Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley, by Peter Guralnick

From the moment that he first shook up the world in the mid 1950s, Elvis Presley has been one of the most vivid and enduring myths of American culture.

Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley is the first biography to go past that myth and present an Elvis beyond the legend. Based on hundreds of interviews and nearly a decade of research, it traces the evolution not just of the man but of the music and of the culture he left utterly transformed, creating a completely fresh portrait of Elvis and his world.

This volume tracks the first twenty-four years of Elvis' life, covering his childhood, the stunning first recordings at Sun Records ("That's All Right," "Mystery Train"), and the early RCA hits ("Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel"). These were the years of his improbable self-invention and unprecedented triumphs, when it seemed that everything that Elvis tried succeeded wildly. There was scarcely a cloud in sight through this period until, in 1958, he was drafted into the army and his mother died shortly thereafter. The book closes on that somber and poignant note.

Last Train to Memphis takes us deep inside Elvis' life, exploring his lifelong passion for music of every sort (from blues and gospel to Bing Crosby and Mario Lanza), his compelling affection for his family, and his intimate relationships with girlfriends, mentors, band members, professional associates, and friends. It shows us the loneliness, the trustfulness, the voracious appetite for experience, and above all the unshakable, almost mystical faith that Elvis had in himself and his music. Drawing frequently on Elvis' own words and on the recollections of those closest to him, the book offers an emotional, complex portrait of young Elvis Presley with a depth and dimension that for the first time allow his extraordinary accomplishments to ring true.

Peter Guralnick has given us a previously unseen world, a rich panoply of people and events that illuminate an achievement, a place, and a time as never revealed before. Written with grace, humor, and affection, Last Train to Memphis has been hailed as the definitive biography of Elvis Presley. It is the first to set aside the myths and focus on Elvis' humanity in a way that has yet to be duplicated.

Amazon.com Review
There's no mention of sequins, drugs, or peanut butter in this understated biography of the teenaged Elvis, a serious and worthy attempt to answer the question, "Who was this guy before he was an icon, the voice of a generation, the King?" The essential clarity and honesty of Guralnick's prose clearly limns the eager, malleable boy whose immense talent changed the course of American music.

From Publishers Weekly
Vol. one of Guralnick's exhaustive, two-volume biography details the King's first 24 years, leaving off when his rise is interrupted by his being drafted into the army.

From Library Journal
Another work on Presley? Since Guralnick is "one of the best, most respected popular music historians" in the business (Sweet Soul Blues Music, LJ 6/1/ 86), this could be good.

Elvis 101
By Amazon Customer
"Last Train to Memphis" and its sequel, "Careless Love", make a deeply engrossing, carefully researched, finely written biography of Elvis Presley.
Author Peter Guralnick took eleven years to exhaustively research sources and interview people who knew Elvis personally and would tell their firsthand experiences. Guralnick's scholarly approach automatically eschews any hint of the fan adoration that can taint celebrity biographies. Guralnick might even have erred on the dry side rather than the juicy or dishy side of the story. This is all to the good, because Elvis' life story, a fantastic, zany, epic arc through American pop culture, is one that needs no embellishment and is served well by a measure of journalistic restraint.
Guralnick made a wise choice with the two-book format, because in Elvis' life there was a distinct "Rise and Fall." "Last Train to Memphis" is the rise: "Careless Love" is the fall. In each volume, Guralnick reveals much not just about Elvis, but about the people who were his family and closest friends and how their actions and relationships to him and to each other shaped Elvis into the man he became.
Accounts of his school days, his early days as a musician, his early girlfriends, and his family life all flesh him out as a human being and penetrate the shell of celebrity to offer a three-dimesional glimpse of the individual and his own ideas and aspirations and insecurities. The first volume ends with the death of Elvis' mother, a loss that sent him into the first tailspin of many, from which he never seemed to recover.
After reading this volume, you will be hooked on the story and will want to immediately begin the second volume, which is much darker and sadder as the King's world starts to unwind, chronicling his spiraling drug habit and his battles both public and personal. The second volume is catalogued and reported as dispassionately as the first, so that the same unblinking honesty that gave "Last Train" such sparkle and joy reveals the true depth of Elvis' isolation without having to resort to hyperbole.
Guralnick said it himself; that the rise to fame and the person were larger than life, and so too was the decline larger than life. It's an ending that leaves you feeling sad that what began so brightly should end so awfully.
I read these books because I knew very little about Elvis and wanted to know his life story, and they are a deeply satisfying and very credible account of the King's life. I can't imagine that there is a better bio out there for anyone who wants to study Elvis 101.

Some People Actually Think He's Dead...
By A. Wolverton
But it's not true...Elvis DOES live...in the pages of Guralnick's outstanding biography of Elvis Presley, a biography that will stand the test of time as the definitive study of the King of Rock n Roll.
In Volume One, Guralnick takes us from Elvis' humble beginnings in Tupelo, Mississippi to his departure for Army duty in Germany twenty-three years later. In between, readers will be fascinated with what they THOUGHT they knew about Elvis. LAST TRAIN differs from other books about Elvis in two very distinct ways: First, the author gives us first hand accounts from the people who were actually there. There's no tabloid journalism or second-hand anecdotes. Guralnick has done his research and it shows. Second, Elvis is never presented as an icon or an idol. Guralnick has the unique ability to step back away from the action as an impartial observer and give us an extraordinarily clear image of what Elvis was really like - a really nice, clean, religious kid who was consumed with music and making people happy.
You can almost feel the electricity of the recording sessions at Sun Studios. You can watch Sam Phillips as he realizes that this boy could change the course of popular music forever. Elvis' girls, friends, musicians...they're all here and they all have a piece of the story to tell. And what about the "Colonel" Tom Parker? Genius or huckster?
Of course, the hysteria is recorded as well. After all, it's part of the story. Crazed fans were nothing new. After all, girls had been going nuts over singers like Frank Sinatra and many others for years. But the world had never seen anything like this? How can you explain it? Guralnick never really comes right out with an explanation, but you'll be able to pick it up between the lines. But you'll enjoy the book so much in the process, all you'll care about is what happens next.
The writing, the storytelling, the descriptions...it's all outstanding. But if I had to pick two moments that really struck me, one would be Elvis near his popularity peak looking out of a train window. He saw a lone dog running in a field and longed for the freedom to roam the world unhindered by masses of admirers. It's a very simple, but powerful image of things to come. The other is the [end of life] of Elvis' mother near the end of the first volume. In one of the most heartbreaking scenes I've ever read, Elvis kneels beside his deceased mother's body, crying out that he would give up all of his success and go back to digging ditches if he could only have her back again. If you have dry eyes at the end of this book, your heart needs to be jumpstarted.
Like all good writers, Guralnick expertly foreshadows the tragic events that will take place in Volume Two. Even if you think you know the full Elvis story, you'll learn plenty by reading this book. The only bad part about finishing Volume One is not having a copy of Volume Two nearby. Buy both. You won't be sorry.

great bio
By Orrin C. Judd
Peter Guralnick demonstrated in his definitive history of Soul music, Sweet Soul Music : Rhythm and Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom, that he has a nearly unique grasp of the singular way in which popular music and the political culture intersect in American society. Along with Robert Palmer (Deep Blues) and Greil Marcus (Mystery Train), he has helped to craft a still pretty slender body of literature which takes pop music and its impact seriously, but also places it within a larger societal context. Now, in his two part biography of Elvis Presley, he has set out to strip away both the mythology (Volume One) and the demonology (Volume Two) that obscure Elvis and to restore some reasonable sense of perspective on the man and his music. In so doing, he offers us a new and useful opportunity to understand the personal and societal forces that converged to make him into The King, one of the genuine cultural icons of the 20th Century, and to trigger the Rock & Roll Era.
There are several main factors that Guralnick cites, which appear to have had a particular influence on how events transpired. First is the city of Memphis itself, which served as a nearly perfect crucible for forging the blend of Gospel, Country, Blues and Rhythm & Blues that made up Elvis's sound. A southern city, but not Deep South, there was at least limited interaction between the white and black worlds. But most importantly for this story, the city was saturated with music. Second, Sam Phillips, owner of his own fledgling Sun Records operation, was on the scene looking for a white act that could bring the black sound to a mass audience:
Sam Phillips possessed an almost Whitmanesque belief not just in the nobility of the American dream but in the nobility of that dream as it filtered down to its most downtrodden citizen, the Negro. 'I saw--I don't remember when, but I saw as a child--I thought to myself: suppose that I would have been born black. Suppose that I would have been born a little bit more down on the economic ladder. I think I felt from the beginning the total inequity of man's inhumanity to his brother. And it didn't take its place with me of getting up in the pulpit and preaching. It took the aspect with me that someday I would act on my feelings, I would show them on an individual, one-to-one basis.'
Finally, there was the man, actually he was more of a boy at the beginning, Elvis Presley. And Elvis was himself the product of several forces. There was the impoverished kind of white trash milieu from which Elvis came and which gave him a sense of alienation and otherness. As Phillips said of him:
He tried not to show it, but he felt so inferior. He reminded me of a black man in that way; his insecurity was so markedly like that of a black person.
Then there was his mother, Gladys, who--in addition to raising him to be polite, respectful, humble, even deferential--also gave him unconditional love, bordering on worship, which he returned in kind. These forces combined, as so often seems to be the case, to make him insecure on the one hand, particularly in the manner in which he approached and dealt with people, but, on the other, left him burning with an inner certainty that he was special and was meant to accomplish great things.
All of these forces combined into a volatile mix in the Sun recording studios on July 5, 1954. Phillips had brought Elvis in to work with a couple of local musicians, Scotty Moore and Bill Black, because he wanted them to do some ballads and Elvis had done some demos there, which Philips was not overwhelmed by but he thought Elvis had some potential as a ballad singer. The session was pretty desultory, if not downright unsuccessful, until that inevitable, now mythical, moment when during a break Elvis started fooling around doing Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's old blues tune "That's All Right [Mama]". Phillips, initially shocked that this quiet white mama's boy even new the song, immediately recognized that this was just the type of thing that he had been looking for and got them to record it.
All of the tumblers had clicked into place. It was the nature of Memphis that Elvis and Sam had been exposed to, more like drenched in, the music of the black community. Sam happened to be looking for someone who could transport that music and, most importantly, the style and atmospherics of the music, into the white community. And in walks Elvis, that quintessential hybrid of insecurity and manifest destiny.
If success did not come overnight it did come quickly and Guralnick masterfully charts the meteoric rise that took them up the charts and took Elvis to television and then to Hollywood. This first volume also sees Colonel Parker take over from Sam, the purchase of Graceland, the eventual breakup of the original band, the death of Elvis's mother and his induction into the Army. Guralnick makes it all seem fresh and exciting, carrying the reader along on the tide of events. An incredible number of famous names stud the narrative and prove to have significant roles to play, including: Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Snow, B.B. King, Sammy Davis, Jr., Eddy Arnold, Bill Monroe, Steve Allen, Milton Berle and, of course, Ed Sullivan. This is a great biography, one that should especially appeal to folks whose only image of Elvis is the fat, sweaty, drug-addled lounge lizard of popular caricature.

Is it too much to ask for a little peace and quiet around here?
I mean, it's cool that my old pal Sasaki showed up out of the blue, but now Mori-san's blackmailing Tachibana, Fujiwara's being a general pain in the butt, and Kuyoh--who's a cat for some reason --is clinging to Kimidori-san. Amid the chaos, the SOS Brigade's final line of defense and the individual most responsible for my own sense of well being, Nagato, is downright...cheerful? Easily the most boring yet.
By Micah
Not saying it isn't funny, but the humor is kinda crummy and feels ridiculously forced. I only enjoyed one chapter in this book enough to even smirk. I laughed out loud one time.

Another great read BUT...
By Gabe Logan
Tomoko's antics on this volume live up to the rest of the manga already released.

Winter break sure did a number on her and her relationship with her mother and brother, but that's to be expected from Tomoko and the manga in general.

With that said, I'm a little disappointed with Yen Press with this release. The reason why I'm giving this a 4 star review is because of a few errors with the actual quality of the book.

There's a printing error on page 21, Tomoko's name isn't aligned with her uniform tag and overlaps with the cake (minor error, but noticeable).
Another error I've found with my copy was a blank page on the bonus chapter at the end of the book (the Omake). Right after the afterword with the authors, a two page chapter begins, however, only the second page is shown, which might confuse people who haven't already read the fan-made translations since there's no context to follow on what's going on.

Just a heads up to anyone who have yet to buy their copy of this volume.

Cringe comedy with a heroine unable to cope with real life
By Johanna Draper Carlson
Normally I hate comedy based on “look how pathetic this person is”, but somehow, I’m still rooting for Tomoko, even when she’s doing the stupidest things possible. I think it’s because there’s a fondness in her portrayal that allow me to focus on similarities without cringing from the discomfort.

As No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular! Book 4 opens, Tomoko has forgotten how to talk to other people, particularly boys. To improve her social skills, she decides to become a club hostess — which is like deciding, since you can’t get a basketball through the hoop, to join the WNBA. It’s the exaggeration that makes this so funny instead of painful. Of course, as soon as she seizes on this idea (based on a TV interview), she envisions herself as the best hostess ever.

I’m impressed by the non-verbal humor segments that work so well. As part of her self-imposed hostess training, Tomoko is working on lighting cigarettes and preparing drinks. She still thinks of life as a video game, working on speed instead of human interaction and trying to figure out tasks to complete to mark progress. In spite of how out of her league she is, she’s still keeping a positive outlook, as though she just needs to find the next new trick to make things all better. I think it’s that optimism and the resulting enthusiasm that makes her such an interesting read to me.

Also, it’s rare to me to see a teen character who’s shown as so honestly sex-crazy while having absolutely no idea what to do about it. She has bizarre fantasies, but I think that’s a realistic part of having adolescent hormones.

Much of this volume revolves around end-of-year activities, from a school marathon (where Tomoko is handicapped by badly having to go to the bathroom) to not knowing what to do with her winter break holiday — although Mom has ideas about cleaning — to a Christmas party with school friends. The last chapter ends on a high note, as Tomoko marks her sixteenth birthday by pretentiously engaging in what she thinks of as adult activities, which include drinking black coffee at a cafe and appreciating the depth and fascination of mature literature, without pictures. Again, she’s marking life by ultimately pointless details, but those elements give her hooks to start understanding the bigger picture. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

The further adventures of the Queen of Self-Sabotage
By Baron Hausenpheffer
The fourth volume of "No Matter How I Look At It..." comes in as strong as the previous three as we see Tomoko Kuroki's hare-brained popularity schemes freeze over yet again. This series seems to take Tomoko's life one season of the year at a time, and this is the winter of her discontent. I'm not going to give away any plot points, but let's just say she keeps leveraging her "strengths" in all the wrong places.

Besides the change of season, I also feel like each new volume of "Now Matter How I Look At It..." captures a sort of "theme" in Tomoko's life. The first volume was delusion, the second was isolation, the third was frustration(?), and this fourth volume seems especially good at pointing out how Tomoko is fundamentally kind of a rotten person (haha). Take her New Year's prayer, for example:

"Okay, shrine god, if you're at all competent, then please try making me happy... If you can't do that, please at least make everyone else relatively unhappy. If you can't even manage that, fine... but forget about my respect."

Her poor brother also reaps more than his usual share of her shenanigans, but at the same time, this volume is also good at showing how Tomoko is better and kinder than the sum of her social disorders and personality flaws. She wants to do right by the people she cares about, even if she keeps screwing things up. Maybe even better, this volume's stories also demonstrate that even this lowliest of losers does have a small circle who are each rooting for her in their own way. Tomoko's chances at popularity seem as slim as ever, but it gives you hope that she just might get out of high school in one piece... despite her best efforts to the contrary.

In terms of the quality of the story-telling, I remain super-impressed with the quality of this series as a whole. The reviews of the first couple of volumes do a great job of covering why this is such an alternately hilarious and heartbreaking tale of social anxiety, so I won't repeat that praise here - just endorse it. No matter how I look at it, this is easily my favorite new manga series, and highly recommended reading.

Following Where's Waldo? and Find Waldo Now , the search for Waldo continues. Here, in 12 large, amazingly busy panels Waldo, in hallmark hat and red-striped sweater, travels through a diverse series of land- and seascapes. The reader is set the tasks of finding Waldo and helping him locate 12 scrolls. Over volcanic terrain, Waldo traipses past scores of battling monks; he visits "the Castle of the Nasty Nasties" populated by vampires and witches; and he meets deep-sea divers (wearing striped Waldo-colored trunks), and mermaids and monsters of the deep. In the final and most challenging panel, Waldo is in a land of Waldos--hundreds of them, and readers must identify the real Waldo. Checklists at the end offer hundreds of other things to look for in the book's minutely detailed drawings. Patient readers are guaranteed hours of enjoyment from this adventure book. All ages.

The Best Waldo Book
By A Customer
"Where's Waldo" books are one of those gems that can be appreciated by both adults and children. When I was a child, I received this book and found it fun to search for Waldo, the Wizard, and the scroll (and even the various other items that are hidden in each picture). The most infamous part of the book is finding Waldo in a page full of Waldo clones (your only hint is that he's missing a shoe).
I would rate this book as challenging to the novice, but of medium difficulty to the more experienced searcher.
A genuine concern for a potential owner of this book is "Will this book be worthless after finding Waldo in each picture?" I would answer that as long as you do not write in this book, it will last forever. Your memory will forget the location of Waldo and the items after a few years and the book becomes challenging a second, third, or even twentieth time around!

Eileen was not the only agent in her family---her sister Jacqueline was a courier for the French resistance. Astonishingly, this resourceful young woman eventually escaped her captors and found her way to the advancing American army.

Praise for A Cool and Lonely Courage
By Odile Nearne
I just have to say how pleased I am with Susan's biography on my aunts' lives. It makes very enjoyable reading. Susan has written this book from the bottom of her heart, with real feeling for my aunts, who dedicated their lives unselfishly to the Libération. It is a touching tribute to their incredible courage. They were so patriotic that they didn't even think of the danger they were facing, and were prepared to risk their lives. They were an example for us all to lead honest and trustworthy lives.
My aunts didn't want any glory whilst alive and always kept such a low profile, so deserve to be honoured now for their sacrifice, through Susan's book.
Having actually spoken to Didi whilst alive, and done so much research, makes the book all the more interesting. You become totally absorbed by the story, that it is difficult to put down.
I thoroughly recommend this outstanding biography, and would like to thank Susan on my aunts' behalf.

Amazing Sisters Who We Owe a Debt of Gratitude
By C. Wong
It is quite possible that this story of two sisters who risked their lives repeatedly during WWII would have never been told. They were both British citizens but their family moved to France when they were children. Their mother had been French and they would not have succeeded if they had not been bilingual.

An old woman who used to be seen walking her dog named Bobby, kept to herself very much. She died in August 2010 in Devon, England. An ordinary funeral was planned for her. But in order to find out who to notify of her death, the police searched her home and found war medals from several different countries. The old woman, Eileen Nearne had worked undercover as a wireless operator sending and receiving messages for the French Resistance. Her older Jaqueline Nearne was the first sent to France as an undercover courier. Both of them were inspired by their older brother signing up.

I was really amazed by Jaqueline Nearne’s courage and intelligence. Eileen, aka Didi, was thought to be not smart enough and too naïve for uncover work. That proved to be completely false. She lost her naivety as the seriousness of the danger became real to her and but her intelligence was greatly underestimated. She was extremely brave and determined to survive. I don’t want to disclose any of the details because that would tell too much of the story.

The book flashes back to the girls’ childhood and also tells of the other family members but the exciting part is definitely when they both were serving in France, risking their lives and using every bit of intelligent to outwit the Nazis. This book made a big impression on me and has encouraged me to read more about the bravery and intelligence of women during wartime.

I received this book from the Publishers as a win from FirstReads but that in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings in my review.

A Non-Fiction Spy Thriller of World War II

A Cool and Lonely Courage: The Untold Story of Sister Spies in Occupied France by Susan Ottaway

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It is not so much the style of writing that earned five stars from me but rather the subjects of the story. Don't be deceived by that sentence into thinking the style of writing is boring, it is not. Rather it is understated as the lives of these two remarkable women were. Born in England, these sisters and their two brothers moved to France with their parents prior to the outbreak of World War II. Except for the oldest child, their brother, Frederick, the three younger children for all practical purposes were French. They spoke both French and English, their father being English and never having become fluent in French. Their memories of living in England were vague, yet when France was overrun by the Nazis and divided into Nazi held northern France and the Nazi sympathetic Vichy France, the girls began to think that their only way of helping defeat Germany and free France was to return to England and attempt to find work that would allow them that opportunity.

Both in their 20's, the younger girl, Didi, just 20, they managed after two aborted tries to reach London. Jacqueline, the older of the two obtained work with the SOE, a British government organization that smuggled British agents into France to work with the Resistance in preparing for the Allied assault to come. She was trained and sworn to secrecy as she was airlifted into France and dropped by parachute to begin a 16 month tour as a courier. Meanwhile, Didi, who did not know what the job entailed tried to get hired by the SOE as well and eventually successful was airlifted into France where she began her work as a wireless telegrapher. She eventually was discovered in Paris, by the Nazis and was arrested.

The story begins at Didi's death in an English coastal town, where she is known as an elderly recluse. She is discovered in her apartment several days after dying of an apparent heart attack. Nothing is known of her prior life and the town is about to give her a simple burial until the police, while going through her belongings, discover letters, official documents and war time medals that lead to her niece in Italy who is able to reveal the heroic exploits of her Aunt Didi and, also, her Aunt Jacqueline.

The revelations of the lives these women and others lived and the way they served the war effort is a mesmerizing tale, which stays with the reader long after the tale has been told. A wonderful book which reveals that in war time it is not only the uniformed armed man who serves, but in many cases secretive men and women providing the information and support the soldier needs to succeed.
