We liked the book Meet Tinker Bell

We liked the book Meet Tinker Bell, so I bought a few of the other fairy books to add to the collection. While the Tinker Bell book tells the story of a brave and intelligent little fairy, the other fairy books in the collection are just about putting on pretty dresses. Disappointing.

A Vineyard Delight

My friend and I first ate at the Black Dog Tavern several times in 1973. It had only been open for a couple of years. The food was very good and the restaurant was very unspoiled by huge crowds. If it had not been for Amizon, I probably would not have been aware that this, their first cookbook, was now available.
I have tried several of the recipes and my favorites are the Crunchy Pecan Chicken, Blueberry Banana Pancakes and several of the delicious deserts and chowders. However, I must say if you lived in a seaport area where fresh seafood was readily available, you certainly would have constant use for these wonderful from-the-sea dishes. I really enjoyed the beautiful photos and commentary which reminds me of my many enjoyable times on the Vineyard.
I have friends who recently dined at the Black Dog and they said they enjoyed the food but did not enjoy the long wait to be seated. However, they did come back with yet another T-shirt and a mug with the Black Dog. This cookbook is a personal delight.

Breakfast Heaven!

Well worth the price for the breakfast section alone! I've owned this book a week, and my family is working it's way through the breakfast section - we haven't even started on the rest of the book yet. Not only are these delicious, but really quick to put together.It's not at all necessary to save for the weekends, we've made two of the recipes for weekday-6 am-not awake enough for complicated recipes mornings. Try it, you'll like it.

A super summer selection

I love this cookbook! It's my favorite kind: easy to use, chock-full of information and a "good read", too! It's a visual feast: from the colorful designs, the fun drawings to the beautiful photographs of both food and island. But it's more than just a pretty book. It offers a great combination of contemporary recipes and traditional ones. I love this book...and I even vacation on the OTHER island!

Beautiful and fun book, but not as useful as "Making Faces"

Aucoin produces yet another beautiful and fun book about the art of make up. However, Face Forward is much like Making Faces without the practical techniques.
The book follows the same format as Making Faces without many improvements. The book begins with general articles about brows, lips, eyes, color, etc. However, these articles are truly general and only give written directions to achieve the looks in the photos. If you have the facial structures of the models, then these sections will be very useful to you! For the rest of us, I found the preliminary sections to be fun but not helpful.
The next section entitled "Face to Face" is useful with many before and after photos. The techniques are written and illustrated by photos of the make-over subject throughout the process. The looks are very natural and complimentary to the different ethnicities featured. I wish there were more makeovers in this section!
The final section entitled "Dimensions" features 48 different looks that are fun but not realistic for everyday use. In fact, most of the techniques demonstrated would only be useful for Halloween or a costume party. This section features many stars from Madonna to Tina Turner but offers little substantive content for everyday use.
Being a make-up-a-holic, I found Making Faces the better buy of the two. If you have to choose, choose Aucoin's first book for practical use. For fun, this book definitely takes the cake.

Exceptional, from both artistic and "how-to" perspectives

If you've ever looked at fashion magazines and wondered what makeup techniques went into creating the look, "Face Forward" may give you all the answers you need. Not only did Kevyn Aucoin do all the makeup in this book, but he also wrote it and contributed to the photography, art direction and design. He is a genius. Period.
Outside of the introductory chapters, the book is divided into five main parts: 1) "Behind Beauty," where Kevyn describes how he treats the face to bring out a wide range of attributes; 2) "Face to Face," which consists of in-depth photography and illustrations of the steps involved with creating beautiful looks; 3) "Dimensions," where Kevyn explores the "classic personifications of beauty" by making up actresses and models to look like stars of the past; and 4) & 5) forward-looking concepts of makeup techniques and the future of beauty, also using the faces of actresses (and even his mom).
I think it's great that someone as talented as Kevyn can be so generous in explaining his craft, but even if you're not into that, "Face Forward" holds up fantastically on its merits as an art/photography book: the resemblance of the current stars to the past ones is incredible (e.g., Winona Ryder as Elizabeth Taylor).
This book may be a little advanced for makeup artists who are just starting out, but hey, makeup is art, and art is about ideas, so it's definitely worth checking out. For anyone who is just plain interested in fashion and style, "Face Forward" will be intriguing, even if only for the skill exhibited in transforming one famous face into another. It's a masterpiece.

Good, but not an improvement from Making Faces.

Based on the same principles as Making Faces, Kevyn Aucoin created a reasonable sequel of his first book. However, making faces definitely had something in it that Face Forward is missing. If you liked Making Faces, I would recommend getting this book, too, but if you want to get one or the other, I would recommend Making Faces.

Magical, wonderful, smart, witty, capturing, and INCREDIBLE! BUY THIS BOOK AND READ!

I was just at his book tour yesterday in New Jersey and I am taking my time reading it, because last time with his third book, it was so brilliant that I finished it in two days. Chris Colfer never seizes to amaze me. I am in love with this series. It's funny, it's witty, it's magical, and it's adventurous. I may be 17, but I LOVE this book. I can guarantee that the ending might be traumatic, just like the ending of the third book and it might leave me pissed, but I know I will forever remember this book. Each book is beautifully written and every time I read one, I just eat Chris Colfer's books up, mostly because they are so compelling and you just get captured into the books. They're awesome and so cool. You literally feel as though you are INSIDE these stories with these amazing characters that he made a twist to the classics on. I feel like every time I read these books, I am inside a world filled with magic and wars and fairies and princesses and animals, and it just makes me feel like I am right at home and makes me feel safe. I love Chris Colfer. His intelligence always amazes me every time I see him in interviews on shows like GMA, and the way he describes these books, he makes you WANT to pick them up and read. If he turns these books into a movie series, I WILL DIE from happiness.

Amazing book!

Alex and Conner are the main characters in this book. Alex is a smart and powerful girl. Her twin’s name is Conner, Conner is a daring and adventurous teen. In this book they will travel to Oz, Neverland, Wonderland, Camelot, and sherwood forest. In each place they will meet the villain of the story. In which might try to kill them. This book was exciting and had you on the edge of your seat almost the whole time. The story had a awesome ending! I would definitely recommend you to read this series. It is based off of childhood fairy tales like sleeping beauty and cinderella.

Still fun but the magic is wearing off for me.

I've enjoyed this series, but this one felt too drawn out to me.
When I heard that Oz, Neverland and Wonderland were all going to be included, I was so excited to read this one...but unfortunately, those three worlds are very minor stops along the way with only a few chapters while the majority of the first half of the book was just not interesting to me.
I intend to get the next one, but it honestly looks the least appealing in the series since it seems to be getting even further away from it's fairy tale roots.

Keep reading and you will enjoy this.

If you enjoy the black ops action adventures, you will probably like this novel. The author did so many things well. He did have quite a few plot situations going on all at once which caused me to have some trouble keeping track of everyone and every incident leading up to the current exploits, but for the most part Matthew Quirk handled all the juggling well. What I do think went on a little too long was the tease of not giving enough explanation for readers to get their characters into the proper niche for the novel. I almost bailed from the book at the 20% mark because I was still completely in the dark about what was happening. This novel begins with actions on three fronts and each is populated with multiple characters, locations and intentions. Sorting just some of that out faster would have helped me really dig in and follow the various plot threads knowing they were going to join up at a particular point.

This is a novel about terrorism brought home to American soil and all the hidden manipulation of people, governments, and ideologies involved in having the plot reach point zero. I commend the author for keeping the major piece of information very well covered until the final few chapters. I had no idea and was taken completely by surprise. See how easily we can be led astray.

Excellent use of multiple perspectives

Great story, well told. Two things that are great about this novel, or rather the way it is written (see other reviews of the story, which is excellent as well) --

1. Masterful use of multiple POVs. Keeps things interesting. The narrator tracks different characters, building the tension/suspense as the reader sees the story develop from different perspectives. Chapter by chapter we get pieces of the big picture, while at the same time getting absorbed into the view as seen by whatever characters are featured in a particular section.

2. Simply great writing. I'm a fan of Lee Child's Reacher books, but Child's writing can feel like the reader is getting bludgeoned by a pulaski, nothing subtle about it. Quirk's writing is fast-reading and at the same time elegant and subtly witty.

An Outstanding Military Espionage Thriller

I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy military thrillers. The storyline was believable - albeit somewhat frightening - and the author did a superb job developing the characters in such a way that totally captured me as a reader. Unlike other espionage novels, the story wasn't overly weighed down with one violent act after another which I found refreshing. This was the first book I have read by Mr. Quirk, and he definitely has my attention. A great story and highly recommended.

One of the strongest and most touching volumes to date

The 10th volume is a magnificent return to what made the series brilliant. After the author's good but not great experiments with short stories and a 2 volume story, volume 10 returns to the one book format of a complicated plan and some not so subtle bickering between Lawrence and Holo. It is a tad bit longer than the rest of the novels, but the author crafted an excellent story.

Lawrence, Holo and Col find themselves in the middle of a battle between a king, the church and a giant trade alliance, and in the middle of it all is the sacred relic Holo has been searching for. The plan is as convoluted and complex as always, but I thoroughly enjoyed following the logic and the explanation was one of the more digestible ones in the series. The story actually does quite well tying in clues from previous novels and also subtly hinting at some current events as well. While Lawrence remains softhearted as always, Holo gets the focus of this novel with a number of scenes that open her up as a character.

For anyone following the series, rest assured this is one of the strongest volumes to date. Looking forward to the next ones!

Restoring the magic of the series!

Some of you may have noticed that in the previous few installations of Spice and Wolf, the chapters got a little dreary. The words got a little wordy, and the magical feeling may have felt to be diminishing. That is not apparent in Volume 10. This part of the Spice and Wolf story replenished your interest in the series and how the relationship of Kraft Lawrence and Holo of Yoitsu will turn out.

The tender feeling between the two is back, the hard thinking of an economic crisis is once again apparent. What seemed to be missing in the previous volumes is focus devoted to Kraft and Holo. This volume definitely brings that back tenfold!
