I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. I am really looking forward to volume two. I have watched the anime, I didn't care much for season one, but I really enjoyed season two.
This book has a fully realized setting, and it is very well described. The characters are also well described. Their really isn't any character development in the book, but that could happen in future volumes. The only thing that really develops was Touma and Index's relationship.
Something really cool about the story is the difference between magic and science. This volume sets up tension between magic and science for future volumes.
Most importantly this book entertained me. It was a quick read, I finished it in a couple of days. It is also an easy read. The writing flows smoothly, and in other translated novels that I have read their are times when their are passages that are awkwardly read, but I didn't come across any.
I recommend this to people who liked the anime, or are looking for a quick entertaining read.

Great Start

I've been waiting for this book for a long time coming. I thought it would never make it here, but managed to held off reading it through other means and when it finally arrived, I was ecstatic. I won't go into too much detail, but I'll give a brief overview + impressions.
It's very clear from the outset that the plot for this series is much bigger than just this volume. We only merely dabble into the world building and how great it is. We're introduced mostly to Academy City, but also to the magic side affairs with Touma's encounter with the sorcerers. But even then, with Academy City as the backdrop setting, we get even the most minute details about the city, how it runs, how it keeps itself so clean, how it's primarily a school city. And it's absolutely great reading about this with such a fully realized world as the previous review mentioned.
In regards to characters, it is also great. I much prefer the light novel to manga in terms of format. You get the characters full perspective on things with text. In this case, with Kamijou Touma, our protagonist, he's already quite likeable in the anime and one of my favorites, but you get an expanded look on his character even though there's not much character development for him (and there definitely will be later on.) You realize he's not just a simple shounen protagonist. He's very relatable and has his own sense of personal justice. So you get a full look on that. Also, a better look at the development between him and Index here as many will know of from the anime if you've seen it.
In regards to YenPress translations, I thought it read really well and no errors that stuck out and I'm glad they kept the japanese term for certain words.
I highly recommend picking up this book, for people new to A Certain Series or Index if you read Railgun. I also recommend picking it up if you plan to pick up the Manga counterpart of this in May. I can't wait for volume 2.

It'll be a good few years until they're done

It started with me watching the anime, both seasons, and waiting around for years for more. I've been well aware of the light novels the entire time, but the thought of reading them off some website that a fan put up instead of having a book to read was too off putting. When I heard that they were finally getting translated and brought over I jumped right on it. It'll be a good few years until they're done, but I can hardly wait.
