A Diet Ahead of Its Time!

In 1985 out of desperation I started the Diet Center Diet and lost 24 lbs. in 6 weeks. I followed it to a T--no alcohol, no milk, no yeast bread, 2 tsp. olive oil/day, no eating 2 hrs. before bedtime, 2 T. lemon juice in warm water every a.m., all fresh/frozen vegetables, salads with 5-7 different veggies, only sugars from allowed fruits and food, fish/chicken primarily, and 64+ oz. water/day. Even though no beef was allowed, my counselor allowed me 3 oz. beef/week. I ate each meal on time, slept better than ever, had energy to walk/exercise/yoga (although program does not overstress exercise--you will lose even without it). My blood sugar stabilized, I wasn't hungry, I had more energy, and I felt happier than ever before. When I reached goal, I could add wine with meals and additional foods. I listed some of the guidelines above to show that back in 1983, this diet was advocating ideas that have only recently been brought out by doctors. I can say without a doubt that this one diet will serve you for the rest of your life! I have used it whenever necessary--just cutting out the nonessentials and getting back to the core. No switching, experimenting, adding/subtracting, guessing, paying $$$ for the "latest" hot idea . . . doctors have not yet come out with anything much different from this basic diet. In fact, I'll be back on it again next week! I might also add, I'm now 80 yrs. of age and still substitute teaching and loving it!

Still works today with some revisions

In the eighties I went on this diet at leat 3 times. Each time the
weight was at leat 25 lbs in 6-8 weeks. The same principals applied
today still works. Love her diet still.

Oldie but Goodie

I very successfully completed the Diet Center program with a counselor, then relocated and was not able to continue. This book contains the entire program and helps keep me on track when I have to "go it alone"!

Brilliant psychological thriller!

Chief Inspector Bish Ortley’s daughter Bee was on a touring holiday with a busload of British students – the campsite between Calais and Boulogne-surMer was where they were with Spanish students as well as French when Bish had the phone call about a bombing at the site. The immediate heart-stuttering terror he felt took his breath away; his race across the Channel to the campsite with Bee’s grandmother felt like it would never be over.

As Bish was reluctantly drawn into the investigation, he discovered seventeen year old Violette LeBrac was also on the bus. But how could that be? From Australia, Violette was supposed to be touring Tasmania. And her connection to Bish’s past was impossible to miss – Violette’s mother Noor was in prison; Bish had helped put her there.

With the tragedy unfolding, the authorities, both French and British had no idea if it was a terrorist attack and who the target might have been – the evidence was sparse; the students unwilling to talk. But before much could be ascertained Violette disappeared. Digging deeply into the lives of all involved, including into the past of Violette’s family, Bish was determined to find the truth…

Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil by Aussie author Melina Marchetta is a gripping and intense psychological thriller which I had trouble putting down. It took me a few pages to settle in to the story but once there, I was captured by the plot. The author’s first in the adult psychological thriller genre (she writes Young Adult as a rule) she most definitely has a winner with Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil and I highly recommend it.

The popular Australian YA author seamlessly crosses into adult fiction with this latest offering

I knew little about this book going into it. I knew of Melina Marchetta's young adult fiction - although I haven't read Saving Francesca, On the Jellicoe Road or Looking for Alibrandi - I've certainly heard of them and seen the popular Australian movie based on the latter.

Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil is different to Marchetta’s past work. It's targeted at adults, for a start. But it's also more 'my' sort of book if that makes sense: a mystery to be solved; secrets to be uncovered. And it didn't disappoint on either count.

Although Bish is the central character in this novel, Marchetta's young adult-writing voice prowess is on show via Bish's daughter Bee. Their relationship is a complicated one and Bee lives with Bish's pregnant ex-wife and new husband. Mostly though he - and Bee - still struggle with the death of their son / brother; neither able to talk to the other about their loss.

Bish becomes embroiled in the investigation into the attack, co-opted by an old school chum (as they say in England. I think) who seems to work for the Home Secretary.

His investigation into the bomb attack on the bus also requires Bish to consider the incident which incarcerated Violette’s mother Noor a dozen or so years earlier.

Marchetta's characters are complex and felt very real. And they had their secrets. Some of which are important to Bish's investigation; some of which aren't.

Sometimes difficult, but well worth the effort.

As someone who also grew up in Jersey City within a block of the author at more or less the same time I found those scenes of the place, the people, his family particularly moving. Jersey City's Philip Roth? The mother-son relationship, weird I'm sure to some readers, rang true to me, beautifully done. I recommend the book, difficult at some points, but worth the effort.

This is my favorite book ever. Its greatness is not in its general tableau or takeaway. Its greatness is not in the realness of his emotion. (Never mind that the real emotion expressed in this book is that of an ageing man of, who's thoughts ricochet off each other inside his brain, like Uranium 235 under decay.... real emotion of a man writing his fake life story and feeling torn by the fake vicissitudes he didn't experience).
Mark expresses the unique futility of language, by tearing all levels of interpretation from it, leaving only syntax and a little inquisitive joy: therefore expressing that which only the specific futility of his specific language can express. Pages approx. 115-135 made me sick with joy. But I am mostly interested in Eli's roommate. It's greatness is in little sentences, here and there, that have been doctored up to be sharper than a prismatic obsidian blade.
While TSFN reads like a DJ ASSAULT track, GWTM rolls out smooth sweet and old like Abbey Road (see Sun King, The End).

One of those books that puts you at peace knowing that things this beautiful and lovingly wrought are being made today

I imagine being in the middle of writing an autobiography or memoir and then finding this book and just totally despairing. Kanye West or Lena Dunham - skilled navel gazers themselves - would get whiplash watching Leyner LEAP into his own navel here and plumb his depths in ways they haven't even imagined. One of those books that puts you at peace knowing that things this beautiful and lovingly wrought are being made today. Read it, people!

Patrick Martins is a distributor of locally raised meat through his company Heritage Foods USA, which sends over 60,000 pounds of meat every week to New York's top restaurants. He is also a founder of Slow Food USA and a founder and on-air personality at Heritage Radio Network, which has over 1 million visitors a month. He lives in Brooklyn.

Not just for carnivores!

These essays are a great contemplation on how we interact with food. This is not some screed focused on a diet on solely consuming meat, but rather discusses how we do and should relate with our food. And the writing is very accessible. If you like to eat, I could not recommend more!

Good intro book to advocacy of heritage food traditions and heritage meat

This is a good book to introduce the reader to heritage eating over and beyond meat and the primary author is written by affiliates of Heritage Foods USA. The book describes the dangers of factory farmed food and the dangers of industrial farming and how that is eroding heritage food traditions that not only produce healthier food but often tastier as well. The only reason I gave one star is because sometimes the book seems to contradict itself or seemed too subjective in its proclamations. The takeaway information from the book that I got was to be more informed about where our food is coming from, pay attention to quality and unearth food traditions that have been eroded by industrial farming practices. I especially found the idea of eating endangered heritage meat to counteract the effects of CAFOs focus on one species of one type of animal interesting. Using these endangered animal species will increase their numbers by using them, which will counter the overuse of 'mutant' non-heritage animals pushed by CAFOs.
