door of the house from blowing open is to pile some of Mrs McBroom's lead-heavy muffins against it. So blustery that a sheet attached to a plow can turn the farm implement into a speedy sailing vehicle. You get the idea.

Loads of fun. I think I liked McBROOM'S GHOST more; maybe I just like winter storms more than spring ones? Recommended to all lovers of tall tales.

If the good guys can't save you, call a bad guy.
When viral video of an explosive terrorist attack on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge reveals that a Federal witness long thought dead is still alive, the organization he'd agreed to testify against will stop at nothing to put him in the ground.
FBI Special Agent Charlie Thompson is determined to protect him, but her hands are tied; the FBI's sole priority is catching the terrorists before they strike again. So Charlie calls the only person on the planet who can keep her witness safe: Michael Hendricks.
Once a covert operative for the US military, Hendricks makes his living hitting hitmen... or he did, until the very organization hunting Charlie's witness--the Council--caught wind and targeted the people he loves. Teaming up with a young but determined tech whiz, Cameron, on the condition she leave him alone after the case, Hendricks reluctantly takes the job.
Of course, finding a man desperate to stay hidden is challenging enough without deadly competition, let alone when the competition's shadowy corporate backer is tangled in the terrorist conspiracy playing out around them. And now Hendricks is determined to take the Council down, even if that means wading into the center of a terror plot whose perpetrators are not what they seem.

Review
"Holm succeeds in developing Michael Hendricks as a complexly conflicted protagonist, while keeping the level of action and intrigue running high. Smart, unpredictable, and well-constructed... a satisfying thriller on its own terms and likely a harbinger of pulse-quickening adventures still to come."―Portland Press Herald

"Explosive and timely . . . Holm expertly balances weighty issues of national security with more intimate personal losses, and makes it clear that the best stories happen in the gray area between good and evil."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"This follow-up to the acclaimed The Killing Kind is a real thrill ride. Jeff Abbott fans and adrenaline fiction junkies will appreciate how vividly the shadowy world of military contractors comes to life in Holm's skillful hands."―Library Journal (starred review)

"This story fairly leaps from the blocks. . . . The Killing Kind earned a stack of plaudits, but Red Right Hand is the rare second entry in a series that actually rivals its predecessor."―Kirkus Reviews

"The novel brims with nice turns on genre conventions. . . . Good story, good action, some startling turns of phrase."―Booklist

"Like most people in Crime Fiction Land, I've been hearing about the talented Chris Holm for some time--and now I understand why. Red Right Hand is a rare treat--a tightly constructed, crisply written, fast-as-hell thriller. Strap in tight because the chapters whip by in a blur. Such is the view from a roller coaster."―Gregg Hurwitz, New York Times bestselling author of Orphan X

It's A Ride If You Can Get On It
By Ken C.
There's a lot to like in Red Right Hand as author Chris Holm has a knack for creating likable characters. But it's how he connects them that leaves me perplexed. The origin of the story has a presumed dead guy stopping to take a video of a family right as a group of terrorists attack the Golden Gate Bridge. And as luck would have it, the presumed dead guy accidentally gets his mug onto the video. That bad fortune sets the story rolling, but how likely is any of that? Those coincidences continue in the story, giving the reader the choice of ignoring them and going along for the ride, or constantly feeling a little shortchanged on quality. Let's face it- the odds that a young college dropout would get a job at a bar just so she can get into the good guy's life are so enormously out of whack that the author should have a red right hand for life. Or at least blush a bit. I'm looking forward to Holm creating a new story with Charlie Thompson, Michael Hendricks, and maybe even Rosalind Cameron. But please don't ask us to accept so many unbelievable scenarios.

Action-packed thriller
By K.B.
4.5 stars

I won an ARC of Red Right Hand in a giveaway and here is my fair and honest review:

I normally don't read many action-packed thrillers but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself thoroughly enjoying this one. The book starts off with a terror attack in San Francisco and from there the action just doesn't let up.

Michael Hendricks, a hitman with a unique moral compass, makes it his mission to protect a formerly presumed dead federal witness. Despite the fact there are many characters to keep track of, the author does a good job of developing all of the main players.

This is the second book in the series. It is not completely necessary to read the first in the series because the reader is brought up to speed on prior events. However, since most people seem to enjoy The Killing Kind, you might as well start with that one first.

unwinding like a non-stop action movie
By steve aberle
Red Right Hand by Chris Holm breaks new ground in the action/thriller genre. And it is something to behold. Michael Hendricks is a hitman. But with a difference. His mission is to eliminate other contract killers who have run afoul of a governing body called “The Council.” In Red Right Hand Hendricks has been forced to turn on the council. He wants to destroy them and end the council’s reign of criminality.
This time, Hendricks is enlisted by the F.B.I. to protect a federal witness who is going to testify against the council. After video surfaces of a terrorist attack in San Francisco revealing the existence of the long thought dead witness, the council decides to take action. The story moves swiftly from location to location, unwinding like a non-stop action movie. Hendricks is assisted by a female tech guru who gives the story a nice added dimension.
Red Right Hand is a book that should be savored and thoroughly enjoyed. The author does what all great writers do – he makes you look forward to his next book. Buy this for the weekend upcoming.

Ship of the Line (Hornblower Saga), by C. S. Forester

May 1810, seventeen years deep into the Napoleonic Wars. Captain Horatio Hornblower is newly in command of his first ship of the line, the seventy-four-gun HMS Sutherland, which he deems "the ugliest and least desirable two-decker in the Navy List." Moreover, she is 250 men short of a full crew, so Hornblower must enlist and train "poachers, bigamists, sheepstealers," and other landlubbers. By the time the Sutherland reaches the blockaded Catalonian coast of Spain, the crew is capable of staging five astonishing solo raids against the French. But the grisly prospect of defeat and capture looms for both captain and crew as the Sutherland single-handedly takes on four French ships.

One of the best stories of war at sea ever written
By Marshall Lord
Cecil Scott Forester is best known as the creator of Horatio Hornblower, but before writing the "Hornblower" novels about Nelson's navy he wrote many other books, from "Death to the French" to "The Peacemaker."

This little gem, "The Ship" describes the action seen by the crew of a light cruiser in the course of an afternoon's fighting as they struggle against overwhelming odds to get a vital convoy through to Malta during World War II.

Each chapter starts with a few words from the captain's official report of the battle and then describes what this meant from the viewpoint of the human beings involved, from the captain himself down to the most junior seaman. The contrast between the dry, understated language of the official document and the suffering and heroism of the real events can be very powerful. And the amount of detail packed into the book about life on a 1940's warship is amazing.

When you read a tale of a heroic battle against impossible odds you tend to assume that the author has made up the story, but in this case you would be wrong. There was a historical battles when a squadron of of British light cruisers escorting a convoy to Malta was attacked by a much heavier force and fought back in much the same way and with the same result as in this book. (If you're interested, look up the story of the second battle of Sirte.)

Some readers may find "The Ship" a little jingoistic. On the other hand, the real men and women who stood up to the nazis and their allies sometimes had to display heroism as great as in this book. C.S. Forester thought they had something to be proud of, and so do I.

Forester wrote several novels/short story collections featuring World War II at sea: the others were "The Good Shepherd", about an American commanding the escort of an atlantic convoy, "The Man in the Yellow Raft" set on a US destroyer in the Pacific, and "Gold from Crete," most of the stories in which are set on a Royal Navy destroyer. All the others are good, but "The Ship" is brilliant.

In my opinion there are four classic novels of World War II at sea: "H.M.S. Ulysses" by Alastair MacLean, "The Cruel Sea" by Nicholas Montsarrat, "The Caine Mutiny" by Herman Wouk, and "The Ship" by C.S. Forester. I believe that "The Ship" is the best of the four.

A great story of naval warfare
By Nicholas Dujmovic
This is one of C.S. Forester's very best novels. I would rate it as a story as high as even the best of his Hornblower series; if one considers its literary qualities it is arguably his best book. The story of a single action in the Mediterranean fought by a single British light cruiser, it captures the intricacies of organization and teamwork that make a fighting ship. Above all, Forester makes clear, the business of naval warfare is that of flesh-and-blood men; from the lowliest seaman to the captain of the ship, all have a vital role to play--any one of them can be a hero.

One big character study ...
By RFT
This book is about the characters of "the ship." that includes the ship as a character itself. Sometimes Forester would overdue it and get wordy describing the thoughts and emotions of different characters and even repeat himself. On the whole he does a good job of interweaving the characters in the book into the battles fought. I liked it.

Review
Novel by John Fowles, published in 1969. A pastiche of a historical romance, it juxtaposes the ethos of the Victorian characters living in 1867 with the ironic commentary of the author writing in 1967. The plot centers on Charles Smithson, an amateur Victorian paleontologist. He is engaged to Ernestina Freeman, a conventional, wealthy woman, but he breaks off the engagement after a series of clandestine trysts with the beautiful, mysterious Sarah Woodruff, a social outcast known locally as the forsaken lover of a French lieutenant. The author, who continually intrudes on the narration, presents three different endings, encouraging his readers to reach their own conclusions. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

About the Author
John Fowles (1926-2005) was educated at Oxford and subsequently lectured in English at universities in Greece and the UK. The success of his first novel, The Collector, published in 1963, allowed him to devote all his time to writing. His books include the internationally acclaimed and bestselling novels The Magus, The French Lieutenant's Woman, and Daniel Martin. Fowles spent the last decades of his life on the southern coast of England in the small harbor town of Lyme Regis.

From AudioFile
In this contemporary, Victorian-style novel Charles Smithson, a nineteenth-century gentleman with glimmerings of twentieth-century perceptions, falls in love with enigmatic Sarah Woodruff, who has been jilted by a French lover. Paul Shelley's subtle presentation does full justice to Fowles' artful, mysterious tale, whether he's reading an exposition on Darwinian theory or narration of romantic assignations and broken promises. Never once does he lose the listener as the author moves between the past and present, commenting on Victorian customs, politics and morays. And never once does he give away the novel's surprise ending. Enthusiastically recommended. R.B.F. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A true masterpiece
By Matthew Krichman
In the first hundred pages of this book I had already begun to realize that this was one of the best books I have ever read. That feeling never let up; indeed, it grew even stronger as I approached the end, when I began to feel a frantic eagerness to discover what would become of these characters that I had grown to care so much for.
Sarah Woodruff (aka the French Lieutenant's Woman) is one of my favorite characters in literature. She is a complex, nuanced character, intriguingly covered by a delicate veil of mystery throughout the first half of the book. Her pain, her selfless sacrifice, and her courage are deeply and powerfully drawn. She is a true example of a woman ahead of her time, a woman who challenges the norms of her society by simply ignoring them. Her confidence and her quiet scorn for the Puritanism of the times in which she lives raise her to a level above the so-called moral leaders who condemn her. In a strange way, she is a true hero.
This book, written in the late 1960s but set one hundred years earlier, is a beautiful example of period literature. Fowles, through his remarkably genuine narrative voice, recreates the world of Victorian England in such a way that if it weren't for the occasional references to modern life you might think the book was a century older than it is. It is filled with all the pomp and formality you would expect, but also with a wit, dry humor, and quiet mocking of the period that lend it an added flavor.
But Fowles is not simply trying to create a period piece or social commentary. I believe that first and foremost he was creating a love story. I would put Charles and Sarah in the same category with Romeo and Juliet as far as love stories go. The relationship is developed slowly, so slow that it is exquisitely painful almost. And though the time they spend together is brief, it is filled with an unmistakable air of eventual tragedy.
The only question left in my mind is whether to categorize this book as a classic of modern fiction or of 19th century fiction. It could easily stand in either section of my bookshelf.

Living in the Moment
By Giuseppe C.
This novel is at once a retrospective and a prospective, a narrative that ultimately erases the temporal boundaries between the Victorian era and the modern reader's present moment. Fowles goes considerably beyond a novelist such as A. S. Byatt and even most historians in painting the portrait of an era and its citizens as well as evoking the multifarious "Victorian sensibility," with its ambivalence about social class, morality, progress, science, religion, and, of course, sex.
The affair between Charles Smithson, amateur gentleman paleontologist, and Sarah Woodruff, alluring, forbidden "outcast," is, in many respects, no more than a ruse (readers who express disappointment at the ending have no doubt swallowed too much of the bait, reading the novel as conventional romance). The epigraph to the final chapter, Matthew Arnold's "True Piety Is Acting What One Knows," can be taken as a key to the story's compelling theme and purpose. The narrative is a variation on the quest pattern, with the salvation of the story's everyman-protagonist at stake. Moreover, his progress from ignorance to self-knowledge, contrary to Marxist theory and, for that matter, inexorable Darwinian laws of natural selection, requires that he separate himself from his "age," the very culture that has formed him, defined him, and threatens to deform him.
The climax in the story is not Charles' meeting with Sarah in the home of the Rossetti's but his epiphany, in Chapter 48, while viewing a Crucifix in the sanctuary of a church. At this moment he sees his preoccupation with fossils as representative of his society's fixation on custom, externals, and respectability at the expense of the interior self and its own priorities. Charles and Sarah find their heart's bliss "through" but certainly not "with" each other.
I read this novel at the same time I was reading "The English Patient," Michael Ondaatje's poetic novel that challenges spatial boundaries much as Fowles' narrative does the same with temporal ones. Ondaatje takes fewer chances, constructing a fantastic, impressionistic narrative that makes very few mistakes and admittedly casts a lingering spell. Fowles', on the other hand, risks a lot, especially with his frequent, self-referential intrusions into the narrative--potentially alienating some readers, whether on grounds that he's violated the implict author-reader contract or that he's naively "postmodernist." Regardless, Fowles' novel is the richer, greater achievement, and ultimately the less contrived and pretentious as well.
"The French Lieutenant's Woman" is capable of satisfying at many levels. It offers a comprehensive history of the Victorian era, a Dickensian gallery of characters, an dramatization of the faith-doubt struggle found in the poetry of Tennyson and Arnold, a critique of Victorian and modern cultural malaise, a postmodernist literary conceit, an archetypal journey with an existentialist twist. Above all, the attentive reader of this allusive, multi-layered, yet remarkably focused story will be rewarded with a unique understanding of narrative and the reader's place within it. The narrator's offering the reader a choice between two endings has the effect of "liberating" the narrative and relating it to the examined life of the reader's own present.
It's difficult to see how a triumph such as this could be excluded from any short list of greatest novels written in English during the second half of the twentieth century.

Bold and beautiful writing from a 'Writer's Writer'
By T. Kaye
One of my all-time, Top 3 Books, along with 'Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' and 'Lord of Light.' The common thread of these is deep & subtle ideas rendered in taut, beautiful language. Caveat: not for casual readers seeking a-thrill-a-minute. Be prepared to stretch your mind.
